Besides age, is there a reason why OF range seems to decrease rapidly for young CFers?
https://imgur.com/a/swJ8RmC. This link provides an example of what I'm referring to. McNatty provides +8.2 ZR in his age 24 season, with above average efficiency. His age 25 season he dips to below average. Heading into his age 26 season he now grades out as a 60 CFer.
McNatty peaked at a defensive rating of 74 in CF according to past scouting reports. But this seems usual for OOTP. Stud CF prospect comes up, plays CF for two or three year, then requires a move to a corner position. Understand that this is somewhat similar to real life, but still seems like a 26 year old shouldn't be losing THAT much of a step. |

That could be it, he has spent some time on the DL. So for his individual case that probably could've been it. But even for guys who don't find themselves injured it seems rather normal for a CF prospect to be needed to be moved by his age 26 season. Provided they aren't the next Kevin Kiermaier in CF.

Speed is the first skill that players' tend to start losing, so it makes sense that outfield range could start to go down in the mid-20's.

Also, keep an eye on the players weight. It tends to increase as they age (obviously) and that often coincides with lower speed, as Rain King mentioned. Some guys gain weight quicker, but sometimes it will help them offensively while hurting their outfield range.

While true would it then be true to say that the majority of the best defensive seasons in CF in MLB have happened with players under the age of, say, 26? I'm not sure that would be true. But maybe it is. My perception has also been that outfielders in OOTP seem to start losing their range at a very early age. I remember guys like Brett Butler and Otis Nixon who seemed to be great defensive center fielders into their late 30's.
