A's announce front office promotions for Beane, Forst
October 5, 2015 11:00 am
Joe Stigllich
CSNBAYAREA.COM

The A's announced a re-structuring of their front office on Monday, with Billy Beane being promoted to executive vice president of baseball operations and David Forst taking over as general manager.

“Billy Beane and David Forst have continually proven themselves to be two of the best baseball minds in the game today,” A’s owner and managing partner Lew Wolff said. “The team remains in great hands. We’re very fortunate to have not one but two executives of their caliber.”

Beane was named GM shortly following the 1997 season. Under his watch, the A’s have compiled a 1552-1362 (.533) record over the last 18 seasons, which is the fourth best record in the American League and sixth best in all of baseball during that time frame. The A’s have won six American League West titles (2000; 2002-03; 2006; 2012-13) and secured two AL Wild Card spots (2001 and 2014) during that span.

In 2013, Beane was named Baseball America’s Major League Executive of the Year for the second time (also in 2002). That award came on the heels of Beane being selected as The Sporting News Executive of the Year for a second time in his career in 2012 (also in 1999). He also earned MLB.com’s Greatness in Baseball Yearly (GIBBY) Award as the 2012 MLB Executive of the Year and the 2012 Legacy Awards’ Rube Foster Award as AL Executive of the Year, presented by the Negro League Baseball Museum.

Forst recently completed his 16th season with the A’s and his 12th as assistant GM. He was appointed to the assistant general manager position in February of 2004 after serving as an assistant to the general manager and coordinator of professional scouting. His primary duties include working with Beane on all player acquisitions, contract negotiations and player evaluations.

Table of Contents

And with that we're off! Thanks to CSNBayArea.com and Joe Stiglich for the great introduction for my dynasty. This post will serve as an introduction and also be updated with a Table of Contents as my dynasty progresses. I will be taking control of the Oakland A's as GM David Forst. I will make all roster moves for the Major League roster and leaving lineup and rotation decisions to our Manager, Bob Melvin. I plan on simming some games, but also playing out others. I've already got some things up my sleeve for changing the universe to be more of my own fictional universe so stay tuned! Thanks ahead of time for reading.

2016 Season Preview

2016 Season Preview
April 3, 2016

David Forst inherits a team and organization from Billy Beane that has fallen into serious disrepair. The team has been projected by the experts to finish in the cellar of the AL West and the newly minted Baseball News Network has the A’s finishing the season at 71-91. And help is certainly not on the way from within the organization. The team ranks has the 21st best minor league system in the league, with only two Top 100 prospects (#30 1B Matt Olson and #81 SP Sean Manaea). If the A’s want to be successful, they’ll most likely have to search outside the organization to get that help.

Couple those two facts with penny-pinching owner Lew Wolff and a disastrous stadium situation and the future only gets bleaker and bleaker. In a way, it’s good that some change has occurred and that Beane has risen to a new rank. Maybe the new blood will help the poor product that the A’s put on the field last season and help them capture that very elusive World Series title they have been yearning for.

Despite the negative outlook for the coming season, hope springs eternal. There is a reason they play the games after all. So without further ado, here are your 2016 Oakland A’s:

Starting Lineup

CF Billy Burns (.294/.334/.392, 5 HR, 42 RBI, 26 SB in 125 games)

Journal Entry #1

Season Preview
April 3, 2016

Hey guys, David here. This is my first journal entry, I’ll be doing these from time to time to give you my thoughts on anything and everything going on with the Oakland A’s and Major League baseball. Looks like those guys over at the Oakland Tribune really ripped into us this morning. Now granted, we don’t have the best team this year and we’ll probably lose more than we’ll win. But this is an exciting time to be an Oakland A’s fan. In 2013, 2014 and 2015 we made the playoffs and won 94, 96 and 88 games respectively. Not an easy feat for a team with a consistently low payroll. Sure, our team doesn’t look great on paper but what’s on paper today will not be what’s on paper on the day the season ends. You can take that one to the bank. I’m looking to get my own fingerprints on this team and Billy has given me tremendous freedom now to do what I think is right.

So now I’d just like to interject a few of my thoughts on the construction of this team.

