Mario Soto is making his 4th start of the season. He began the year in AAA, but earned the promotion in the beginning of May. He takes on Cliff Lee who has been relying on his incredible control. Lee has walked just 1.6 batters per 9 innings. vs Heres how the two teams will line up defensively. Cliff Lee gets and easy 1,2,3 inning to start. Soto gets into early trouble but gets bailed out when Babe Herman guns out Richie Ashburn trying for third from RF. Impressive throw. Herman has a 75 rated arm. Babe Herman Mike Schmidt scores the opening run of the game. He singles to lead off the 2nd, moves to third with one out. Dick Allen drives him with a fielders choice. It’s 1-0 Philly after two innings. Tony Perez finally gets the Reds first hit of the night after Lee retires the first 6 batters. Lee recovers easily retiring the next 3. Jimmy Rollins leads off the third with a double and would score 2 ground balls later. Philly manufacturing offense in the early going. 2-0. Barry Larkin singles, steals 2nd, advances to third on a sac fly, and scores on a Joe Morgan grounder The Reds are on the board, trailing 2-1. George Foster crushes a fast ball to left field. It’ a 352 foot home run! Foster’s 2nd of the season ties the game. 2nd home run of the season After retiring the first 2 batters in the 5th, Lee grabs his arm, and signals for the trainer to come out. Philly removes Lee from the game with an arm injury. Pete Alexander takes over. He’s appeared in 19 games, with a 4.00 ERA over 18 innings. Alexander enters the game Babe Herman hits a 2 out triple in the 6th. Joe Morgan then hits a shot down the third base line. Mike Schmidt gets to it, fires a laser beam to first…SAFE! The ump might have missed that call, but it stands. Morgan is safe, and Herman scores. 3-2 Reds! Morgan then steals 2nd, and moves to 3rd on a bad throw. He scores on George Fosters RBI single. Ted Kluszewski then singles and that’s it for Alexander. Tug McGraw enters the game and walks Eric Davis to load the bases. Tony Perez then hits a line drive off the wall. When the dust clears, Perez is standing on third, clearing the bases and its 7-2 Reds. All this with 2 outs and a questionable call! Tony Perez with the dagger! Soto is cruising now. With a nice lead, he sets down 9 in a row. The streak reaches 11 before Lefty O’Doul hits a 8th inning double. He’s left standing at 2nd though. Mike Schmidt homers in the 9th, chasing Soto from the game. Rob Dibble comes on to finish it. He does with ease. The Reds defeat the Phillies 7-3! Cliff Lee was diagnosed with DEAD ARM. It’s not serious. He won’t miss his next start. |

Carl Hubbell takes on the struggling Adam Wainwright. Back on April 10th, Hubbell allowed 4 runs on 12 hits over 8 innings in a 5-4 win for the Giants. Wainwright was removed from the rotation on May 11th. He pitched one game in relief, blowing a save on the 19th, and hasn’t pitched since. vs Here is how the Giants defense lines up And here's how the Cardinals will take the field Joe Medwick gets the games first hit and run, scoring on a Mark McGwire ground ball. Stan Musial then hits a 2 run homer, Rogers Hornsby was on base for him. The Cards jump out to a 3-0 lead. Barry Bonds leads off the game with a single and gets to 2nd after Stan Musial overruns the ball in RF. Bonds would score on a ground ball by Bill Terry. The Giants are able to answer slightly and trail 3-1 after an inning. Musial gets the Cardinals going Hubbell continues to struggle in the 2nd inning, allowing the first two hitters to get on base. His defense bails him out though. A DP and a diving catch by Mel Ott ends the inning. Dave Bancroft led off the third inning with a walk. With one out, Freddie Lindstrom drove a fly ball just inside the left field foul pole to tie the game at 3. It was Lindstrom’s 6th home run of the season. Willie Mays would strike out to end the inning, but he didn’t like the call. Mays argues and is ejected from the game. Bobby Bonds comes onto play center field. Lindstrom's 2 run shot ties the game. Yadier Molina hits a 2 out RBI double in the 4th inning, restoring the Cardinals lead. Carl Hubbell was pulled after the run and replaced by Juan Marichal. Marichal has struggled with a 4.95 ERA over 20 innings of work. Molina chases Hubbell from the game. Freddie Lindstrom hits a rocket into the left center gap, for a stand up double. Willie McCovey then hit a moonshot 456 feet to right field. Its his 12 home run. Giants back infront 5-4! That’s it for Wainwright. Mort Cooper takes over. The next batter, Bobby Bonds goes deep to left. Back to back home runs! 6-4 Giants. McCovey and Bonds go back to back. Marichal completes the next 2 innings successfully. He goes 3 scoreless, leaving in the 8th after walking Mark McGwire. Lefty Gary Lavelle comes in to face Stan Musial. Musial hits a long fly to left field. It dies on the warning track though for the out. Rob Nen enters, walks Pujols, and gives up a 2 run single to Willie McGee. Cardinals tie it at 6! McGee ties the game! Steve Carlton is now on the mound for the Cardinals. He and Brian Wilson both pitch scoreless innings to get us to the bottom of the ninth, 6-6. Barry Bonds walks and steals 2nd. With two out, and St. Louis closer Trevor Rosenthal on the mound, Bill Terry sends a hard ground ball up the middle. It’s through to the outfield. Bonds rounds third and scores without a throw! GIANTS WIN 7-6! Terry walks it off!! Last edited by George_Bell; 12-14-2017 at 10:46 AM. |

Looks like a typical Wainwright outing.
