Stadiums, leagues, positions, and WAR
Two quick questions about how OOTP16 calculates WAR.
1. I'm pretty sure it doesn't adjust for park, which I'm math-geek enough to make up for when I choose. But does it adjust for Sub-League? That is, my Western League has several excellent pitcher's parks and my Eastern League is dominated by hitter's parks. Is a Western League hitter compared to the entire major leagues -- in which case I should adjust his WAR upward slightly and adjust an Eastern Leaguer's down? Or is he just compared to his own league? 2. Am I right in assuming the game's WAR is position-adjusted, with lower hitting standards for SS, CF, and C like in real life? Thanks! We do try to park adjust based on the park factors of the home team, but we don't adjust based on where they play (ie. we assume that half their games are in the home park). So if a guy is unlucky enough to play in all pitcher dominated parks, we don't adjust for that. Same if a batter happened to have all his plate appearances against Kershaw, we don't do any adjustments for that.
As to the second point, there's no such thing as a change in hitting standards. The batting component of WAR is the same for all hitters, no matter their position. But we do apply the defensive positional adjustments, so if you have 2 guys who hit the same, the SS will have a higher WAR than the 1B. |

Thank you! I hadn't realized that park factors had been put into the calculations these days. I appreciate you guys arranging that.
The simple way to factor in league park effects -- at least in leagues, like mine, where there is no interleague play -- is just to assume each league will generate a constant amount of offensive WAR, btw. Then the replacement level of each league, and/or the runs-to-wins calculations, would adjust automatically. |