Batters - Lineup

CF Billy Burns
1B Yonder Alonso
LF Khris Davis
RF Josh Reddick
3B Danny Valencia
C Stephen Vogt
DH Billy Butler
2B Chris Coghlan
SS Marcus Semien

Batters - Bench
C Josh Phegley
1B/LF Mark Canha
IF Jed Lowrie
CF Coco Crisp

My Thoughts: So the lineup isn’t exactly how I would’ve structured it, but I’m also not the Manager so we’ll just have to see how it goes. I’m hoping we’ll have some platoon work available for Mark Canha because he’s got solid power and I’d like for him to get at-bats since he drove in a bunch of runs for us last year. But the two guys I’d really like to see in the lineup are Coco Crisp and Jed Lowrie, especially since they make up close to 25% of our player payroll. Those two, along with Billy Butler are probably three of the biggest candidates to trade should we fall too far behind in the playoff race. The one thing I really like about our lineup this year is the flexibility we have in plugging many of our players in many different positions so that will be something to look for as we shape the future of our team.

Starting Rotation
RHP Sonny Gray (14-7, 2.73 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, 169 K in 208 IP)
RHP Kendall Graveman (6-9, 4.05 ERA, 1.42 WHIP, 77 K in 115.2 IP)
RHP Chris Bassitt (1-8, 3.56 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, 64 K in 86 IP)
RHP Jesse Hahn (6-6, 3.35 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, 64 K in 96.2 IP)
LHP Rich Hill (2-1, 1.55 ERA, 0.66 WHIP, 36 K in 29 IP w/ BOS)

Bullpen
CL Sean Doolittle (1-0, 4 saves, 3.95 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, 15 K in 13.2 IP)
SU Liam Hendriks (5-0, 2.92 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, 71 K in 64.2 IP w/ TOR)
SU Ryan Madson (1-2, 3 saves, 2.13 ERA, 0.96 WHIP, 58 K in 63.1 IP w/ KC)
RHP John Axford (4-5, 25 saves, 4.20 ERA, 62 K in 55.2 IP w/ COL)
LHP Marc Rzepczynski (2-4, 5.66 ERA, 1.54 WHIP, 41 K in 35 IP w/ SD & CLE)
RHP Fernando Rodriguez (4-2, 3.84 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, 65 K in 58.2 IP)
RHP Charles Brewer* (1-1, 2.92 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, 7 K in 12.1 IP in AA)

*Brewer was signed on 3/31/2016 to a 1-year/$700,000 contract. Felix Doubrant was placed on waivers and DFA’d to make room for him on the roster.

My Thoughts: Our bullpen is definitely one of our strengths as a team. Doolittle, Hendriks and Madson should make up one of the strongest back ends in the majors this season. And Axford, Scrabble and Rodriguez aren’t too shabby themselves. The problem will be getting them the ball with the lead. We really have no idea what we’re gonna get from our starters not named Sonny Gray. Rich Hill was a reliever, albeit an excellent one, last season. Chris Bassitt spent some of last season in the bullpen. Kendall Graveman only pitched 115 innings last season – a career high. And Jesse Hahn has never pitched over 100 innings in a season. So our rotation will really be a wild card this season. We’ve got some potential down in Triple A with our 2nd best prospect Sean Manaea almost ready for a call to the show and SP Zach Neal, who is a borderline major league SP but I’m hoping I do not have to make one of those calls this season.

Disabled List
SS Eric Sogard (60-day DL, strained groin, out 3 months)
RP Jarrod Parker (60-day DL, Tommy John surgery, out 4 months)
SP Henderson Alvarez (60-day DL, Tommy John surgery, out 2 months)
RP RJ Alvarez (60-day DL, elbow reconstruction surgery, out 2 months)
LF Sam Fuld (60-day DL, wrist soreness, out 6-7 months)

My Thoughts: Ouch! We had a lot of guys with big injuries entering the year. Parker and the Alvarez’s have the potential to shore up our rotation/bullpen in a few months. And Sogard could help improve our lineup when he returns but Fuld will probably not make any contributions this season. All in all, we shouldn’t count on anything from any of these guys and should look elsewhere for reinforcements.

Burns, Semien, Vogt Power A’s past White Sox in Opening Day Victory
April 5, 2016

The Oakland Athletics started the 2016 season win an impressive 7-4 win against the Chicago White Sox at O.co Coliseum. The A’s blasted three homeruns off of 4-time All-Star Chris Sale. Billy Burns started the scoring off in the first, with a leadoff solo homerun to tie the score at 1. Stephen Vogt then hit a two run shot to deep right field in the bottom of the fourth to knot the score at 3. And Marcus Semien added a solo shot as part of a 3-run 8th inning for the A’s, which extended their lead to 7-3 at the time.

