2024 Cardinals -- Resurrecting the Redbirds

The Texas Rangers victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks in Game 5 of the World Series brought the 2023 Major League Baseball season to a close.
It also signaled the conclusion of one of the worst seasons in the history of the St. Louis Cardinals.
At 71-91, their worst record since 1990 and fifth worst in franchise history, the Cardinals finished in last place in the National League Central Division, some 21-games behind the first-place Milwaukee Brewers.
Changes had to be made.
First, it was up top where Michael Renkes was named manager as well as general manager.
Next, it was the assistant GM, with Michael Girsch, who served only as a mouthpiece for President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak, who was ousted in favor of Jed Hoyer.
On the coaching staff, hitting coach Turner Ward, pitching coach Dusty Blake and third-base coach Ron "Pop" Warner were all handed their walking papers.
They were replaced byJoey DeMonte (hitting coach), Brian Currie (pitching coach) and Jeff Frye (third-base coach), respectively.
Coming out of arbitration hearings, the Cardinals ranked 16th in payroll ($139,385,900) and have been told by owner Bill DeWitt II that he is willing to allow the team to move as high as eighth overall.
That spot is currently occupied by the Los Angeles Dodgers ($167,382,800) and he is willing to see a payroll as high as $180M.

Cards news: Nov. 19 -- OF Tyler O'Neill sent to Houston for SP Cristian Javier

Upgrading a pitching rotation which was among the worst in baseball, the St. Louis Cardinals made their first move acquired right-hander Cristian Javier from the Houston Astros in exchange for outfielder Tyler O'Neill.
The 26-year-old Javier started 31 games for the Astros in 2023 going 10-5 with a 4.56 ERA.
Javier broke into the majors in 2020 and in 109 career games/75 starts has gone 30-17 with a 3.57 ERA and two saves.
Acquired via trade from the Seattle Mariners in 2017, O'Neill, 28, reached the majors with the Cardinals in 2018.
Since then, he has played in 477 games/375 starts and hit .248 with 78 home runs and 217 RBIs.
He won Gold Gloves as a left fielder in 2020 and 2021.
His best overall season was in 2021, when he hit .286 with 34 homers and 80 RBIs.
But a myriad of injuries has limited his playing time the last two seasons.
In 2022, he got into 96 games/88 starts and hit .228 with 14 home runs an 58 RBIs.
This year, he only played in 72 games/59 starts, hitting .213 with nine homers and 21 RBIs.

Cards news: Nov. 21 -- Four-player deal with Nationals features SP Mackenzie Gore for 1B Luken Baker

The St. Louis Cardinals have acquired left-handed starting pitcher Mackenzie Gore and minor-league shortstop Robert Made from the Washington Nationals in exchange for first baseman Luken Baker and outfielder Michael Siani.
Gore, a former No. 3 overall pick in the 2017 draft by the San Diego Padres, made 27 starts for the Nationals in 2023 going 7-10 with a 4.42 ERA.
The 24-year-old also pitched in 16 games/13 starts for San Diego in 2023, going 4-4 with a 4.50 ERA.
Washington acquired Gore from San Diego in the offseason in a deal featuring Juan Soto.
The 2023 National League Player of the Year, Baker hit .334 with 33 home run and 98 RBIs for Memphis in 2023.
The 26-year-old also got into 33 games/23 starts with St. Louis, but hit only .209 with two home runs and 10 RBIs.
A well-regarded defender, the Cardinals claimed Siani off waivers from the Cincinnati Reds in August of 2023.
He spent time at both Memphis -- playing 10 games and hitting .226 with one RBI -- and with the Cardinals -- five games with no hits in five at bats.
Acquired via trade from the Cubs on July 31, the 21-year-old Made split time between High-A South Beloit (Cubs) and High-A Wilmington (Nationals).
In 92 games/91 starts, he hit just .217 with three homers and 30 RBIs.

Cards news: Nov. 22 -- Cards add Blake Snell to lead pitching staff

Improving their starting rotation was the primary goal of the St. Louis Cardinals in the offseason, they may have just completed the job with the signing of two-time Cy Young winner Blake Snell.
Snell, 30, agreed to a five-year deal worth $108 million. The contract includes a player option in 2027 and a team option in 2028.
He will make $19.5 million in 2024.
The left-hander collected his second Cy Young just this past season when he went 14-9 with a 2.25 ERA in 32 starts for the San Diego Padres.
His previous Cy Young came in 2018 while pitching for Tampa Bay.
That season, he made 31 starts and compiled a 21-5 record with a 1.80 ERA.
For his career, Snell has gone 71-55 with a 3.20 ERA in 191 starts.

