Guidelines for setting bullpen roles and usage options

For someone just starting out, what guidelines or "rules of thumb" should I use when assigning roles and usage options for your bullpen? Some are more obvious than others, but I find myself clueless on what I should be looking for in a pitcher when assigning a role.

For example, what makes a pitcher a good closer, vs a good setup man, vs a good middle reliever? Are there specific ratings or stats to look for when setting high leverage vs avoid high leverage, or use more often vs use less often?

I've taken my best guesses below, but I am likely waaay off, so please correct me.
  • Long Relief - High Stamina?
  • Emergency SP - High Stamina and 3-4+ pitches?
  • Specialist - Not really sure. Would you just use a weaker pitcher that has higher stats vs LHB? Would this just limit their innings to a single batter?
  • Setup - No clue, other than just picking your two best pitchers
  • Closer - No clue, other than just picking the pitcher that is already assigned as the closer
  • High Leverage- High Control to avoid walks?
  • Avoid High Leverage- Best guess would be newer or weaker pitchers. Or ones that are just doing bad.
  • Use More Often- Middle Reliever with highest stamina?
  • Use Less Often- No idea... other than just assigning it to pitchers you don't like hah

Any help would be appreciated. I feel like I am doing something wrong here, since my starters seem to do well, and then my bull pen just lets in a bunch of runs.

Thank you.

I will comment on a few of these...
1. For my closer I pick my highest "stuff" reliever and hopefully he also has decent control(and with good stats...not just ratings).
2. Setup is like closer and usually my 8th inning setup is like closer #2...High stuff good stats.
3. For specialists I look for relievers that have done particularly well against either right or left handers and assign them as specialist. Really I do not always play a specialist and when I do it is generally someone to play against lefties.
4. For emergency pitcher and long relief I do the same as you.

1. A high stamina pitcher would be good here, 60+ stamina should be fine it's better if he has 3+ pitches because the played will catch on as the game goes on.
2. I almost never use Emergency SP as they are rarely used correctly, I would put them at long reliever, if I had to choose it would be your 6th starter who isn't good enough to start but can relive.
3. Specialists are always lefties for me, usually any old lefty will do and he should do fine, if you want to get technical you want a lefty with dominant lefty splits. And yes it will limit their innings to usually 1 batter
4. I use the one two punch set up method (7th inning then 8th inning guy) but a regular 8th inning man will do, you want a guy who has good control so he doesn't blow the hold. stuff, for me, can be low as long as he gets guys out effectively. I also cycle my 7th inning guy for other guys from the bullpen, but keep my 8th inning man the same.
5. Closer depends on your style of play, the most useful are high stuff guys, or control guys. I go high stuff just because they are more efficient in getting outs. Control guys are nice but I prefer them to be in the set up. Also have your closer be a ground ball pitcher
6. High leverage is always good control no questions
7. Low leverage is new guys/guys with bad control
