Red Fox Ale
Recreation of a signboard seen in the attached Huntington Avenue Grounds photos. This is a pre-prohibition ale manufactured in Boston by the Massachusetts Breweries Company not associated with the Red Fox Ale sold after prohibition by a Connecticut brewer. Surviving memorabilia is virtually non-existent, but I came across an auction for a vintage sign.

Clysmic table water
Evidently, bottled spring water from Wisconsin was a major fad during the early 1900s. Clysmic was one of those springs/brands that advertised in early ballparks like Hilltop Park, Polo Grounds, and the Huntington Avenue Grounds.

Red Fox Ale update
Just came across a high-res photo of the 1904 Huntington Avenue Grounds RCF wall at the Library of Congress. This revealed the text written along the bottom of the signboard.

Tuxedo Tobacco
A c1910 trolley car ad sign from an auction site. I haven't seen any signboards/banners with active players displayed in deadball era ballparks, but the subject matter is period correct.

Barnum & Bailey Circus
Great selection of turn-of-the-century Barnum & Bailey hi-res posters/banners are searchable here:
https://www.digitalcommonwealth.org/...alth:vd66vz88c Though they wouldn't have been posted inside the fields, these posters could've been hung outside the ballparks and buildings nearby. |

Hunter Rye Whiskey
This ad version is seen on the LF wall in pre-renovation Polo Grounds III per the attached 1906 photos. Low-res photos made tracing the lettering a challenge. Luckily, there was surviving memorabilia and artwork to reference colors and the horseman graphic. Later years saw a different signboard from Hunter Rye.

Breweriana
Though not technically correct for ballparks, regional vintage beer trade cards or bottle labels could be turned into signboards/banners. Searchable at https://www.taverntrove.com/index.php?

Great job!
I don't exactly know where this will end, but I love these old-time ads

White Rock table water
Another of those spring waters from the turn of the 19th century, this NY based company still exists today.
White Rock Beverages is the nation’s oldest beverage company having been established in 1871, by pharmacist H.M. Colver after he purchased the White Rock natural spring and its surrounding 60 acres in Waukesha, Wisconsin. Plenty of surviving pre-prohibition memorabilia exist as color references. My first recreation is based on a signboard I have only seen in Hilltop Park so far. Circa 1908 it is predominantly displayed on the RCF wall next to a Young's Hats signboard, but later seen replaced by an iconic Bull Durham tobacco ad and moved to atop the LF scoreboard circa 1910. White Rock continued
An alternate signboard with white/light lettering was used in some of the other NY ballparks. I've seen it on the 1911 Washington Park RCF wall and the early Polo Grounds IV LCF outfield wall.
I redid the lettering based on their ad in a 1921 World Series souvenir program. It took awhile to find a detailed image that revealed the alternate slogan, which I wouldn't have figured it out otherwise. What I'm having trouble with is determining the background color. In the previous post, their 1910s print ad features yellow and red primary colors and a true green secondary color. Also, vintage store signs with white lettering have a deep/navy blue background. None of those colors appear to match the ballpark photos. I'm posting two interpretations derived from shades of the blue and green used in the vintage memorabilia. Adams Black Jack Gum
Thomas Adams of Staten Island, New York is credited as the father of chewing gum. In 1871 Adams received the first patent on a gum-making machine and began mass producing a chicle-based gum. He began to experiment with flavorings, beginning with sarsaparilla. In 1884, he began adding a licorice flavoring and called his invention Adams' Black Jack, the first flavored gum in America.
Many of Adams' gum products were advertised in east coast ballparks and were changed almost annually. This re-creation is based on the signboard from 1918 Polo Grounds IV LCF bleachers. An excellent color ad from a 1921 World Series program served as the perfect reference. Last edited by the_mad_monk; 04-22-2019 at 07:36 PM. |

Exposition Park
Started reacquainting myself with Sketchup 2017 so I can pursue my original goal of updating Silvam's Exposition ballpark. Need to focus on the local/regional ads used there. Two I created from this 1904 opening day photoset. And yes, there were a few decades around the turn of the century that the city was officially spelled "Pittsburg".

Exposition Park continued
Having a difficult time filling up the OF wall of my 3D model. Re-created a Tech Beer signboard seen in this 1908 photo. Colors were guesstimated from 1940s+ branding. Took artistic liberties on the 1905 version of the Schenley whiskey signboard. Just not much surviving memorabilia from that era to reference.

Hopefully I can devote some time this winter to finishing up 4 or 5 more signboards for completing my Exposition Park mod. This last one is custom, but loosely based on a Restaurant & Bar sign in 1904 CF.
