Curious on how you are doing in tournaments...
I realize it's extremely early, but I thought I would share my results so-far and see if it (1) lines up with other's experiences and (2) tells us anything about what we expected.
So far, I've entered about 12 tournaments and won 1. The one I won was an all-historical tournament with my P-Level all-historical team - but I lost 5 others in the process. My winnings were 500pp. The other 6 tournaments were a mix of Gold, Silver and Bronze teams. With a 168 teams in the event, there isn't much chance of winning those unless you have a juggernaut team. I guess my initial conclusion is what many suspected - the strongest teams in PT will also be the strongest teams in the tournaments. Team owners who have invested heavily in regular PT will do well in tournaments, and may also invest in the lower levels to do well there as well. That said, however, the reduced number of games could get you a few wins that you wouldn't be able to get in a season long environment. |

The teams in everything but the open tournaments (or diamond if those run) are very close to the same strength. It does not seem reasonable to expect to win the whole thing much more often than 1/16, 1/32, etc.
Ive won a couple 8 teamers and a 16 I think, then have a good handful of 2nds and semifinals in 16ers, maybe a deep run or two in a giant 64 or 128 man. Last edited by dkgo; 11-13-2019 at 11:18 AM. |

had time yesterday to try out a bunch of the 8 and 16 team open tourneys.... best finish was the semi finals... typically found at least one team head and shoulders above the rest, though they didn't always come out on top (as anything can happen in those short series)...
got in a bunch of silver/bronze tourneys as well but got distracted by the 'this way to the egress' sign and made a quick exit fun to put those inactive/reserve cards to use, even if they haven't returned any prizes yet.... |

On paper. But we all know the right mix of cards and proper strategy can make a world of difference... and with capped tournaments, there's even more strategy involved.

I don't think there is a big difference once you are past the "not obviously terrible" baseline which most users are, but if someone out there is winning a quarter of the 16 man restricted tournaments they enter I would be very impressed. Everyone else's Kyle Tucker seems to hit better than mine in silver so I'm hoping that turns around soon lol.
The cap tournaments are a different beast though with so many options. Hoping that the bug where people can just go over the cap to win is fixed soon and I will look forward to joining them. |

Finished 2nd in two, one paid out 3k, the other paid out disappointment (nothing). My plan to dominate the silver events hasn't apparently been thought all the way through.

I've been in a lot of silvers, they are tough to get an edge. Looking through some boxscores you can tell most people know the same "undervalued" cards, but maybe there is a different way to attack them.

Open-Historical: 23 entered, 5 won, 1 2nd, 7 3rd/4th, total 13 of 23 winning something.
Gold-Historical: 1 entered, didn't win, gave up the restricted types |

Teams doing well in regular PT are bound to do pretty well in (especially certain) tournaments but there should be some teams that do well particularly in tournaments. If you look at all the different formats of the tournaments, the PT seasons in a sense are one format...so some players will do better in tournaments of their choice than in seasons & vice-versa. I don't know what I just wrote. In a nutshell, I expect there will be some "tournament specialists" in addition to the teams doing well in "Regular PT". Hey, Ralph Kiner!

Not too bad... I made some mistakes at first, like not setting up my Strategy and ballpark, assuming it would carry over from my normal settings...
That said, I've played a few and won a few, but only really faced one good team that I can remember (Orcin's) and I think we're 1-1 in Historical tourneys. Mostly just testing the waters and figuring out what pitching setup works best for 16-32 and 64 teams.

We can change the ballpark factors? This wasn't supposed to be the case. Granted, I didn't even look for it, as I was too busy searching (fruitlessly) for a way to change back to my preferred color schemes...

I did.... it changed, but not sure if it sticks, mainly because I'm not sure if these are even in home parks to begin with.

I placed 2nd in one tourney. I THOUGHT I had the best possible All Gold Team going, have been in Perfect for many seasons and even made it to a WS last week and lost in Game 7 to a far, superior team.
That said, this same team SUCKS in tournaments. The only thing I could surmise and have changed my lineups, is that I had several "trained" players playing positions that they lose their training for. So my outfield was all out of position players and I am not sure if that was affecting how poorly I was doing so I have tried changing some things up in my lineups... |

I’ve played about 36 mostly 8 team tourneys so far. I got 2nd place once. Usually it just says “eliminated”.

That said, the gold, silver, bronze, and iron tourneys should function as a bit more of a Wild West. If one is losing in a bunch of low level tournaments, it could be bad luck or just bad strategy/bad method for selecting cards. Doing well in lower tier tournaments has nothing to do with level of investment because all of these cards are pretty easily accessible to any garden variety F2P player. Most F2P teams are already loaded with these types of cards. I think the point about sample size is valid. It's much harder to surpass a much better team over 162 games than in a round robin, single elimination, or best of 3/5/7. So, even the "open" tournaments are more egalitarian than the "season-mode" PT. What are you, some kind of comedian?

Yep I'll play around with these now and then but tournies aren't my cup of tea. I'm already maxed out trying to run 3 different teams on two licenses as it is. The strategies that are being employed by teams that are successful in the tournies I have been in don't compute with my brain. Happy it's here though as it seems to have busied the AH a bit...

Took down a 32 man Bo5/7 open. Lot of good teams in there but so far I'm benefiting from my OCD of only using players in the position listed on the card while other teams still have nonsense like wade boggs at second base.

My problem with the smaller cards is that I've gotten rid of them by Quick Sale or AH. I keep the good ones that play well everywhere. 1 Tourney I joined I went ahead a bought a mess of lower rated cards to play. It's just plain fun to play tourneys..period...I've won 2 of of about 20.... |