The White Sox scored a run in each of the first three innings, but Sonny Gray got stronger as the game went on, allowing 8 hits, 2 walks and 3 runs while striking out 8 in 7 innings of work. He was named player of the game for his strong efforts. Bob Melvin then handed the ball off to Liam Hendriks, who struck out two in the 8th. Oakland ran into a bit of trouble in the 9th when Fernando Rodriguez allowed 2 hits and a run at which point Sean Doolittle had to come on to earn a 1-out save, his first of the year.

Josh Reddick aided the Oakland cause with a run-scoring walk in the bottom of the fifth. For the game, the right fielder went 2 for 4 with 2 singles and a walk.

"Obviously it’s nice to win the first one, but it’s a long season and we have many games to go," said Reddick. "We're already looking forward to the next game."

April A's Review

The Major League Baseball season is now in full swing! The Oakland A's finished the month of April with a 12-13 record and sit 6 games back of the Seattle Mariners for first place in the AL West division. Pitching has been a strong point for the A's thus far, A's starters rank 5th in the AL in ERA and the team ranks 4th in the AL in runs against. Their struggles can be attributed to an anemic offense that has scored only 97 runs (2nd worst in the AL) and has the worst batting average and on-base percentage in the American League. If there was ever a time to pull the trigger and get a bat, the time would be now before the team slips too far away from playoff contention.

However it seems as if there are no moves to be made in the immediate future. The Front Office has been extremely tight lipped about any potential movement within the organization and the only transaction that has occurred this season has been of necessity due to an injury. Fans and the media alike have been clamoring for a big move, but we will just have to wait and see. The good news? No other team has made a big move as of now also, so we may just be experiencing some beginning of the season radio silence, when General Managers typically hold their cards close to their chest and wait and see what they have in the rosters they have spent all offseason building.

Team Notes
-Sonny Gray is off to a great start. Sonny went 4-1 with a 2.74 ERA in 6 April starts. He struck out 41 batters (good for 2nd in the AL) while walking only 9 over the course of 46 innings. He has gotten a little roughed up in his last 2 starts (9 ER in his last 12.2 innings) so hopefully it’s just a rough patch and not a sign of things to come.
-Billy Burns suffered a torn thumb ligament on April 20th and will miss the entire month of May. He was hitting .241 with 1 HR, 3 RBI and 3 SB before the injury. LF/RF Jake Somolinski was called up to take his place on the roster but has not logged any at bats yet. Burns’ replacement Coco Crisp is hitting .137 with 2 HR and 6 RBI in 51 AB.
-The A’s bullpen is one of the bright spots for the team, ranking 3rd in the AL with a 3.11 ERA. The bullpen has been led by Liam Hendriks (16 K in 12 innings), Ryan Madson (0.47 WHIP in 12.2 innings), and John Axford (16 K in 14.2 innings). Closer Sean Doolittle has also been very good; closing out 7 games and has an ERA of 4.15. His ERA was inflated by a bad outing against Houston where he allowed 3 hits and 4 runs, but before that he had pitched 8 scorelss innings.
-No moves? David Forst made it very clear that the roster he started the season with was not going to be the roster he finished with. However, the team is largely the same with the only change coming due to an injury. It will be interesting to see if/how future roster moves will develop.

League Notes
4/17 – Milwaukee C Jonathan Lucroy fractured his thumb after being hit by a pitch and will miss 6 weeks.
4/18 – Toronto LF Kevin Pillar will miss the remainder of the season with a concussion.
4/25 – A big day of injuries. The following players were placed on the 15-day DL:
  • White Sox C Alex Avila (fractured wrist)
  • White Sox OF Adam Eaton (sprained ankle)
  • Kansas City Royals LF Alex Gordon (sprained ankle)
  • San Francisco Giants RF Hunter Pence (strained hamstring)
  • Washington Nationals RF Jayson Werth (strained hamstring)
Notable Transactions
4/9 – Cubs sign SP Mark Buerhle to a 1-year/$7.9 million contract.

4/29 – Brewers trade C Josmil Pinto to the Twins for SS Eduardo Nunez and $600,000.

