1905 SOUTHERN ASSOCIATION

Teams:

Atlanta Crackers
Birmingham Barons
Little Rock Travelers
Memphis Egyptians
Montgomery Senators
Nashville Volunteers
New Orleans Pelicans
Shreveport Pirates

Schedule Characteristics:

SCHEDULE type="ILN_BGY_G143_T8_C_" inter_league="0" balanced_games="1" games_per_team="143" start_month="4" start_day="19" start_day_of_week="4"

Each team plays from 140 to 143 games. Teams play each other between 20 and 22 times during the season.

Season starts on April 19 and ends on September 23. Weekday games start at 3:00. Saturday, Sunday and holiday (Confederate Memorial Day (4/24 - AL only), Decoration Day (5/30), Independence Day (7/4)) games start at 1:00. Double-header games start at noon and 3:00. Sunday games only at Memphis, New Orleans, and Shreveport.

This should really be a 140-game schedule. The extra games are the result of adding some Sunday games, no doubt to generate additional revenue.

1915 GEORGIA STATE LEAGUE

Teams:

Americus Mackalees
Brunswick Pilots
Dothan (AL)
Thomasville Hornets
Valdosta Millionaires
Waycross Moguls

Schedule Characteristics:

SCHEDULE type="ILN_BGY_G100_T6_C_" inter_league="0" balanced_games="1" games_per_team="100" start_month="4" start_day="26" start_day_of_week="2"

The Americus team moved to Gainesville in mid-season, and the league renamed itself the Florida-Alabama-Georgia League (an unfortunate choice for an acronym).

1912 CENTRAL LEAGUE

Teams:

Akron Rubbermen
Canton Statesmen
Dayton Veterans
Erie Sailors
Ft. Wayne Railroaders
Grand Rapids Black Sox
South Bend Benders
Springfield Reapers
Terre Haute Terre-iers
Wheeling Stogies
Youngstown Steelmen
Zanesville Potters

Schedule Characteristics:

SCHEDULE type="ILN_BGY_G132_T12_C_" inter_league="0" balanced_games="1" games_per_team="132" start_month="4" start_day="24" start_day_of_week="4"

Each team plays 132 games. Teams play each other 12 times during the season.

Season starts on April 24 and ends on September 2. Weekday games start at 3:00. Saturday and Sunday games start at 1:00. Double-header games on holidays (Decoration Day (5/30), Independence Day (7/4), and Labor Day (9/2)) start at noon and 3:00, except for split home-and-home double-headers between Akron and Canton, which start at 10:00 and 3:00.

This is a very unusual twelve-team minor-league schedule from the railroad era. The vast majority of minor leagues had six or eight teams, and the Central League, which had eight clubs in 1911, was reduced to six teams in 1913.

1913 BORDER LEAGUE

Teams: (all teams located in Michigan except for Windsor)

Mt. Clemens Bathers
Pontiac Indians
Port Huron Independents
Windsor (ONT)
Wyandotte
Ypsilanti

Schedule Characteristics:

SCHEDULE type="ILN_BGY_G45_T6_C_" inter_league="0" balanced_games="1" games_per_team="45" start_month="5" start_day="24" start_day_of_week="7"

Each team plays 45 games. Teams play each other 9 times during the season, and teams play between 20 and 25 home/road games.

Season starts on May 24 and ends on September 14. Thursday games start at 3:00. Saturday, Sunday and holiday (Decoration Day (5/30), Independence Day (7/4), and Labor Day (9/1)) games start at 1:00.

Baseball Reference says that this was a "D" league. From the looks of the schedule, it might have been semi-pro. Apart from its length, the odd thing about this schedule is that The Sporting Life would have even printed it - there aren't a lot of examples of the major baseball publications printing schedules from the lowest rung of the minors, especially for a league with such a short season.

Thanks, I appreciate that.

I'll also add that I'm happy to accommodate requests (within reason). If someone wants the schedule for a past minor league season, I'll be happy to oblige. Of course, that might require providing the schedule along with the request - I don't have every past minor league schedule at my disposal.

1912 PACIFIC COAST LEAGUE

Teams:

Los Angeles Angels
Oakland Oaks
Portland Beavers
Sacramento Sacts
San Francisco Seals
Vernon Tigers

Schedule Characteristics:

SCHEDULE type="ILN_BGY_G212_T6_C_" inter_league="0" balanced_games="1" games_per_team="212" start_month="4" start_day="2" start_on_weekday="3"

Each team plays between 199 and 212 games. Teams play each other between 39 and 46 times during the season.

Season starts on April 2 and ends on October 27. Double-headers on holidays - Memorial Day (5/30), Independence Day (7/4), Labor Day (9/2), Admission Day (9/9 - California), and Columbus Day (10/12) - and on most Sundays. Weekday games start at 3:00. Weekend games start at 1:00. Double-header games start at noon and 3:00.

