Fictional History of Hockey

I have been running a fictional history of baseball league on the OOTP dynasty board and now with the release of FHM2 I have decided to add hockey to the universe as well. The hockey portion will work just like the baseball setup with entirely fictional players but the team names will be real.

I may also eventually include football in my universe using Greydog Software's Bowl Bound College Football(BBCF) and Barcode Games Pro Football Simulator (PFS). I am not a basketball fan at all so I am leaving that sport out of my universe.

This post will be to talk about the setup for my hockey league.

I will begin play in 1917-18, which was the inaugural season of the National Hockey League. I will take some great liberty with the league setup and number of teams in order to make it work within the FHM2 fictional league structure.

The top league, the National Hockey League, will contain 8 teams and those teams will remain active in the league with no contraction or expansion planned.

The 8 National Hockey League clubs will be:
Code:

NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE
Boston Bruins
Chicago	Blackhawks
Detroit Red Wings
Montreal Canadiens
Montreal Maroons
New York Americans
New York Rangers
Toronto Maple Leafs
Each of the 8 clubs will have a minor league affiliate in the American Hockey League. The AHL will be comprised of the following clubs
Code:

AMERICAN HOCKEY LEAGUE Parent club
Buffalo Bisons CHI
Pittsburgh Hornets MoM
Cleveland Barons TOR
Providence Reds NYR
Hershey Bears DET
Rochester Americans BOS
Springfield Indians NYA
Quebec Aces MON
Unlike the system of the day when each NHL team had an agreement with various junior clubs to sign and develop players my sim will follow the modern approach of have a junior league draft. The draft pool will be provided by players from the Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL). The CJHL will be comprised of 20 teams from across Canada and will compete for the Memorial Cup.

Code:
	   CANADIAN JUNIOR HOCKEY LEAGUE
	         EASTERN CONFERENCE
UPPER CANADA DIVISION LOWER CANADA DIVISION
St Catharines Teepees Montreal Jr Canadiens
Niagara Falls Flyers Ottawa 67s
Toronto Marlboros Quebec Remparts
Oshawa Generals Cornwall Royals
Peterborough Petes Sherbroke Castors
	         WESTERN CONFERENCE
ONTARIO DIVISION PRAIRIE DIVISION
Sault Ste Marie Greyhounds	Brandon Wheat Kings
London Knights Flin Flon Bombers
Windsor Spitfires Regina Pats
Sudbury Wolves Edmonton Oil Kings
Guelph Biltmore Madhatters	Medicine Hat Tigers

I will quick sim from 1917-18 up until October of 1940 to catch up to the baseball league at which point I will go into much greater detail about the hockey portion of my universe similar to the depth of coverage in my baseball dynasty. The next number of posts will be a recap of the league history during the time period from league creation in 1917 until the fall of 1940.

JUNE 1, 1917

PROFESSIONAL HOCKEY BEGINS (a fictional universe account)
After years of various semi-professional leagues challenging for the Stanley Cup each season it was decided that a single professional league should take control of the chalice. Despite protests from the Pacific Coast Hockey Association, which would not be represented in this new "National Hockey League" the decision was made to merge the National Hockey Association along with Eastern Canada Hockey Association and the Federal Amateur Hockey League.

Furthermore the newly formed league decided to introduce "six-man hockey" by removing the rover position. The new league would begin play with 8 franchises in the fall of 1917. Frank Calder, a sports editor from Montreal who helped created the Montreal School Rugby League, has been named President of the new loop.

Montreal and New York would be represented with two teams each while Toronto, Boston, Chicago and Detroit would round out the 8 clubs in the new league. Each team would also have an agreement to provide players to one of the 8 teams in the minor professional American Hockey League.

In addition, an at the time radical decision was made to have a player draft instead of a free for all in signing young talent. The executives behind the league recognized the best chance for all teams to prosper was to abandon the old system where players went to the highest bidder and instead conduct an amateur draft each year.

An agreement was reached with 20 junior age clubs to have them form a feeder league that would provide future talent to the NHA. The 20 teams would unite to form the Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL) and compete for a new trophy called the CJHL Cup (note the trophy would be renamed in 1919 to honour fallen soldiers from WWI and would become known as the Memorial Cup).

The league will begin with an inaugural draft and all players career stats will be set to zero as it is felt the old game with a rover is a much different sport from the modern game of hockey that will be played in the NHA.

The first round of the initial player draft was as follows:
1- Montreal Maroons - 26 year old center Tyler Bakala from Halifax, Nova Scotia.
2- Chicago Blackhawks - 29 year old RW Brandon DeWitt from Oshawa, Ontario
3- Boston Bruins - 26 year old LW Lucas Drevenak from Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan
4- New York Rangers - 27 year old D Johnny Navrati from Pelham, Massachusetts
5- New York Americans - 27 year old LW Josh Macaulay from London, Ontario
6- Toronto Maple Leafs- 27 year old D Damian John from New Westminster, BC
7- Detroit Red Wings - 26 year old D Brett McClement from Swan River, Manitoba
8- Montreal Canadiens - 28 year old C Nicolas Desmeules from Montreal, Quebec

I am building some history prior to becoming much more involved in the league starting in 1940 so here are the start of the quick yearly recaps from the inception of the league through to the end of the 39-40 campaign.

1917-18 - THE FIRST SEASON

The New York Rangers dominated the first season of the NHL thanks to a dynamic offense led by 28 year old center Barclay Wray and 29 year old left winger Nathan Ernst, who combined to finish 1-2 in league scoring. The Rangers scored a league best 265 goals, 40 more than the next highest team while allowing just 169 against. Only the Montreal Maroons, with 196 goals against, joined the Rangers in surrendering less than 200.

In the playoffs the Rangers had little trouble disposing of 4th place Toronto in 5 games while the Maroons won the battle of Montreal...also in 5 games. However, the Rangers met their match in the Stanley Cup Finals as the Maroons, led by playoff MVP Jim Zentko captured the Cup in 5 games.

AMERICAN HOCKEY LEAGUE
The Springfield Indians were crowned Calder Cup champions after they beat Providence in 5 games in the final. The Indians and Reds both finished the regular season tied atop the AHL with 89 points. Cleveland Barons forward Arne Madsen won the AHL scoring crown with 77 points.

