Baltimore Wins World Series!

MLB Box Scores, San Francisco Giants at Baltimore Orioles, 10/28/2016

Game 5 of Hardball Retrospective Expansion Era World Series

Leading 7-6 entering the ninth inning, San Francisco called on Keith Foulke to close out the contest and force a return to their home park. Al Bumbry singled with one out. After Steve Finley hit into a fielder's choice, Cal Ripken Jr. kept the Orioles alive with a single to right field, with Finley advancing to third and Ripken to second on an error by RF Bobby Bonds.

Foulke proceeded to work carefully to the next batter, Ron Hansen. On a full count with the winning run on second base, Hansen slammed Foulke's next delivery into orbit. The 400-foot blast cleared the left field wall, sending the Orioles to victory with a walk-off wallop!

The Orioles left little doubt who was the better team. Celebrating a banner year, "team" was the word of the day in the victorious clubhouse after the game.

"Hitting, pitching, fielding; those are all things you need to win, but most importantly you need a team, a team that works together toward the same collective goal," said O's third-sacker Brooks Robinson. "When one guy had an off day, 24 others stepped up their game and filled the void."

A jovial mood filled the air as Baltimore celebrated into the night. The city's mayor said parade plans were underway and a "huge celebration" would be in order.
