Bad junior players on NHL rosters
Playing a savegame as the Oshawa Generals in the OHL I became pretty angry that my two best players, aged 18 and 19, were never returned to me by the Edmonton Oilers and the Vancouver Canucks once the NHL regular season started. They are obviously not ready for the big league, so it makes no sense to let them rot on the NHL roster, which they do -- in late October they still haven't dressed for a single game.
So I digged a little deeper and found out that 10+ NHL teams do the same. They use junior-aged players, who have no business in the NHL, to fill up their rosters. They keep players that are WAY down their depth chart in the NHL. I thought that only happens in custom games, especially in the starting years, but it happens in the NHL, too, which is very bad obiouvsly. My first guess is that these are cases of bad salary cap management, but I haven't looked close enough. By the way, I found the curious case of the St. Louis Blues: They had a few injuries and suddenly had only 16 players on their roster. For two games they only dressed 14 skaters, then filled up their roster to 23 players again. I don't know what's going on there. Edit: By the way, what's up with NHL GMs on insisting to have 23 players on their roster? Maybe that is part of the problem here? Last edited by pens66; 02-09-2018 at 12:52 PM. |

Small update: Early November the Canucks finally send down my #1 center Ryan Suzuki. He scored 7 points in the first 2 games, so that's that
Vancouver now only has their 18 year old stud defenseman remaining, that sits #15 on their depth chart (excluding unsigned players for which they have the rights). |
