2008 MIDSEASON UPDATE

CYCLONES PROVE THEY'RE NOT ONE HIT WONDERS
ATLANTIC CITY - The New Jersey Cyclones lead the AL East by three games over the NY Yankees, proving the defending World Series champs are poised to repeat their success from last season.

"We're committed to getting back there and winning this thing again", said Cyclones manager Cito Gaston, who is looking for the opportunity to become the first manager to take two different teams to back-to-back titles in World Series.

CONTENDERS, THANK YOU VERY MUCH
BALTIMORE - The Baltimore Orioles are very much in the race for the AL South this season, behind a revamped lineup featured many of the players the club acquired at the end of last season. The O's are tied with Texas and Oregon for the best record in baseball.

GIANTS BACK ON TOP
SAN FRANCISCO - The Giants have endured losing seasons each of the past five years, but have vaulted to the top of the NL West so far this season, behind the bat of Ken Griffey, Jr., who has seven homers and the "Danish Sensation" Orval Hajek who was acquired in the off-season. He's done nothing other than hit .484 with 24 homers and 71 RBI in just 81 games. "Orval is amazing." said Giants hitting coach Bobby Bonds. "I'm just in awe of the way he plays. I can't imagine why they let him go," he added.

LEAGUE UPDATE

I meant I posted something on here. But apparently it didn't take.

At any rate, the league site is updated to August 22, 2008. It only has standings, team sites and the like. Player cards are not updated, but will be at the final season (post-World Series) updated.

More league news later.

2008 PLAYOFFS

As the dust settles, we have some new teams playing with the big boys, while many of the usual suspects are still around:

Arizona makes it first modern era playoff apperance and will face off against Philadelphia, which won its third straight NL East title.

San Francisco makes its first modern era apperance in the playoffs as well against the Chicago Cubs, looking for their first World Series berth since 2002.

In the AL, Oregon looks to get the monkey off its back against Boston.

The other division series pits two of the three AL teams to win World Series in the modern era, Texas and defending champ, New Jersey.

.400? PLEASE
One reason the San Francisco Giants are in the playoffs this year is behind the bat of the Dane Sensation Orval Hajek. A year after Ben Hauser became the first man since Ted Williams to hit .400, Hajek hit .448! He hit 32 homers and had 118 RBI in his rookie season. Not bad for a guy most teams passed on in the draft of 2006.

Trust me, I wouldn't have edited him and then traded him away.

Yeah, trading him wasn't dumb because I got players I needed at the time. But shoot....those numbers are out of this world.

2008 PLAYOFFS

DIVISION SERIES

In the Division Series, the Philadelphia Phillies made short work of the Arizona Diamondbacks, ending their illusions of making it back to the World Series. Sorry kids, this is the MODERN ERA. The Phillies won the Series 4 games to 1

In the other NL Division Series, the Chicago Cubs squeaked past the San Francisco Giants 4 games to 3.

In the AL, The Oregon Emeralds were probably the team most thankful for the repeal of the bypass rule, as the team with the best record, they played the Boston Red Sox and sent them to the golf course, winning the series in five games.

In the other series, the defending World Champion Cyclones managed to squeak past the Texas Rangers in the seventh and deciding game, but doing it convincingly 10-1 in Game Seven.

LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP
In the ALCS, we have a matchup of last year's Division Series matchup between Oregon and New Jersey. These expansion siblings have little love for each other, as evidenced in the pre-game press conferences.

"What, you mean the choke artists?", said Cyclones first baseman John-Erik Larsen, when someone asked him if he expected his club to defeat Oregon.

The fodder proved to be lockeroom material for the Emeralds. "We took that quote, highlighted it and posted it all over the place. Our guys took heed to the warning being sent. No one takes us seriously? Well, we showed them." said Dark Cloud.

Show them they did. New Jersey only won 2 games in the Series, both by a run. On the opposite side, the Emeralds POUNDED the New Jersey pitching staff, outscoring the Cyclones 53-14 in their four wins, en route to their first pennant in franchise history and a trip to their first WORLD SERIES.

