Walkers news: Tatis sent to AAA; Clay Owens called up

The St. Louis River Walkers made a significant move in the offseason to acquire Fernando Tatis Jr. in an offseason trade with Evansville, and while on paper he might be one of the game's biggest talents he has not shown it on the field.
That's why he's going to spend a week of so in AAA Memphis.
In 2026, the 27-year-old Tatis has batted .197 with 10 homers and 25 RBIs in 62 games.
Coming up from Memphis will be catcher/first baseman Clay Owens.
The 27-year-old Owens has batted .277 with four homers and 23 RBIs in 45 games this season for the Redbirds.

Walkers news: July 3 -- St. Louis 9, Kansas City 1

Record: 44-33, 1st, 3.5 GA Springfield
St. Louis scored four runs in the third inning and four in the fourth to send it to a lopsided 9-1 win over Kansas City at Kansas City Municipal Stadium (1969).
The victory, however, did not come without a cost for the River Walkers, as ace Alex Faedo left the game in the third inning with a sprained elbow.

He is expected to miss two weeks.
St. Louis broke on top with its four run top of the third.
It all started with a two-out single from Carlos Vidal off Pit Masters starting pitcher Frank Lopez.
Lopez seemed to melt after that, allowing consecutive walks to load the bases, before hitting Jean Carmona with a pitch to drive in a run.
Jared Thomas then cleared the loaded bases with a double, making it 4-0.
St. Louis beat up on Lopez again in the fourth.
Larry Ernesto drew a lead-off walk and moved to second on a bunt from pitcher Luiis Palomo.
Bo Bichette scored Ernesto with a single.
Noah Murdock finally replaced Lopez, but St. Louis was not finished.
Rhys Hoskins singled to score Bichette.
A walk and single then loaded the bases for Thomas, who collected his fourth RBI of the game with a single.
Faedo allowed just one baserunner, via walk, in his 2.2 innings on the mound.
Palomo (2-0) took over and worked four innings, allowing one run.
Nick Lodolo retired the only batter he faced to finish the seventh.
John Curtiss didn't have much trouble in the eighth or ninth to end it.

Walkers news: Note from Ownership

Frick him.
Team record
After a sluggish start the team is in first place at 45-3 and leads the division by 4.5 games. Only three teams have a better record.
Upgrade a position (center field)
We already have the second-highest payroll in the league and team's are not giving away quality center fielders who come at a cheap price. Ernesto isn't great, but he's at least average.
Extend your player (Andrew Benintendi)
Benentendi's having a nice season, but hes also 31 years old and asking for an eight-year deal worth $25.4 per season. We extended him after his MVP season after the 2020 season. He's been a good player, not a great player ever since.
Increase attendance
Have no clue what is up with the fans. We're the defending World Series champions and are in first place, and attendance has dropped by 50 percent. I have no clue what their issue is because they're missing a good show. Spoiled bastards.

Kyle Wright limited St. Louis to one run over the first five innings and five relievers shutout the River Walkers the rest of the way, as Kansas City won 5-1 at Kansas City Municipal Stadium (1969).
The win allowed the Pit Masters to claim the final of the three-game series after dropping the first two.

The Masters grabbed the lead in the bottom of the next half-inning.
Manny Machado and Logan Tanner opened the inning with back-to-back doubles off Walkers starter Steven Brault.
Danny Cushing later scored Tanner with a single.
The Masters went up 4-1 an inning later, Machado connecting for his second double of the game and scoring when Tanner singled.
The final Kansas City run came in the seventh off reliever John Curtiss.
Blaze Jordan led off with a double and he advanced to third and home on groundouts by Carlos Correa and Machado.
Wright (5-6) allowed one run on five hits in his five innings.