CANADIAN JUNIOR HOCKEY LEAGUE
The Sherbroke Castors were the inaugural winner of the Memorial Cup after they ousted Brandon in 5 games in the finals. The Castors finshed tied with the St Catharines Teepees for the best regular season record in the East while the Soo Greyhounds had the best record in the west. The Greyhounds fell to the Wheat Kings in the second round.

19 year old Sherbroke center Carl Ericksson led the CJHL with 87 points, with Ottawa teammates Keegan Small and Joey Priestlay finishing second and third respectively.

-------------------------
1918-19

For the second year in a row the New York Rangers dominated the regular season and again finished with over 100 points. The defending Cup champion Montreal Maroons finished third for the second straight season.

The Stanley Cup finals would be a rematch of last season as the Maroons took care of second place Boston in 5 games in their semi-final while the Rangers needed the full seven games to dispose of their city rival Americans. Barclay Wray scored a pair of third period goals to lift the Rangers to the win in game seven.

Once again the Rangers would be no match for the Maroons as Montreal claimed it's second straight Cup, this time with a 4 game sweep in the finals. 19 year old Maroons defenseman Colin McLean, taken 6th overall from the Edmonton Oil Kings in the draft, would be named playoff MVP.

For the second year in a row Rangers rearguard Josh Tetley was named the winner of the Hart Trophy as regular season MVP. The 28 year old had 43 points and was an anchor on the Rangers blueline all season.

It was a second straight Calder Cup for the New York Americans farm club as the Springfield Indians finished first in the regular season and then beat second place Hershey in the playoff finals. Providence finished third with the Quebec Aces claiming the final playoff berth.

Hershey's 35 year old right winger Evan Johnson won the AHL scoring crown with 81 points

CANADIAN JUNIOR HOCKEY LEAGUE
The Ottawa 67s would win the Memorial Cup after defeating Regina in 6 games in the finals. Both clubs led their respective conferences in regular season points.

Peterborough's Patrik Sernka set junior league marks for goals (49) and points (105) as he became the first player to pass the century mark in points. The 20 year old was not drafted last year by the NHL teams. He was edged out for the MVP award by Ottawa's Keegan Small (34-63-97) who also claimed the playoff MVP award as well.

This is very interesting, I will follow this dynasty and the teams. Didn't think many people would remember the Guelph Biltmore Madhatters. My father played for them in the mid-1950's.

1919-20

For the first time the two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Montreal Maroons finished with the best regular season record but they barely held off Boston for top spot. The Maroons were led by the best offensive line in the league as 28 year old left winger Stevan North, 29 year old center Tyler Bakala and 23 year old right winger Serge Semyonov finished 1-2-3 in league scoring.

The Maroons would fall short of winning a third straight Cup as after barely escaping Toronto in a 7 game semi-final they fell in 6 games to the Chicago Blackhawks in the finals. It was a cinderella season for the Hawks, who had finished dead last each of the two previous seasons. The Blackhawks had plenty of young talent led by second year defensman Kelsey Stronach (10-20-30) and rookie Les Gerling (22-29-51), both first overall picks. The young Hawks had 13 regulars who were 21 years old or younger at the end of the season but the leader of the team was 32 year old Brandon Dewitt (37-20-57) who's 88 career NHL goals trail only the Maroons North (114) and Boston's Lucas Devenak (93)

AMERICAN HOCKEY LEAGUE
The Rochester Americans won their first Calder Cup after beating Hershey in the finals. The Amerks finished fourth in the regular season but beat first place Springfield in 6 games in the semi-finals before upending the second place Bears.

21 year old center Karl Shantarovich, an undrafted free agent signing by Boston after playing junior for the Montreal Jr Canadiens, won the scoring title with 70 points including a league high 33 goals. Shantarovich also was named playoff MVP after notching 14 points in 11 games for the Americans.

CANADIAN JUNIOR HOCKEY LEAGUE
The Montreal Jr Canadiens became the first CJHL club to surpass the 100 point plateau when they finished the regular season with a 50-11-7 record. The Jr Habs were led by 19 year old Nigel Bruno, who scored a record 55 goals and 129 points. Bruno, a left winger from Kitchener, Ontario was a fourth round pick of the NHL's Montreal Canadiens last June.

In the playoffs the Jr Canadiens reeled off 15 straight victories before finally dropping game four of the finals to Brandon. Montreal would eliminate the Wheat Kings and win their first Memorial Cup the following game with a convincing 7-1 victory in Game 5. Bruno would pick up 32 points in 17 playoff games to win the postseason MVP award but he lost the playoff scoring title to Brandon's Duncan Pappin, a 20 year old winger who scored 21 goals and added 19 assists in 24 games.

----------------------------
1920-21

Both the defending champion Chicago Blackhawks and reigning regular season winning Montreal Maroons failed to make the playoffs in a season that saw only Boston repeat as a playoff team. Parity was the name of the game as the gap from first to last in the 8 team loop was just 18 points - even Detroit was vastly improved this season but the Wings still could not escape a second straight season in the basement.

The big story offensively was Boston rookie pivot Keegan Small, who led the league in scoring after 3 seasons with the Ottawa 67s where he amassed 301 points.

In the postseason the Boston Bruins beat the New York Americans in 6 games to claim their first Stanley Cup title. Veteran Boston forward Lucas Drevenak was named playoff MVP after scoring 10 goals and 14 points in 12 post-season contests.

AMERICAN HOCKEY LEAGUE
The Springfield Indians again finished with the best record in the American League but were upset by 4th place Providence in the opening round of the playoffs. The Reds then took care of Buffalo in 6 games to win their first Calder Cup.

CANADIAN JUNIOR HOCKEY LEAGUE
The CJHL was dominated by the Quebec Remparts in the East and the Windsor Spitfires in the West. The Spitfires won 50 games and had 109 points but the Remparts had an even better year, going 55-6-7 to set a record with 117 points.

The two high-scoring clubs met in the Memorial Cup with the Remparts winning the series in 6 games. 19 year old Remparts winger Curtis Cooper led all players with 39 points in 22 playoff games. 18 year old Remparts defenseman Duncan Aykroyd was named the playoff MVP. The Toronto native had 7 goals and 23 assists in the playoffs.

