SP Alix Billiard

Alix Billiard, mentioned previously this season, continues to draw attention to his masterful pitching results. He's becoming one of those 'automatic win' type pitchers, the guys who can dominate any team and usually find a way to earn the W.

The FBL is more a pitchers league than a hitters so there is no shortage of names that enter the conversation when pitching is discussed. Billiard, who leads the league in wins with 7, and has logged the most innings, is combining top notch stuff with his 5 pitches while limiting opponents to just 1.3 walks per game. His 0.86 WHIP is testament to his dominance, so far.

Nice is hanging right with Paris as the two teams are tied for the most wins in the FBL with 21-13 records.

Le Diamant at Paris

Le Diamant came to France without the usual hype of being the bully on the block. We've witnessed an erosion of talent over the past 3 years in part because of the defections of Mercier and Michel who migrated to Paris by way of free agency. But, any time Henri and and Delage go up against the Le Diamant team it garners attention.

Paris had Julien Henri on the hill for the final game of the set. As it turned out the teams had each one a game apiece so Julien's start would decide who took the series.

Henri started out a bit rough striking out in his first AB, allowing a solo shot to SS Habib Vial in the second inning, and then banging into a twin killing in the 4th to stymie a rally. However, after Lamy walked Delage dialed long distance with a 2 run blast and the Artists were on their way.

Credit Herve with jump starting a team that was starting to look lifeless. His homer ignited the offense and lit a fire under Julien Henri. So much so, that Henri didn't allow another hit until the 8th inning.

With the win today, and the loss for the Orchids, Nice and Paris are still tied for the best record in the FBL.

Ottawa Series

First off, Herve Delage has upped his batting game this season giving the Artists some punch after Lamy. Actually, the catcher Johann Girard has kept step with Herve leaving only a weak bat at SS and whenever the top 3 outfielders get a day off. In fairness to Nao Yamada, he's just 23 and will require some experience before he reaches his potential.

The Expedition are up next. They have experienced only one losing season since 1962. The always dangerous Xavier Rolland continues to terrorize FBL pitchers. But, just like last season, he is off to another slow start. He's a legit 5 tool player who comes to play every game.

Julien Henri will not pitch in this series.

More Herve Delage

The FBL is amassing history and with each year today's stars get closer and closer to retirement age. Delage, at 33, has 3 more years on a lucrative contract and plans on playing to at least 36. At the same time, he'll have to produce to stay a regular which he as always been, whether it be the hot corner or second base. His infield versatility has always been a strength of the Martiniquais born in Le Tampon, Martinique.

Herve's third year card is, of course, in the Le Diamant colors of blue and blue green. He was always a few seasons ahead of Henri but the two formed a friendship early on that has remained in tact to this day.

Artists @ Ottawa Expedition

A pair of teams in tight pennant races in their respective leagues squared off in Ottawa for three games. The Snake Eyes are chasing the Expedition while the Nice Orchids and Paris Artists are matching each other for the best record in the French Baseball League.

Game one featured a balanced attack as the Artists had 8 players with at least one hit and the Expedition had 7. But, it was Nao Yamada who entered the game batting .195 who provided the spark with 3 singles and a swipe of second base earning him POG honors. Sam Smith got the win elevating him to 4-1.

In the middle game it was an explosion of hits in the 5th inning including homers by Xavier Rolland (he kills Paris) and Tim Oulton leading the way to a 7 spot on the board for the Expedition. Five RBI's for Xavier was too much for the Artists as they fell 10-5 in spite of 13 of their own base knocks.

The final game of the set had seldom used Pascal Blanchet in the OF for Julien Henri who looked lethargic at the plate the game before. The benching proved to be key to the win as Blanchets three run homer in the top of the 6th put it out of reach for Ottawa. Laurant Mercier, the quintessential pro player had a 4 for 4 day. Dave Coronado with the win is now 7-2 for Paris.

The Artists, with 24 wins, have at least two more than every other team and now lead the Orchids by two games in the competitive France league. The Marseille Soleis, riding a 3 game win streak (a sweep of Le Morne Rouge in Martinique), are two behind Nice.