Oakland Pulls Off Huge Deal with Bay Area Rival
May 21st, 2016

There's been much chatter in recent weeks from people around baseball about the lack of any significant transactions in the David Forst era of Oakland Athletics baseball. Fans were skeptical that Forst could pull off the same big, exciting move that Executive VP of Baseball Operations Billy Beane used to pull off during his heyday. However Forst's first trade sure is a doozy, as it was announced that 7 players would be moving between Oakland and San Francisco.

The Giants will receive CF Coco Crisp, 2B Chris Coghlan, SP Rich Hill and minor league SP Xavier Altamirano while the A's will receive CF Denard Span and minor league starters Clayton Blackburn and Ty Blach. This trade is seen by many within the league as highway robbery for Oakland. Not only does Oakland clear close to $20 million off the books for this season, but they also receive two top 50 prospects and a serviceable player in Denard Span.

Crisp (.196/.289/.393, 5 HR, 14 RBI) and Coghlan (.219/.270/.375, 3 HR, 9 RBI) will immediately become starters in a weak Giants outfield that's been decimated by injuries to Hunter Pence and Jarret Parker, while Rich Hill (2-4, 5.53 ERA) will be used to bolster a bullpen that ranks 10th in the National League. Hill is much more highly regarded coming out of the bullpen and his numbers should improve from that move. Altamirano will report to the Giants Dominican Rookie League team.

As mentioned earlier, it is believed that the Athletics received the better haul compared to the Giants. Denard Span (.294/.332/.439, 2 HR, 23 RBI, 6 SB) will take over CF duties and bat leadoff for the offensively challenged A's. He is seen as an upgrade over Crisp and is making a very affordable $3 million this season (his salary jumps to $9 million in the 2nd and 3rd years with a $12 million team option for the 4th). But the real prize is SP Clayton Blackburn who will join the Major League team tomorrow and is expected to make his first start in an Athletics uniform sometime in the next few days.

Blackburn made his major league debut earlier this season as an emergency starter with the Giants and pitched 8 innings, allowing 2 hits and 1 run while striking out 9. He had a 2.73 ERA in Triple-A Sacramento over 52.2 innings. His Triple-A teammate Ty Blach will hope to join him soon on the big league level as he was assigned to Triple-A Nashville. Blach is 2-2 with a 3.56 ERA in 9 starts at Triple-A this season. He is seen as a serviceable back end starter who doesn't have excellent stuff, but makes up for that with incredible control and movement on his pitches.

Jed Lowrie (.263/.284/.354) is expected to take back the starting second baseman job. He was originally platooning with Coghlan. In addition, the A's called up IF Josh Rodriguez to take the utility infielder role and OF Andrew Lambo to take over the backup outfielder role from Jake Smolinski.

Oakland A's May Recap
June 1, 2016

Team Notes
- The Athletics went 16-12 in the month of May and now sit 4 games out of first place in the AL West and 2.5 games out of the last wild card spot.
- The trade with the San Francisco Giants is already paying dividends. Denard Span is hitting .362 in 10 games since being acquired and has driven in 5 runs. Clayton Blackburn has had mixed results, with one really good start and one really bad start. He’s 1-1 with a 5.40 ERA over 11.2 innings since joining Oakland’s rotation.
- Sonny Gray is starting to build his case for the Cy Young Award. He went 4-0 in May with a 2.87 ERA and 0.96 WHIP. He struck out 34 batters and walked only 5 in 5 starts and 37.2 innings pitched. He’s tied for the league lead in Wins with 8, and has the 3rd most strikeouts in the American League, trailing only Corey Kluber and Chris Sale.

- Speaking of Khris Davis, he holds the team lead for homeruns with 10. He had a great month, hitting .255 with 8 homeruns and 21 RBI, along with 8 doubles. His hitting has been seen as the catalyst for Oakland’s winning ways.

-Three Athletics made the All-Star game. The aforementioned Gray was named the AL Starter for the game. CL Sean Doolittle (1-2, 26 saves, 1.57 ERA, 0.80 WHIP, 58 K in 40 IP) and C Stephen Vogt (.258/.319/.427, 10 HR, 40 RBI) were the other two A’s selected.
-SS Marcus Semien fractured his hip and will miss the remainder of the season. 2B Gordon Beckham, who was claimed off of waivers from the Atlanta Braves, replaced him. Since being claimed, Beckham has hit .267 with 3 HR and 8 RBI (60 AB).
-Trade Update: Denard Span is hitting .295 since being acquired from the Giants. He’s hit 4 HR, drove in 13 runs, scored 25 runs and has been an absolute sparkplug at the top of the lineup. Clayton Blackburn has been excellent since his acquisition, going 3-1 with a 3.71 ERA and 43 strikeouts in 51 innings.

