Armstrong was a physically gifted athlete with a sparring partner mentality. He often appeared intimidated by his opponents and performed poorly as in his two draws and 1 loss to Ed Dunkhorst, who was chiefly known for his noticeable girth, as well as KO losses to mediocre Pete Everett and middleweight Joe Butler. When he was focused and got himself fired up, he could put up a good showing, as he did against Denver Ed Martin in their first meeting.
