Season 15 (2033) Discussion: 3/11/19 - 3/17/19

Tangling for the lead in my diamond division at this point, which is dandy… the team got enough points yesterday for a new pack... which gave me a Gerrit Cole.

What diamond did I pull last week? Gerrit Cole.

What is in my rotation unless his ERA gets closer to 6 again and he gets bopped? Gerrit Cole.

Gerrit ****ing Cole is everywhere.

I have got him in packs several times. What a disappointing feeling when that beautiful blue card flips and he is staring back at you.

Speaking of beautiful blue cards, my Tucson Sidewinders finally bellied up to the AH and went big.

Even as a Yankees fan I'm a little quesy about my choice. But considering the line he's putting up so far, Jose Vidro is looming to take back his spot at 1st base.

My Coulee Cubs are trying to salvage some dignity from a rough first tour of duty in silver. Started off ugly with a 12-game losing streak on Monday. Squad is currently 18-29 so if you exclude that losing streak (lol), then it's basically a .500 club I guess.

Made some bargain bin upgrades by adding Fred Newman (silver), Bryce Harper (gold), Yordan Alvarez (silver), and Nelson Cruz (silver). Also training Andrelton Simmons to backup all INF and OF positions--hopefully it doesn't hurt me too much as he learns.

Well, the good news is that someone has already bid on the extra-extra Cole for 5,700, so at least I can roll some more dice tonight…

I would reeeeeally like myself a slick historical diamond. I am not even that greedy. Does not have to be perfect Eck and Mays in the same set of packs.

But I would reeeeeeally like myself a slick historical diamond…

Then again, nine days til PT 2.0 … might as well draw one there.

So far this season I am in second place in my diamond division but leading in the wildcard race. The first place team is 8 games ahead. I am not sure I can catch them they are stacked with good enough players that they will probably be very consistent for the most part.

Coulee Cubs -- Not Dead Yet in Silver .324

After a pretty disastrous start to silver, going 6-18 in April, Coulee is just now starting to find some solid ground. The team went 14-13 in May and 15-11 so far in June. Currently riding a 7-game winning streak (yup--a streak) that includes not 1, not 2, not 3, but 4 one-run victories. All of them of the walk-off variety. Even so, the club is only 10-15 in one-run games this season. Being last in the conference in scoring runs has its disadvantages I guess.

Fred Newman (silver), Bryce Harper (gold), Yordan Alvarez (silver), and Nelson Cruz (silver) have been the only in-season acquisitions so far. Also decided to jack up baserunning/stealing player strategy to max for anyone with any shred of running speed (Altuve, Simmons, Butler, Belanger). Because, why the heck not? Andrelton Simmons is now rated 25/100 at 2B, 46/100 at 3B, 7/100 at LF, 5/100 at CF, and 11 at RF. Training for everywhere but C/1B will take a while, even for a defensive genius like Simba.

Hoping to save up enough PP for that right-handed slugger I've had my eye on to complement these lefty bats. Now that the team is winning again, I may actually start getting some PP again. lol

You need to bring patience to a Raccoons game this season. We are conceding the second-fewest runs, but are also hardly scoring. Bottom in home runs, actually, and the rest of the numbers is not pretty, either. Somehow, it still amounts to a 47-34 record through the end of June and first place in the division, up by 5 1/2 games.

Whitey Ford threw my first PT no-hitter.

Woop, woop!

As usual, my pitching & defense is keeping me competitive, while my hitting is inconsistent. JD Martinez & Ron Santo have been cold so far. Picked up Cleon Jones at the backend of last season. He's been a good pickup so far. Paul Waner's back in the lineup too & doing a decent job at cleanup against RHP (probly not where he should hit but I'm trying something)

The first place team in my league is 61-20 , so in spite of me being 13 games above .500 at 48-35 I am already 14 games behind and relegated to playing for a wildcard berth.

The first place team has an all diamond lineup and rotation (including 3 or 4 perfect cards) so I don't have any reasonable chance to catch them.

THAT is wonderful. In all my years playing OOTP in every mode I have never had a pitcher throw a no hitter. EVER. What is funny (Not really funny because the joke is on me.) I always try and build my Pitching staff first and prided myself (Obviously wrongly prideful) In making a quality staff season in and season out. So congratulations because that is something I always wanted and the ninth inning is the closest I ever got. 🥂

Keep working them (Your team) my friend. I respect players who take chances to make their team better instead of just plugging and playing. Keep it up and you may find that key that unlocks winning. 🥂

Just started a new Bronze team with just players from Oakland and SF. Half way through the season I am 4th in run differential and am 6 games under 500.

It was one walk away from being a perfect game, too. And he only faced 27 batters thanks to a double-play!

You'll get one, Zorro!

Coulee Cubs -- A Little Bit Dead

As the season grinds on in Silver .324, things are looking less likely that Coulee will snatch a wild card in the National Conference. Although, even thinking on a wild card is a massive leap forward after a 6-18 April that portended certain relegation.

Coulee posted a 3rd consecutive winning month in July, albeit barely, going 13-12. At 1-2 so far in August, Coulee owns a 50-57 overall mark (57-50 pythag). The team currently in pole position for the 2nd WC is 61-45; so you're saying there's a chance?

Coulee added J.D. Martinez (whom I had an eye on for about a week IRL and lost out on bids twice before caving to a buy now at 1750 PP) for his right-handed thunder. The team has also evolved into more of a speed/defense look. Matt Duffy was subbed in at 3B (sold my gold Bob Elliott) and, being found unsatisfactory, Mark Belanger was shifted over from SS to 3B with Luis Aparicio being obtained to split time at SS with Andrelton Simmons (Simmons continues to wander all over the diamond). Yordan Alvarez shifted from LF to 1B and Bryce Harper (gold) from RF to LF to make room for Carlos Beltran (silver) and the return of Ichiro (bronze) into the outfield mix.

With Simmons, Aparicio, Belanger, Ichiro, Beltran, and Brett Butler in the lineup on any given day this team will struggle mightily to touch diamond-grade pitchers. But it will be a terror on the basepaths and very strong on defense. Because the squad had been hovering between 13th and 15th in the NC in runs scored (but 1st in runs allowed) as a slower "mashing" unit anyway, might as well accentuate the positives and try to win every game 1-0.

Just in case any of that explanation was too convoluted, here's the current configuration:

1 - CF - Brett Butler/Ichiro
2 - 2B - Jose Altuve
3 - 1B - Yordan Alvarez/Cecil Fielder
4 - DH - J.D. Martinez
5 - LF - Bryce Harper/Ichiro
6 - C - John Wockenfuss
7 - RF - Carlos Beltran/Ichiro
8 - 3B - Mark Belanger/Andrelton Simmons
9 - SS - Luis Aparacio/Andrelton Simmons

So the Coons are somewhat securely in first place right now, but the madness of this week is getting to me.

I pulled that diamond Cole, sold him, opened more packs, pulled a diamond Severino, which is also a duplicate for me, sold THAT for good coin (9k), and have now turned all those BP to ashes, too, but didn't pull a diamond.

Oh what flash must it be to pull a historical diamond…

My Diamond Coons beat a perfect Chris Sale who is 4-13 with a 5.27 ERA. It's not even a bad BABIP (.300), but somehow the baseball gods are out to get that one.

Leading the division by six after a 2-6 slide.
