Ruben "Streak" Souffront now a Wild Thing!

The Portland Wild Things signed 30-year old right fielder, and former Brewer, Ruben Souffront to a 2-year contract today. Ruben had a very solid 1974 while playing for 2 teams- the Columbus Whalers and the Charlotte Sting- and still possesses top of the line speed and good contact hitting skills.

Okay, granted, Kasey O'Neill is a star, one of the finest third baseman in the game. And he's not a bad guy, either. (Though rumor has it that he might be a bit greedy.) And Malcolm Jones has a chance to be a big league third baseman in a few years and has great leadership skills. Even relief pitcher T.J. Cook, at age 35, isn't horrible and is considered a really great guy.

But Joe McPhillips. No, he's off limits. And the timing was great too. Joe turned 26 today. So maybe this was a good thing. It reminded us that we had better send a message to the league about what Joe means to our organization. On his 26th birthday we give him this gift: Joe McPhillips is now considered untouchable.

1975 Spring Training storylines

With the first Spring Training exhibition game now in the books for the Brewers (a grueling 16-inning loss to Oklahoma City), everyone in Brewer nation starts looking forward with anticipation to the upcoming regular season.

There aren't many question marks for the Brewers that need to be answered in the exhibition season. Of course, injuries could complicate that. But mostly the 25-man roster is set and looks a great deal like last season's championship team. With the addition, of course, of Japanese right-handed starter Sadahige Kawasaki.
One interesting thing to watch though is the apparent emergence of fellow Japanese righty Sekien Hamasaki as a legitimate contender for at least a back-end of the rotation slot. Hamasaki, who was an international free agent signed by Detroit prior to the 1974 season, was traded to the Brewers mid-season and mostly pitched for AAA Chester last season and then got some more seasoning in the Arizona Fall League, where he led the league in ERA, strikeouts, K/9, and WAR. And now in the pre-season the Brewers scouting staff are fairly high on the durable ground-baller. With the continuing decline of Harry Lyerly's stock (the OOTP thread title curse?) and Justin Peacock looking less and less like a viable rotation candidate, Hamasaki has a chance to stake a claim on the 5th slot in the rotation, competing with Matt Helm. John Weaver, the 22-year old top pitching prospect for the Brewers, who is expected to start the season in AAA, is also with the big leaguers in camp to get a taste of the WPK culture and competition. Weaver profiles as having a ceiling as a 5th starter, but is as hard a worker as they come and sparks his teammates to play harder, and having just turned 22 in late December has plenty of time still to exceed his current perceived potential.

Speaking of the starting rotation, rumor has it that the Brewers are currently in talks with left-handed veteran Erik Sloan to extend him for at least a handful more years. The thought is that this was a directive of the owner, but the general consensus is that it's the right thing to do with Sloan continuing to be a solid investment with great control as well as being a fan favorite for his great work ethic, keen intelligence, and unwavering loyalty to his team.

Joe Brodeur and league expansion

Bird,

Please keep track over the next few years of that filthy Joe stinking Brodeur cheater and his batting ratings. I am very curious how OOTP handles players getting busted for peds. Do they begin to lose power or any other ratings at any point after being caught? Being as he is a young player we should get an idea by watching his losses.

Big caveat for you regarding the expansion and this is one of the reasons why it's suggested that league evolution is not used. There may not be a schedule that matches the changed league structure. I will look to see if I can find a schedule that matches, if not we may have to either make one or have one made. FYI anytime you make a change to ANY league structure (including minor leagues when expansion happens) you have to generate a new schedule for each level that has changed. Also the league evolution will NOT create the divisions for you. It only offers league expansion by adding teams. So you will need to do that. Also, and kind of important, most likely the next expansion (which could come soon or take decades) will put the next two teams in the MJL, but there is a chance that they could be placed in the SJL.

