Mariners Acquire Alex Colome, Denard Span

In a stunning early-season swap, the Mariners have acquired reliever Alex Colome and outfielder Denard Span from the Rays. RHPs Andrew Moore (Mariners #4 prospect, AA) and Tommy Romero (A) will go to Tampa Bay in return. $4.75M is also going to Seattle in the swap.

The club is off to a nice start (29-27), but just lost Robinson Cano for eighty games (and the postseason) due to a suspension. Of course, the Cano suspension also freed up around $11MM in cash for the organization to deploy elsewhere. The new additions are earning $11MM (Span) and $5.3MM (Colome) for the season, so they are owed almost exactly that amount (around $11.2MM) the rest of the way. The extra $4.75M means Seattle will have some extra spending money.

Colome is surely the headliner of this deal. He has served as the closer in Tampa Bay for the past three seasons, racking up 95 saves in that span. He’ll be eligible for arbitration one final time over the offseason, so there’s some future value here for the M’s. The Mariners will bet that he returns to more dominant results in a high-leverage role. Of course, they won’t ask him to handle the ninth, which will likely remain the domain of young fireballer Edwin Diaz. Span has now been dealt twice in the final year of his contract. The 34-year-old no longer moves as well as he once did but is still a polished hitter and should be a legit 5th OF for the Mariners, who can play all 3 outfield positions.

On the other side of the agreement, the Rays have again acted to shave a fair bit of salary obligations. It’s hard to avoid the conclusion that the ability to move Span’s contract — which itself was acquired only to offset partially the money the Giants took on in the off-season’s Evan Longoria swap — was a strong motivating factor.

Still, they’ll also recoup some talent here. Moore, 23, has had plenty of success in the minors and reached the big leagues last year. He’s not really regarded as a high-ceiling hurler, but could be a near-term option that fits the Rays’ current model that relies upon multi-inning relievers. This year in AA, Moore had spun a 3.28 ERA in 60.1 IP, but will report straight to Tampa Bay to play in the MLB level. Moore is also a candidate to start for the Rays on the 2nd of June, which is against the Mariners. Romero, 20, was a 15th-round pick last year, and after having a solid debut year in the AZL, he will report to single-A for he Rays and start pitching immediately for them.

Do you edit any ratings? Denard Span and Guillermo for that matter have made huge adjustments that have doubled their walk rates.

I haven't edited anything yet, but I have seriously thought about editing Guillermo's eye/discipline at least up to a 50 but I don't know yet. I like the way things have gone so far to be honest.

Mariners Select Chris Herrmann’s contract from AAA Tacoma, option C David Freitas to AAA, Taylor Motter DFA’d

The Mariners have selected catcher/outfielder Chris Herrmann from Triple-A, Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times tweets. The club sent fellow catcher David Freitas to Triple-A in a corresponding 25-man move, though the Mariners still needed to create a 40-man spot for Herrmann. He previously played in the majors with the Twins (2012-15) and Diamondbacks (2016-17), combining for a .202/.278/.344 line in 811 plate appearances. Herrmann remained with the D-backs organization through the offseason, but they released him in late March and he quickly hooked on with the Mariners on a minor league pact. Herrmann earned his promotion to the Mariners with a solid offensive showing in Tacoma, where he opened 2018 with a .266/.424/.444 line and six home runs across 177 PAs in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League. Freitas was kept as the backup catcher Mike Marjama, but has struggled since that decision was made, as he’s hitting a poor .102 in 49 at bats.

The Mariners have designated infielder Taylor Motter for assignment, the team announced. His 40-man roster spot will go to catcher/outfielder Chris Herrmann, whom they selected from Triple-A Tacoma. Motter has been with the Mariners organization since they acquired him from the Rays in November 2016, though he may now be on his way to another franchise. The 28-year-old Motter hasn’t impressed offensively since debuting in 2016, having recorded a .201/.272/.334 line in 397 trips to the plate. Motter brings defensive versatility, though, with major league experience at every position but catcher (including one appearance as a pitcher).

EDIT: Motter has been claimed by the Minnesota Twins.

Mariner Activate RP Alex Colome and OF Denard Span, Send Down RP Casey Lawrence and 1B/DH Dan Vogelbach to AAA Tacoma

RHP Casey Lawrence has been sent down to make room for RP Alex Colome, who will help with late inning duties, allowing Juan Nicasio to get some rest every now and then. Another reliever, like Chasen Bradford (2 ER in 11 IP) or Ryan Cook (1 ER in 10 IP) were candidates to be sent down for OF Denard Span due to the Mariners currently running with a 8-man bullpen, but they’ve been so great in middle relief roles, that after a key error on defense cost the Mariners a game late, Dan Vogelbach was the guy who gets sent down to make room for OF Denard Span. Vogelbach was hitting .303 in an extremely small sample size this season, but his defense has hurt his overall value, which is why he was chosen to be sent down to Tacoma. The team has stated that we will see Vogey back up at some point this season, and he will get at-bats, but they will likely be as a DH or as a pinch hitter in games unless he improves his defense considerably.

