Will buying on Steam prevent me from joining online leagues?

I'm going to buy OOTP 15, and I want to eventually be part of an online league. However, I know that online leagues require all members to have the same version. Meanwhile, Steam auto-updates as soon as a patch is released. Will this prevent me from taking part in most online leagues? If so, is there any workaround or alternative? I really don't want to be limited to two copies, as my computers are fairly old and will almost certainly need to be upgraded and/or replaced in the near future.

No
Steam does not handle the multi player part of the game. The game itself no matter who you buy from creates the GM file. Your online league will have FTP information already included and your GM file will be sent once you export.
As far as versions, the Steam version has been updated within 72 hours of the version purchased elsewhere.
Most online leagues will wait until everyone is on the same version before proceeding. If all else fails, you can communicate with your online league commissioner and tell him/her about what changes you want made and they can do it manually.

And lastly, yes you get two licenses. But you can use these licenses as many times as you wish, provided you unlicense first before activating another license.
If you are upgrading PCs, then first unlicense from the PC you no longer plan on using and then re install on the new PC.

Thanks, this is all very helpful! I misunderstood how the licenses worked, so I'll just buy it directly from the website.

Also, if you are unsure you want to have the latest patch, this advice was giving to me:

'...

If you right click on the game in your steam library and click on "properties", then go to the "updates" tab, there's an option that says "always keep this game up to date", you can chance that (via a drop down) to "do not automatically update this game".
