The Boise 97s - An Alternate MLB

When the doors first opened on Major League Baseball in the year 2011, Boise was prepared to be one of the best teams in the league. Their pitching and offense were both among the top ranked, and it showed in their first two seasons, when the team finished in second and first place in the AL West, making the playoffs both times but failing to make it to the World Series in either.

In 2011, it was the Birmingham Cadets that ended their bid in the Wild Card game, and in 2012 the Norfolk Grasshoppers took them all the way to Game 5 of the Divisional Series, where Boise would ultimately end up losing. Since that Game 5, Boise has never seen themselves lifted out of the basement of the AL West, and came to an embarrassing 53-109 record in 2016. Going into the offseason, owner Derrick Keil decided it was time to make some changes. He wanted to prioritize winning, and he would do what it took to do so.

It was time for a new face to lead the Boise franchise. A new head of baseball operations took over, and the team was re-made into something that would hopefully be turned into a contender once more. This is the story of the Boise 97s, picking up at the start of the 2017 season.

This dynasty follows the Boise 97s, a fictional team in an alternate MLB set up. The league structure is exactly the same as the modern MLB, but all of the teams are fictional. Teams have been randomly assigned to 30 of the 100 most populous cities in the United States, with no current Major League city receiving a team. Players are historical MLB players, with a few fictional players still clinging on after the start of the franchise. More and more historical players will come in via the draft.

Boise Roster

Catchers
  • Lew McCarty (40 OVR/41 POT, 55 DEF) - McCarty is 28 years old and the defacto catcher on this team only because I wasn't able to make significant improvements at the position this offseason. His only above average skills are his ability to avoid strikeouts and his arm. While there's plenty to be said for having a good defensive catcher, McCarty will need to vastly improve on last year's .198/.265/.245, 1 HR, and 14 RBI performance to keep his spot.
  • George Miller (36/36, 50 DEF) - Miller is a little older than McCarty at 29, but he has has a chance to steal the starting spot from McCarty if he can prove that his bat is better. The previous GM picked Miller off of waivers from Irvine, and he did have a better year than the incumbent with a .233/.336/.379, 2 HR, 16 RBI line. Still, the scouts like him significantly less. Miller will be given his chances.
Infielders
  • Wayne Cage (40/40, 50 DEF 1B) - Cage, 26, is the first of the offseason pick ups I made to reshape this team. Gone are the four first basemen the previous GM left me, and in to the bench spot is Cage. The man has legitimate power, but he strikes out too often and makes poor contact. Last year, in AAA, he hit for a .255/.310/.500, 12 HR, 41 RBI batting line, and he'll fill the role of my left-handed power threat off the bench nicely.
  • Art Shires (46/46, 50 DEF 1B) - Shires is the younger of my two first basemen at 24, and he's the better of the two as my starter. A strong spring got him into the top of the line up, and hopefully he continues to produce. There's some cause for concern though, as his .252/.307/.357, 8 HR, 63 RBI batting line from last year leaves a lot to be desired.
  • Roberto Alomar (72/80, 65 DEF 2B) - The young star of this team, the 21 year old Alomar is my central building block for making a contender in Boise again. He's simply good at everything, and the voters recognized it, giving him the Gold Glove and Platinum Stick award in 2016, as well as the first of what is sure to be many All-Star nods in his career. At the age of 20, Alomar hit .291/.344/.485, 23 HR, 82 RBI and things only look up. His future looks bright.
  • Dan McGann (51/56, 50 DEF 2B) - My best performer this spring, the 25 year old McGann earned his way into the starting DH role this year. McGann is a solid offensive contributor, though he just barely broke rookie limits last year. Don't let his 2016 line of .272/.337/.338, 1 HR, 26 RBI fool you. He's a better hitter than that.
  • Jack Merson (35/35, 55 DEF 3B) - Merson, 33, came into this spring as a lock for the bench and managed to hit his way into the starting role. Last year was rough for him as a regular, where he posted a .223/.245/.359, 9 HR, 32 RBI line, but he'll look to improve this year.
  • Willy Adames (49/49, 40 DEF SS) - Adames, 26, was the next of my offseason pick ups to shore up the infield. I needed a shortstop, and while his glove leaves something to be desired, Adames is a former All-Star level hitter who had a down year last year. I'm willing to gamble on him returning to his 130 OPS+ days. 2016 saw him hit .247/.312/.368, 20 HR, 70 RBI. For now, he has the leadoff spot locked down.
  • Tony York (29/29, 55 DEF SS) - Every team needs a glove-first utility player, and for this team that's Tony York. His bat leaves a lot to be desired - he hit .235/.309/.367, 6 HR, 27 RBI in AAA last year, but his glove is ready all around the infield.
Outfielders
  • Jorge Bonifacio (48/48, 40 DEF LF) - I was facing a roster crunch in the outfield coming out of spring training, and it looked like the 26 year old Bonifacio was going to be the one to go with one week left. Instead, my starting left fielder got injured and Bonifacio lit the world on fire, earning the starting spot. His .283/.341/.478, 5 HR, 17 RBI line in limited playing time last year was impressive, and hopefully he can recreate it.
  • Emil Brown (50/51, 45 DEF LF) - It looked all but certain that Brown would beat out Bonifacio but he went ice cold when the latter got hot, and the 25 year old Brown finds himself on the bench. He's got potential, but he'll need to do something better than .236/.312/.374, 5 HR, 20 RBI to compete.
  • Bake McBride (62/62, 75 DEF CF) - "Shake N Bake" has the best nickname on the team, and the 28 year old is extremely popular with the fans. His performance over the past few seasons has been excellent, and he earned himself an extension from me coming into this year. McBride hit a middling .263/.311/.363, 9 HR, 35 RBI in 151 games last year, but his defense was good enough to give him 5.6 WAR anyways.
  • Ival Goodman (54/54, 50 DEF RF) - Potentially the second best player on this team behind Alomar, Goodman, 29, anchors the middle of the line up. His .288/.337/.488, 30 HR, 91 RBI line from last year was the best of his career, and if he can build on it, he'll be a force for sure. As it stands, he's locked into a five year contract.
Pitchers - Starters