My suggestion is to shut off league evolution. When you are ready, add the divisions and when you are ready to expand (do so on the first day of the off season) do so (but when you manually expand make sure that you you expand each teams minor league teams also). Of course don't forget to generate a new schedule when you do this for each level (MLB, AAA, AA, A etc.). I know the schedule(s) exist for the 24 team, 2 sub-league, 2 division, 6 team league so you will be fine when you get to that point.

Think about it.

BTW congrats on landing Kawasaki!

Have a good night!

So, even before this PED suspension, I wondered if Brodeur might not end up being a bit of a flash in the pan due to his character flaws. Interestingly, although he had a very strong 1974, his HR total was way down from his MVP 1973 season. He dropped from hitting a league leading 41 in 1973 to just 16 in 1974. And his WAR dropped from 10.2 to 6.5. Don't get me wrong, he is still one of the best players in the SJL. But I do also wonder if, with his lack of natural speed, his defense in left field, which right now is quite good, might decline rapidly as he ages. Granted, he could shift to first base, but his basic infield defensive ratings are very, very bad. And my experience with the WPK at least has been that poor makeup guys don't tend to stay at the top very long, although Jamel McNeil is an exception. Admittedly, there is no indication yet that Brodeur's work ethic is poor, mostly just that he's a bad teammate and not very bright. But I will definitely keep you all posted about his progression.

Now, as for league evolution and expansion. First, league evolution in general- I really would love to continue to use it, with some features disabled. Unlike many who post here, I don't want to have much control over how my league progresses, other than being able to rein some things in to not get too overboard in any one direction, particularly in terms of statistical results. But, as I've indicated before, I love the idea of not really knowing what's coming next and having to adjust to that.

But expansion. I assume when you refer to the potential scheduling problems that those come with manual expansion and/or manual restructuring of the league. I was a bit worried about whether schedules were created for expansion clubs and particularly their minor league affiliates, but so far all looks good. I am guessing the program can handle this providing I just let it do it's thing.
So what to do about the next step? I hear what you are saying about just shutting this down and doing it manually when I am ready (it meaning adding 2 more franchises and restructuring the league to a divisional setup with 6 teams each division). I guess my instinct is still to play this out for at least a few seasons and see how quickly the program adds another 2 teams. And then hope they get added to the MGL. And then figure out whether I want to live with two 12 team leagues, no divisions, or figure out/get help with splitting into a divisional setup.
I'll admit that some of this might be laziness or perhaps more accurately a concern that the more I muck about with things the worse things could become. I don't want league evolution to ruin my beloved league, true, but even more so I don't want my reaction to it, or my desire for some specific kind of change, to do so. And my experience with OOTP thus far tells me that I'm usually pretty happy with how things work out when I don't try to force things.

For now, I'll keep thinking about it. And as always, I really do appreciate your input and feedback- and the fact that you so avidly follow this league- so please don't think I am blowing you off or disrespecting your advice. That is the farthest from the truth. But I am a very intuitive person and in my life I've often found that when I don't follow my own instincts things often go very poorly.

Confusion

Bird,

I am sorry man, somewhere along the line our lines got crossed and either I did not explain things well enough or somehow you misinterpreted what I said or maybe both. Either way now I understand at least one part of the confusion. It sounds like you thought I was advocating for you to totally shut of league evolution altogether. I did not mean that at all. I was refering to just unclicking the expansion box under the league evolution heading. I have no problem at all with the rest of the options. I know how you like to do things and/or not do things. Go crazy Bird!

I hope that you know that I have only the best intentions at heart for you and the WPK when I make suggestions. I certainly don't wish to come across as forceful or trying to make you do something you don't want to do with the league. My intention with this expansion thing is save you from potential problems that could compound in the future. I have had these things happen to me and have read some real crappy stories that players have dealt with over the years and would spare you these types of headaches especially if as I suspect (I could be wrong. It IS possible) and if I have calculated you right you would prefer a smaller league to a larger one. Am I right? With a smaller league it is easier to maintain a grasp on players, goings ons, stories, etc. It feels more "family-ish" more comfortable. As the league gets larger it becomes SO much harder to keep track of everything and becomes so much less comfortable, cozy etc. If I AM wrong (God forbid) and you are interested in the WPK growing to 30, 32 or even larger let me know. I have a much better idea than using league evolution - expansion.

