I'm actually disappointed in the poll results. Before looking at them and reading the thread, I totally thought elimination number would be winning by a landslide. I understand some people are so traditional thinking that they don't care about utility gains, but I like to think most of us are better than that.

My hope is that most people who voted for magic number didn't realize that there's such a substantial difference and just voted for the term that sounded better or is more familiar to them. I could see doing that myself. There was a time when I didn't even know that elimination number was a thing.

You don't need both. Having both is superfluous. The elimination number for the second-place club is the magic number for the first-place club.

I get the impression some folks aren't understanding what elimination number is.

Probably a poorly-worded poll.

Somehow I missed your point. After rereading I see that this is exactly what you were talking about.

If you can't ask the right question don't whine about the wrong results.

I disagree. My question was plain as day:

WHICH WOULD YOU RATHER SEE?

1. Elimination Number
2. Magic Number

Also, I had a fairly lengthy first post that described what I was talking about. I can't help if people don't know the difference between magic number or elimination number. I never even considered that I'd have to spell it out.

Someone could have taken your question literally. Of course we'd all rather "see" a magic number instead of an elimination number as the former implies your team is in first while the latter implies your team is behind and needs to catch up or they'll be eliminated.

Magic # > Elimination #

The people have spoken

*edit: let me add more of my thoughts.

I tend to be in the playoff picture, so maybe I just have more experience with paying attention to my magic number. I'm not anti-elimination #, and the idea of putting both in the same column is tempting, unless if that just makes it look too confusing (plus we need to figure out what to name the column)

Oh no, not you too!

Name it: P# (Playoff Number)

edit: Or just call it the magic number and treat it like the elimination number.

Now, if that is not a Central Florida picture! My dogs do the same thing! But they also believe in the magic of the number!

Why not a click box in the league setting that allow the user to choose which to call it?

Magic numbers are elitist.

Again, you do not need both magic number and elimination number. The elimination number for the second-place team is the magic number for the first-place team. (Why oh why aren't folks getting this?!?)

So 65% of OOTP players prefer the Magic Number...wait, what?

So then what's the elimination number for the first-place team and the magic number for the second-place team? (Sorry, I actually understand it all and was just trying to make your head explode.)
