"Pongo Joe" Cantillon (he got the nickname while playing in 19th Century California; that's about all we're sure of) managed the Washington Senators for three seasons starting in 1907 and accomplished three things:

1. He managed to not finish last in 1908 (in fact, his 7th place Senators were only 18 games under .500; the other two Nats teams he ran lost 102 and 110 teams respectively);

2. When one of his catchers, Cliff Blankenship, was injured in 1907, Cantillon bought him a railroad ticket and sent him to see a guy pitching in amateur ball in Idaho that a fan had been writing Cantillon about for years. Blankenship scouted and signed the guy - Walter Johnson - and on the same trip also obtained long-time center fielder Clyde Milan for Washington;

3. He got himself on one of the Barr-Farnham postcards we've been posting in the players' thread:

I am finally comfortable crossing Price off the Missing Manager list. I located a photo accompanying an article announcing his death in the 31-Oct-1925 Oak Park (IL) Leaf. Unfortunately the digital rendition cloaks him in shadow to the point that he is essentially unidentifiable.

In addition to the Oak Park image, I have known about the 1884 New York Gothams photo shown below for many years but the suited subjects in the center of the photo were unidentified. In looking at it again this morning I am confident that the dark-suited person on the left is team owner John Day. It stands to reason, then that the light-suited subject next to him is Price. This image is much clearer and, although I can't yet independently confirm that the light-suited man is Price, I will insert it, at least for now, into the Managers folder of the Facepack knowing that there is a confirmed image to fall back on if information emerges showing that someone other than Price is pictured.

If they all go in the same folder, is there a way to differentiate between player/manager/umpire (i.e. can I put the managers/umpires in a sub-folder)?

There was recently some discussion about Jerry Coleman as Padres' manager on the major league players' thread. I have a rather poor photo of him in a Padres' uniform. The photo came from a newspaper. If anyone has a reasonably good photo of him as a Padre, I would appreciate their posting it in this thread. Thanks.

A quickie search turned up a few more.

We have a photo from what looks like Shea to me. No hat (sorry). Comes from the LuLac collection via Google image search.

The B&W is from a completed listing on eBay (seller rfleetjr).

The last one is from a series of promotional sheets issued by the Family Fun Center, also from a completed eBay offering (seller baseball125years). Wish I'd known about that one, cause I'd have bid on it. Oh, well, something new to track down.

I'm normally a nervous nelly about reproduction rights, but what follows comes from the long-defunct SPORT Magazine and while its last owner maintains a small business publishing art-quality prints of some of the publication's most famous images (like the "Boys Of Summer" shot of Brooklyn Dodgers around the Ebbets Field batting cage) at http://thesportgallery.com, it can be argued that its other images are fair game if not used for profit, and if properly acknowledged.

In any event, in September 1956 SPORT published insider assessments of each of the eight National League managers, complete with pretty good color photographs by George Heyer, who later did a lot of shooting for Topps in New York.

So acknowledging these are SPORT photos taken by the great Mr. Heyer, here are the eight NL Managers of 1956, starting with Brooklyn's Walt Alston:

You've probably seen this image before - only with faded colors and no crediting. This shot of then-rookie Pittsburgh manager Bragan is also from the September, 1956 issue of SPORT Magazine, and taken by George Heyer.

Shown in his last weeks as Cubs' manager in 1956, later to serve briefly as interim manager of the Cardinals (September, 1958), again by George Heyer in the September, 1956 issue of SPORT.

As an aside, it's fascinating to read, in SPORT and other contemporary publications, of the "hot seat" on which veteran skipper Haney sat in Milwaukee at about the time the magazine published this photo in the late summer of 1956.

He was in his seventh year as a major league manager, at his third stop, and he was a) compiling his first season with a winning record, b) only his second season with a win percentage higher than .390, c) a year away from leading the Braves to a World Series win, and d) about to reel off three consecutive seasons in which Milwaukee had won or tied for the N.L. title at the end of the scheduled campaign (they'd lose a playoff in 1959).

Fred Haney would be fired after that playoff loss and move back to the west coast to serve as General Manager of the new L.A. Angels, and the Braves would never win again in Milwaukee.

Hutchinson had accomplished that rarest of baseball job changes - going from the Detroit Tiger starting rotation to being its manager - and was in his first year managing with the Cardinals when George Heyer captured him for SPORT.

With the exception of the first half of 1959, Hutchinson was a major league manager from the day the Tigers anointed him until spreading cancer caused him to leave the Reds for good on August 12, 1964.

The last manager of the New York Giants went from utility infielder to skipper in just two seasons, and would stay at the helm of a big league club almost continuously through 1972, and make a return to the Giants in 1976.

Not many nine-year skippers had as many ups and downs as did this one-year major league outfielder (1945 A's).

Brought to the Phillies after six largely successful season in the Yankees' farm system, Smith produced two .500 seasons and two just below that mark - in the middle of the last of which the Phils fired him. Within months Smith had another National League club to run - the Reds - and they fired him two weeks shy of the anniversary of his firing in Philly.

He spent the next seven-and-a-half years not managing anywhere. Then in the off-season of 1966-67 the Tigers, who had lost both a manager and an interim manager to illness the year before, reached for Smith. He led them into the extraordinary 1967 A.L. pennant race (they finished 2nd, not the Twins or White Sox) and then a 12-game runaway to take the flag in '68. Taking one of the more remarkable chances in managerial history by moving Mickey Stanley from centerfield to shortstop so he could play him and Willie Horton, Al Kaline, and Jim Northrup at the same time, Smith's Tigers rallied from down 3-1 to upend the defending champion Cardinals.
