Someone please explain this
My right fielder has a speed rating of 12, and a stolen bases rating of 23, on a scale of 1-100.
He also suffers from back spasms which makes him day-to-day, but I'm in an elimination game of the NLDS, so I need to use him anyway. It's affecting his running Moderately. How does this guy get picked off of first? By a pitcher with a Hold Runner rating of 54? Why is he even off the bag? Yeah, I lost. Can you tell? |

How many real life managers have asked this over the years?
If OOTP wants to simulate real life it has to have players making stupid mistakes. What is his "baserunning" rating? Without looking to the manual I think that is the skill that determines a player's awareness on the base paths(taking an extra base or knowing when not to etc.) including being aware of pick offs. Maybe intelligence is also used as a small part of the equation? In any case it's very frustrating whether in real life or OOTP, I've had it happen too. In both cased all I can think is "how did you let that happen?" |

There are a lot of things that happen in games that I don't understand. Some are just boneheaded plays that do happen in real baseball from time to time. Others seem to be weakness in the gameplay engine.
Example of the latter off the top of my head is how on a ball hit to the outfield with a hit-and-run active, the outfielder always (IME) tries to throw to first. Even when it's a high, deep fly ball to left and there is 0% chance of any runner being doubled off. In real baseball this would always get cut off to avoid the chance of an error letting the runner advance, but in OOTP I see a rainbow every time. There isn't a lot of this stuff but there are definitely some head-scratchers here and there. I like when the game prompts you to ask if you want to send a runner, and wish it would happen more often. It's quite frustrating when you're down by 1 in the ninth and a guy on first is held on a double with 2 outs and your worst hitter coming up. Sometimes you just need to roll the dice. CriticalMass, maybe if you set the base stealing slider to "Never" on the guy that would have helped? Last edited by Qeltar; 05-13-2018 at 12:44 PM. |

This recently happened IRL. I saw it live. TOR at CLE. Bottom 8th, down 2 runs. After a 1-out HR to get within one run Rajai Davis gets an IF base hit, then gets picked off. Next batter walks, followed by a run scoring double to tie the game. Inexplicably the batter Brantley makes the 3rd out at 3B with Encarnacion on deck.

Check it out!
Within those pick-off plays is: https://youtu.be/3VbIxGYHtos?t=1m38s ...an example of how replay review is ruining baseball, and sports in general: |

Specific to the OP’s situation, maybe the injured slow guy was trying to get a good lead/secondary lead for any number of reasons (avoiding a DP, going 1st to 3rd on a hit to RF, scoring on an EBH, etc). If he’s injured and slow, maybe he thought he needed an extra advantage.