Vic Cosman

Here we have Vic, with an updated photo showcasing the new Le Diamant home uniform, at the age of 36. He's been one of my favorite players to follow. A life long Diamond playing in Martinique he was definitely the ace of the staff even while Henri was on the team.

He's not going to be around forever so lets give him a little bit of love while he is still pitching.

Oddly, player of the week award, once. Player of the Month award, 5 times. Player of the Year award, 4 times. Championship winner, 4 times.

Regarding lifetime status, his .690 winning percentage is tops in the FBL. His 1.1 BB/9 IP is tops in the league. His opponents .261 OBP is tops in the league, too.

Vic holds the season record in the FBL is seven different categories. He has even hit three home runs while batting.

The graphic below indicates the extent of his red ink. He'll remain an all time great in this league and a sure HOF inductee.

Sting Rays travel to Paris

Anse d'Arlet, the town just west of Le Diamant in Martinique, travels to Paris to take on another first place team.

The Sting Rays are not accustomed to being near the top of the Martinique standings as that has always been reserved for Le Diamant and Cap Chevalier. But, the winds are changing direction on the French island and the Sting Rays are parlaying good pitching and defense into a run for the Martinique pennant.

In 1962 and 1963, just prior to the Le Diamant dynasty, it was Anse d'Arlet who won the league championship. Hard times have fallen on the village area in the bay until recently.

The upcoming series is a test to see if Anse d'Arlet can match up against the best team in the league, the champs, Paris Artists. Sebastian Vincent will be the pitcher in the 3rd game of the series. Fortunately, for the Artists, they will not have to face #2 SP Richard Maze, 3-0 with 1.10 ERA.

Sting Rays at Artists Series

Anse d'Arlet outscored Paris in the three game set but it was the Artists who came away with the two games to one advantage. For the Sting Rays they lost a tough opener 1-0 in 10 innings in spite of out hitting the Artists seven to three. Seldom used Josh Abbott lofted a SF in the 10th for his 2nd rbi of the season making a winner of Thomas Dupin (1-0). The Sting Rays out hit the Artists in all three games. A tough break, yet the team still owns a 4 game lead in Martinique.

The middle game was a close contest until the Sting Rays broke it wide open in the 8th with 4 runs, most of them after two were out. Julien Henri took another loss (2-6) after going 8 innings. SP Coleman MaClean was practically unhittable until gave up a 2 run homer to Michel in the 9th. By then it didn't matter as MacLean is now 2-6 with a 3.64 ERA/ 3.56 FIP.

The Artists hung on to win the final game getting two stellar innings of relief from Ochoa and Gallet. They preserved the win for Sam Smith.

Julien has had mixed results on the mound and is the only starter with a losing record. He's also scuffling at the dish with an 0 for 12 streak going. Said, Henri, "I am not concerned. We're winning games, we have the best record, and all ball players go through streaks, good and bad. It's a long season and I'll try and relax and not force it next game. But, hey, we're playing pretty good ball, don't you think?"

The maturity in Henri is certainly one of the intangibles that allow him to set the example for younger players. "He knows how to steady the ship, that is for sure", quipped his bench coach Joel Meyer.

In other news Nice is falling further behind Paris and is now tied with Marseille for second place, Losing 7 in a row can do that to your team.

Montreal visits Paris

The Royals are next up on the schedule for the Artists (Scouting Report below). 1964 was the year Montreal won their only championship. They were led by the ubiquitous 'Steve Green' who led the team with a 5.8 WAR.

These days it's Antonio Balbuena who is trailblazing the Royals to victories. His 8-1 record is an indication just how tough it is to come away with a W when you are facing the right hander who commands five pitches. As noted in the scouting report Paris will face him in the middle game of the series.

Elsewhere in the FBL, the Quebec Snake Eyes are capturing the attention of the fans. Having won 11 of 12 and 7 in a row has put them into contention for the most wins in the league. They are extremely tough in their own ballpark with a 17-7 record.

