Alexandria Aces vs Fort Worth Mustangs

Alexandria won the season series 8 games to 6.

Marty Marion, Jim Presley, Ed Kranepool and Joe DiMaggio all had nice seasons against Fort Worth. Jim Presley hit 4 home runs and drove in 10 against the Mustangs. Joe DiMaggio hit .356 with 3 home runs. Marty Marion has 22 hits against Fort Worth pitching good for a .423 average. On the mound, Mike Minor was 2-0, 2.08 and Jimmy Key was 3-0, 3.00 vs the Mustangs.

Ken Griffey Jr. hit .340 against Alexandria with 3 home runs and 9 RBI. Earl Wilson was 2-0, 3.38.

Let's head to the ballpark to see if Fort Worth can take home their 3rd straight.

Nice team. I always like players like Ed Kranepool, utility man more than anything but an everyday player if needed. Marion is a great defensive SS.Only 3 home runs for Joe Dimaggio? What historical year are you playing in?

Thursday, October 8th 1970 Alexandria vs Fort Worth 7:05pm

Jimmy Key(14-10) vs Earl Wilson(20-5)

Rain, 60 degrees, wind blowing in from center 10mph.

Earl Wilson gave up a back to back singles to Marty Marion and Ed Kranepool in the 1st inning. Jim Presley would hit a deep fly ball to left center. The ball was hit deep enough to allow Marion to move up the 3B. Joe DiMaggio came to the plate. The first pitch to Joe was in the dirt, going all the way to the backstop. Marion scored, 1-0 Alexandria

Jimmy Key got the Aces leadoff hitter Bobby Kielty to pop out to start the game. He then yields singles to Stan Hack and Pete Rose. Up stepped Ken Griffey Jr. Junior wasted no time in depositing the very pitch he seen into the right field seats. 3 run home run. Fort Worth 3-1

The game would remain 3-1 until the bottom of the 6th. Tony Perez would get things started for Fort Worth with a double over 3B. Earl Averill the very next batter would fall behind 0-2. Averill then deposited the next Jimmy Key offering in the left field seats, 417 feet away. 5-2 Fort Worth

After giving up the run in the 1st, Earl Wilson settled down and pitched a great game. He would remain in the game to start the 9th for the Mustangs. Ed Kranepool would reach base on a error by Hal Chase at 1B. Wilson would get Jim Presley to fly out to right field. He would then leave a 1-2 fastball over the center of the plate to Joe DiMaggio. DiMaggio hit it 427 feet for a home run. 5-3 Fort Worth. Wilson was pulled from the game in favor of Tim Crews. Crews wasted no time getting Billy Sample to ground out. He then allowed a single to Dave Watkins. Buddy Blair the next batter up singled past short moving Watkins to 3rd, but Watkins ignored his base coach and headed for home. OUT! Game over Fort Worth wins 5-3

Friday, October 9th 1970 Alexandria vs Fort Worth

Fritz Peterson(15-12) vs Frank Viola(18-10)

Partly cloudy, 56 degrees, wind blowing left to right 12mph.

Ah listen to that sweet music. Frank Viola had the Aces hitters baffled today. Frank held Alexandria scoreless for 8 innings today, before allowing a solo home run to Jim Presley with 2 outs in the 9th. Tim Crews replaced Viola following the home run allowing a DiMaggio single before striking out Dave Watkins to end the game.

The big blow for Fort Worth was a 3 run home run off the bat of Bobby Kielty during a 4 run fourth inning.

Fort worth is now up 2 games as we head to Alexandria Louisiana for game 3.

Sunday October 11th Fort Worth vs Alexandria

Kevin Tapani(18-10) vs Mike Minor(17-11)

Partly cloudy, 49 degrees, wind blowing right to left 10mph

Fort Worth would push across single runs in the top of the 1st, 4th and 5th to go up 3-0 over Alexandria. Meanwhile Kevin Tapani was able to shut the Aces down over the first 4 innings. Buddy Blair singled off Tapani to start the 5th. A passed ball moved Blair to second and a Duke Kenworthy ground out moved him to third. Del Alston then singled driving Blair home. 3-1 Fort Worth

Bottom of the 6th: Marty Marion reaches first on a error by 2B Jack Hannifin. Ed Kranepool was next up and he doubled moving Marion to third. Next to the plate wildcard series MVP Jim Presley. Presley smashed a 1-1 pitch between first and second for a single. Marion scored easily, followed by a close play at the plate...safe. Game tied at 3.

