All New York Mets Division Update

I put a number of significant historical Mets teams in the same division. Here's how they've done so far.

Update 2

The 1986 team really took off. The '69 & '99 squads are hanging around.

17-85 for the first Mets team.

BTW, their inter-divisional games are against a bunch of pretty much random teams.

All 1986

Still the '86 Mets out in front at 89-46.

The 1969 & 1999 teams are playing good ball, too.

The 1973 Mets & 2015 Mets are struggling on this schedule pretty mightily...

All we can say for these 2006 Mets is that they're not feeling well or that this incarnation of the game does them no favors.

The 1977 Mets are dreadful, check.

And checking in on the 1962 Mets, 27 wins in 134 games.

Now, I'm not sure exactly what the playoffs are going to look like, it's probably the default format...….but the other division leaders at this time are the 1976 Cincinnati Reds & 2018 Los Angeles Dodgers. It looks like there may be a wild card, too...(just the 3 divisions of 8 teams)...the 1999 Arizona Diamondbacks lead the 1969 New York Mets in that race.

Here are the final standings.

The 1986 team finishes with 1 less win than they did in 1986. Their prize for finishing best among these Mets teams is a playoff that will include 3 other teams. Those teams will be the 2018 Los Angeles Dodgers, the 1999 Arizona Diamondbacks & the 1976 Cincinnati Reds. I suppose I'll update on how that goes. Roughly, at least.

The 1999 Mets finish 94-68, ahead of the 1969 Mets who managed a 92-70 record, 8 games off their real life pace...

The 1973 Mets finished 4th but a rather dismal 77-85 record. Then again, I believe this World Series team only won 82 in 1973.

Suprisingly the 2015 & 2006 Mets both finished even worse than them at 74-88 & 68-94! respectively. I kindly ask that maybe someone look over that 2006 team & make sure there aren't any mistakes. Is Nady included? I'm too lazy to look... ha... he was better than Green who they got at the end of the season for Oliver Perez. It was a good team both ways but I loathe the day they made that trade in some respects.

The dark days 1977 Mets actually managed to win 70 games.

The 40-120 club of 1962 finished out this sim at an even worse 32-130.

May alllll our baseball dreams come true.

World Series

So the 2018 LA Dodgers & the 1999 Arizona Diamondbacks fell in the playoffs and we wound up with an interesting best-of-7 series that I may not have thought to simulate for entertainment-ish purposes otherwise:

The 1976 Cincinnati Reds and their early 70s machine

vs.

The 1986 New York Mets and their late 80s great teams

The series just got underway, I will update game-by-game over the next however long it takes.

Game 1

Game 1 was all Metsies.

El Sid shut them down & Dykstra and Carter drove 'em in.

14-6 win. Series 1-0 1986 Mets.

More Mets!

The Mets won game 2, 7-1.
They exploded in the 6th & 7th innings plating 6 total runs while Gooden kept the machine at bay from the mound.

Hmm...I'm not sure how J Niese ended up on the team (I guess I allowed trades and a trade was made, that makes most sense) but fun fact: Jonathon Niese of the 2015 era Mets was born on the same day the New York Mets defeated the Boston Red Sox in the 1986 World Series.

The Reds win one

Johnny Bench went 3-for-4 with a HR, Joe Morgan 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI & the Reds won 6-3.

Ojeda started the game for the Mets and the Reds really got to him in the 6th inning, which was his last.

So the series is now 2-1 in favor of the 1986 Mets.

Big Red Machine seems to be malfunctioning

The Reds started left-hander Don Gullett which often meant a win for them in the '70s and they did take a 1-0 lead into the late innings...BUT...Kevin Mitchell hit a 2-R HR off of reliever Will McEnaney and the Mets tacked on 1 more while Niese, Niemann & McDowell kept the Reds scoreless in the final 3 innings... The Mets end up winning game 4, 3-1 to take a 3-1 advantage in the series.

The Reds will have to win 3 in a row to win this series.

1986 Mets win series

Darryl Strawberry hit his 3rd home run of the playoffs, SID FERNANDEZ went deep for the New York Mets...

Kevin Mitchell hit another homer and was probably series MVP.

After going down 9-0 in this game the Reds put up 6 runs in the bottom of the 8th, but the Mets answered with 4 more runs in the top of the 9th inning.

The final was 13-7.