For Paris they will continue to count on Michel and Mercier to lead the offense as they rank first and third in the batting crown race. 25 year old Roger Lamy flies under the radar because of the Artist star power but he is gradually becoming a big stick in the Artist arsenal, putting up some potent offensive numbers, .295/.358/.452.

FBL Spotlight - Philippe Hamon

One of the benefits to the Inbox of OOTP is getting tidbits of information about the league. Who weighs the most, who's been injured, and who is making the most money.

From the latter category came the prompt for Philippe Hamon, 38 year old infielder for the Quebec Snake Eyes. Hamon's $230,000 yearly salary is tied for 3rd in the league with Saint Michel's Gerald Ferry. A 4 time GG award winner, 3 time Platinum Stick winner, 1965 World Series winner, and the 1966 MVP Award winner Philippe has earned his acclaim. Tack on hitting for the cycle in 1964 and his resume looks even deeper.

With his baseball skills seemingly in decline Hamon has been relegated to the 3rd string at the second base position. Essentially, it means he makes a few pinch hitting appearances while starting just 2 games all season.

The locally and nationally very popular player is yet to speak out on his current role but it's known that he is angry about it. His career 62.1 WAR certainly puts him in the running for HOF induction.

It will be interesting to see what Hamon will do the final 2/3 of the season for the current first place Snake Eyes. Will there be an injury that offers up more playing time? Will he get a quality AB in the post-season? All questions to be answered in what is surely the final season of a very good player who helped put the FBL on the map.

Royals hit a wall in Paris

The Artists showcased all of their skills the past three days to roll to a relatively comfortable sweep of the Montreal Royals. They hit well, pitched very well, and flashed GG level skills in the field while playing error less baseball even turning three twin killings in the final contest.

Montreal is no doubt happy to be out of Paris and away from Laurant Mercier who tore through their pitching staff like it was batting practice. Mercier. He had 7 hits a double, two walks, three home runs, scored six, and batted in six. He does this while playing out of position at third base as the team attempts to compensate for the shortcomings of former first round draft pick Bruno Proust (.180/.261/.180).

Even the strong arm of Antonio Balbuena was neutralized in his 8 inning CG effort. Paris won that game 4-1 dropping the pitcher who was leading the league in wins to 8-2 for the season.

23.2 IP is the number that Paris received from the starters during the series as 16 hits were all the Royals could manage. Montreal will continue their road trip in Martinique as they will face Cap Chevalier the team with the worst record in the FBL.

Julien Henri was the POG in the opener as he singled, doubled, and homered batting in three runs. He sat out the final game of the series in preparation for his start the next day.

The Snake Eyes

The Quebec Snake Eyes have won 8 of 10 and are now tied with the Ottawa Expedition for first place in the Canada League. The 26-19 records are only second (and third) to Paris Artists who check into the series with a FBL best 29-16 record. In addition, the Artist have the leagues best run differential at +68. In the first meeting Paris swept the Snake Eyes in Paris.

25 year old Fares Pere is leading the offensive charge for Quebec. Coming of his rookie year of .221/.307/.408 Pere is slashing at a .310/.361/.540 line. His 11 homers lead the team.

The opener will be a tough one for Julio Gomez, the #5 SP in the Quebec rotation. He'll face Julien Henri, but it is Gomez with the 0.99 ERA who is coming off 22 IP of allowing just 2 runs. So, the favorite might be a toss up.

The home run power edge is owned by Quebec as they lead the league. If the game is close at the end keep in mind that the Artists Gallet has a microscopic ERA of 0.44. With a 3-0, 8 save record Gerard Gallet is paying big dividends on his F.A. contract signed in the off-season. Gallet's numbers are so incredible that I'll save them for another post. He's money at the back end of that bullpen.

The Quebec Snake Eyes Series

Call it a three day pitching clinic because that's what it was. The Paris Artists traveled to Canada to take on the team that leads the Canadian League (tied with Ottawa) and leads all of the FBL in home runs.

By the time that the Artists headed to the train station for their trip to St. Michel the fans in Quebec were wondering just how did it happen. The Artists SP's were named player of the game each game. Julien Henri, the only pitcher to not pitch a complete game (8 innings), added offense to his effort going 3 for 5 with 2 runs batted in from the lead off position. We have not seen Henri in the one spot in a number of years but he made the bench coach look like a genius.