So hopefully we have cleared that up and are better for it.

Have a Great day!

Well, small to begin with anyway. While I was getting immersed in this league I certainly wanted to start small, feeling it would be easier to get to know the league and its players from the beginning if it was on the smaller size.
But I'm open to it growing larger over time. Within limits, probably. So that is why I am thinking that a move up to 24 teams total in the next few years (if that is what happens) would be good. And then I would probably shut off the possibility of expansion for at least a time while I study the idea more and maybe even see if there are any improvements from the OOTP development team along the way. In the long run if the league grows to the same size as current MLB, I am pretty sure I could work with that too.

Erik Sloan inked to 5-year extension by Brewers!

It was announced today that the Denver Brewers have reached agreement with veteran left-handed starter Erik Sloan on a 6-year extension of his contract with the team. Sloan, one of the most popular players in the game and a darling of the Denver fan-base, was due to be eligible for free agency at the end of the season but is now under contract through the 1981 season, when he will be 36-years old.

Sloan came to the Brewers in a mid-season deal in 1972 and at the end of that season received the MGL Pitcher of the Year honors. He specializes in the screwball and is known for his great command and while his stuff isn't what it used to be, he uses his guile and great baseball intelligence to remain a very solid mid-rotation starter.

Spring Training Exhibition game, Week 1

A few notes at the end of the first week of the 1975 Spring Training exhibition schedule:

Team Record: 4-3.

Who's Hot: Let's take a quick look at Zach Cook. Cook was the 4th round pick of the Brewers in 1969 draft (the same draft that brought them Joe Willemse, but little else in the way of quality players) and Cook has never been considered a premium prospect in the organization. But quietly he has moved up the ladder with modest success and a good reputation as a team leader. Then last season he had something of a breakout year at AAA Chester, hitting 18 HR's and putting up a 4.2 WAR season. In the first week of the spring training games it appears that Cook is motivated to get Brewers management's attention. He is off to a hot start with the bat and as expected is very solid in the field. Cook profiles with plus speed and good base-stealing and base-running skills, and is a very fine outfielder, particularly in right field. He has a good approach at the plate but his overall hit skills are merely average. Our scouting staff still sees him as an average big leaguer, but with the Brewers strong outfield average isn't likely to earn him a job. Still, he's certainly making the case that if a 5th outfielder is needed at some point during the season, he is the one to call on.
Name: Screenshot (163).jpg
Views: 173
Size: 181.2 KB

Who's not: Kirk Patnode should be useful to the team with his tremendous defensive skills behind the plate, but having been given the back-up job behind Zacarias Martell with veteran Kevin Curtis now a member of the expansion Houston Cavaliers, Patnode has looked over-matched at the plate thus far this Spring.

Injuries: The Brewers have stayed mostly healthy thus far though they did lose Zacarias Martell for a few games when he suffered a bruised thigh while running the bases.

Insult: Joe Willemse has come up with a few key hits in the first week of the exhibition season but the normally steady (and sometimes spectacular) defender also made two very costly errors in a single game.

Spinners sign Kuykendall

The Los Angeles Spinners today announced the signing of 36-year old first baseman Nate Kuykendall to a 1-year deal. Not too many years ago Kuykendall was one of the premiere power hitters in the league. But many question the value of the Spinners signing the 36-year old, 255-pound defensive liability who is one of the slowest players in the league, has sub-par contact skills, put up 1.4 WAR in 1973 and -0.1 WAR this past season, and is not considered a positive clubhouse influence.
Name: Capture 333.PNG
Views: 158
Size: 332.6 KB

On the other hand, Kuykendall still has a very good eye at the plate and can still run into some pitches and hit them a very long way. With a talented young first baseman on the Spinners in the person of Edwin Ayala, Kuykendall will likely spend most of his time sitting on the bench, and given that the perception is that he still considers himself a starter, very possibly he will do so with a dark cloud over his head.

