MLB Players weekend
What's your opinion on Players Weekend? Do you think it's too much overkill to alter the unis and caps so much? Do you like the look and feel of it? Any of you think it throws tradition out the window? Is it just a big marketing scheme?
IMO, I think it's pretty neat. I cant say I like every single jersey and cap, but the way baseball seems to be dying in the eyes of the masses, it might keep things interesting, especially for kids. Opinions? |

Incredibly huge, incredibly stupid pile of steaming garbage just to make another extra dime.

If its something the players want then I'm okay with it. I think the unis are hideous and I don't like the nickname on them. But if the players like it then I support it.

Look at all those fans at the Reds-Cubs tilt that are wearing the stupid, garish, ugly uniforms with the stupid, garish, ugly nicknames on the back. Owners and players should be careful here that nobody's getting a hernia when they are carrying the bags of cash to the car after the game...

How can people not like the Box Burger emojis? I'm a surly old fart and that got a laugh out of me.

It's ok. It's one weekend in a bunch of weekends. I am not buying the jersey so it's no skin off my nose. Have fun!

I generally agree with Orcin but I share unease with Westheim, not about the cash involved but what it does, even just incrementally, to baseball tradition.

I think it's fine. The uniforms I've seen (I'm talking about the Cleveland-KC series) are ugly, and some of the nicknames are pretty unimaginative, but what the heck.
My wife told me one of our pitchers, I think his name is Shane Bieber, picked the nickname "Not Justin." That's kind of funny. On the other hand, our superstar shortstop Francisco Lindor picked "Mr Smile," which is too obvious and anyway I think it was what he picked last year. Kluber didn't pick a nickname at all, although Cleveland writers like to call him "Klubot."

You know, when all is said and done, it's the baseball that counts, not the uniforms or any of the other stuff. So in this regard, they could be wearing pajamas and it would not make a difference, I suppose.

The players enjoy it and the fans get a kick out of the nicknames. It’s fun and that’s what baseball need. So much of baseball is anti-fun on the part of the players. We need less of that. This helps.

I'd prefer not to have the gimmicky jerseys but it also doesn't really bother me, I do not care one way or the other about the nicknames on the back.

mlb needs an image upgrade and things like these could be vital in getting people interested

Yes, that's the one thing the players need: A weekend dedicated to themselves. Because being a baseball player is so hard these days, what with the slave wadges and poor treatment and all. So now, along with all that obnoxious "walk-up" music, they can have their nicknames plastered on the back of their jerseys to feel good about themselves. And I'm sure the national profile of Mike Trout just zoomed skyward now that he has a nickname. Knocked LeBron right off his perch. I'm sure the line outside the Dicks Sporting Goods store in Miami must have been five miles long this morning, with all those Marlins fans dying to get a hold of one. That is what baseball's image needs! More sarcasm!
