From the Sept 1891 issue of Mitt Slingers Magazine...Hank Griffin drops from sight with his loss to Thompson...Jack O'Brien is warned by the IBU that he can advance no further in their rankings fighting only six round bouts...George Chuvalo is ranked above Peter Jackson but Jackson is already set to fight Corbett for the title...Tom Sharkey rises from No 8 to No 5 while George Godfrey drops from No 5 to No 9...John L Sullivan is recovering from his beating by Jimmy Bivins while his manager scrambles to make a match that will revive his fortunes...Fight promoters use the IBU's rankings to gauge what a fighter is worth at the box office...Having consulted with boxers, former fighters, managers and promoters, the IBU dictates what the cuts for purses should be with fighters in the top five commanding the largest percentage, those in the bottom five commanding somewhat less, the remaining 10 receiving less than the bottom five of the top 10, and the others left to the mercy of fight promoters...IBU dictates stipulate that no manager may take more than 20% of a fighter's purse and at least 5% of every purse must be banked in trust as a pension...

Maritime Telegraph Service report carried by Canadian dailies...Referee Hiram Cook used the IBU's round system and scored 7 rounds Jackson, 6 rounds Corbett with two rounds, the 6th and 10th even...Jackson was warned once for holding and hitting, but Corbett's seconds complained he was doing this throughout the match...Cook replied that he could have disqualified Corbett for his constant holding...Corbett's best rounds were the 8th and 14th when he had Jackson covering on the ropes...Jackson came closest to putting Corbett down in the 4th round when he landed several hard blows to the ribs and a looping right on the jaw...It was an overflow SRO crowd who paid some $15,000, 10% of which was divided between the fighters...A purse of $20,000 was split 65% to the winner and 35% to the loser...Jackson says he'll be ready to defend his laurels in two or three months time.

Maher was not a distance fighter. He was KO or get KO'd. He was beating up Kilrain in every round and just ran out of petrol. I was expecting him to win but he couldn't get the job done. After huge effort in round 5 (when I thought the ref would stop it) he was spent.

From the Evening edition of the Coaltown Gazette...The likely New England pugilist to share the top of the bill on the next Coaltown boxing card is Jim Duncan, heavyweight, a native of Bangor, Maine. He is 3-1-1 in his previous five bouts and is currently considered one of the best heavyweights in the New England area. Duncan stands an even six feet tall and generally fights at between 180 and 190 pounds though he has weighed as little as 178...He will likely face John "Sandy" Ferguson..

From the Chicago Tribune....Fred Russell, now a Denver resident, withstood a pounding from Joe Kennedy in the first round and several terrific blows in the second before rushing the Californian into the ropes and smashing him to the ribs...the end came from a wild haymaker of a right that fans thought nearly took the champion's head off and deposited him in a heap halfway out of the ring where he was counted out and carried away by his seconds...So Russell has his 8th straight victory and is the new Pacific Northwest heavyweight champion...
