The original team would have been responsible for the contract if not selected in Rule 5, so more correct for them to get the salary.

Now, in real life, the team getting him back is allowed to refuse, but we don't currently have that capability. So... part of me doesn't feel it's fair to have the team he's returned to automatically be saddled with his contract, but not sure if it's fair either for the team that drafted him to always have to pay. Hmm, what should we do?
Any chance it could just option him to the DFA page but somehow cleared through waivers? Would allow the team receiving the player back to then demote without financial restraint.

I think IRL a team that has claimed a Rule V player can negotiate with the original club to, basically, waive the Rule V status of the player. The claiming team technically returns the Rule V draftee, who is then traded back to the claiming team for whatever compensation was agreed upon. That way, you can keep a player you'd like to develop but whom you can't afford to carry on the ML roster for a season without exposing them to waiver claims.

That's probably way too complicated to slot into OOTP, but it would be cool if it were possible.....

Also, isn't the 90-day-active rule fairly recent (like within the last decade)? Put in to stop the old fashioned way of keeping your Rule V, namely discovering an "injury" that required an extensive DL stay that just happened to end around September 1....