The game would then remain 3-3 until the bottom of the 11th. Tim Crews is now on the mound for Fort Worth. Crew retired Ed Kranepool to start the inning. With one out up stepped Presley. Single to left. DiMaggio flies out to right. Billy Sample is next up. Sample smacked the first pitch to him from Crew into the left center gap. Double. Presley scores Aces Win 4-3. Javy Guerra gets the win. Tim Crews the loss.

Fort Worth leads series 2-1

Monday, October 12th Fort Worth vs Alexandria

Earl Wilson(1-0) vs Jimmy Key(1-1)

Clear skies, 57 degrees, wind blowing out to left 10mph.

Don't mess with Presley. Wow, what a postseason for Jim Presley. Presley hit a 2 run bomb off Earl Wilson to put the Aces up 2-0 after 1.

Fort Worth would push across a run in the top of the 3rd, when Jerry Lumpe doubled off Key. He would move to 3B on a ground out and score on a wild pitch.

Ed Kranepool would hit a 2 out double off Jimmy Key in the bottom of the 5th. Jim Presley would step up to the plate next. He smacked a hard grounder into RF driving in Kranepool.

That would be all the scoring the game would see. Jimmy Key went 7.2 innings, allowing just 2 hits, walking 1 and striking out 8. Key is now 2-1 this postseason 3.18. Jim Presley is hitting .378, 4 home runs 12 RBI.

The series is now tied 2-2

I'm playing 1970. I'm not using a single year. League started in 1947 importing modifiers yearly for historical accuracy.

3 homers for DiMaggio is actually a good sign. I'm using 1 year recalc, so Joe hasn't really recovered from the war years. I love me some 1 year recalc, but sometimes there are casualties. Oh and that was a recap of the season series between the two teams, not the entire season.

Tuesday, October 13th 1970. Fort Worth vs Alexandria

Frank Viola(1-0, 1.04) vs Fritz Peterson(1-1, 2.31)

Clear skies, 53 degrees, wind blowing right to left 9mph

Down 1, the Alexandria Aces exploded in the bottom of the 5th for 8 runs, turning game 5 into a blowout. Dave Watkins and Dell Alston started of the Aces 5th with singles. Buddy Blair then reached base when SS Jerry Lumpe failed to catch a routine popup. Bases loaded. Duke Kenworth would fly out to center deep enough to score Watkins. Billy Sample was up next. Sample singles to left, scoring Alston. Blair moved to third. Marty Marion grounded a ball to third that resulted in Sample being forced out at 2B. Blair scores from third. 3-1 Alexandria. With 2 out and a runner on 1st, up comes Ed Kranepool. Called strike one, ball, ball.....Home run to right field, 401 feet. 5-1 Alexandria. But the Aces aren't done. Jim Presley decided to get into the act with a home run of his own. Also to right, 399 feet. 6-1. Frank Viola would then walk Joe DiMaggio and one has to wonder why he's still out there on the mound. That question really takes shape when the next batter Dave Watkins steps to the plate and smashes a 3-2 pitch over the left field wall for a 2 run blast. 8-1 Alexandria. Watkins had 2 hits in the inning and scored 2 runs.

Both Alexandria and Fort Worth would push across one more run. The game ended 9-2 Alexandria. Alexandria gets the sweep at home. We now take a day off and head back to Fort Worth with Alexandria up 3-2.

In a sidenote Fort Worth catcher Earl Averill had one of those days one can only hope to forget. 5 trips to the plate, 5 strike outs.

Thursday, October 15th 1970 Alexandria vs Fort Worth

Mike Minor(0-1, 3.26) vs Kevin Tapani(0-0, 2.08)

Clear skies, 61 degrees, wind blowing in from center 11mph

The home teams stay perfect as Fort Worth takes game 6, 4-3. Both teams traded runs in the 1st. Jim Presley would reach 1st on another Jerry Lumpe error in the top of the 4th. Joe DiMaggio would follow with a single and Presley would run thru the stop sign reaching 3rd base on close call. Billy Sample would then ground to 1B, forcing DiMaggio at second. Presley scores. The aces would strand Sample at 1st. 2-1 Alexandria.