  • Johnny Babich (55/55, 92 MPH) - Babich is the baby of the staff at 20, but he's also the ace of the staff. His rookie showing last year saw him post a 3.78 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, and 8.7 K/9. He's earned his spot at the top of the rotation, and hopefully he'll be anchoring it for years to come.
  • You-yi Miao (52/52, 94 MPH) - We go from the youngest to the oldest pitcher in the rotation. Miao, at 41, is a hired gun brought in this offseason to help turn the pitching staff around while we develop our prospects. His 3.52 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, and 7.0 K/9 last year give him the number two spot behind Babich.
  • Chris Jones (47/47, 91 MPH) - Jones is the second of the free agent starters recruited to Boise this offseason, and just like Miao, he's 41 years old. Jones has never missed time to injury and should eat plenty of solid innings for us. His 4.65 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, and 7.6 K/9 give him the number three spot.
  • Bruce Berenyi (36/36, 95 MPH) - Believe it or not, I sought out Berenyi this offseason despite his poor performance last year. At 30, Berenyi seems to have his better years behind him, but he's still better than the third, fourth, and fifth option Boise was trotting out last year. His 5.89 ERA, 1.73 WHIP, and 5.9 K/9 obviously leave a lot to be desired, but I'm hopeful he can improve somewhat.
  • Joe Borden (25/25, 94 MPH) - Borden, 25, is a holdover from last year's rotation that I just couldn't get rid of. His 5.80 ERA, 1.80 WHIP, and 7.0 K/9 are just as ugly as Berenyi, and he completes the rotation slotting in at number five.
Bullpen
  • Luis Avilan (56/56, 92 MPH) - Avilan, 26, is someone else I brought in this offseason. I was able to acquire Avilan in a closer swap by sending out Brian Bruney and his 6+ ERA. All the better for me. Avilan's 2.80 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, and 6.8 K/9 in 2016 look a lot better than Bruney did. He'll be my go-to closer.
  • Rafael Betancourt (50/50, 97 MPH) - When I found Boise, Betancourt was their number five starter and pitching predictably poorly. He had a 4.62 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, and 6.7 K/9 as a starter, but I put him back in the bullpen. Now 32, Betancourt is the first of my set-up relievers and the first man I trust when we're in trouble.
  • Al Epperly (49/49, 93 MPH) - Epperly is one of the only survivors of my bullpen overhaul. The 22 year old is a dependable arm, if not a great one. By virtue of experience, Epperly is in the set-up role, but he could wind up being used all over. His 4.81 ERA, 1.59 WHIP, and 7.6 K/9 in 2016 don't exactly inspire confidence.
  • Tony Cogan (35/35, 94 MPH) - The 29 year old lefty is my go-to specialist. He should be able to get lefties out while not being great against righties. His 2016 saw him pitch a 2.92 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, and 8.4 K/9, granting him safety when I tore the bullpen down.
  • Deacon C Jones (41/53, 93 MPH) - The 27 year old was left unprotected during the Rule V draft, and I had the first pick. Jones has personality issues that could see me return him, but for now he has a spot as a middle reliever. Jones pitched to a 3.08 ERA, 1.37 WHIP, and 7.0 K/9 in AAA last year.
  • George Milstead (49/65, 94 MPH) - At 25, Milstead is the kind of lefty everyone wishes they could have - deployable against righties, and a weapon against the left-handed hitters. His 3.35 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, and 5.6 K/9 made him a surefire trade target for me, and I got him for the low, low price of one Phil Coke.
  • Mike Gardiner (34/37, 91 MPH) - I'm hopeful that the 28 year old Gardiner was just being misused last year, because if not I'm going to have a mess of a long reliever on my hands. He performed excellently as a reliever in spring training, but his 6.99 ERA, 1.68 WHIP, and 4.4 K/9 as a starter for Boise last year was ugly.