Even by Pacific Coast League standards, this is a long schedule - nearly seven months. The wide discrepancy in games played is the result of Portland and Sacramento playing only single games at home on Sundays - all other teams play double-headers. The breakdown (away/home) is as follows:

Los Angeles - 99/113 = 212
Oakland - 103/108 = 211
Portland - 106/93 = 199
Sacramento - 105/94 = 199
San Francisco - 103/109 = 212
Vernon - 106/105 = 211

1899 WESTERN LEAGUE

Teams:

Buffalo Bisons
Columbus Senators
Detroit Tigers
Indianapolis Hoosiers
Kansas City Blues
Milwaukee Brewers
Minneapolis Millers
St. Paul Apostles/Saints

(the Columbus Senators were replaced mid-season by the Grand Rapids Furnituremakers)

Schedule Characteristics:

SCHEDULE type="ILN_BGY_G126_T8_C_" inter_league="0" balanced_games="1" games_per_team="126" start_month="4" start_day="27" start_day_of_week="5"

Each team plays 126 games. Teams play each other 18 times during the season.

Season starts on April 27 and ends on September 11. Weekday games start at 3:00. Weekend and holiday (Decoration Day (5/30)) games start at 1:00. Double-header games start at noon and 3:00, except for split home-and-home double-header games between Minneapolis and St. Paul on July 4, which start at 10:00 and 3:00.

In 1900, Chicago and Cleveland would replace St. Paul and Grand Rapids, respectively, and the league would be renamed the American League.

1913 KANSAS STATE LEAGUE

Teams:

Clay Center Cubs
Great Bend Millers
Junction City Soldiers
Lyons Lions
Manhattan Elks
Salina Insurgents

Schedule Characteristics:

SCHEDULE type="ILN_BGY_G90_T6_C_" inter_league="0" balanced_games="1" games_per_team="90" start_month="5" start_day="16" start_day_of_week="6"

Each team plays 90 games. Teams play each other 18 times during the season.

Season starts on May 16 and ends on August 13. Weekday games start at 3:00. Weekend games start at 1:00. Double-header games start at noon and 3:00.

This schedule is unusual in one respect: there are no games scheduled for Memorial (Decoration) Day. Typically, baseball leagues at all levels scheduled double-headers for each of the summer holidays (Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day).

1925 INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE

Teams:

Baltimore Orioles
Buffalo Bisons
Jersey City Skeeters
Newark Bears
Reading Keystones
Rochester Tribe
Syracuse Stars
Toronto Maple Leafs

(the Newark Bears were replaced mid-season by the Providence Grays)

Schedule Characteristics:

SCHEDULE type="ILN_BGY_G168_T8_C_" inter_league="0" balanced_games="1" games_per_team="168" start_month="4" start_day="15" start_day_of_week="4"

Each team plays 168 games. Teams play each other 24 times during the season.

Season starts on April 15 and ends on September 20. Weekday games start at 3 :00. Weekend games start at 1:00. No Sunday games at Toronto. Double-header games start at noon and 3:00, except for split home-and-home double-header games between Rochester and Buffalo, which begin at 10:00 and 3:00.

I had to guess a lot more than usual with this because of the poor state of the posted schedule, but I think I got it mostly right.

Knoxville Smokies

Schedule Characteristics:

SCHEDULE type="ILN_BGY_G154_T8_C_" inter_league="0" balanced_games="1" games_per_team="154" start_month="4" start_day="16" start_day_of_week="6"

Each team plays 154 games. Teams play each other 22 times during the season.

Season starts on April 16 and ends on September 12. Weekday games start at 7:00. Weekend and holiday (Confederate Memorial Day (4/26 - Georgia and Alabama)) games start at 1:00. Weekend double-header games start at noon and 3:00. Weeknight (twi-night) double-header games start at 4:00 and 7:00.

July 4 fell on a Sunday in 1937, so holiday double-headers were played on July 5. Oddly, Decoration Day also fell on a Sunday (May 30 and July 4 always fall on the same day of the week) but there were no double-headers scheduled for May 31, suggesting to me that that Monday wasn't a holiday - at least not in the South.

Start times for the local major league clubs were posted in the New York Times at least as early as 1918. The Chicago Tribune began posting start times for all MLB games in mid-1964; the Washington Post had begun doing the same no later than 1978; the New York Times didn't begin doing the same until the early 1980s, if I recall correctly.

The major league start times might not be identical to those used in the minor leagues, but they're probably similar.

See the attached .zip for a Wordpad file listing the historical start times for the NYC major league clubs in selected years from 1919-51. It's a work in progress—eventually more years will be added.

The last time I made a catalog of what I have available (which was many years ago) I had a total of 1,261 minor league schedule files in either paper, scan, or PDF form. (308 of those had been turned into either text or Excel files capable of being converted into OOTP's schedule format with a bit of work.)

I've added probably several hundred more minor league schedules to the collection since then. I've never sat down to update the catalog as it would probably take several hours to do...

Incidentally, some years back I went through all the online issues of The Sporting News and made a list of every minor league schedule I could find printed in it, noting the league, season, TSN edition date and page number. I can post that list if anyone's interested.