Draft eligible forward Adam Lemaire of the Oshawa Generals had the best offensive season in the young league's history, scoring a record 132 points including 55 goals. Lemaire was selected second overall in the NHL draft by the Montreal Canadiens immediately after Detroit pick Sherbrooke Castors center Adam Mellor. Playoff MVP Aykroyd went in the third round to his hometown team Toronto.

1921-22

For the first time in league history there was a tie for top spot in the regular season. By virtue of more wins the New York Americans would repeat their first place finish of a year ago and the Boston Bruins would once again be second - for the fourth season in a row. Toronto and Chicago would round out the playoff berths as they each finished with 77 points.

The Bruins and Americans would both win their semi-final series' setting up a rematch of last year's Stanley Cup Finals. The Bruins took the first two games of the series on New York ice, winning each by a 3-2 score and then completed the sweep with a pair of victories on home ice to repeat as Cup Champions.

After four straight second place finishes the Boston Bruins finally claimed top spot in the regular season and they did so by finishing 16 points up on the second place New York Americans. Chicago was just one point back of the Americans but after that it was a huge drop off to fourth place Toronto.

For the third season in a row the Bruins and Americans met in the Stanley Cup finals and for the third straight time the Boston Bruins prevailed but this was the most exciting Cup final in history as the series went the full 7 games with 3 of them including the 7th game decided in overtime. 23 year old Boston winger Robbie Kellway was the overtime hero as he scored the winner in game 4 and again in game 7. 1923-24

The Boston Bruins dynasty continues as they win their fourth straight Stanley Cup by sweeping Chicago in the finals. The Bruins led the league in goals for thanks to the big line of Keegan Small, Lucas Drevenak and Jeff Brace. Boston also had the stingiest defense in the league thanks to another stellar campaign from 31 year old netminder Peter Rodina, who won the 4th Vezina Trophy of his career.

For the first time in franchise history the Detroit Red Wings made the playoffs as they held off Toronto for fourth place. The celebration was shortlived however as the Wings were eliminated in 5 games by Boston. Like the NHL the Calder Cup final would go the full seven games with Springfield prevailing over the Hershey Bears. The Indians have been the poster child franchise in the AHL, winning 3 Calder Cups and making the playoffs 7 out of the 8 seasons.

Parity was the name of the game in the regular season as 12 teams finished within 10 points of the Montreal Jr Canadiens, who led the CJHL with 88 points. Only the woeful London Knights, winners of just 9 games all season were not in contention for a playoff berth as the season wound down.

The Jr Canadiens would become the first two-time winner of the Memorial Cup after beating Medicine Hat in 4 straight games in the finals.

The Sault Ste Marie Greyhounds won their second Memorial Cup title by beating the Montreal Jr Canadiens in the finals. The Greyhounds and Jr Habs are the only teams to win the Cup twice. A pair of 18 year olds in Ottawa's Sherman Ayers and Wil Burrows of the Oshawa Generals dominated the league scoring. Ayers had 104 points while Burrows finished with an even 100. However, both slipped to the second round in the draft (Ayers to the Maroons and Burrows to Boston) as defenseman dominated the selections. 7 of the first 8 picks were rearguards including Sudbury's Ron Jewell, who went first overall to Detroit.

New York Americans forward Brandon Birston became the league's first 50 goal score as he notched the milestone marker in his club's final game of the season. His 95 points on the season were also a league record, and had he not missed 5 games late in the year with an injury he might have hit the century mark. The 28 year old, who has won 4 scoring titles and 1 Hart Trophy, is the career leader in goals with 306 and points with 669.

As has been the case in most recent seasons the Stanley Cup finals once again featured Birston's Americans against the Boston Bruins. The Bruins ended the Americans 3 year old on the Cup by taking the series in 4 straight games.

Cornwall won the Eastern Conference before falling to the Greyhounds. Cornwall boasted the league scoring champion in rookie center Chris Maxwell. Cornwall was led by highly touted 18 year old Chris Maxwell, who finished 4th in league scoring with 95 points before adding another 29 in the playoffs including 3 points in a 5-0 game 7 win over the Oil Kings.

Maxwell somehow dropped to third in the draft as the Maple Leafs grabbed the Toronto native after Detroit and the Montreal Canadiens passed on him. The Red Wings, a perennial basement dweller, took Montreal Jr Canadiens defenseman Matt Matwychuk first overall while the Habs opted for Peterborough Petes leftwinger Tyler Lockerby instead of the Maxwell. Matwychuk had 35 points and 215 penalty minutes for the Jr Canadiens this season while Lockerby was limited to just 38 games because of injury and averaged over a point a game for the Petes with 23 goals and 41 points. Maxwell, of course, won the CJHL scoring title as a 16 year old with 105 points and added another 95 points last season. He helped the Cornwall Royals to two straight Memorial Cup appearances.

1929-30

Boston and the New York Americans finished 1-2 in the standings but for a change the two clubs did not meet in the Stanley Cup Finals. The Bruins did their part, knocking out Toronto in 5 games in what was the Leafs first trip to the playoffs since 1923-24. The New York Americans failed to advance as they fell in 6 games to the Montreal Canadiens. It was just the third time in franchise history the Habs made the playoffs and this was their first-ever trip to the finals.

Montreal put up a brave effort but the Canadiens were no match for Boston as the Bruins took the series in 6 games. Boston is clearly a dynasty as the Bruins have won 7 Stanley Cups including the last 3. The rest of the league has combined for 6 Cups with 3 going to the Americans, 2 to the Maroons and 1 to Chicago.

There is a dynasty being built in the AHL as well and it belongs to the Leafs farm team as the Cleveland Barons won their 4th straight Calder Cup. It was a tight race amongst the 4 playoff teams as the Barons and Pittsburgh Hornets finished tied with 90 points while Quebec and Rochester each had 88 points. Fifth place Hershey was well off the pace.