Bottom of the 4th: Griffey Jr. leads off and strikes out looking. Bobby Kielty singles. Tony Perez then goes down looking as well. 2 down, man on 1st. Hal Chase would then hit a foul ball down the right field line. Billy Sample ranged over to catch it, but had the ball pop out of his glove, e-9. Chase with new life, but down 1-2 in the count, smashes a single to left. Kielty stops at second. Jack Hannifin comes to the plate looks at one up high for ball one and then strokes a double to left. Kielty scores, Chase scores the ball is cutoff holding Jack at second. Jerry Lumpe came to the plate and atoned for his earlier error with a run scoring single. 4-2 Fort Worth

Kevin Tapani got into a groove staying in the game into the 9th inning. Tapani was able to get Jim Presley to swing and miss for the first out in the bottom of the ninth. He then gave up a single to Joe DiMaggio. In comes Tim Crews. Crews would get Billy Sample to hit into a fielders choice forcing DiMaggio at 2nd. Crews would then throw a mistake to Dave Watkins resulting in a double to center. Sample scores and the game is now 4-3 with Buddy Blair coming to the plate. Blair swung at the first pitch lining out to right to end the game.

We now get ready for a game 7.

Friday October 16th 1970 Alexandria vs Forth Worth

Jimmy Key(2-1, 3.18) vs Earl Wilson(1-1, 2.76)

Partly cloudy, 58 degrees, wind blowing in from center 10mph

Holy crap! You can't make this stuff up.

So, Key and Wilson pitched the games of their lives today. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the 4th inning. With one out in the 4th, Ken Griffey Jr. slashed a 0-1 pitch to over the center fielders head for a triple. Tony Perez stepped in and did his job with a deep fly to left, scoring Junior. 1-0 Fort Worth.

The game would remain 1-0 until the top of the ninth. Earl Wilson threw 7.1 innings of scoreless ball, scattering 6 hits, striking out 9, walking 1. With one out in the 8th Marty Marion stroked a single to left. Wilson was yanked from the mound in favor of Tim Crews. Crews was able to get Ed Kranepool to hit into an inning ending double play 6-4-3. We head to the 9th with Fort Worth leading 1-0

The first batter up to lead off the Alexandria 9th is none other than Jim Presley. Presley steps to the dish having already hit 5 home runs in the postseason and has driven in 13 runs. Presley fouls the first Crews offering straight back, 0-1. The second pitch misses the mark, 1-1. Crew's next pitch results in called strike 2. Crews looks in for the sign and deals.....HOME RUN to left, 414 feet. Tie game 1-1.

Fort Worth would put 2 on base in the bottom of the ninth, but couldn't push across a run. We are heading to extra innings.

Tim Crews remained in the game to pitch the 10th. He put the Aces down 1-2-3.

Jesse Crain who came into the game to get the last two outs of the 9th for the Aces remains in the game to pitch the 10th. Eddie Bressoud would greet Crain with a double to left. Crain would then intentionally walk Bobby Kielty. The very next pitch from Crain would drill Earl Averill in the back, loading the bases. Crain would get yanked. Into the game come Javy Guerra. Guerra would get Pete Rose to hit a shallow fly ball to left. Too shallow to score Bressoud. He would then go he-man striking out both Ken Griffey Jr. and Tony Perez to end the inning with the bases loaded. Would this haunt the Mustangs for years....bases loaded, no one out and not able to push across a run?

Tim Crews would once again make easy work of the Aces in the 11th. 1-2-3. If only he could have done so in the 9th, the Mustangs would already be popping the corks.

Javy Guerra returns the favor setting the Mustangs down in order in the bottom of the 11th.

Tim Crews starts the 12th off by walking Joe DiMaggio on 4 straight pitches. Blaine Boyer comes into the game to relieve Crews. Boyer would get Billy Sample to ground into a fielders choice. Dave Watkins to strikeout and after Sample steals second, Buddy Blair hit a ground ball back to the pitcher for out number 3

Javy Guerra remains in the game for the Aces. He gets the first to hitters out on routine ground outs. Earl Averill singled off Guerra and forcing the Aces hand. Jon Coutlangus enters the game to face Pete Rose. Ball, ball, called strike, foul, foul, ground ball to 1B. Kranepool makes the play unassisted. On to the 13th

Blaine Boyer puts the Aces down in order in the top of the 13th All ground outs.

