Question on setting

I have never been able to find a good explanation for what the Talent Change Randomness setting controls. It has the parameters of (100=Average, 1=Minimum, 200=Maximum), but I can't find anything in the manual in regards to just what this means or controls?

My guess has been that if you set it lower, say 50, players stay more true to their ratings and expected production as they progress, with less ups and downs? And if you set it higher, 150 or 200, players may improve or decline more drastically than their ratings would indicate?

Can anyone give me a good explanation for this?

You have the same belief I do. I don't know whether it affects the raw # of players that change or whether the same number of players change to a greater degree.

For example, it could mean that 200 players either exceed or go below their initial potential ratings by 20% or it could mean that 50 players exceed or go below their initial potential ratings by 100%.

I've seen the talent change randomness make absolute superstars out of anonymous players when I go into commissioner mode. I'm talking raw ratings of 160-180 in multiple categories.

I don't think TCR controls the size of the jump. It just controls how often players make a jump.

Higher TCR means more likelihood that player ability and potential will make a very sudden change. Lower means they'll stay more like their potential when they entered the game.

Look at it like this. When a player enters the game, he has a 'true' potential. He also has a potential rating from scouts, which has some scatter about the true value. He will develop along this path based on the normal factors in the game.

Now, the player gets hit with TCR. His 'true' potential changes. Scouts take a little bit to catch up and 'see' the change. Usually, the 'best players ever' in my games are people who seem to have been hit with several TCR's.

In my understanding, players who are already very good have a lower chance of getting hit with TCR that makes them even better. But it can still happen. A dev posted this once, though I don't remember where.

TCR can also take a good player in his prime and make him worse.

One last way to look at TCR, is if you want to see more players from later draft rounds make it to the majors and become all-stars, turn TCR up. If you want the draft to be pretty predictable, with the only source of scatter being due to scouting, turn TCR down.

Good explanation. For that reason I keep it at 100. When it's higher than that it feels like the draft is pure luck. It's already like throwing darts at a board as it is, but TCR is like changing the layout of the points after the darts have already hit the board.

High # - more likely to be talent changes - eg: Top prospects turn out to be duds, there's more Mike Piazza types

Low # - less likely to be talent changes - eg: Top prospects/picks will be more likely to remain top prospects/players, less Piazza types (late picks coming out of no where to be all stars)

Normal talent changes will still occur of course - as a guy gets older, he'll slowly lose his talent. (there are settings to control how fast/slow that happens also)

Myself I play fictional and mostly I don't care for a lot of talent changes so I use 50. It's a personal choice thing though.

Still looking for the sweet spot for myself.

I used 135 for a while, currently on 150, but I think it's a bit too high for my taste.

I set it at 50, although I'm thinking about going up to 75 from now on. I don't like having 1st rounders turn into pumpkins, and I never seemed to have as many pumpkins turn into stars. YMMV.
