If I Create A Historical Game, Can I Modify The Team Abbreviations?

When I create a historical game the team abbreviations clearly come from the Lahman Database (or, perhaps Retrosheet).

Are these database keys that if modified will screw up accessing the data as the league progresses, or is it OK to modify without doing so?

Example, I don't want WS2 to be the abbreviation for the Washington Senators of 1961, I want it to be WAS.

If you click the little wrench at the bottom right of the screen once you're in the game there are separate fields for "Abbreviation" and "Historical Team ID" (and "Historical Franchise ID.") So changing just the abbreviation shouldn't break anything.

The main purpose of these is when you're playing historical and having real players come in the league each year. If you want players assigned to their real teams, these abbreviations must not be changed.

If you're not having players assigned to real teams or not using real players, then changing them won't hurt you.

If you have your league set to follow real evolution, then when a team moves or joins, you may have to update them again.

Thanks for the answers. If I understand them, the Team Abbreviations in setup are OK to change without affecting anything, but the Team ID must not be changed or it will cause problems with expansion and player assignements.

If that's correct, that's all I need. If it's not, I'd appreciate correction.
