MLB Expansion?
If MLB expands to 32 teams what are the chances they'll do away with NL/AL and just have a 16 team North Division and a 16 team South Division?
Cap P.S. Is it time for team managers and coaches to stop wearing uniforms and wear suits like they do in every other sport?

Too many teams would be out of the playoffs too soon, and then would see attendance drop off. My Cardinals had a chance at the playoffs, THIS year, with just five games remaining, and they had a terrible year. In short, MLB is a business, and their efforts to maximize revenue include going to a ton of small divisions, 55 years ago. |

There was a post on Reddit recently related to this topic and the result was intriguing at first glance: https://old.reddit.com/r/baseball/co...ake_sense_mlb/

My picks would be Austin and Portland. I would like colorado springs but probably not realistic.

A couple of months ago I heard a couple of sports commentators say that MLB was seriously considering expanding to a talent-diluted 32 teams and getting rid of AL/NL designations, partly due to the adoption by NL of the DH. There's no big difference any more between the two leagues. I could see them creating four 8-team divisions: North, South, East, West. [It might bring back the Toronto-Detroit rivalry which makes more sense than Toronto and Philadelphia (?).] No idea how they would assign teams to each division.
I think there's a greater chance of Calgary or Vancouver getting a team than Montreal. There's zero public support for baseball in Quebec. Women's hockey, yes. Even women's basketball. If they could figure out how to make eating poutine a sport they'd probably get behind it. Cap

Number of teams added to each league since 1999 (25 years ago):
MLB: 0 NBA: 1 NFL: 2 NHL: 5 Fun fact: MLB has played considerably more seasons at 30 teams and 6 divisions (26) then it did at 26 teams and 4 divisions (16). |

Which two NFL teams started after 1999? I'm tracking the Houston Texans. Are you including the Browns reinstatement as the other?

Man, I'd love to see a new MLB team in NorCal. I get if the well's been poisoned with Oakland at this point, but I think Sacramento would be a very viable market for an MLB franchise.
I'm not saying I expect that to happen, or that I'd even think such a thing to be likely. This is just an ex-A's fan from Sacramento going "Man, I'd love to see this happen." Among other things, there's the issue of SF Giants territory to consider - and that's not nothing. If I were MLB, cities like Nashville and San Antonio would be very interesting.

New Cleveland in 1999, which was in reality an expansion regardless of whatever legal niceties had been agreed to by the city and the NFL, and Houston in 2002. The NBA added its 30th team in 2004. The NHL added one team in 1999, two in 2000, one in 2017, and one in 2021.