Walkers news: July 7 -- St. Louis 9, Cedar Rapids 0

Record: 48-35, 1st, 3.5 GA Des Moines

Lambert (4-2) scattered seven hits over nine innings, in addition to striking out nine and not walking any.
His home run came in the eighth inning off Cedar Rapids reliever Patrick Weigal. It provided the final run of the game.
Cedar Rapids starter Ranger Suarez actually matched Lambert zero for zero for the first five innings.
Suarez exited for the bottom of the sixth in favor of Jose Alvarado.
Not too long after, the shutout was gone.
Rhys Hoskins opened the inning by reaching on an error by third baseman RJ Teijeiro.
After a flyout by Andrew Benintendi, Hoskins moved to second on a wild pitch and later found third on a Larry Ernesto single.
A walk to Jared Thomas loaded the bases, and brought Thomas Burrows into the game.
On Burrows' fourth pitch. VIdal Burjan cranked his first homer of the season -- a 341-foot grand slam over the wall in left field -- to put St. Louis up 4-0.
The Walkers ravaged the Cedar Rapids' bullpen for four more runs in the seventh.

Walkers news: July 8 -- St. Louis 5, Cedar Rapids 1

Record: 47-35, 1st, 3.5 GA Des Moines
Making a start in place of the injured Alex Faedo, Argenis Batista got the job done limiting Cedar Rapids to one run over six innings to lead St.Louis to a 5-1 win and a three-game sweep of the Golden Grapplers at Busch Stadium (1997).
Banished from the rotation after starting the season 2-7, Batista allowed just the one run on two hits during his time on the mound against Cedar Rapids. He also struck out five and walked none.
The River Walkers took control of the game by scoring three times in the bottom of the third inning.
Making his first major league start, Clay Owens got it going with a lead-off homer off Grapplers starter Sean Harp.
Owens scored when Bo Bichette followed with another double.
St. Louis would eventually load the bases.
Andrew Benintendi unloaded them with a two-run single.
St. Louis added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
A homer from Larry Ernesto off Zach Schellenger provided the run int the fifth.
Bo Bichette led off the sixth with a single off Evan Palmer and later scored on a Jean Carmona sacrifice fly.

The Prairie Fighters' Austin Hendrick led off the top of the 11th with a homer off River Walkers reliever Nick Lodolo, putting his team on top 4-3.
Kenley Jansen retired Edmond Americaan to open the bottom of the 11th for St. Louis.
Francis Martes replaced Jansen, and his luck wasn't nearly as good.
Johan Camargo greeted him with a single, and Vidal Brujan followed with a walk.
Another walk, to Andrew Benintendi, loaded the bases.
Martes got past one major hurdle when Rhys Hoskins flied out to center, why the AI didn't give the option to try and score the runner from third pissed me off.
But JT Schwartz drew the third walk of the inning to tie it.
Ken Giles got the ball for Springfield.
His 3-2 pitch to Larry Ernesto traveled 408 feet over the right-field wall to give the Walkers the win.
A two-run homer from the Fighters' Dylan Crews in the seventh off John Curtiss had put Springfield up 3-2.

Walkers news: July 10 -- Springfield 14, St. Louis 0

Record: 48-36, 1st, 4.5 GA Des Moines
It was just one of those games, everything Springfield hit found a hole and St. Louis could not buy a hit as the Prairie Fighters routed the River Walkers 14-0 at Busch Stadium (1997).
The Prairie Fighters got the only run they would only really need in the top of the first.
Daniel Becerra drew a walk from Steven Brault to open the game.
A walk and single would load the bases before Austin Hendrick scored Becerra to make it 1-0.
The Fighters broke it open in the third with three more runs.
Most of it came from the bat from Victor Caratini, who cranked a three-run homer off Brault.
After that, Springfield would score twice in the sixth, three in the sixth (RBI doubles from Alex Bregman and Dylan Crews) and five in the ninth (Franmil Reyes with a three-run homer and Crews with a two-run double) as the game just got ugly.
By the way, the River Walkers only hit was a two-out single from Bo Bichette in the fifth inning.
Springfield starter Jarred Kelly allowed just the one hit in his five inings.
He was followed by Keegan Thompson (2.0 IP), Andrew Miller (1.0) and Dinelson Lamet (1.0).
