Cannot get rid of nicknames
No matter what I try, and I've searched high and low and tried strategies like "starting from a quickstart or template," but every single time that first draft class generates, I get stupid nicknames.
Of course, I already wiped clean (and saved) the nicknames.txt What gives? I used to be able to get this in OOTP 12. |

Clearing out the nicknames.txt file works for me. What kind of league are you doing? How is it setup?

You know, this is a good idea, to get rid of the nicknames.
No idea how to deal with the problem you're having, though. Is the text file in a central location, and used for all leagues, or is it copied to the league folder each time you start a league? Also, be sure to close out of the game and restart it, after deleting the nicknames.txt file.

I like the nicknames. *shrug*
Though I do sometimes have to edit them and change them to something else. Like if a guy's name is Josh Schneider I'm not going to let him have the nickname "Big Pete". |

It would be nice to have a setting for nicknames in the game set-up -- either an on-off button or a setting (like the one for foreign players) that gives the user a 0-100 range for the use of nicknames.

Yep, same thing just happened to me again. Totally blank nicknames file and I get the worst nicknames for rookies. So lame.

Markus needs to fix this, and one of you need to file a bug report.

One thing one can do to get rid of nicknames is to export the roster and make a copy of it just in case. Load the original in a spreadsheet, scroll down to the row that has the Column headings and delete the contents of all cells under the Nickname Cell (Do Not delete the whole column or column heading). Save and Re-import. voila ...in about 30 seconds, no nicknames.
Or, change them, add them, delete them individually. Last edited by Bigrod; 12-01-2012 at 07:11 AM. |

I finally got the modern names to work for me after trial and error but funny thing is, even after creating a league from scratch, the nicknames still showed up even though the file is deleted...
I should mention that I imported the End of the season QuickStart into my save as a template. That may have been why.. -Juke |

I really wish the nicknames would just be removed from the game. I could never stand them.

I made a suggestion that a nickname on/off switch be added to 14. This idea should in theory be acceptable to everyone.

But I do recall running into this problem a few years ago....and it was after a patch I think where nicknames showed up in my league again and I had a hellish time getting rid of them. Which I guess brings up another thing....the patches, they always seem to go to far and rewrite too many files. I always have to keep in mind to go back and restore the files that I have edited...and some I really don't understand why the patcher cares about, like the finances file. Throw the nickname file in there as well I suppose, though in v13 I have had no issue on getting rid of the nicknames and keeping those wretched things out of my league.

The other annoying thing is, when you get rid of nicknames, then add them individually for players and the game then decides that EVERYONE needs those 3 or 4 nicknames and then you're stuck deleting them.
I agree with an on/off switch for nicknames or a way to get rid of them fast.

But yeah, on/off switch, as I'm sure we all agree. |

Why? It isn't baseball but in the NHL a few years back, Keith Tkachuk was nicknamed "Big Walt". It looks weird, but I'm sure it isn't the first time it's happened. haha