The Mariners offense is without its excellent leadoff hitter Dee Gordon, who should be back in mid-June. It is rumored that the Mariner will move him back to 2B temporarily as the team has been playing Gordon Beckham and Andrew Romine every day at 2B, who have combined for -0.3 WAR. This would give Guillermo Heredia the chance to play CF every day, with Mitch Haniger in RF and Ben Gamel in LF with Denard Span adding extra depth as a 4th OF who can pinch run late in games with his plus speed. Once Robinson Cano returns it is not sure what the Mariners will do, but it’s likely they go shorthanded with maybe only 6 guys in the bullpen come mid-august when Cano is eligible to return (assuming there are no other injuries).

Mariners Get Two Wepth Pieces From the Indies

Former MLB hurler Ross Detwiler is joining the Mariners organization, per an announcement from the Atlantic League. The 32-year-old had been pitching with the York Revolution, In his nine years in the majors, Detwiler has compiled 578 innings of 4.36 ERA pitching. Detwiler isn’t the only pitcher moving from the Atlantic League to Tacoma. Righty Tyler Higgins, who was with the New Britain Bees, will be doing the same. The former Marlins farmhand has never previously pitched above the Double-A level and signed with the Bees after the 2017 season.

Mariners Add Another Indie Vet

Another day, another signing. Mariners have added 32-year-old reliever Daniel Schlereth. The lefty hasn't pitched in the bigs since 2012, and spent last season in the Marlins organization, mostly in Double-A. He'll report to Arkansas.

Mariners DFA Mark Rzepczynski, call up Roenis Elias

The Mariners announced today that they have designated southpaw Marc Rzepczynski for assignment. His MLB roster spot will go to fellow lefty Roenis Elias, who has been recalled from Triple-A. Rzepczynski, 32, had signed a two-year deal with the Seattle organization before the 2017 season. He’s earning $5.5MM this season under that contract. The signing has not really turned out as hoped. Like most of his prior employers, the M’s have tried to limit Rzepczynski to facing left-handed hitters. Rzepczynski is a 10-year Major League veteran who has pitched for the Blue Jays, Cardinals, Indians, Padres, A's, Nationals and Mariners, and he owns a career 3.92 ERA. His 501 MLB appearances are the fifth most among active left-handed relievers. Seattle now has seven days to trade, release or outright Rzepczynski's contract to the Minor Leagues. His departure opens a spot on the 40-man roster, which now is at 39. James Pazos had replaced Rzepczynski as the club's late-inning left-handed setup man in recent weeks, and Elias now will fill the second lefty spot in the bullpen, with the ability to pitch longer outings as a converted starter. Elias, 29, went 2-4 with a 4.94 ERA with 27 strikeouts and 12 walks in 31 innings over seven games, including six starts, for Tacoma. In his last outing on Wednesday at Las Vegas, he tossed 6 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and three walks while striking out three. Prior to being acquired by the Mariners, Elias was 1-0 with one save and a 1.23 ERA with nine strikeouts and two walks in 7 1/3 innings in four games as a reliever for Triple-A Pawtucket. Elias was a starter in Seattle in 2014-15 before being traded to Boston. But he spent most of 2017 on the disabled list while dealing with a strained oblique, and the Red Sox traded him back to the Mariners this year for cash or a player to be named.

Mariners Conclude 2018 MLB Draft

After selecting an offensive player with their last five first round picks, the Mariners used this year’s 1st round selection—14th overall—on Stetson University right hander Logan Gilbert. The Mariners’ lack of top flight pitching prospects was magnified with the recent departures of RHP Andrew Moore and Tommy Romero, so re-stocking the system with arms was thought to be a priority headed into the draft. Gilbert, who stands 6’5” 195 lbs, put an exclamation point on an already impressive 2018 campaign on Saturday, striking out 14 through 7.0 innings against Oklahoma State in the NCAA Regionals. M’s fans can get a look at their future top pitching prospect this weekend when Stetson takes on UNC. In addition to established major leaguers RHP Corey Kluber and RHP Jacob deGrom, Stetson has also produced Mariners farmhand RHP Lindsay Caughel in recent years. The Mariners selected Gilbert over several projected early picks, including college RHP Brady Singer who was expected to be the first college arm off the board following #1 pick Casey Mize, as well as prep LHP Matthew Liberatore and 3B Nolan Gorman. Gilbert uses an advanced four pitch arsenal that consists of a fastball that touches 97mph, slider, curve, and change, none of which grade lower than 50. The Florida-native threw up a 0.80 WHIP this past season en route to winning the Atlantic Sun Pitcher of the Year Award, cutting his walk rate down 1.8 K/9 and seeing his strikeout rate jump up to 12.9 K/9. He was equally impressive last summer in the Cape Cod League, where he posted a 1.72 ERA and 0.90 WHIP against the game’s top prospects. While there were a few good options available for Seattle at this point, Gilbert is pretty universally viewed as one of the better arms in the draft, and immediately slots in as Seattle’s top pitching prospect. He will begin in Everett (A-) and could possibly be in Modesto at the start of next year.