League Notes
6/7 – Red Sox Xander Bogaerts ruptured his MCL and will miss 9-10 months.
7/1 – Cleveland Indians 2B Jason Kipnis diagnosed with a broken hand, will miss 3-4 months.
7/3 – Chicago Cubs RF Jason Heyward was injured while running the bases. He's expected to miss about 3-4 weeks.

O.Co Must Go

July 16th, 2016 | OPINION

In a day and age where every team is going bigger and better with their stadiums, the Oakland Athletics are stuck playing in what many deem one of the worst, if not the worst stadiums in Major League Baseball. It is the only remaining multi-purpose field in the MLB and, if you come to the stadium in late August and September, you will see infielders and outfielders dodging divots left behind from professional football games. Add in the lack of bullpens and the expansive foul territory and you get a sorry excuse for a baseball stadium, especially in this day and age. And don’t even get me started on the sewage backups in the dugouts and locker rooms. The stadium is sh**, both literally and figuratively and it is way past overdue for the Oakland Athletics to move into a new, baseball only facility.

Granted the stadium situation isn’t easy. The A’s just signed a 10-year lease with the Coliseum that will leave them in the stadium until 2024, unless they opt out after the 2017 season (they would still have to pay rent until the expiration of the lease). And Lew Wolff isn’t the type to part with his “hard earned cash”. Factor in that the team shares a facility with the Oakland Raiders, who have their own uncertain future after a failed move back to Los Angeles, and it becomes a very confusing situation here in Oakland.

There have been rumblings of an unknown billionaire who would be willing to purchase the A’s, move them out of the Coliseum, and build a brand new, state-of-the-art stadium. Except it’s unknown if Wolff would even be receptive to a move of those proportions. Only time will tell if anything get’s done. But I wouldn’t hold my breath.

Fire Sale: A’s Blow Up Roster at the Deadline, Look Towards the Future

August 1, 2016

Sitting just 6.5 games out of first place at the deadline, many were unsure whether the Athletics would be buyers or sellers. However after the barrage of trades pulled off by David Forst over the last week, it’s clear which direction the A’s are going. Forst pulled off four blockbuster deals to catapult the Athletics to the 4th best-ranked minor league system in the league, according to the Baseball News Network. Forst promised a different roster and he sure delivered. He shipped 12 players out of Oakland in total while bringing in 9 players, many among the top prospects in the league.

He kicked off the trading frenzy with a deal on July 25th. Forst sent RF Josh Reddick, 2B Joey Wendle (AAA), and SP Raul Alcantara (A) to Cleveland for CF Clint Frazier (A), SP Mike Clevinger (AAA) and SP Ryan Merrit (AA). Frazier was the crown jewel of the deal and projects to be an All-Star caliber CF with lots of power. The 21-year old’s lone weakness is his strikeout rate, but he should improve it with more seasoning in the minors. Clevinger has middle of the rotation potential, and has gone 7-6 with a 4.14 ERA this season in AAA with the Indians. The 25-year old could make his Major League debut this fall if he plays his cards right. If not, he will be looking for a roster spot come spring training. Last but not least is Ryan Merrit, who is a fringe prospect who has a shot to make the big league roster. Despite his role as a starter in the minors, his most likely path to the bigs would come through a bullpen spot.

Reddick became a hot commodity when it became apparent that the A’s were not going to be in playoff contention this season and when it was announced he would be looking for a long-term deal with an annual value of more than $15 million per year. The A’s will still have the ability to sign him back should he reach free agency, but this deal looks like a better return than the compensation they would receive after extending a qualifying offer.

The final three trades occurred on the last day of the season in the final minutes. These trades were likely discussed in the weeks prior to the deadline, but didn’t gain traction until the A’s decided to go into full fire sale mode.

Trade 2: Oakland trades 3B Danny Valencia, SP Chris Bassitt and C Bryan Anderson (AAA) to Kansas City for SS Raul Mondesi (AA) and SP Garrett Davila (R).

