They are secretly coded if their name is one of the following:
Babe Ruth Shohei Ohtani |

They show up as two-way on the profile if they have their game strategy set to be used as a two-way player.
The AI will set that strategy if they have hitting and pitching potential. Some cases they may skip that (ie. Babe Ruth for part of his career is too good a hitter to waste him in the pen). |

They have a separate rest status as a hitter and a pitcher.

How can you see if someone is "set to be a two-way player"? Is there a special designation? Is there a box to click in the editor?

It's in the game strategy, along with the settings to bench a guy for X days or lock to a minor league level. Otherwise you can see on the profile page if they list both a batting and pitching position.

Okay, so I don't know where you are referring to. Here is a two way player from my league. I have been playing him as both a SP and a CF since I drafted him. It only lists him as a CF. In previous games, I have just been switching him back and forth, but I thought the two way player thing would make it so I didn't have to do that.
(by the way, I didn't name him that...the game literally gave him that name) Last edited by Rosco Peabody; 09-13-2018 at 09:47 PM. |

If you go to the actions menu on him, if he's on your team, you should be able to "Set Game Strategy". Then on that page, there's a button to set him as a two way player and you'll get a slightly different view for him and he should work both ways without having to change his position.

I was all prepared to come make a post about this, expressing my concern over leaving it up to the AI and worrying about the possibility of two-way players becoming too common. But then I noticed that in the league options under "General AI Roster Settings" there's a checkbox for "Allow two-way players". Bravo, OOTP devs.
One suggestion, tho: maybe extend this to also being a team-by-team setting? Same as "Allow AI roster changes" and "Allow beards for team members"? Because maybe I have a generational talent who I want to experiment with as a two-way player, but I don't trust the AI not to start doing the same thing with theirs, and before you know it there's 10 of 'em in the league at the same time... :/ |

Is there an easy way to search for two-way players?

Still hoping this'll also get added to the individual team pages, so we can enable it for the league but disable it for some/all of the AI teams.

Looks like the computer only uses two way players as SP and something else.

I think they mentioned that if the player turns out to be a lot better at one than the other the AI will (probably correctly) decide not to use them as a two-way. If a guy is an every day player offensively it doesn't make sense to try to use them as a RP, for instance. I would hope there is still a chance they could be used as both a bench player and a RP though.

A guy could be an every day player and a closer. In the last inning, someone else would take over the defensive position, and the two way closer would warm up then come in to pitch.
I have a player who, if I set his stamina to even 40, is used as a SP and OF. If I set his stamina to 20, the AI places him in the closer slot but never inserts him into a game as a pitcher. |

If the game puts him as a closer and doesn't use him, that is definitely an issue. The logistics on that seem tough though. When/where does he warm up?

His team finishes batting, he's already warm and loose from playing in the game. He takes his pitches on the mound. |

I don't think that is enough time for most pitchers to warm up. Throwing on the mound is much different than throwing in the outfield or wherever between innings. I'm not saying that it couldn't be done...it is just a logistical nightmare in most situations. You would have to have a pitcher who could get warm extremely quickly and playing 9 innings before pitching isn't going to put him at his best in most cases.