Coutlangus allows a leadoff single to Ken Griffey Jr. to start the bottom of the 13th. But the rally ends instantly when Perez hits a 2-1 pitch hard to short resulting in a 6-4-3 double play. Hal Chase would go down swinging to end the inning.

Boyer remains in the game for Fort Worth. Boyer gets Kranepool to fly out to left, Presley to strikeout looking, before walking Joe DiMaggio. Boyer then got a ground ball out off the bat of Billy Sample to end the inning. We head to the bottom of the 14th.

Alexandria leave Jon Coutlangus in the game. Jack Hannifin greets Jon with a single to left to leadoff the inning. Coutlangus then whiffs Ben Sankey swinging and does the same to Ben Bressoud. Bobby Kielty pops out to short to end the inning.

Fort Worth goes with Blain Boyer to start the 15th. Boyer throws just 2 pitches to retire the first two batters, Dave Watkins and Buddy Blair. He then walks Bud Thomas. Boyer is relieved, in comes rookie Max Lanier. The first batter to face Lanier is Dell Alston. Alston bloops the second pitch he sees from Lanier in front of Ken Griffey Jr. moving Thomas to 3rd base. 1st and 3rd two outs, in steps Marty Marion. Called strike, ball, ball, foul ball, foul ball, foul ball, ball, 3-2 and the payoff results in a routine pop fly to the SS. On to the bottom of the 15th

Alexandria sticks with Coutlangus to start the inning, but he's showing exhausted, so you have to imagine he's on a short leash. Jon quickly dismisses Earl Averill by getting him to hit a routine grounder to short. Out come the Aces manager and he waves to the bullpen calling for Goose Gossage to enter the game. The 38 year old Gossage wasn't used often during the regular season. He pitched in 12 games, 17.1 innings and is 2-0, 3.63. Up steps Pete Rose. Goose reaches back into his youth on a 3-2 pitch to Rose, blowing it by him for strike three. He then gets Ken Griffey to ground one back to him for out number 3.

Max Lanier remains in the game to pitch the 16th for Fort Worth. The first batter he faces Ed Kranepool hits the second pitch he sees to second for the first out. Jim Presley hits the first pitch to him into left field for a single. Lanier then walks Joe DiMaggio to put runners on first and second. Billy Samples comes to the plate with a chance to be the hero. He works the count to 3-1 before hitting a sharp grounder straight to 2B. 4-6-3 inning over.

The bottom of the 16th, can you believe this? Gossage remains on the mound for the Aces. Tony Perez steps to the plate and strokes a 3-2 pitch over the CF's head for a double. The Aces then intentionally walk Hal Chase. Jack Hannifin steps in and tries to bunt, the runners over but fouls off his first attempt. His second try proves successful. Runners on 2nd and 3rd, one out. Again the Aces use the intentional walk sending Ben Sankey to first. Bases loaded. Gossage now faces Eddie Bressoud with the Championship on the line. Remember the Mustangs had this same situation way back in the bottom of the 10th and failed to score. After a visit to the mound by the Aces manager, Gossage looks in for the sign. The first pitch to Bressoud, is a called strike, 0-1. The second pitch misses the mark badly, 1-1. The Fort Worth Crowd is going ballistic. Gossage toes the rubber takes the sign, delivers, high and inside, 2-1. The Aces catcher Dave Watkins takes a couple steps toward Gossage, motioning for him to get the ball down. Goose glares back at him. He once again takes the sign and goes into motion. This time the pitch is low, almost getting by Watkins, ball 3. The count is now 3-1 and I'm guessing the Fort Worth crowd can be hear in Longview. Bressoud looks to the third base coach, I'm guessing he's taking all the way, but who knows. Gossage snorts, spits, and delivers. Ball Four. The Mustangs are one again Southern League champs Three years in a row. The first team ever to do so in league history.. Rookie pitcher Max Lanier was the winning pitcher. Goose Gossage took the loss.