CANADIAN JUNIOR HOCKEY LEAGUE
The Montreal Jr Canadiens joined Sault Ste. Marie as the only 3 time winners of the Memorial Cup after the Jr Habs knocked off Medicine Hat in the finals. Despite a second scoring title in 3 seasons from Chris Maxwell, the Cornwall Royals bowed out in the opening round of the playoffs. Maxwell, taken 3rd overall by the Leafs last year, had a career best 43 goals to go along with 54 assists for 97 points.

1930-31

The Boston Bruins and New York Americans kept their playoff streaks alive as the Bruins qualified for the 13th straight season and the Americans for the 11th in a row. The Americans needed to win 4 of their final 5 games to keep the streak going and perhaps that pressure had them better prepared for the playoffs as they knocked off first place Chicago in 7 grueling games. Boston swept the Montreal Maroons to set up yet another Boston-Americans final.

The Americans were out of gas in the finals and the Bruins cruised to their 8th Stanley Cup title with a 4 game sweep.

While it remains to be seem what he might accomplish at the NHL level there is little doubt that Chris Maxwell will go down in history as one of the best junior players of all-time. Returned by the Toronto Maple Leafs to Cornwall for a fourth season in the CJHL, all Maxwell did was win his third league scoring title and become the all-time leader in goals, assists and points as well as set a new single season record with 59 goals. Oh, and he added 50 more points in 24 playoff games to lead the Royals to their second Memorial Cup and third finals appearance while he was with the team.

Cornwall beat Medicine Hat, a team that has made three trips to the Memorial Cup finals but has yet to win one.

1931-32

The Montreal Maroons won their 3rd Stanley Cup, but first one since the opening 2 years of the league in 1918 and 1919. The Maroons swept the New York Americans in the finals after the Americans had taken care of defending champion Boston in the semi-finals. Veteran Boston forward Keegan Small set a record for points in a season with 99 and also passed aging New York American Brandon Birston for the all-time scoring lead. The 31 year old Small has led the NHL in scoring 5 times in his career.

Toronto eases 21 year old Chris Maxwell in to the starting lineup as the junior phenom slowly sees his minutes increase during the season. Maxwell appears in all 78 games for the Leafs and scores 12 goals while adding 20 assists for 32 points. Those totals are good enough to garner the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year for Maxwell in a veteran dominated league.

1932-33

Most of Boston's top talent is beginning to age but the veteran Bruins still had at least one more big year left in them as they claimed top spot in the regular season standings for the first time since 1930. 32 year old forwards Keegan Small and Jeff Brace continued to pace the Bruins attack but the real key this season was the goaltending of 30 year old Andre Ravelli, who led the league in goals against average and victories. It was Ravelli's second year with the Bruins after he spent 8 years toiling in the AHL for 4 different organizations.

While the Bruins consecutive playoff season streak remained intact at 15 years and counting, the New York Americans streak came to an end as they missed the playoffs for the first time since 1920. The Toronto Maple Leafs, led by 21 year old Chris Maxwell (19-32-51) edged out the Americans by one point for the final playoff berth.

The Leafs would fall in 7 games to Boston in the semi-finals while the Montreal Maroons would beat Chicago 4 games to two in the other series. In the finals the Maroons beat Boston in 6 games to repeat as Cup Champions.

The Montreal Jr Canadiens became the first 4-time winner of the Memorial Cup after the baby Habs disposed of Sault Ste Marie in 5 games in the championship series. The Greyhounds dominated the league in the regular season, losing just 6 games all year and breezed through the playoffs with a sweep of Regina, a 6 game series with Windsor and a sweep of Guelph before running into the Canadiens, who lost just 2 playoff games themselves.

Guelph Biltmore Madhatters 18 year old winger Andy Smutny had a breakout year as he won the scoring title with 104 points including 54 goals. It was a shock when Smutny did not hear his name called until the 7th round of the NHL draft, when he was selected by the Montreal Maroons. Sudbury goaltender Max Holden became the first netminder ever selected first overall when he was taken by the Montreal Canadiens.

1933-34

The Boston Bruins retooled dealing NHL alltime scoring leader Keegan Small to Toronto and his longtime winger Jeff Brace to the New York Americans while adding some youth as well as 35 year old Brandon Birston, who had been a fixture with the Americans. Goaltender Andre Ravelli had another strong season in net for the Bruins and longtime Bruin Andy Krueckl had a breakout year at age 34, leading the league in scoring after doubling his previous best season points-wise. The result was yet another first place finish for the mighty Bruins.

The Detroit Red Wings made the playoffs for just the second time in franchise history and won their first ever playoff series by beating the Maroons in the semi-finals. Up 3 games to one on Boston it looked like the Wings were poised to win their first Cup but the Bruins roared back with 3 straight victories to win their 9th title.

Boston took game five in overtime on a goal by Stan Evans, who was one of the players that came over from the Americans in the Keegan Small deal. Game six was a 2-0 shutout thanks to the goaltending of Ravelli and 2 goals off the stick of Blake Kirkup, a former Memorial Cup winner with the Jr Canadiens. In game seven Ravelli was again the story as the Wings outshot Boston 36-19 but lost by a 3-1 score.

While the NHL Canadiens continue to struggle the junior Habs are building a dynasty in the CJHL. The Jr Canadiens had the best regular season record and parlayed that into a second straight Memorial Cup title - the fifth in franchise history. The Jr Canadiens swept the Edmonton Oil Kings in the finals.

--------------------------------------------------

1934-35

One of the tighter races in recent memory as just 5 points seperated the top 5 clubs with the Boston Bruins once again claiming top spot. However, the Bruins - who defeated Detroit in the finals last year - fell to the fourth place Red Wings in one semi-final. The Wings actually finished tied with the New York Americans for the final playoff spot but Detroit advanced on the basis of more victories.

After the Wings knocked off the defending champs they faced the Montreal Maroons in the finals. The Maroons would win the series in 6 games and claim their 3rd Cup in the past 4 years and 5th title overall.

Boston's Andy Krueckl became the first player in NHL history to break the 100 point plateau as he led the league with 102 points on 48 goals and 54 assists. The 35 year old has been with the Bruins since 1918 but always seemed to be in a support role behind the great Keegan Small. Now that Small is gone to Toronto, Krueckl stepped up to the first line and number one powerplay unit and has seen his career take off at time when most would be figuring it was close to retirement.

