MLB's Northern Expansion - A New OOTP 19 Series

Name: 2016 Baseball Winter Meetings Logo.png
Views: 1556
Size: 52.0 KB

Monday, December 5, 2016 (National Harbor, MD)

Major League Baseball is expanding north of the border! This morning, MLB Commissioner, Rob Manfred, awarded Montreal, Quebec and Vancouver, British Columbia with each an expansion team for the 2018 season. Mr. Manfred also spoke about the league's re-alignment needed in order to make the northern expansion to a 32-team league possible.

The Montreal Expos will be returning to Olympic Stadium for the first time in over 14 years! Fans across the city and the province of Quebec hit the streets in jubilation as they heard the announcement. The team's vintage logo will make it back on the jersey and caps. Minor league affiliates have not been announced yet, however, it looks like the Ottawa Lynx might make a comeback too.

Canada's West Coast will be getting their first taste of major league baseball. Vancouver has been the home of the "Short-Season A" Canadians since 2000. They are the Toronto Blue Jays current minor league affiliate. That will change as the Canadians affiliation will now be with the city's major league club.

Announcements on Vancouver's team name is yet to be determined. There is currently a contest for fans to participate in the team's naming. (Reply to the thread if you have a suggestion)

Are The Tampa Bay Rays Moving?

Coming into the Winter Meetings, there were rumors swirling that the Tampa Bay Rays would have to relocate due to their failed contract negotiations with Tropicana Field. Mr. Manfred did confirm the rumors and announced that the Rays will be moving to Charlotte, North Carolina for the 2018 season.

Why Charlotte?

It is the 17th-most populous city in the United States and has grown significantly over the last 25 years to now double the population of Atlanta. The city already supports NFL and NBA franchises. It is also the home of NASCAR. The Triple-A Charlotte Knights led Minor League Baseball with an average attendance of 8,974 fans a game in 2016.

MLB Re-Alignment & Rule Changes For 2018

In 2018, the MLB will be welcoming two Canadian expansion teams and will also see the Tampa Bay Rays move to Charlotte, NC. Because of this, the league has decided to re-align the divisions and to enforce the DH rule for both the American League and the National League.

The following is the new league structure:

American League

Northeast Division
Cleveland Indians
Detroit Tigers
Montreal Expos
Toronto Blue Jays

Atlantic Division
Baltimore Orioles
Boston Red Sox
Charlotte Flight (previously Tampa Bay Rays)
New York Yankees

Mid-West Division

Minnesota Twins

Southwest Division

Oakland Athletics
Texas Rangers

National League

Northeast Division

Central Division

Cincinnati Reds
Colorado Rockies
St. Louis Cardinals

Northwest Division
Los Angeles Dodgers
San Francisco Giants
Seattle Mariners
Vancouver (To Be Named)

South Division
Arizona Diamondbacks
Atlanta Braves
Miami Marlins
San Diego Padres

Playoff Format

A playoff spot will be awarded to each divisional winner. One Wildcard spot will be given to the next best team in each league. Each wildcard team will play against the division-winning team with the lowest winning percentage in each league.

I'm looking forward to this!

Also, glad North Carolina now has a team (as a current NC resident).

I'm not good with names, but something potential names for Vancouver could have to do with the beautiful surrounding nature

Something about mountains, eagles, ocean, lol sorry I wish I was a better help, I've never been there

When it comes to naming teams, I always go to a city's wikipedia page and read about the city. You might find something cool about the city that you never knew and you could go off of that.

If I don't find anything I like, then I go to txranger's google drive. If you're not familiar with him, you should do so. He's the logo/unis guru over on the mod's forum. If you go to his drive and look through, you can almost undoubtedly find a brand for that particular city that you like.

Lastly, for Vancouver in particular, I've done expansions there in the past and usually end up calling them the Mountaineers and used this logo

EP 3: Montreal Expos vs Toronto Blue Jays 2-Game Exhibition Series

March 31st, 2018

After the 10-5 exhibition loss to the Toronto Blue Jays, Expos' GM & Manager Jean Brunet stated that he was very pleased with his team's performance over the 2-game exhibition series at Olympic Stadium.

"The series gave us a chance to evaluate the players and to give them a bit of practice before the regular season begins. It also allowed us to see our division rival's lineup for the first time," said Brunet.

When asked about his thoughts on the preseason predictions having the Expos finishing the season with 69 wins, last in the American League Northeast, Brunet said, "I'm happy with that number! 1969 is when the Expos first came into the league! All joking aside, it's a very conservative number, however, it is a long season. We still have 162 games to go! So, anything can happen!"

BREAKING NEWS: Ryu for Gibson

April 17, 2018

According to RDS, there were mixed emotions in the Expos clubhouse this morning as a trade with the Minnesota Twins was announced earlier today.

The Montreal Expos swapped 27-year-old C Max Stassi, 31-year-old LHP Hyun-Jin Ryu and 26-year-old minor league RF Chad Pinder to the Twins in exchange for 28-year-old RHP Jake Odorizzi, 18-year-old minor league 2B Yunior Severino and 30-year-old RHP Kyle Gibson.

"I'm looking forward to playing in Minnesota. I hope to compete for a starting role there as it seemed Jean was set on developing Danny [Jansen] into the starting role," said Max Stassi to RDS reporter Jean-Luc Legendre.

Kyle Gibson is a 6-year MLB veteran who has a four-pitch mix, which includes an above average slider, a decent fastball, an average changeup, and a decent sinker. His outstanding stuff combined with above average control should lead to swings and misses. Last season, Gibson was 12-10 ERA 5.07 in 29 starts in Minnesota. He struck out 121 batters in 158 innings pitched.

Jake Odorizzi was 10-8 ERA 4.14 in 28 starts in Tampa Bay last year. He had 127 strikeouts in 143.1 innings pitched.

Yunior Severino has an excellent strike zone recognition. As he develops he's expected to be a very athletic second baseman. He has an ok swing. He isn't a phenom, but he could be a decent contact hitter. Severino is an above average, everyday big league player. He will not see any action for the rest of the season due to Montreal's minor-league system not being announced before the schedules were set.

"I'm looking forward to seeing what Gibson and Odorizzi will bring to the rotation. Max is a good kid, however, we needed to bolster our rotation to be competitive and Danny's our go-to guy at catcher. We'll have to play some games to see who won that trade! With the recent waiver acquisition of Drew Hutchison and the latest additions, there's going to be more competition in the rotation and bullpen. Nobody is immune," said Montreal Expos' GM & Manager Jean Brunet.

The Montreal Expos continue their road trip to Cleveland for a 3-game divisional series.