The Mariners have also made their second pick of the 2018 MLB draft, and it’s toolsy Louisville OFer Josh Stowers (pronounced “stores”) with the #54 overall pick. He’s an elite base-stealer, nabbing 36 bases this season while only being caught 7 times. He performed well on the Cape this past summer and was one of the quickest risers leading up to the draft thanks to just powering through the first few rounds of the NCAA tournament. Beyond what he brings on the field, Stowers is a leader off the field as well, and fits in with the importance of character we’ve seen emphasized on the farm in recent years. Stowers has an easy uppercut swing with power to the pull side. Stowers will start in Everett as well (A-)

Cal Raleigh is a 6’3”, 225 lb switch hitting catcher from Florida State. Raleigh comes from a baseball family, with a father and uncle who both played at Western Carolina. His dad went on to coach at his alma mater and at Tennessee, while his uncle spent 10 years in the Minor Leagues. The younger Raleigh jumped on the map as a freshman at Florida State, scuffled as a sophomore, but has bounced back with a strong junior season, at least with the bat. The switch-hitting backstop has swung the bat well, especially in the second half of his junior season, using an advanced approach at the plate to hit for average and power while drawing a ton of walks. It’s more power over hit, with some concern over him hitting enough at the next level to tap consistently into that raw pop. Raleigh’s defensive game, however, has not taken the same step forward this year. Not overly athletic, he hasn’t been very agile behind the plate and his blocking and receiving have been inconsistent, as has been his arm. College catching is always hard to find, and Raleigh has done it for three years at Florida State. Teams will be buying the bat here, with the hope that he’ll defend just well enough to stick there as an offensive-minded catcher. He will also start in Everett (A-)

After taking a catcher in the previous round, the Mariners went back to the college ranks again, this time taking 6’2” lefty Michael Plassmeyer from Missouri. This isn’t the first time the Mariners have taken a Tiger pitcher—RHP Reggie McClain, currently with Modesto, is also a Mizzou grad. He will pitch in the AZL this year with an oppurtunity to start in Clinton or Modesto next year.

All Star Break Update

(Warning: this will be a long post, detailing season stats, prospect movement, etc.)

All Star Rosters:

AL:

NL:

Mariners had four representatives, all pitchers, as SP James Paxton and RPs Juan Nicasio, Alex Colome, and CL Edwin Diaz have been amazing and are a big reason the Mariners are where they are in the standings.

Standings:

The Mariners are currently in 2nd place in the west, but 11 GB from Houston, who is running away with the division. The Mariners best chance of making the playoffs is getting one of the two wild card spots, which is a tight race at the halfway point in the season.

Current 25-man roster:

Pitching:

Lineup:

Prospects update:

- #17 Prospect OF Luis Liberato has shot up mid-season prospect lists due to him outperforming every other Mariners minor league hitter in 2018. In 91 games, the 22 year old has hit .322 with a 139 OPS+ including 30 2B, 9 3B and 13 HR for Modesto (A+). This performance has catapulted him up to AA Arkansas, where he will continue playing LF every day whie maybe seeing a little bit more time n CF/RF to potentially give him experience at all three positions and make him a 4th OF sooner than expected.

- OFs Braden Bishop (#6 overall) and Eric Filia (#12 overall) have both hit exceptionally well in Arkansas and will be starting the second half in Tacoma. Filia especially has been just superb in only 39 games mostly playing RF to catch up with his LF skills. In Tacoma he will play some 1B as well to potentially become a average defender there as well. Bishop will still play CF every day while OF Ian Miller shifts over to LF to account for his weak arm.

- Mariner #1 prospect Kyle Lewis and #22 prospect 2B Donnie Walton have both also advanced to AA Arkansas, as both have hit over .300 all year and both had OPS+'s of about 120 each. Lewis will continue to work in CF even though he is already a plus defender in LF and above average in RF, and Walton, who played some SS in Modesto will now primarily play 2B.

- RP Art Warren (#9 prospect) has absolutely dominated AA as the closer for Arkansas, and has been promoted to Tacoma after posting a 1.60 ERA in 45 innings this year. He is a candidate to potentially be added to the 40-man roster and make his debut in Seattle this September.

The Mariners have released OFs Jayson Werth/Kirk Nieuwenhuis and RP Mike Morin who have all under performed for Tacoma this year, to make room for Bishop/Filia/Warren.

That will do it for the ASB update, I'll post any trades I make before the deadline, and then a July update where I post everyone's stats and the standongs, etc.

July Update

Record: 60-47

Standings:

Pitching (Starters):

Pitching (Relievers):

Batters:

Even though we held pat at the trade deadline, we really could've used a good 5th starter, but I couldn't find any deal that didn't involve them wanting my top prospects that I plan on keeping for now.

Next post will likely be August's update, where I'll also show who is coming up when the rosters expand.