1975 Spring Training storylines (half way point)

A quick look into where things are at for the Brewers in Spring Training with Opening Day 1975 approaching.

Team record: 10-5 (tied for best in MGL with Brooklyn and Phoenix.)

Who's Hot: Relievers Jaden Francis, Jordan Stephens, and Liann-wei Hua have all been looking terrific in their exhibition game appearances thus far.
Josh Schaeffer has gotten hot at the plate and playing well in right field. Chad Brown is having a nice spring training, continuing to hit doubles especially.

Who's Not: Young outfielder Jorge Gonzalez has struggled at the plate although he has made some very fine plays in the outfield. He will likely be headed back to minor league camp soon. Bobby Erbakan hasn't been able to get these going at the plate yet this Spring, and Andrew Kennedy has been pretty cold also.
Name: Screenshot (165).jpg
Views: 172
Size: 184.2 KB

Injuries: As stated above, Jaden Francis has been pitching great this Spring. Unfortunately in yesterday's game he had to leave with a sore elbow and just to be on the safe side the team put him on the 10-day IL. Fortunately he has thrown a good number of innings this Spring and should get a few more appearances before Opening Day so rust shouldn't be a big issue when the season begins.

Demotions: Having spent a good amount of time in the Brewers ST camp, relievers Tim Reinecke, Antonio Nieves, and Cory Degano are assigned to minor league camp to start the season in the AAA Chester Big Stick bullpen. Middle infielders Nick Ward and Kevin Flieder are also headed back to minor league camp and AAA.

Brewers trade Peacock to Charlotte

The general consensus in the Brewers camp is that the decision to trade 27-year old right-handed pitcher Justin Peacock was a tough one. Peacock, a hard worker and good teammate, simply fell victim to a numbers game as the Brewers have too many starting pitchers and with only a handful of days to get down to the 25-man roster for the regular season, and with Peacock out of minor league options, trading him was the best option the team had.

In exchange they got a very similar player from Charlotte in Damian Hahn, with the biggest difference being Hahn's two remaining option years.

Granted, Hahn possesses only three pitches, not Peacock's five, and is much softer thrower. But Hahn is more of a ground-ball pitcher than Peacock and the biggest concern with Peacock is that he might always struggle with the long ball, and given the home park the Brewers play in that could be a fatal flaw.

Productive Spring for RodRod

Rodrigo "RodRod" Rodriguez, doing his best to make sure he is on the 25-man roster for the Brewers when the 1975 season begins, has put up some good numbers with his bat this Spring.

Spring Training wrap-up (1975)

The Brewers conclude the 1975 Spring Training schedule with the Brewers winning 10-0 against the Portland Wild Things. The win gave them an exhibition season record of 22-8, easily the best record in the MGL and a bit better than the SJL's Washington Night Train, who finished at 20-10.

The last victory saw big games from Bobby Erbakan, Joe McPhillips, Andrew Kennedy, and saw Harry Lyerly finish the Spring with a 4-1 record and an ERA of 0.89.

So, in case you don't already know this about me, this sort of thing scares the bejeezus out of me. My general feeling is that a great pre-season presages a bad regular season, or at least a bad start to the regular season.

A few last minute roster moves. Joe Willemse was sent down to AAA Chester with a few days left in the exhibition schedule and the Brewers had a tough decision to make to get down to 25 by either putting left-handed reliever Jeremy Walker, who had a very good 1974 but a tough Spring, on waivers since he is out of minor league options (or trading him) or sending down the very talented Ben Flynn, who had a great Spring, is considered far more talented than Walker and gives the team another power bat off the bench, down to AAA Chester as he has options remaining.

And then Matt Helm hurt his back and was placed on the 10-day IL. He's expected to be healed before the 10 days are up, but it kept the team from having to make any decisions yet regarding Walker and Flynn. And then Hector Hard was diagnosed with biceps tendinitis and is expected to miss at least 3 weeks and also was placed on the IL. So Willemse got to return to the Brewers to start the season.