Speaking of Small, he had just 28 points with Toronto this season and now has 1074 for his career. He has lost the all time scoring lead to Chicago's Les Gerling, who now has 1,146 points and is just 2 goals away from becoming the first 500 goal scorer in league history.

The Marlboros were seeded 4th in the East as the powerful Montreal Jr Canadiens again finished with the most points in the Conference. Toronto knocked out Montreal in the conference semi-finals sweeping the baby Habs in 4 games.

A couple of Ottawa 67s led the scoring race as 19 year old winger Baron Moosuk led the CJHL with 112 points. Moosuk was taken 8th overall by the Boston Bruins in last June's draft. His teammate, 17 year old draft eligible center Chris Bishop, finsihed second in scoring with 111 points.

A month after the season Bishop was drafted second overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs. The New York Rangers selected Flin Flon Bombers defenseman Joey Johnson first overall. Johnson, a Vancouver native, had 12 goals and 48 points this season.

1935-36

Another first place finish for the mighty Boston Bruins, a team that has not missed the playoffs since the league's first year in 1917-18. The Bruins have retooled their roster a fair bit over the last few seasons but continue to win. Boston's newest star is 26 year old winger Neil Frank. A former first overall pick in the CJHL draft by Peterborough and then a first overall pick in the NHL draft by Toronto, Frank bounced around the American Hockey League before being signed by Boston 2 years ago. After a 55 point season that earned him NHL rookie of the year honours last season the 26 year old led the Bruins this year with 83 points.

The only young player considered to be better than Frank right now is Toronto's Chris Maxwell. Despite just turning 25 Maxwell is already a 5 year veteran of the NHL and enjoyed a career season with 93 points including a record 53 goals. However, it was not enough to help the Leafs into the playoffs.

Speaking of the playoffs, the Montreal Maroons took care of Boston in 6 games to reach the finals where they faced off with the Chicago Blackhawks. The Hawks needed an overtime goal from Micheal Fillion in game seven to beat Detroit in the other semi-final. The finals also went the full seven games and the Hawks needed a win in game six and then an overtime goal in the 7th game from Christian Valente to claim their second Stanley Cup title in franchise history.

The Quebec Remparts won the Memorial Cup by sweeping the Windsor Spitfires in the finals. The Remparts were led by 17 year old winger Chad Sumi, who led the CJHL in goals with 50. The points leader was another 17 year old in Sudbury's Lenny Larson, who had 48 goals and 53 assists for 101 points.

Larson would be selected 7th overall by Detroit in the NHL entry draft while Sumi would last until the end of the second round when the Boston Bruins selected him. The first overall pick was smooth-skating Ottawa 67s defenseman Bill Schneekloth (19-64-83) by the New York Rangers.

1936-37

The story of the year was the dominant season put up by 26 year old Chris Maxwell. Expected to be a star right from his first year of junior with Cornwall, Maxwell finally lived up to the billing and beyond by scoring a record 110 points and leading the Leafs back to the playoffs for the first time in 5 years.

The Leafs finished tied with the Detroit Red Wings for first place in the NHL with the Maroons and Boston tying for third. For the Bruins it would be their 19th straight season in which they made the postseason.

The Wings would go on to win their first Stanley Cup after beating the Bruins in 5 games and then knocking off Toronto also in 5. Leafs center Maxwell would lead all playoff performers with 18 points, including 8 goals, in 12 games.

The Rochester Americans defeated the Cleveland Barons in a 6 game Calder Cup final to win the trophy for the fourth time in franchise history. Only the Barons, with 5, have hoisted more Calder Cups.

CANADIAN JUNIOR HOCKEY LEAGUE

The Windsor Spitfires had the best record in the regular season and went on to defeat the team with the second best regular season record in the Memorial Cup finals. The Spitfires, first time winners of the Cup, had little trouble beating Eastern champion Niagara Falls in 5 games. Windsor's toughest test came in the Western Final when they needed the full 7 games to knock off the Flin Flon Bombers.

Toronto Maple Leaf draft pick Shayne Sandwith was the leader for the Spitfires. The 19 year old left winger had 28 playoff points after scoring 110 points during the regular season. He likely would have won the scoring title had he not missed 7 games with an injury. The scoring title went to Quebec Remparts forward Chad Sumi (58-56-114) who led the league in goals for the second straight season.

1937-38

The Detroit Red Wings repeated as regular season champion as they put on an offensive display all season. Forwards Austin Shabaga and Kory Stamler provided the scoring up front while 38 year old rearguard Tom Nemec set a record with 71 assists.

Boston rallied late in the season to keep their amazing playoff streak alive and that rally cost the Toronto Maple Leafs a playoff spot. The Leafs had a tough season with a number of injuries. Center Chris Maxwell did not get injured but he struggled early and finished with just 68 points after recording a record 110 a year ago.

The woeful New York Rangers finished dead last for the fifth straight year and have not made a playoff appearance in the past decade.

In the playoffs the Boston Bruins continued their red-hot play to close out the season and they disposed of Detroit in 5 games before knocking off the Montreal Maroons, also in 5, to claim the Bruins 10th Stanley Cup.

The Rochester Americans won their second straight Calder Cup, and 5th overall, by beating the Quebec Aces in the finals. The Cleveland Barons finished with the best regular season record but fell to the Aces in a 7 game semi-final.

CANADIAN JUNIOR HOCKEY LEAGUE
The London Knights have suffered through some terrible seasons with none worse than going 4-58-6 just 2 years ago but the turnaround in junior hockey can be quick and the Knights were rewarded with their first Memorial Cup championship after posting the league's best regular season mark this year. The Knights led by defenseman Jeremy Labrecque, who was chosen first overall after their dismal 4 win season, beat Ottawa in a 7 game final.

The Knights offense was led by 17 year old Charlie St. Martin (40-62-102) and his linemate 19 yer old Kevin McLaughlin (49-49-98). The league scoring leader was once again Chad Sumi, the 20 year old Quebec Remparts pivot who tallied 126 points including 51 goals. Sumi will graduate from the junior league third all-time in points with 384, trailing only Chris Maxwell (418), the former Cornwall Royal and current Toronto Maple Leaf, and Matt Jambrosich (387) who played for Brandon and is now with the Boston Bruins.

