What did I do wrong and can I fix it?

Hello
I've been running a historical league for about 11 seasons. I started in 1921 with the Yankees (I'm a Ruth fan). Everything was fine for about 8 years with historical rookies showing up in the rookie draft, just as I wanted. But then I had to tweek some things and everything went to hell.
I found the rookie draft a bit boring so I increased slightly the number of "discoveries" and allowed random rookies from history to appear.
My league was suddenly swamped with ace pitchers. Strikeouts are ridiculous with 5 or more shutouts a day in the league, No hitters aren't uncommon and perfect games are a dime a dozen. Unless you have a lineup of home run hitters you lose. Many games consist of strike out after strike out punctuated by the occasional solo home run. Almost all the runs are being scored are on homers.
So why did the pitchers suddenly all become strikeout artists? Can I seriously tone them down?
If I have to start over how do I make sure this doesn't happen again.