Will Sadahiege be the highest paid Brewer?

Nice to see The Streak with +WAR (2.1)

He is still behind Cheol-han Lee in that category, though he jumps ahead of Ryan Rodgers as the second highest paid Brewer.

Here is the list of the top 15 highest salaries for 1975 in the WPK:

As you can see, Cheol-han has now fallen behind Jesse Hartong, who just signed this off-season with Baltimore as a free agent. Sadahige is 4th and Ryan Rodgers 6th. Interestingly, at it probably says something about what a premium there is in the WPK currently on starting pitching, everyone above Rodgers on this list is a starting pitcher. And seven of the top ten are all starting pitchers, with just Ryan Rodgers, Larry Glinski (who, I would have to say, is probably the most over-paid member of the top 10), and Jesus Hernandez being position players.

1975 WPK Pre-Season Predictions

With Opening Day of the 1975 WPK season upon us it is time for the annual publication of prognostications for the upcoming season.

Here is how the experts see things unfolding in the SJL this season:

Name: Capture 337.PNG
Views: 166

Interestingly, even with the league having two new expansion clubs, the experts don't see any team winning 100 games and only see one of the new clubs- the Chicago Fire- losing 100. It is predicted that the reigning SJL champs, the Jacksonville Wolf Pack, will sink to the middle of the standings. Of course, that was also predicted at the beginning of the 1974 season and instead the Wolf Pack held on to win the league, only to fall to the Denver Brewers in the World Series. This year's surprise pick to win: the Boston Berserkers, who finished in 8th last season, 12 games under .500. The Berserkers are expected to win based upon the best run scoring team in the WPK (narrowly ahead of the Phoenix Speed Devils), led by Justin Vargas and Kasey O'Neil.
There aren't really any big surprises among the players expected to be batting leaders this season, although it might surprise some that three grizzled veterans, Nate Bennett, Nick Haran, and particularly the 39-year old Jamison Bash, are still expected to be among the best. The pre-season prognosticators also see veteran Columbus starting pitcher Jake Harris as having one of his finest seasons in a while and likely being the leading candidate for another Pitcher of the Year award. The big surprise among the pitchers expected to be at the top is Ross Welch. Having had very limited appearances the past 4 seasons out of the Baltimore bullpen, the belief is that as a member of the starting rotation for the expansion Fire he will, in spite of playing on a very poor team, be among the better pitchers in the SJL.

And here are the pre-season predictions for the MGL:

As you can see, the reigning WPK champs, the Denver Brewers, are expected to finish in second this season, with the Brooklyn Aces over-taking them for the MGL title. The Aces are seen as once again having dominant pitching but also scoring more runs in 1975 than they did in 1974 and are expected to finish with the most wins in the WPK. The Brewers are still expected to be contenders and among the top teams in the WPK in runs scored but they are expected to hit fewer HR's than last season and the thought is that their pitching will be solid but unspectacular. The usually woeful Detroit Falcons are expected to finish last.

Among the players expected to be batting leaders in 1975 in the MGL are Bobby Erbakan and Ryan Rodgers but reigning MVP Joe McPhillips is conspicuous in his absence. A resurgence at the plate is expected for veteran Brooklyn center fielder (and future HOF'er) Felix Lopez, which will help to key their healthier offensive production. Among pitchers, Cheol-han Lee is expected to once again be one of the best and very possibly vie for another Pitcher of the Year award. The feeling is that Japanese import Sadahige Kawasaki will have a very fine season, even if not quite POY caliber. Aaron McNally is expected to be quite excellent again. And Charlotte's Lienhart Brown is thought to be likely one of the best in the MGL, but this is always dependent upon the fragile Brown staying healthy for a full season.

I had a feeling you were going to ask this soon.
The 1975 WPK season is based upon 1986 MLB statistical modifiers. (The range of potential seasons is actually 1972-1991.)

Confused

Bird,

Did you change the range of years? I could have sworn it was (70-89).
