We are in Sacramento to play the Solons a 4 game series. They lost 3 of 4 in Seattle over the weekend. We are 6-4 against them on the season and won 2 of 3 the first time we were here, August 26-28. They are 12th in scoring in the PCL with 3.90 runs per game (Portland is still #1 with 4.79). They are 14th in fewest runs allowed with 4.77 per game (Portland is now #1 with 3.35!). We have allowed 3 fewer runs than Kansas City. Oh! I would love to finish the season with the best offense and the best defense in the League! Sacramento's run differential is -134 and ours is +224.

P Jorge Vela, 1 for 37 on the season, is now 2 for 38... Ralph McKinney doubles to right. With the infield in, Paul Moreland grounds out to 2nd and the runners hold. Dennis Rayner grounds out to 1st, unassisted, and the runners hold... Jim Holberton flies out to deep center!!!

Bottom of the Fourth:

Larry Pierce leads of with a triple grounded down the left field line... His 1st of the season... Mario Vasquez lines out to center and Pierce tags up and gets himself thrown out at the plate by Jack Hinckley!!!

Top of the Fifth:
Tin Higbee leads off with a double to left center. But the next three make outs... 1 run off a pitcher with an ERA on the wrong side of 5....

Top of the Sixth:
With 1 out, Juan Rojas grounds a ball over the 1st base bag for a double. With 2 outs, they walk Glenn Snowden intentionally. Fernando Mexicano lines a hit to right center and the bases are loaded with 2 outs. Tim Higbee draws a walk to force in a run! 2 to 0, Beavers! Jack Hinckley grounds out to 2nd...

Bottom of the Sixth:
Paul Moreland leads off with yet another double to center... The Bullpen is up. Dennis Rayner smokes a liner back to the box and P Steve Muir snares it while just trying to protect his face!! He is so happy that his mug is not broken that he does no think to look to 2nd base.... Jim Holberton lines one to deep left, but Jose Julio makes a leaping catch at the warning track!! Larry Pierce grounds out to short!!

After retiring us in order in the 7th, P Jorge Vela's ERA is no longer on the wrong side of 5....

Bottom of the Ninth:

P Steve Muir is a 96 pitches. With 1 out, Larry Pierce loops a hit to right. Mario Vasquez doubles to right... Eddie Dyer grounds out to 3rd and Pierce scores. 2 to 1, Beavers. 2 outs. PH Bob Swanson (32-L), batting .244 with 5 HR in 254 is sent up. Now, I could go to the Pen here, but then if that fella gives up a hit and the tying tun scores, P Muir will lose his chance at 20 wins and blame that pitcher for the rest of his life... So, since this game means nothing to anybody but P Steve Muir, we will let him lose it himself.... Swanson sends one to deep left center, but not deep enough and Jose Julio catches it and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers!

Trudy's report on Roy Huls is a mild calf strain that should be fine in a few days. I hope he can make it through the postseason in one piece so we can trade him when he is healthy and not when he is hurt.

Around the League:
Detroit won at Atlanta, 5 to 2, to earn a split in their series. With the Indians idle, Detroit and Cleveland are now tied for the NL West division lead with 3 games to play. We are in Oakland to play a 3 game series over the weekend and finish out the regular season. They just split 4 games here with San Francisco, though they outscored the Seals, 24 to 8. We are 8-3 against them on the season and won 2 games the last time we were here, August 11-12. There were 4 totals runs scored in those 2 games by both teams in 21 innings. They are 9th in scoring in the PCL with 3.99 runs per game (Portland is #1 with 4.74). We have scored 3 more runs than Denver, but the Bears are finishing the season in Coors, the easiest place to score in Baseball and we are finishing up in the Coliseum, on of the toughest places to score, so it looks like our dream of finishing 1st in both runs and fewest runs allowed is not going to come to fruition. The Oaks are also 9th in fewest runs allowed with 4.24 per game (Portland is #1 with 3.30). Their pitchers have allowed the fewest HR in the PCL (79). Ours have allowed the 3rd fewest (98). Their run differential is -40 and ours is +230. We are not slouching in this series; we want home field advantage in the PCL Championship Series and are right now 1 game up on the Eagles.

Portland Beavers (98-61 .616 Champions of the PCL West) at
Oakland Oaks (76-83 .478 22 GB tied for 5th place in the PCL West)

POR: Bruce Ancona (23-L 6-7 3.50) Rookie vs. OAK: Emilio de la Torre (26-R 3-13 6.90)

Ancona got lit up by Hollywood for 5 runs and 9 hits in 3.2 IP last time out and took the loss. He had won his previous 3 starts before that. He has 1 shutout this season and that came right here in Oakland.

De la Torre is 0-6 in his last 7 starts. He gave up 4 runs in 7 IP last time out and lost. He is 0-2 in 3 starts versus the Beavers this season and has not had a good game yet.