"I'm happy, but I won't be satisfied until we can hold that trophy as World Series Champions", said Dark Cloud.

In the NLCS, the Phillies sent the Cubs to the beach winning the series in an easy 4 games to 1 fashion.

This setup the World Series matchup of the Philadelphia Phillies versus the Oregon Emeralds.

2008 WORLD SERIES

So, here were are Emeralds fans (yes, I know you're all fans...just fake it) in what many thought would never happened. The Ems are in the World Series. So, will it be a quick exit? Or will Oregon win the first elusive title in franchise history - which in case you're keeping score at home is in year 5.

GAME 1: Emeralds 3 Phillies 5
The first game in Emeralds World Series history isn't a good one. Brad Claussen gives up 4 earned runs in 6 2/3 innings, but despite a late rally, the Phils held on.
PHILLY LEADS SERIES 1-0

GAME 2: Emeralds 3 Phillies 7
Same story, different game. Pedro Martinez, no longer the dominant star he once was, showed it in this game as he gave up 4 earned in just three innings. Offense couldn't get jump-started and in the end, the Phils take a 2-0 lead in the series, as things shift to Portland.

GAME 3: Ems 5 Phillies 9
Wait, this can't be happening!?! We're down 3-0 to the x!?@) Phillies? Well, it is happening. Mark Kotsay had 4 RBI as the DH and helped lead the Phillies to a commanding 3-0 lead in the Series. Mark Prior got shelled giving up 7 earned in just 3 innings, bringing his playoff ERA to a fat 5.17. Can we get things going? I certainly hope so.

2008 WORLD SERIES

Back to the World Series action, folks.

In our last installment, the Ems dug a 3-0 hole in the World Series. Before the modern era, that would've meant the team was facing elimination. But with a best-of-nine series, the Ems had a shread of hope left. Would this be the first World Series with a 5 game sweep? Let's get back to the action....

GAME 4: Ems 15 Phillies 3
Well, when the Emeralds bats wake up, they certainly know how to make an entrance and make a point, eh? Everything clicked for the Ems, especially against their ace Nicholas Rank, who made short work of them in Game 1. Not only was Rank shelled for seven runs in 3 innings, the reliever Gavin Floyd who came on for him, gave up the same amount of runs in just 1 2/3 innings. Four Emeralds hit homers, including Xavier Paul who had 2 homers in the game.

Aaron Heilman pitched a solid 7 2/3 innings giving up 3 earned and striking out six. "We're glad that we woke up and smelled the coffee. We're not gonna get swept out of here." said Heilman after the win.

Rumor has it, Dark Cloud went into the locker room prior to the game and had a tirade. Some joked and said a "storm cloud" came in prior to the game that woke them up, but Dark Cloud just smiled after the game and said "the guys responded well today to critics. I'm pleased, but I know they're not done yet."

GAME 5: Emeralds 5 Phillies 3
A solid performance from Tim Hudson gave the Ems another win and their first in Philadelphia. Hudson struck out nine batters in eight innings. Former Emerald Jose Vidro had two doubles against his former club, while Kaz Matsui hit his seven dinger of a solo shot helping the Ems to pull within one game of tying the Series.

GAME 6: Emeralds 8 Phillies 4
The last game of the series in Philadelphia was a decisive one. The Ems knew a win here would change the face of the Series and give them a huge advantage going back to Portland for the last three games. "We knew we needed this one, really bad." said Brandon Claussen, who pitched six innings, giving up 2 earned runs and striking out nine.

Miguel Tejada had a triple and Vlad Guerrero (isn't this team loaded?!) had a double in the Emeralds win, to pull the Series even at 3 games apiece, as we shift to Portland and Paul Allen Stadium for the final games of the Series.

Can the Emeralds ride the momentum into a World Series title? Or will the Phillies pitching staff wake up and start shutting down the Ems again?