In the June draft the New York Rangers took Labrecque first overall while St. Martin was a second round pick of Detroit's.

1938-39

The New York Rangers went from last the year before to second place thanks to the decision to give the number one goaltending job to Bill Horvath. The 24 year old had never played more than 19 games a season for the Blueshirts but this year he appeared in 68 games and posted a league best 2.87 goals against average. The Rangers had limited offensive talent but a big chunk of it started with the puck on the stick of 21 year old rearguard Joey Johnson. The former first overall pick out of Flin Flon had a breakout season in his second year in the NHL, tallying 16 goals and 32 assists.

Offense was over-rated this year, at least from the league's highest scoring team as the Toronto Maple Leafs, despite a return to form from Chris Maxwell and having 6 of the league's top 10 scorers, missed the playoffs.

Boston, a fixture in the postseason, qualified yet again by leading the league in points but the Bruins had an epic playoff collapse, blowing a 3-games to none lead and falling in 7 in the semi-finals to Chicago. The other semi-final also went 7 games as Detroit beat the Rangers. The finals were much closer than the 4 games to one Detroit victory might indicate - four of the 5 games were decided by just one goal and 3 of them in overtime.

It was Detroit's second Cup in 3 seasons. We have not had a repeat winner, which used to be commonplace, since the Maroons in 1932 and 33.

AMERICAN HOCKEY LEAGUE
Just like the parent Boston Bruins, the Rochester Americans are building a dynasty in the AHL. The Amerks won the Calder Cup for a record 6th time including their third in a row. Rochester finished third in the regular season but beat second place Cleveland in a 7 game semi-final before disposing of fourth place Springfield, which had upset Pittsburgh in the other semi, in 6 games.

CANADIAN JUNIOR HOCKEY LEAGUE

The Montreal Jr Canadiens won the Memorial Cup for the 6th time, 3 more than any other franchise. The Jr Habs have been the marquee squad of the CJHL, missing the playoffs only twice in their history. The Jr Canadiens knocked off defending champion London in the finals. Only the Soo Greyhounds, with 101, and Quebec, with 96, had more points the the 94 amassed during the regular season by Montreal.

The playoff hero was Montreal's Carl Gagnon. A 20 year old winger who began his junior career with Quebec before being dealt to the Canadiens last season, Gagnon had 18 goals and 42 points in 24 playoff games to be named the post-season MVP. He was a 4th round pick of the Chicago Blackhawks 2 years ago.

Sault Ste Marie 17 year old winger Hugh Guy had a second straight 100-plus point season and led the league in scoring with 105. Guy was selected 5th overall in the NHL draft after the season by the Chicago Blackhawks. The top pick was Josh Cassidy, a leftwinger who had 36 goals and 78 points for the Toronto Marlboros this season. He was taken by the Montreal Canadiens.

1939-40

Long-time followers of the league would think the standings were posted upside down as powerhouse Boston finally missed the playoffs for the first time since 1918 and for the first time in league history neither the Bruins, Americans or Maroons - three teams that combined for 18 of the 22 Stanley Cups awarded - will be in the playoffs. Instead three teams that have suffered through some very lean seasons made the playoffs. The Red Wings were the worst team of the 1920's but have won a couple of Cups recently and finished with the league's best record. The Rangers made it two playoff years in a row after a number of seasons in the league basement and the Montreal Canadiens made the playoffs for just the fourth time in team history and the first since 1931.

Some new names started to appear on the scoring leaderboard as most of the games stars from the first decade of the league are now long retired. Chicago's Greg Rennie led the league in scoring as the 27 year old broke his previous career best by 22 points. Rennie played 4 seasons in Regina of the CJHL before being drafted by the Leafs 13th overall in the 1930 rookie draft. He bounced between Cleveland of the AHL and Toronto for 5 seasons before finding new life after a trade to Chicago.

One old name that is still going strong at the age of 40 is Detroit defenseman Tom Nemec. The 4 time league MVP has been a fixture on the Wings blueline since 1918-19 and had an amazing season considering his age - finishing 5th in league scoring.

In the playoffs the Red Wings outlasted Chicago in seven hard fought back and forth games while the Rangers dispatched the Canadiens in 5 games. 5 would be the magic number for New York as the Rangers won their first Stanley Cup in 5 games over the Wings. Makes you wondering if years from now we will be listening to rival fans chanting 1940! 1940! at the Rangers. 25 year old winger Keenan Kord, who had 37 points in the regular season, was the playoff hero for the Rangers with 2 goals in a 4-3 victory in the deciding game and 13 points in 10 playoff games.

Rochester led the AHL in regular season points but the Americans fell short of winning their fourth straight Calder Cup as second place Providence knocked the Amerks off in a 6 game final. Jordan Bickell, who was traded by the New York Rangers to the Montreal Maroons organization in exchange for NHL playoff hero Keenan Kord, had a huge year for the Pittsburgh Hornets, leading the league in scoring with 91 points - becoming just the third AHL player to top the 90 point mark in a season.

CANADIAN JUNIOR HOCKEY LEAGUE
Another dominant season by the Montreal Jr Canadiens as they finished with a league best 117 points (56-7-5) and then went 16-1 in the playoffs culminating with a 4 game sweep of the Western Conference champion Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds.

The story of the league was the breakout year by 19 year old Jr Canadiens center Frank Padish. After scoring 42 points last season and being drafted in the the third round by the NHL's Canadiens, Padish went on a tear, scoring 121 points including 59 goals in 68 games. His point total is the third highest single season mark in league history. He won the scoring title by 14 points over Peterborough's Kyle Barnes with the Greyhounds Hugh Guy third.

The NHL draft focused on the blueline as 5 of the top 8 picks including the first 3 were defenseman. The Maroons picked first and took Edmonton Oil Kings rearguard Patrick Mathers (6-27-33) number one followed by the Marlboros Ryan Wall (14-38-52) to the New York Americans and Boston took Flin Flon's Derek Rydall (7-35-42) third despite the fact Rydall missed half the season with a knee injury.

Now that I have caught up to my baseball dynasty and it is October of 1940 I will slow the pace and go into more detail on my recaps.