Cards news: Jan. 2 -- RHP Liam Hendricks added to bullpen

The St. Louis Cardinals have signed 34-year-old right-handed relief pitcher Liam Hendricks to a two-year deal worth $8.64M.
A variety of injuries have prevented Hendricks from pitching much for the Chicago White Sox over the past two seasons -- twice cancer treatments kept him off the mound and he also deal with an elbow issue.
In 2023, Hendricks got into five games going 2-0 with one save and a 5.40 ERA.
But his career numbers are much better, since reaching the majors in 2011, Hendricks has worked in 476 games/44 starts and going 33-34 with 116 saves and a 3.83 ERA.

Cards news: February 2 -- SP Logan Gilbert acquired from Seattle in deal featuring Tommy Edman

The St. Louis Cardinals have acquired left-handed right-handed starting pitcher Logan Gilbert from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for IF/OF Tommy Edman, right-handed relief pitcher Guillermo Zuniga and outfielder Dylan Carlson.
Gilbert, 26, went 13-7 with a 3.73 ERA in 32 starts for the Mariners in 2023.
A first-round pick in the 2018 draft, Gilbert reached the majors in 2021 and since that time has gone 32-18 with a 3.76 ERA in 88 start.
The loss of the versatile Edman is a tough one for St. Louis.
The 28-year-old reached the majors in 2019 and since that time has hit .265 with 53 homers and 222 RBIs in 596 games/553 starts.
In 2023, he played in 137 games/129 starts and hit .249 with 13 home runs and 47 RBIs.
A first-round pick in the 2016 draft by St. Louis, Carlson has failed to reach his potential despite many of opportunities.
In 2023, he got into 76 games/59 starts for the Cardinals and hit just .219 with five home runs and 27 RBIs.
Since reaching the majors for the first time in 2020, Carlson, 25, has got into 388 games/346 starts and hit .243 with 34 home runs and 150 RBIs.
Signed as a free agent before for the 2023 season, Zuniga, 25, pitched in just two games for the Cardinals, posting no record and a 4.50 ERA.

Cards news: February 11 -- SS Nick Ahmed agrees to minor-league contract

The St. Louis Cardinals have announced the signing of 33-year-old shortstop Nick Ahmed to a minor-league contract with a major-league option worth $2M if he makes the 38-man roster.
Ahmed spent last season with the National League champion Arizona Diamondbacks, playing in 72 games/56 starts during which he hit .212 with two home runs and 17 RBIs.
Breaking into the majors in 2014, Ahmed has spent his entire career with the D-Backs.
He has a career-average of .234 with 70 home runs and 322 RBIs in 888 games/790 starts.
Ahmen signing was primarily to provide insurance in case top shortstop prospect Masyn Winn can't win the starting job out of spring training.

Cards news: February 11 -- IB/OF Yepez and C Knizner go to Oakland for OF Esteury Ruiz

The St. Louis Cardinals have acquired 24-year-old outfielder Esteury Ruiz from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for 1B/OF Juan Yepez, catcher Andrew Knizner and minor-league pitcher Joshua Baez.
Originally signed by the Kansas City Royals, Ruiz also spent time in the San Diego Padres and Milwaukee Brewers organizations before finally acquired by Oakland in December of 2022.
In 2023, Ruiz played in 132 games for Oakland and hit .254 with five home runs and 47 RBIs.
For his career, Ruiz is a .248 hitter with five homers and 49 RBIs in 149 games/123 start.
A good defender, Ruiz will provide depth at all three positions.
Yepez, 25, has played in 104 games/80 starts over the past two seasons for St. Louis batting .240 with 14 home runs and 32 RBIs.
His 2023 season was a struggle as he managed to bat just .183 with two home runs and two RBIs in 28 games/15 starts.
The 29-year-old Knizner had some good moments in his part of four seasons in St. Louis, but the emergence of Ivan Herrera as the team's backup catcher and probable future starter made him expendable.
In 2023, Knizner participated in 70 games/63 starts and hit .241 with a career-high 10 home runs and 31 RBIs.
Over his parts of four seasons with the Cardinals, Knizner hit .216 with 17 home runs and 76 RBIs in 256 games/201 starts.
A second-round pick in the 2021 draft by St. Louis, Baez, 20, was originally taken as an outfielder.
In his 146 games/139 starts since turning pro, Baez has hit just .219 with 13 home runs and 65 RBIs.
The Cardinals were talking about turning him into a pitcher before the trade.