The answer...is next.

GAME 7 OF THE WORLD SERIES

WORLD SERIES GOES DOWN THE STRETCH
PORTLAND - There was a time, when Game 7 of the World Series meant a culmination and that someone would go home as a winner and the other, as a loser. In the Modern Era, this is no longer the case due to the best-of-nine format change. (Ironically, our season, with post-season will end on October 18th at the latest, can today's majors say that?)

The Oregon Emeralds came home to a field where announced attendance was 55,963. (Who were the 37 fans who were too dopey to come to the park for the series?!)

Pedro Martinez, the player many credit as changing the face of this franchise from expansion team to contender was on the mound. Fans in Oregon, early in his days with the club started a chant that was started as he walked off the field after six strong innings.

Announcer: Ladies and Gentleman....put your hands together for Fans: PEDRO MARTINEZ!!! ::cheers::

The atmosphere in Portland was electric and the Emeralds gave them plenty to cheer about. AL Batting Champion Jared Pressley and Miguel Tejada both had homers, Vlad Guerrero had two doubles and was named player of the game, as the Emeralds are just one game away from winning their first World Series in franchise history, after defeating the Phillies 11-3.

GAME 8 - 2008 WORLD SERIES

EMERALDS V. PHILLIES - PAUL ALLEN BALLPARK
PORTLAND - Game 8 of the World Series might have been a bore for you. After all, if you stopped tuning in after the sixth when Philly scored a run, you might have assumed that the 7-1 lead the Emeralds had would be good enough to win the World Series.

And you were right. But it almost wasn't. Because of a mangerial decision, Mark Prior was left out on the mound too long. Too long meaning Prior started to surrender hit after hit and gave up 5 runs in the top of the ninth to put the Phillies within one run, with runners in scoring position and two outs.

Prior had one more pitch left in him, that pop fly sealed the deal and the OREGON EMERALDS ARE YOUR 2008 WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS.

Down 3-0, they are the first team in the Modern Era to win five straight games in the World Series. They're the first team to come back after being down 3 games to 0 and this marks the first time in the modern era that either league has won consecutive titles, previously the title alternated between the two leagues.

"We're thrilled. I'm speechless", said Dark Cloud in a hoarse voice after the decisive victory. "Our fans are amazing, our players, they've been through so much and most of these guys have been here for years, they're had to endure so much scrutiny and commentary about the way we do business here. To get this win, its special. We're happy and I can't say anything else." he added.

Asked whether he expected to be back, he said, "Ask me tomorrow."

So there you have it fans. The OREGON EMERALDS clinch their first World Series title and Centurion has another title to its credit. Needless to say, this was much harder than any of the titles we've won previous to this league and that's to be appreciated.

Stay tuned for more on the Pacific Sports Network.

IN TYPICAL BASEBALL FASHION

BOARD OF GOVERNORS MEET TO SCREW STUFF UP
NEW YORK (AP) - In typical baseball fashion, no good thing can last too long. After a World Series with record highs in attendance and television ratings, baseball's Board of Governors met today as they traditionally do the first Monday after the World Series to discuss issues.

Some owners, despite the official plan that was passed just two years ago, want to expand sooner than 2015. "We are at an all-time high in attendance, our game is busting at the seams for expansion," said Tom Hart, owner of the Texas Rangers.

Other owners are opposed to early expansion, as it will decrease television profits. "We just did this and we're already trying to screw it up," said Dark Cloud, who opposes expansion until the settled dates. "I think we need to think long and hard about what we're trying to do here," he added.

Well, too bad. The Board of Governors voted 31-20 with 13 absentions to expand next season. The players supported the measure wholly, because it creates more jobs. "We have stars getting released because of the expansion of the game. There has to be a way to ensure they can still enjoy the game they've given so much to," said Player Chair David Cone.