I will cross-post much of the material here as the goal is to have my hockey, baseball and football fictional leagues run concurrently.

Before we begin the 1940-41 season here is a preview to help you get a little more familiar with the key players on each team.

OCTOBER 1940
NHL SEASON PREVIEW 1940-41

The National Hockey League is set to begin it's 24th season of operation in a few days and here is a look at each of the 8 teams. Most experts figure the Boston Bruins will return to the playoffs after a 1 year absence and the league's most successful team is pegged to battle with the New York Rangers and Detroit Red Wings for top spot in the league. Toronto is favoured to grab the fourth and final playoff spot leaving the Montreal Canadiens, Maroons, New York Americans and Chicago Blackhawks on the outside come the end of March.

BOSTON BRUINS: With 10 Stanley Cup banners and 22 playoff appearances in 24 years the Bruins are the NHL's model franchise. The Bruins seemed to make a seemless transfer from their stars of the 1920's - Keegan Small, Andy Krueckl and Boris Vrabel - to the modern day and a huge reason for that success was the goaltending of Andre Ravelli.

Ravelli did not break into the NHL until 1931-32 at the age of 28 and has played virtually every game for the Bruins since then. He is now 38 and showing signs of slowing down as his rising goals against average and dropping save percentage the last couple of seasons have indicated. He is still the only experienced goalie in the Bruins system and will be once again counted on to lead the team. Missing the playoffs last season and posting the worst numbers of his career has led many to speculate he may be at the end of the road but he may also use that adversity to motivate him to have one more great season.

The Bruins roster from last year remains almost unchanged with the lone newcomer likely to be 19 year old defenseman Derek Rydall. Rydall averaged over a point a game with the Flin Flon Bombers in junior but saw his season cut short last year thanks to a devasting knee injury. He is recovered and looked like he would fit in nicely as the point man on the Bruins powerplay. The big question is does he have the experience to take a regular shift five-on-five this year.

The offensive leader for Boston is 30 year old winger Neil Frank. His point production dipped to 68 last season but he is still the only Bruin who consistantly ranks among the league scoring leaders. Frank is joined on the top line by 23 year old Gabryel Roy, who is entering his 4th season with the Bruins and scored a career high 44 points last year, and 28 year old Matt Jambrosich. Jambrosich, who had a career high 57 points last year, is a former Toronto Maple Leaf and has won scoring titles in both the CJHL and AHL.

CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS: With 2 Stanley Cups and playoff berths each of the past 3 seasons the Blackhawks have enjoyed modest success through the years. The big news in the off-season was the decision to trade their second leading scorer from last year Etienne Chicoine (40-35-75) to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for 32 year old Jarryd Barczai and a prospect. Barczai had 65 points for Montreal last year and should make a good number two center behind Greg Rennie, the 28 year old who had a breakout season last year and led the league in scoring with 91 points.

The leader on the blueline is 27 year old Keith Hansen, who had 57 points last season and will play over 25 minutes a game. 25 year old Lenny Slotkowski was a 5th overall pick and finally got a chance to be a number one NHL goalie last season. The Hawks hope he will improve on his 3.46 GAA and .881 save percentage this time around.

DETROIT RED WINGS: The Wings were the league doormat for much of the 1920's but the club has been much better the past decade, making 7 straight playoff appearances and winning a pair of Stanley Cup titles. However, the retirement of Tom Nemec over the summer leaves a huge hole on their blueline. As a 40 year old last season Nemec still put up 72 points to cap a career that saw him scoring 1187 points in 1635 career NHL games while winning 3 Norris Trophy's and 4 League MVP awards.

Nemec's retirement gives 21 year old Ben Gerber a shot as a regular on the Detroit blueline. Gerber had 14 points in 41 games in the Motor City last year. The pressure will be on 24 year old Andrew Brown (8-29-37) who moves up to the top D-pair with veteran Joey Chapman (14-30-44) and will be counted on to quarterback the powerplay.

All of the key forwards return including the top line of 31 year old Anthony Manca(34-45-79) between 25 year old Cody McCann (31-38-69) and 28 year old Kingston Morrison (33-30-63). Captain Austin Shabaga (22-19-41) has seen his production dip in recent years but he will provide leadership. 23 year old Lenny Larson, who won a CJHL scoring title with Sudbury a few years back, may get a chance to show he is NHL ready.

In net the Wings have veteran Dylan Turnbull. Actually the 40 year old is well beyond veteran status. He has been the Wings goaltender since 1919-20 and leads all NHL goalies in games played and losses. His lifetime record is 610-705-235 but he is coming off of a 44 win season that saw him post a 2.80 GAA and a .905 save percentage. He has won the Vezina Trophy each of the past 7 seasons.

MONTREAL CANADIENS: Positives have been few and far between for the Canadiens. The team has never won a Stanley Cup and only made 4 playoff appearances in 24 years. The good news is that last year was one of the four.

They dealt their leading scorer from last year to Chicago in exchange for French-Canadian Etienne Chicoine and he should be Montreal's best player this year. The Habs are a young team and a return to the playoffs this year is unlikely unless 25 year old goaltender Max Holden carries them their. The former Sudbury Wolve already has 4 full seasons and 326 career NHL games under his belt. He had a 3.03 GAA and a .906 save percentage a year ago.

MONTREAL MAROONS: The Maroons have fallen on hard times, missing the playoffs each of the past two years but prior they challenged Boston for the top team of the past decade, winning 3 cups in a 4 year span and making 8 straight playoff appearances. Last year the Maroons finished last for just the second time in franchise history.

With an eye towards rebuilding the Maroons traded 39 year old winger Adam Babych to Toronto for a pair of minor leaguers. Babych was the face of the franchise for much of his career but he dropped to a career low 26 points last season. 35 year old Anton Kazanski (15-43-58) is still around and he led the team in scoring last year.

Goaltending is a big issue as 30 year old Dillon Benoit struggled last year, posting the lowest save percentage out of the league's starting goalies. A number of rookies both up front and on the blueline will be given a chance to show what they can do but the odds are greatly stacked against the Maroons making the playoffs this season.