Series MVP goes to Pete Rose 13-31, .419. I was anxious to see if the MVP honors would go to Jim Presley even though his team came up short. Presley had 4 home runs in the series and drove in 8 runs. One has to wonder though if MVP honors should have went Earl Wilsons way. He was 1-1, but over 23.2 innings he was pretty impressive. Rose took a 0-7 collar in game 7, so his .419 average is pretty impressive..

Offseason News.

Shreveport signs Scott Kazmir to a 2 year $48,200 deal. Kazmir hasn't pitched since 1968. He was an unsigned free agent for all of 1970.

Fort Worth gave Frank Viola a 7 year $518,000 contract, keeping the 8 year vet in town. Viola has 111 wins against 70 losses with a 3.01 ERA

Jackson signs Bill Melton to a 6 year $360,200 deal. Melton has a .270 career average with 107 Home Runs. Melton took home MVP honors in 1969 belting 40 bombs driving in 134 runs and hitting .326. He fell off to just 16 home runs last season and only hit .253.

Shreveport keeps Jack Shepard in town for one more season signing him to a $19,800 contract

Alexandria signed Veteran pitcher to a $31,800 one year deal. French is 36 years old, 207 wins, 167 defeats. He has an excellent 2.83 career ERA. Not sure how much Larry still has in the tank, but we'll see.

Oh WOW, we have a trade. The Beaumont Crush just shipped 19 year old Willie Horton(lf) and 25 year old Chris Herrmann to the Birmingham Slammers for 25 year old right fielder Paul Dade. I'm speechless and biased, but wow did Beaumont just get fleeced. WOW!

Biloxi signs 30 year old third baseman Bill Spiers to a 4 year $122,600 deal. Spiers is a career .247 hitter with 284 RBI, 304 Runs.

Mobile holds onto Van Mungo, signing him to a 2 year extension $52,000. I love this one. The Southern League wins leader pitched his first 9 seasons with Mobile, before stints in Lake Charles and Shreveport totaling 6 season. He then returned to Mobile in 1968.

Corpus Christi signed 34 year old Richie Ashburn to a 19,200 1 year deal. Richie is a career .284 hitter with 1727 hits. He's scored a total of 763 runs during his career. Ashburn is a 7 time Gold Glove winner.

Lake Charles signs 29 year old Dmitri Young to a 3 year $46,466 deal. Young has hit .274, with 71 home runs over 8 Southern League season all with Beaumont.

Ugh!!!! Ugh! Ugh!

The Hall of Fame votes are in and I'm sad to report no one got inducted.

Yasiel Puig received 74.5%, 5.5 shy of the required 80%. The career .305 hitter, with 298 home runs, 414 doubles, 142 triples and a career .388OBP is getting in, even if I have to do it myself. He will make it though Puig JAWS 50.8, Black Ink 33, Gray Ink 137, HOF Standards 54
HOF Monitor 129

Hanley Ramirez received 20.8% in his first year on the ballot. Ramirez remains the career leader in doubles with 482. At the age of 23/24 Hanley looked like a sure bet for the Hall, but he then became human again. Still had a nice career though. 1947 Rookie of the Year, 1948 League MVP. 3 Silver Slugger awards. JAWS 43.5, Black Ink 17, Gray Ink 99, HOF Standards 37, HOF Monitor 86

Players dropped from the ballot. Jim Rice 3.5%. Wade Davis 2.0

As the new season arrives we received some sad news today Moe Drabowsky's career is over. Moe tore his labrum last season and he just isn't going to be able to return Drabowsky is 26 years old. Over 7 Southern League seasons Moe compiled a 59-65 record with 6 saves and a 3.56 ERA. He pitched the majority of his career with Beaumont, 6 years. He then signed with Jackson. He pitched in 28 games for Jackson last season before suffering his injury.

Preseason Predictions:

The prognosticators have picked none other than the Fort Worth Mustangs to win the regular season title. If this come true, it will be the Mustangs 4th in a row. The Mustangs are predicted to win 90 games

Picked to finish second, the Lake Charles Pirates. The crystal ball says the Pirates will win 88 games.

Picked 3rd, the Biloxi Cardinals. Biloxi is predicted to win 83 games, one more than the Shreveport Captains.

Based on the predictions, it looks like 1971 may be another pitching year. Home runs look down and so do the earned run averages.