A'S MOVE TO SACTO
SACRAMENTO - As rumored, the Oakland A's are leaving for greener (as in dollars) pastures. They will play next season in Sacramento, a television market that is in the Top 25 nationally. "We're happy to be going to a new place where our product will be valued and our fans will be rewarded with a facility that is top notch," said owner Steve Schott. The Sacramento A's will play their games at new Solaris Capital Field.

INDIANA ADOPTS NEW NICKNAME, STADIUM
INDIANAPOLIS - The Indiana Aeros officially changed their name to the Indiana Speed and hired Don Mattingly as their full-time manager. Mattingly, was originally hired as hitting coach, but was shortly hired as manager after Lou Pinella decided to retire. "I'm thrilled to work with these guys. I obviously never had the opportunity to play here at home, but these guys are going to bring the fans something special." said Mattingly.

The Speed will leave the RCA Dome and move into their own ballpark called Shopko Field.

EXPANSION CITIES?
This is the part where fan input really matters. (well, maybe) If the Modern Era expands, where do teams play?

Some cities like Tokyo are rumored, but some owners have cited a desire to have their very own "Green Bay Packers" of baseball, like moving a team to a small city. Perhaps more teams in the heartland or someplace in Mountain time like Wyoming, which has no major league sports?

Ideas?

NEW STADIUMS

CHASE MANHATTAN PARK
NEW YORK - Few teams that don't compete can ask their cities to spend $600 million on a new retractable roof stadium for their ballclub. Few teams however, are the New York Mets. Beating the Yankees to the punch, the Mets open Chase Manhattan Field this coming season, with their co-tenants the New York Jets, who come back over the river after shacking up with the Giants for too long.

"We're delighted to be coming back to New York", said Jets owner Louis Katz. The defending Super Bowl Champs will play their first home game at the park in October and fans couldn't be happier.

"I bought Mets and Jets season tickets!" said Mark Billings, a plumber from the Bronx. The Mets and Jets announced a television partnership as well yesterday. Starting this year, the teams will launch the NY SPORTS network. NY SPORTS will feature college, professional and other sports from the New York metro area. The channel will be broadcast nationally via cable and satellite provider, as well as their own internet content channel on the internet.

"We want to provide world class fans, with a world class option," said Mets owner Fred Wilpon. The deal will net the Mets an annual $35 million in local television revenue, when added to their other local contracts on network television, the deal will give the Mets $60 million in local television revenue.

"We want to be competitive and we're doing all we can to bring this team back where its fans expect." said Wilpon.

Sure you are, buddy.

I would love to see a team in North Dakota. Our closest team is about 7 hours away (Minneapolis). We don't have any home true teams to root for.

Great suff, Centurion. I love reading this stuff.

BOARD OF GOVERNORS REACH DEAL

EXPANSION TO BE STAGGERED
NEW YORK - The Board of Govenors reached a decision late last night in regards to expansion. They also agreed to realign the divisions.

The AL Northern goes away after just two years. The AL Central returns. The Boston Red Sox will return to the AL East, while the Indiana Racers will move to the AL Central.

2 NOW, 2 FOR LATER
Major League Baseball decided on its expansion plan. Instead of adding four teams in 2015, the league decided to add 2 now and the other two in 2015.

This staggered recipe, means that the clubs added today, will not be let in on the new television deal, as the deal was divided up for the 32 clubs, not 34 (or 36..) the vote of course was made before these folks got a vote. Instead, MLB has decided to take up a collection from all the money discarded at the end of the year (teams are only allowed to keep $25 mil - up to $30 mil next season) and give each of the expansion clubs $20 million in television revenue until the new television deal comes about.

In other words, ensuring no more Oregons or New Jerseys come out anytime soon.

"We're adding to the viability of the game with these new franchises", said Louisville White Sox owner Chuck Mcmurry. Sure Chuck, sure you are.

