11/1/1927 - A bad end to a good season
You push all the right buttons, you win a 100 games, and yet the end of the year wrap-up feels eerily similar to year 1 when we lost 95 games. When there is really one goal before moving on, you can almost throw out the season results when you get swept in the World Series.
So with the World Series loss I have mixed emotions. We got to the next level, and everything came together this season, but the World Series was rough. Joe Hauser hit .372 with 3 home runs, 18 RBI, and 18 runs scored to win the Batter of the Month award in September. Keith Hernandez of the Pirates and Willie McCovey of the Tigers each picked up their 2000th career hit. Frank Chance became just the 8th player to collect 6 hits in a game, and the first player to do so in 6 years. Joe Pepitone was our top pick in the amateur draft, and he is capable of playing both first base and center field. Catcher Robinson Chirinos was our second pick, with reliever Al Corwin, reliever Lariel Gonzalez, and RF Kenny Kelly rounding out the draft. Starlin Castro retired after just one year with the Phillies, although he did go 1-3. Catcher Jack Redmond also hung it up. Four pitchers were elected to the Hall - Camilo Pascual: Pete Schneider: Ned Garver: Russ Bauers: Career Hit List 1. Dick Allen - 2911 2. Chipper Jones #- 2813 3. Pablo Sandoval #- 2698 4. Eddie Collins, Sr. #- 2619 Philadelphia Phillies - 61-93 (.396) 27 1/2 GB 1921 - Philadelphia Phillies 69-85 (.448) 11 1/2 GB (Season Score - 17) 1922 - Philadelphia Phillies 80-74 (.519) 7 GB (Season Score - 52) 1923 - Philadelphia Phillies 82-72 (.532) 6 1/2 GB (Season Score - 27) 1924 - Philadelphia Phillies 84-70 (.545) 6 GB (Season Score - 34) 1925 - Philadelphia Phillies 87-67 (.565) 3 GB ( Season Score - 46) 1926 - Philadelphia Phillies 87-67 (.565) 7 GB (Season Score - 23) 1927 - Philadelphia Phillies 100-54 (.649) - GB, Lost World Series 4-0 to Cleveland Indians (Season Score -75) |

You can't start much better than 15-3, with the number one defense, fewest runs allowed, and second most runs scored.

6/1/1928 - Surviving the injuries
We had our share of injuries this month, with 9 players on the DL at one point, but the Phillies were able to finish 19-9 for the month, and now hold a 9 game lead. There were a couple of good things about our injuries - 1) they were fairly minor and 2) we had the depth to fill in with capable replacements.
Mike Pagliarulo had a 27 game hitting streak this month, which ended with an 0-3 night against the Braves. Pags hit .392 for the month with 3 home runs, 22 runs, and 20 RBI to win the Hitter of the Month. Tom Seaver won the Pitcher of the Month after going 6-1 with a 2.76 ERA. Around the league Doug Griffin of the Braves hit for the cycle. Career Hit List 1. Dick Allen - 2911 2. Chipper Jones #- 2872 3. Pablo Sandoval #- 2733 4. Eddie Collins, Sr. #- 2670 |

7/1/1928 - Rolling along
The Phillies had our worst month of the season after going 15-11, but we have an 11 game lead over the Pirates.
George Stone of the Giants picked up the 2000th hit of his career. Pat Kelly of the Browns hit for the cycle. Career Hit List 1. Dick Allen - 2911 2. Chipper Jones #- 2900 3. Pablo Sandoval #- 2757 4. Eddie Collins, Sr. #- 2703 |

How is Ruth doing?

