Is there any benefit or negative on releasing this over paid player?
I had a bit of extra money before opening day, so overpaid to sign a SP for $20 mil.
Of course he tears a UCL in spring training. Out for year. Since it was only a 1 year contract, would releasing him and paying the 20 mil do anything good or bad for me? Would it better keeling him on the DL for year (wasn't planning on resigning him either way.) Wears my insurance to pay for it lol. Anyway , just wondering. |

There is always the possibility that he makes a quicker than expected recovery and becomes available to pitch at some point during the season. Also, if he's a comp free agent, you'd be giving up the chance to make him a qualifying offer in the offseason in the hopes that he declines and you get an extra draft pick when someone else signs him.

Don't they have to perform during the year to earn comp pick status. Like I said this guy got hurt in spring training. And, it's a 10 month injury, don't think Hyun Ryu would be worth a pick either way.
But. I see your point. I was just curious. Guess it's easier just to keep him on IL. Quote:

How popular is he? If he is popular with the fans you will take a hit to fan interest.

just 60 day him and forget about him. You're going to be paying him regardless. If he is popular there is always a chance his popularity erodes over the season and that minimizes the negative impact you experience when he signs elsewhere next season.

I will also throw in my opinion to just keep him. honestly, there's no point of ever releasing a player unless you need the roster space or they are a detriment to clubhouse morale