NEW YORK AMERICANS: They challenged the Boston Bruins for the title of league's best team for the first 15 years of the NHL, winning 3 Cups, but the past decade has not been kind to the Americans as they have not played a playoff game since 1932-33.

The Americans are led by their 4 veterans but the on-ice impact of those 4 is quickly waning. Wingers Les Gerling and Jeff Brace are both 39 now and are no where near as productive as they were in their prime. Brace, who spent most of his career in Boston before moving to the Americans in 1933-34 has 1317 career points including 45 earned last year. Gerling, who is the only player with more career points than Brace (1343) and is the all-time career goal leader with 578, spent most of his career in Chicago before being dealt to the Americans in 1935-36. He posted a career worst 6 goals and 18 points last year.

Stronach is a 41 year old rearguard who was dealt to the Americans from Chicago at the same time as Gerling. He is the team captain but saw his ice time reduced last year as he was dropped from the top D pairing to the third line. Tyler Kennedy is the only one of the four who is expected to play a major role again this season. The goaltender played 78 games last year and is the all-time leader in wins and shutouts.

NEW YORK RANGERS: The Rangers recently had a string of 5 straight last place finishes but they broke that with 2 straight playoff appearances including their first Stanley Cup title last year. They have a young team with a load of talent and should be a factor for the next few years at the very least. If I was picking the next dynasty in the NHL it would definitely be the Rangers.

26 year old goaltender Bill Horvath is in his prime and coming off of 2 strong seasons as a starter. 23 year old defenseman Joey Johnson won a Norris Trophy at the age of 21 and seems to be getting better every year. The former Flin Flon Bomber had 38 points last season and plays regularly against the other teams top line.

Up front the Blueshirts are led by 32 year old Robert Dirk, the oldest player on the team. Dirk had 72 points a year ago and may improve on that total this year as his young linemates Nicolas Frenette and Dominick Berube gain experience. The 21 year old Berube had 62 points and was named NHL rookie of the year last season. Berube has also won rookie of the year honours in the AHL and the CJHL. Frenette, 24, is a former CJHL MVP and had 71 points for the Rangers last season.

TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS: An almost forgotten franchise, the Leafs have just meandered through the years. In the early days they made 6 playoff appearances in the first 7 years of the league but generally just snuck in as the 4th place team. Since then they have been stuck as an almost middle of the pack team...occasionally sneaking into the final playoff spot but generally finishing 5th or 6th. Not good enough to make the playoffs but not quite bad enough to get the top draft pick. (Sounds a lot like real life doesn't it).

The Leafs have a superstar in 29 year old Chris Maxwell. He is the greatest scorer in CJHL history and seems to alternate between great and average seasons in the NHL. Here are his point totals for the past 4 years: 110,68,95,69. If the pattern continues he will dominate the league this year and that may be enough to grab the final playoff spot. The Leafs also are hoping to get offense from another gifted young center in 23 year old Chris Bishop, who had 70 points two years ago but was limited to just 8 games last year because of a back injury.

Offense has rarely been an issue for Toronto in recent years. Keeping the puck out of their own net has been the problem. Goaltender Marc-Andre Baribeau has spent over a decade as the Leafs starting netminder but he has had some rough years, although he could sue his defense for non-support on many occasions.

LEAFS OFF TO FAST START

The Toronto Maple Leafs have jumped out in front of the pack after a little over a dozen games to start the NHL season. As usual the Leafs are taking advantage of having the most potent offense in the game. Through 13 games the Leafs have scored 59 goals, 12 more than the next highest team.

Leading the way for Toronto has been centre Chris Bishop who has a league-high 21 points. Not bad for the 25 year old who missed all but 8 games last year with a ruptured disc in his back.

AMERICANS ACQUIRE FRANK

The New York Americans made a major deal this week, giving up a big chunk of their future in exchange for a proven goal scorer. The Americans dealt highly touted defense prospect Chad Gauthier to the Boston Bruins in exchange for veteran sniper Neil Frank.

The 31 year old Frank had 31 goals and 68 points a year ago and was off to a fast start again this season with 8 goals and 8 helpers through 13 games with the Bruins. The 1934-35 rookie of the year, Frank has played 460 career NHL games, all with the Bruins, and has 444 points. He is expected to make his debut for the Americans on Friday in Toronto.

Gauthier, who will turn 20 in December, spent 3 seasons with the Regina Pats of the CJHL before being assigned to Buffalo of the AHL this season. In 13 games on the Bisons blueline he had 3 goals and 9 points. The Americans had selected him 10th overall in the 1939 draft. The Bruins have called him up from the AHL and are expected to have him in their lineup sometime this week.

The Bruins have made it a habit of dealing aging star players while their return is still high and have been very successful at keeping the team competitive. Among players dealt by Boston in their early to mid thirties are the great Keegan Small and defenseman Boris Vrabel.

MARLIES LIGHTING UP THE CJHL

The Toronto Marlboros are the hottest team in the junior leagues as they have won 8 games in a row and are 9-1-3 on the season. At the other end of the spectrum are the Cornwall Royals, who are tied for last in the Eastern Conference despite have the league's top two scorers. Keeping the puck out of the net has been the Royals problem but offense is no issue thanks to the play of sensational 16 year old rookie Dean Goodyear (8-16-24) and his center 18 year old Eric Rufenach (6-18-24) who are tied for the CJHL scoring lead.

CJHL PRESEASON PREDICTIONS
The CJHL preview pegged the Windsor Spitfires as the team to beat with Oshawa and Guelph other teams to watch. The Spitfires have struggled in the early going and the loss of 18 year old goaltender Brent Walton for a month will make matters worse.

Players to watch this season include Sudbury's Carson Reimer and St. Catharines' Chris Seftel. Reimer was the Rangers first round pick after scoring 40 goals and 39 assists for the Wolves last season. Seftel is a center taken by Boston in the second round of last June's draft. He had 71 points for the Teepees last year. Flin Flon's Rylan Farynuk is also tabbed as a potential scoring champ. The 18 year old was selected by the Maroons after putting up 83 points for the Bombers last year.

New York Americans prospect Ryan Wall of the Toronto Marlboros is considered to be far and away the best defenseman in the CJHL. He had 52 points last season before being drafted second overall.