Ruth is doing well so far, although not up to his high standards. He passed 300 home runs last season and entered the season with 315 home runs. His average (.264), OBP (.370), and OPS (.860) are all low based on his actual totals, but he is the home run leader by a large margin.
Edit - I was one season ahead, so he hit 300 this season, and a little preview, will finish the season with 315 home runs. Last edited by NYY #23; 09-11-2012 at 06:22 PM. |

8/1/1928 - 14 game lead
With a 14 game lead I feel like we are running out the clock on the way to the World Series. Hopefully I'm not getting too overconfident, but I feel good about our chances and I'm looking forward to getting to the World Series, and winning with the Phillies.
Eddie Collins won the Batter of the Month award after hitting .414 with 1 home run, 22 RBI, and 20 runs scored. It seems like it's been forever, but Jim Maloney of the Indians pitched a no-hitter against the Yankees. It was the first no-hitter in the league since 1919. Teammate Tom Zachary won the 200th game of his career earlier in the month against the Tigers. Babe Ruth hit career home run number 300, and now has 22 home runs this year. |

9/1/1928 - 13 is the magic number
A 14-12 month brought our magic number down to 13, and we hold a 14 1/2 game lead over the Cubs.
Joe Hauser won the Batter of the Month after hitting .367 with 3 home runs, 18 RBI, and 17 runs scored. Butch Wensloff went 6-1 with a 1.70 ERA to win the Pitcher of the Month award. |

So I am assuming Chipper is now the all-time hit leader? How old is he? Is he going to be the first to 3000?

10/2/1928 - World Series Game 1
Our opponent for the World Series was the 91-63 Chicago White Sox, who held on to win the American League by 2 games over the Indians.
Game one featured 22 game winner Billy O'Dell taking the ball for the White Sox, against our own 22 game winner, Butch Wensloff. Wensloff is coming off a disappointing World Series last year and I was hoping he could redeem himself this series. The first 6 innings were a pitcher's duel, and with the score tied at 0 heading in to the bottom of the seventh Joe Pepitone and Ron Roenicke led off the inning with back to back singles. BJ Upton walked to load the bases, and Hanley Frias single home the first run of the game. With pitcher Butch Wensloff coming up to the plate with 0 outs and the bases loaded I probably would have removed him for a pinch hitter, but my manager didn't and he singled home the second run of the game. Eddie Collins lined out for the first out of the inning, which brought Mike Pagliarulo to the plate. He drove a 2-2 pitch 368 feet over the left field wall for a grand slam and put the Phillies up 6-0. We added another run in the bottom of the eighth and the Phillies rolled to an 8-0 game 1 victory. Definitely a better start than last World Series. |

10/3/1928 - World Series Game 2
If game 1 was great, game 2 was terrible. Tommy Hanson took the mound for the White Sox, against Al Downing. The White Sox put up 8 runs, and we could only score 4.
Mike Pagliarulo hit his second home run of the series and drove in a pair of runs. I can't help but think back to the Kelly Gruber trade, and realize how glad I am that I kept Pags. I don't even know how Gruber has done since leaving, but Pagliarulo has been better than I could have ever hoped. He's been a career .319 hitter so far, and developed in a way he never did in real life. Joe Hauser went 3-4 with a homer and 2 RBI. The series is all tied up. |

10/5/1928 - World Series Game 3
Tom Seaver took the mound tonight in the hopes of putting us back ahead in the series. He was horrible giving up 5 runs in 5 innings, but even worse was the performance from Bruce Sutter, who gave up 4 runs in 2 1/3 innings.
The White Sox blew us out 9-1 and took a 2-1 series lead. I'm suddenly feeling less than good about this series. |

10/6/1928 - World Series Game 4
Butch Wensloff took the mound for game 4 trying to even up the series for the Phillies. After a brilliant game 1 performance, Ken Singleton singled home a run in the bottom of the first to put the White Sox up 1-0.
Luckily Wensloff settled down after that, but the Phillies couldn't manage any runs and the score remained at 1-0 heading into the 7th inning. Jayson Werth led off the top of the 7th with a single, and came home to score the tieing run on a Jim Pagliaroni double. A BJ Upton sacrifice fly two batters later scored the 3rd and final run of the game, as the Phillies held on for a 2-1 win. Wensloff picked up his second win of the series and has now allowed just 1 run in 18 innings. It's all tied up again. |