The new teams are for 2009 are:

Tokyo Aeros (Sony Field)
Orlando Tourists (Burger King Field)

Orlando's large TV market should provide the sport what it was lacking in Miami, "We're really happy to be able to bring major league baseball to Florida again", said owner Nick Cannon. Disney said it intended to use stars, who own 40% of the club, as cross-marketers and it also allowed them to get the best seats without having to bribe players.

Other co-owners of the Orlando club include Tiger Woods, a resident of Orlando and Shaquille O'Neal, who said he personally "hates" baseball, but that he lost his $12 million in a bet with Tiger on the golf course at Isleworth where they live and so he ended up with a stake in the club.

"Whatever man, they better not suck", he said gleefully.

In 2015, the two teams to be added will be the

Nevada Silverhawks, who will play at Silver Mountain Brewery Ballpark and one yet unnamed city. The Board has said they are still gauging options and will choose a site soon.

The two clubs to be added in 2015 will play in the NL, while this year's clubs will be in the AL.

To complete the realignment, Cleveland will move to the Central, Baltimore will move back to the East. Orlando will play in the South and Tokyo will play in the Pacific division.

The team will play at Burger King Field aka The Whopper.

Glad you're enjoying. I'm strongly considering a move like this. In the past, I've had teams in the Dakotas (Dakota Thundercats), but we'll see. It'd be more likely I'd move a team there, rather than actually expanding there though, because of the whole TV contract thing.

No doubt whatever I do, it'll be interesting.

A Caribbean team is the next logical step.

As for the small market club, I dunno. There are few teams left that I would consider moving, but ultimately...well, there are five years to consider what's gonna happen there. Expect twists and turns.

As you can see, I get bright ideas a lot. Kinda like those brainacks who decided to make the All-Star game count.

NEW ENGLAND WHITECAPS NEAR BANKRUPTCY

WHITECAPS INSOLVENT, LORIA A MORON
PORTLAND, ME - The New England Whitecaps, despite turning over $30 million in profit this past season, are on the brink of bankruptcy. Owner Jeffrey Loria, packed up his team and took them closer to Montreal, figuring he could tap into the Boston TV market. While fans attend games - attendance was over 2 million again this season - the fact is, the Whitecaps have the lowest rate of "impressions" or supporting fans in their market.

"The problem is, the Sox are there and they've been there a long time. This new team, that's not successful can come into a situation and try to take over a fan base. Its just not happening," said baseball economist Dr. Joe Peterson of the University of Maine, Farmington.

Because of the lack of impressions, the team appeals to fans who otherwise can't get into Fenway Park to watch games. "We go to the park a few times a year. Its a nice chance to see the NL teams and we figure, if we can't get into Fenway, we can get into the ballpark", said Joe and Margaret Palmer, of Durham, N.H.

When asked if they were fans, a recent survey polled 28% of New Englanders as "true" Whitecaps fans. These individuals said they attended at least 10 games a year and watched the club on television when they didn't go to games.

Loria, expecting to create a mega network with the Sox, has been disappointed with the chilly response he's recieved from his former business partners since moving his club. Some have rumored the two have had words on a number of occasions for so-called "enchroachment".

Despite being a two-team city for a long team, most have complained that the Whitecaps are not the Boston Braves and the fact that the club has not had a winning season since it moved, has done little to endear the fans to their new team. "Well, if they were better, surely other people would care. Maybe the kids would. But most older fans are Sox fans and will be until they die," said Paul Midely, a plumber from Boston.

Because of this, Major League baseball is rumored to be quietly seeking an alternative location to sell the club and get Loria out of baseball. It has started a clandestine program called "Bring the majors to your hometown", as an initiatve to bring one community club into the league, rather than as an expansion franchise.

"We have no comment", said one owner. Despite this, MLB is seeking other options and has narrowed its choices to locations in the Mountain region. "We think the best bet would be to have a team in a location that can adopt this club as its own. We're tired of dealing with this and since the club has had a transient past, it would be important to get it someplace where there isn't much else going on and this could redefine its area." said a source close to MLB.

An official announcement is expected shortly.
