Post Toronto Blue Jays Historical Replay

I decided to take the plunge and do a Toronto Blue Jays historical replay.

The first step I did is to start in the 1976 season unemployed so I can participate in the 1977 Expansion draft as the Blue Jays GM. The 1976 season had the NYY defeat the NYM in the subway series. NYY defeated the Angels in the AL Champ and NYM defeated the Reds in the NL Champ.

Listed below is the Expansion draft results for my Blue Jays. Each team was able to protect 15 players and no more than 3 player per team could be lost. I realize this is a bit different than in real life where only AL teams were involved in the expansion draft and there were 3 pull backs by each team in R1/R2 - OOTP doesn't allow the pull back option. That is the nice thing about OOTP I can decide what I wish to do!

I went into this expansion draft thinking hmmm I am going to build a young team but, then I couldn't believe nor resist taking the ALLTIME hit king with the #1 pick in the draft. So within minutes my whole mind set changed from building a young team / future winner to lets see who else I can drum up to compete sooner than later :-)

I'm not to happy with my assigned coaches/scout/trainer but they will have to do for now as I am low in funds.

I really wanted to take a shot at SP J.R. Richard in free agency but, had no money left to do so. I tried to shift around some Scouting money and that didn't help and my owner is controlling my PD budget so no room there to squeeze out some funds either. How could I possibly resist $500K a year!! I'm so use to today's contracts that my eyes were bulging out of my head trying to be creative enough to land him. Oh well - next season hopefully I will be able to be active in FA.

We have reach spring training now so, the season is about to start!

OK we have reached the start of the season in 1977! Who doesn't remember the game in the snow vs. the ChiSox with Doug Ault 1B blasting 2 HRs to be a Canadian Hero! Also all Blue Jays players back then were given small blue Honda Civics to drive. Times have changed!!

The preseason predictions have tightened up with the rosters trimmed back to 25. Lets see what the experts think now? Also both the Blue Jays and Mariners looking good in the Top Minor League Systems report.

Looks like my owner just wants to be competitive this year... Lets see if we can shock him and the world!

1978 Amateur draft is revealed!

The other down side of trying to compete sooner than later is not having the highest draft pick possible to land one of these studs.

Blue Jays struggle in May and now are 6.5 games back in the AL East. We are struggling at the plate and are pitching has been inconsistent.

Bruce Kison has been my best SP while Doug DeCinces has been a surprise at 3B/DH despite not hitting for a high average.

Who can forget Willie Stargell and the "We are Family Pirates of the 70's"...

Happy to see him hit his 400th dinger in a blow out win over the Cubs.

We just completed the 1978 June Amateur Draft and the Blue Jays were lucky to see Paul Molitor 2B available when they picked #2 overall!!

Not much was left by the time we got our 2nd selection but, I am happy with the pitchers in R2 and R3 :-))

We have reached July 4th, 1977 - Happy Birthday America! Nothing like a bit of fireworks USA style.

Blue Jays have a great June after some detailed managing of the lineup and rotation and pen. We had a 5 game win streak and we are currently on a 6 game win streak this month. We were undefeated in three double headers this month (6-0!). We immediately placed Paul Molitor in the lineup at 2B. He started off slowly but is picking up his stroke of late. We also called up Rob Andrews to add some additional hitting to a struggling lineup through May. The injury bug has hit the Blue Jays hard we have Ralph Garr OF, Jorge Orta 2B, Rusty Torres CF and Bruce Boisclare OF on the DL.

Doug DeCinces continues to shine .270, 20HR, 71 RBI.
Bruce Kison continues to shine 9-6, 3.56ERA

We brought up "THE BIRD" Mark Fidrych to hold the fort in LR and also southpaw Mike Willis in MR.

Overall, I am happy with our teams' performance. I had to make some adjustments to our stolen base strategy as well. We were struggling swiping 2nd base and the changes have paid off so far. Pete Rose and Rick Miller are now both in double digits in steals.

Should be a great run as we reach the ASG and then the trading deadline! INT FA is upon us as we look hard for a Tony Fernandez SS somewhere :-))

Doug DeCinces 3B, takes SP Tom Seaver deep for the only run the AL would get on this night in a 3-1 loss to the NL in the 1977 Allstar game.

Very quiet MLB 1977 Trade Deadline - only two transactions to speak of:

Blue Jays - we decided to stand pat and go with what we have as we are placed tied for 1st place in the AL East with the Indians.

Well Blue Jays fans, a disaster August has the Jays looking forward to 1978. 8-21 record in August puts the Jays back 9.5 games after leading the division at the start of the month! The baseball gods have spoken

We have issues in the rotation, pen and scoring runs right now. Amazing how the ups and downs of the season can wear on a GM.

The only player having a breakout season continues to be Doug DeCinces.

Kison & May have been my only 2 reliable starters but are posting ERAs over 4.00+ for the year. Bill Atkinson CL has been a nice surprise but, we just don't get to him enough with a lead!

Lets see if we can play hard and stay healthy in Sept/Oct to finish strong and send a message to MLB that the Blue Jays will be a strong contender in 1978.

We will be in 78 to fight the fight...

The 1977 World Series Champions are.............
California Angels behind Series MVP Nolan Ryan - my alltime favourite player too!

California stormed back from a 3-1 deficit to defeat the Pirates in 7 games. Nolan won both of his starts including a must win in Game 5.

Angels beat the Brewers to get there meanwhile the Pirates defeated the Giants.

Pretty fun season using OOTP16 baseball sim. I can't wait to get going in 1978!

Jays already extended Bucky Dent at SS for 2 years and I am working hard to get DeCinces to extend as well. I'm going to be letting many players walk this year as I try to land a decent FA or two in the offseason.

OK our first big off-season trade;

We sent packing Peter Rose for Hal McRae.

The development of Doug DeCinces at 3B with the arrival of Paul Molitor for 2B allowed me to deal from a strength to land the much needed OF bat in McRae not to mention the age difference!

Fans were happy too!

Blue Jays are not very active in the off-season but do land some help to the pitching staff. We also bring back Rick Miller for OF depth and his outstanding glove. We landed a legit CL and Doyle the ageless one will be one of our 4 SPs this year. Andy C, will back up John Wathan.

Tuesday, January 24th, 1978
Signed free agent RF Rick Miller to a 1-year contract worth a total of $125,000.

Tuesday, January 17th, 1978

Monday, January 16th, 1978
Signed free agent RP Terry Forster to a 2-year contract worth a total of $400,000.

1978 Spring Training is over, the Jays tied for the best W/L record. Hopefully this is a great sign of things to come in 78!

MLB Predictions though have us tough sledding in the AL East struggling to even reach .500. This 2nd year franchise has its work cut out for themselves.