Laurant Mercier, given the day off for the final game of the set, continues to terrorize FBL pitchers as picked up 3 hits in 6 AB's including a home run. In one of the few outs that Laurant made in game 2, a ground ball double play, still scored Michel from third base for the games only run.

In the final game it was Lamy driving a ball to left centerfield wall that scored speedster Nao Yamada all the way from first base.

Paris has won 7 in a row and now have a .667 winning percentage.

St. Michel at Paris

The Nobels came to town playing .500 ball (24-24) in the hotly contested Canadian League where all 4 teams are bunched with 2 games. For the home team they are winning 2 out of 3 this season.

Paris continued their hot streak by taking the first and third games of the series. The final game of the set was an 8 inning effort by Julien Henri. Henri, with the most losses and the highest ERA on the team gave the Artists 8 solid innings. He gave up 2 walks and fanned 9 and picked up his 4th W against 6 losses.

Laurant Mercier made sure that Paris got out early as he blasted a 2 run homer in the bottom of the first.

Paris at Nice

The Artists traveled to the southern most part of the island to visit the Nice Orchids. Amid the Mediterranean vista, the teams played three games.

The Orchids stormed out to a two games to zero advantage when Fares Haas doubled in the winning run in the 10th inning giving Nice the 3-2 win. Having won the opener 7-2 behind Alix Billard (7-2) the Orchids closed the gap to 4 games, the smallest margin in some time.

The final game was essentially decided when Johan Girard lines his second dinger of the year into the right field seats scoring Herve Delage. The Artists won it 4-1 when Gerard Gallet retired the side in order. Gallet, the free agent signee from Cap Chevalier, has allowed 1 run in 24 innings! His WHIP is 0.58. It was 8 games ago that he allowed his last hit. None of his outings have been less than a full inning.

Julien Henri Season

Paris is currently in a 3 game series with Giverney. Henri has just finished pitching in an 8-4 Artist victory. All 4 runs were with 2 out and Julien lasted 8 innings.

At 28 years of age Julien should be entering his prime years in terms of athletic abilities. Of course, that doesn't mean that he will perform better (or worse) than earlier in his career.

Curiously, his batting stats are very close to the previous year. He's upped his OBP and SLG marginally in each category. The largest variance is SB's as he has only been successful 2/6.

On the mound the first take is he is having a much worse season than we are accustomed to seeing. After going 18-7 to lead the league in wins last year, he's just 5-6. Yet, a few things stand out:
  • His WHIP of 0.98 is exactly the same as last year
His BB/IP is actually a bit less
    His K/IP is the same
Last season his BABIP of .245 was a career low that no doubt contributed to the W/L record.

We'll check in on Julien later in the year to see how the rest of the season goes for him.

Giverney at Paris

The 21-34 Herons travel to Paris to take on the 36-19 Artists.

Game 1 Brun 5-5 vs Merlin 4-4

Extra innings before the Artists walk it off courtesy of Johan Girards third dinger of the season. Otto Gaudreau, 28 year old call up from AAA, gets his first win. Merlin didn't allow any runs in 7 IP but Dupin coughed up 2 runs in the 9th that sent it to extra's.

Game 2 LeGrand 3-4 vs Henri 4-6

Julien goes 8 innings scattering 10 hits and a walk which is good enough when your bats give you 13 hits, 2 walks, and a homer. The Artists win it as they double up the Herons, 8-4. Mercier, who seemingly can't be stopped, homers and bats in 4.

Game 3 Lepine 2-6 vs Smith 6-2

The Artists out hit the Herons 10-3 as they cruised to a series sweep by the score of 5-1. CF, Julien Henri, went 2 for 5 with an RBI and a swipe. Sam Smith goes to 7-2 as he didn't allow any earned runs. Sam, featured in his throwback AAA uniform, is keeping the ball in the yard which has helped him become a successful SP. His microscopic .2/9 IP ratio has pitching coach Christophe Martin singing his praise for the right hander.
