Birdie Tebbetts 1954
I always think of managers before 1965 or so as a grizzled, veteran bunch who were getting a second or third shot at helming a club. In point of fact, six of the eight skippers George Heyer captured for SPORT's September 1956 issue were still on their first major league job, and Birdie Tebbetts of the Reds was tied with Walt Alston and Stan Hack as senior NL manager in point of continuous service - at just three years!
Tebbetts would last in Cincinnati until 1958 (his first two full-time successors would be Mayo Smith and Fred Hutchinson), later manage Milwaukee and Cleveland, and serve as a super scout and floating executive for the Yankees well into the '90s. Last edited by Merkle923; 08-05-2017 at 11:42 AM. |

Jim Marshall
I'm in need of a non-baseball card image of Marshall when he managed the Oakland A's in 1979. The only pic I can find is a very blurry team photo of him.
Thanks! |

Jim Marshall
This probably won't suffice, but at least it will give you an option to review. It's from a newspaper (I neglected to record the name) of Feb. 13, 1979, right after Marshall was named the new manager of the A's. Although it doesn't show him in an A's uniform, you will notice that there is an A's cap in the photo. All the other pics I found associated with the news announcements of his new managerial post had him in a Chicago Cubs uniform.

Bobby Cox - 1978
I only just realized Bobby's 1978 Topps card is a paint job...looking for a nice color image of him during his first stint with the Braves, from 1978 preferably, but any image in which he's wearing the appropriate uniform (no 1979 red warm up jerseys, please) would be great.
Many thanks! |

Merry Christmas #3: Salty Parker 1967
Here's the higher-quality scan of the Dexter Press photo of Parker in spring training of his only season with the New York Mets - which saw him finish the year as interim manager.
A 1966 scan of Parker from his coaching tenure with the Angels is in the coaches' thread: http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...ml#post4129107 Last edited by Merkle923; 08-05-2017 at 11:43 AM. |

MISSING Manager 1884 Chicago/Pittsburgh Stogies Union Association
I found the passport photo for Ed Hengel who managed the Chicago/Pittsburgh Stogies of the Union Association in 1884 on familysearch. Confirmation is that his witness was his brother Emory, who also played major league baseball.

MISSING Manager George Frazer (Frazier) 1890 Syracuse Stars
I've located the photo of another missing manager, George Frazer, who managed the Syracuse Stars in 1890. There was a nice write up of him that appeared in the May 19, 1910 Syracuse Daily Journal. I've attached the photo and article.
The photo of Frazer also looks somewhat like the man in the suit labelled as Jack Chapman in the 1889 Syracuse Stars team photo linked below. Frazer was the owner of the Stars that year, so I think it may be him. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_C...Stars_1889.JPG |

MISSING Manager George McManus 1876-1877 St. Louis Brown Stockings
I found this one a while back, but I realize I hadn't posted. It is an illustrated woodcut of George McManus in the July 31, 1892 St. Louis Post Dispatch. Not a traditional woodcut, since it's more a cartoon, but the only one I've found thus far.

I've seen this one also. I'm going to leave him on the list for now, still holding out hope for something more representative (I would imagine) of his actual appearance.

Unglaub was one of four Boston managers in 1907. He played for the Americans from 1904-08 and was shown in the Washington Times on 19-Jul-1908, wearing a uniform style used from 1904-07. He was also included in the 1907 team photo, sitting in the center of the photo in the traditional manager's position.

First of all thanks to all that have posted the manager images.
I am organizing manager pictures year by year and a folder of all the manager images i can find. The year by year is so that if i want to have say Sparky Anderson's Reds picture and not his Tiger picture. In the main folder i guess i will just have to choose. Also in the year by year folder i am trying to pick pictures as a manager ages and making sure he doesnt have a wrong team uniform. Wish i could do the same for player photos. Its nice to have Yogi Berra but having Berra in a Astros uniform in 1956 just doesn't seem right. The way i was thinking is i could just copy and paste each years photos. Of course i know you cant get every single year for every player but maybe just a snapshot progression. Anyway what do you guys think? |

Wes Westrum 1975
Does anyone have any sharp color of Wes Westrum during his 1975 season as Giants manager?
Thanks to the researchers here. |