Despite having the tools to do so, Valencia just wasn’t getting the job done in Oakland after they claimed him on waivers in the off-season from the Blue Jays. He was hitting just .205 with 9 HR and 37 RBI and there were rumors the Athletics might decline to offer him arbitration this offseason. The A’s were able to get younger here in acquiring Raul Mondesi, who’s already a gold glove caliber shortstop with blazing speed. Some scouts even say could be a .310 hitter when all is said and done. The A’s also got 19-year old Garrett Davila, who projects to be a #2 or #3 starter in 4-5 seasons. He was drafted by the Royals in the 4th round out of South Point (NC) High School in the 2015 amateur draft. Bassitt had been pitching incredibly well for the A’s, but that’s just the price that has to be paid when acquiring good, young talent.

Trade 3: Oakland trades DH Billy Butler to the Houston Astros for C/DH Evan Gattis and 1B AJ Reed (AAA).

This trade was almost purely a salary dump. The Athletics were able to unload the underperforming Butler’s nearly $15 million commitment for this year and next. In return, they got Evan Gattis who can take Butler’s spot in the lineup. Gattis is due to make $5.2 million next season should the A’s pick up his option, but will owe him only this years remaining $1.7 million should they let him walk. Add in power hitting 23-year old 1B AJ Reed and the A’s most certainly won this trade as well. An anonymous front office executive said that Reed is a cleanup hitter in the making that could bat .270 and hit 30 homeruns.

Trade 4: Oakland trades MR John Axford, MR Ryan Madson, SP Zach Neal (AAA), 1B Mark Canha (AAA) and C Jose Rivas (R) to the Tigers for LF Christin Stewart (A) and SP Beau Burrows (A).

Another big salary dump, the A’s were able to unload over $20 million in future commitments to two aging relief pitchers and in return got a couple prospects with high ceilings. Neal, Canha and Rivas were additional throw-ins that were removed from the A’s plans after all the other high profile moves that were made. Christin Stewart has the makings of a very good role player and left-handed bat off the bench, while 19-year old Beau Burrows has star potential written all over him. Burrows was the 22nd overall pick in the 2015 draft, and has quickly catapulted himself all the way up to low-A ball where he sports a 4.08 ERA and 1.42 WHIP in 22 starts. He could very well be the best prospect acquired this deadline when looked back up in 10-15 seasons.

Some additional housekeeping:
  • With the subtractions, the Athletics’ salary commitments for this season dropped to $45.8 million. They are projected to be $65.7 million, leaving plenty of room for a free agent signing or two.
  • With all of the moves, a boatload of roster spots opened up. To fill the roster, the A’s selected SP Felix Doubrount, RP Henderson Alvarez & RP Aaron Kurcz to fill out the bullpen and LF Andrew Lambo and IF Josh Rodriguez to complete their lineup.

A’s Hanging Around as Calendar Turns to September and Kids Get the Call

September 1, 2016

The calendar has changed from August to September, the kids are headed back to school and the A’s are still in playoff contention. Wait, the A’s are still in playoff contention? Well yes and no. The A’s are in 4th place, 7 games out of first place with a 66-67 record after going 15-13 in the month of August. So it’s still a longshot, but with 16 games against the teams they are trailing (Houston, Seattle, Los Angeles) it’s not impossible either. The Baseball News Network gives them just a 0.7% chance of making the postseason, but a quick little winning streak could quickly change those percentages to be more favorable towards the A’s chances.

They’ll have to do it without Closer Sean Doolittle who ruptured a tendon in his finger on August 7th and will miss the remainder of the season. But the rest of the bullpen has really picked up the slack. Since the injury to Doolittle, Liam Hendriks is 7-7 in save opportunities and has lowered his ERA to 3.19. And rookie Aaron Kurcz is 3-1 with 2 saves and a 0.90 ERA in 20 innings since being called up at the trade deadline. Felix Doubrount, brought on to be the 5th starter after the departure of Chriss Bassitt, has been steady making 5 starts with an ERA of 4.45 and WHIP of 1.45.