Lost - 5 to 3

Dallas got shutout at Minnesota, 2 to 0, so we still have a 1 game edge for home field advantage. Denver won at home versus Milwaukee, 6 to 5, in 10 innings and have tied us for the most runs scored in the PCL.

Alex Uriegas doubles to left. Call to the Bullpen: Denny Jennissen (30-R). With 1 out, Al Burrell hits a home run to left center... 6 to 3, Oaks. We suck...

Lost - 6 to 3

Seven straight games of 3 runs or fewer...

We had 8 hits and made 3 errors
Oakland had 11 hits and made no errors

Bill Woodward went 5.1 innings, allowed 2 runs (1 earned), 8 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4. 97 pitches.
RHP Roy Huls faced 1 batter and got 2 outs.
RHP Rich Larkin (L 2-4) went 1 inning, allowed 3 runs (2 earned). 2 hits, 1 home run, 1 walk and struck out 2.
RHP Denny Jennissen went 1 inning, allowed 1 run, 1 hit, a home run and struck out 1.

Scotti Barden (W 1-2) went 9 innings (CG), gave us 3 runs, 8 hits, 1 home run, 2 walks and struck out 4. 112 pitches. At bat, he had a hit.

RF A.J. Lee hit a triple, drew a walk and scored a run. SS Reid Reddick had 2 hits with his 9th home run and drew a walk. PH Oscar Trejo hit a double and had an RBI.

For Oakland, LF Javy Puente had 3 hits, stole 2 bases, scored a run and had an RBI.

Around the League:
Detroit lost at Miami, 9 to 0, and Cleveland won at Chicago, 3 to 2, in 10 innings, so the Indians and Tigers are tied atop the NL West with 1 game to play. The Cubs are eliminated with the loss. Atlanta won at home versus St. Louis, 5 to 2, so they are still alive, 1 game back.

Dallas shutout Minnesota, 2 to 0, so we are tied with them now, but they hold he tiebreaker with a better record against us.

Denver scored 4 runs, so they are now 1 run ahead of us in scoring...

Also, Clay Laurence of San Francisco hit hitting in the last week of the season and Glenn Snowden is not, so Laurence will be the MVP, I am pretty certain....

Final game of the regular season.

Portland Beavers (98-63 .609 Champions of the PCL West) at
Oakland Oaks (78-83 .484 20 GB in 5th place in the PCL West)

POR: Bobby Johnson (24-R 14-10 2.55) vs. OAK: Greg Ware (27-L 17-13 2.33) 2-time All-Star(02-03)

We are pitching Johnson, instead of holding him back for the postseason, because we want home field advantage and we want him to get 15 wins and 250+ innings. He pitched a 6 hit shutout last time out, snapping a personal 3 game losing streak.

Ware is their #1 starter. He is probably the favorite for the Cy Young Award, since voters don't care much about won-loss records anymore (much to my chagrin). We need to pummel him today to give Frank Flores a chance, but the way we are hitting, there seems to be little chance of that. He has won his last 3 starts, pitching a 4 hit CG against the Seals last time out, allowing just 1 run. We faced him once and he beat us, giving us 3 runs in 6 IP.

We are in Dallas to play the first two games of the PCL Championship Series. They finished they season winning 2 of 3 in Minnesota while we were being swept in Oakland and took the home field advantage away from us. We were only 2-6 against them on the season and lost all 4 games played in Texas. They were 6th in the PCL in scoring with 713 runs (Portland ended up 2nd with 760). Our offensive numbers are very similar with the main difference being that we batted 10 points higher, but they walked more often, so that our OBP was only 2 points better than theirs. The Eagles were 3rd in fewest runs allowed with 552 (Portland was #1 with 541). Their pitchers led the League in ERA (2.99); ours were 3rd (3.07). Our fielding was much better. They made the 2nd most errors in the League (151); we had the 3rd fewest (123) and our DEF and ZR were much better than theirs. Their run differential was +161 (2nd best in Baseball) and ours was +219. I think they are the clear favorite given the head to head record and the way each team finished the season. Whichever of these teams makes it to the World Series should be the favorite to win it all.

Pacific Coast League Championship Series

Portland Beavers (1-0 Champions of the PCL West) at
Dallas Eagles (0-1 Champions of the PCL East)

Game 2
POR: Bobby Johnson (24-R 14-11 2.60) vs. DAL: Tommy Harrison (24-R 14-15 3.12)

Johnson ended the season losing 4 of his last 5 starts, but I still think he is our best pitcher, even though Flores and Muir ended up with 20 wins apiece.

Harrison has been a tough luck pitcher down the stretch. He finished 2-7 in his last 9 starts, but his ERA went down during the stretch. We faced him once and won, but he went 8 innings and gave us 4 runs (1 earned).