Some hitters have also picked up the slack and outperformed the guys dealt at the deadline. Andrew Lambo hit 9 homeruns and drove in 18 runs after becoming the everyday RF after the trade deadline. And Khris Davis continues to mash, he has 29 homeruns and 90 RBI’s this season, which places him in the upper echelon of hitters in the American League. Help is also on the way in the form of 3B Matt Chapman and OF Jake Smolinski. Chapman is likely to get plenty of at bats at third base this month after hitting 23 homeruns and driving in 75 runs between AA and AAA this season.

While the season has not been one for the history books, it’s great to see that the young A’s have some fight in them and are not going to roll over and die easily. It’s really a testament to the way David Forst and Bob Melvin have built and managed this team and with the additions made at the trade deadline, it’s an exciting time to be an A’s fan once again.

Streaking! A’s Host First Place Astros Just 1 Game Out of First Place

September 16, 2016

The Oakland A’s, who on September 1st were in 4th place 7 games out of first place, are now 1 game out of first and in 2nd place as they open up a three game series with the first place Houston Astros. This is a pivotal series for the young Oakland squad, who was pronounced dead by almost every analyst in the industry. Oakland has been on an absolute tear, going 13-3 to start the month of September and jumping both the Los Angeles Angels and Seattle Mariners and now sit on the precipice of jumping the Astros as well.

The team started off the month taking two of three from the Red Sox, thanks to a pair of strong pitching performances from Sonny Gray and Felix Doubront. The team then went on a 6-game winning streak, sweeping both the Angels and the Mariners on the backs of gems by whatever member of the starting rotation took the mound that night. After dropping one to the Royals Oakland rattled off another 5 wins in a row, this time with the bats coming alive. Yesterday, the Texas Rangers handed the team just their third loss of the month.

The offense this month has been unreal. Five players this month are hitting over .300 – Khris Davis (.371, 8 2B, 6 HR, 14 RBI), Jed Lowrie (.360, 5 2B, 6 RBI), Eric Sogard (.358, 2 HR, 8 RBI), Andrew Lambo (.321, 8 HR, 15 RBI) and Yonder Alonso (.302, 1 HR, 8 RBI).

And here we are, with a pivotal three game set against the division leaders. The A’s will have to do it against Houston’s top three starters as well – Colin McHugh, Patrick Corbin and Doug Fister. Meanwhile, Oakland will trot out Kendall Graveman, Felix Doubront and Clayton Blackburn. Whatever ends up happening the rest of the way, it’s very impressive what this A’s team has done after everyone counted them out.

A’s Sneak Into Playoffs On Final Day After 3-2 Win, Astros Loss

October 3, 2016

They did it! The Oakland Athletics went 21-8 down the stretch and snuck into the playoffs ahead of the Houston Astros on the last day of the season. There was jubilation in the air when Liam Hendriks closed out a 3-2 win against the Seattle Mariners for his 18th save of the season and for good reason – the team knew they had survived another day and at least earned themselves a shot at a 1-game playoff with Houston. But that playoff would never come, as the Astros suffered a 4-2 loss at the hands of division rival Los Angeles Angels.

Oakland will now face familiar face Josh Reddick and the Cleveland Indians in the ALDS. Oakland went 4-2 against Cleveland during the regular season. Game 1 will see two of the AL’s best pitchers square off. Sonny Gray (19-9, 2.56 ERA, 245 K) who came 3 strikeouts away from the AL Pitcher’s Triple Crown will take the mound against Corey Kluber (17-9, 2.68 ERA, 229 K) who jockeyed with Gray all season for the ERA crown.

Oakland Comes Back From 2-0 Deficit, Defeats Indians in 5
October 14, 2016

The Oakland Athletics completed their comeback last night, defeating the Cleveland Indians in a 2-1 nail biter. The A’s dropped their first two games of the ALDS in Cleveland, losing Game 1 by the score of 3-2 and Game 2 by the score of 5-2. With their backs against the wall, took the series back to Oakland and defeated the Indians by scores of 9-3 and 8-7. With the series tied at 2 a piece, the ALDS came down to a one game playoff.

Kendal Graveman took the mound for the Athletics while Carlos Carrasco took to the bump for the Indians. And this matchup was a pitchers duel from the start. Graveman started off shaky, allowing 4 singles and 1 run in the first inning. But he finished strong, allowing 4 hits and 0 runs for the remainder of the game. Carlos Carrasco pitched just as well, if not better. He allowed a sac fly in the third inning and an RBI groundout in the fifth inning and just 4 hits all game. But the A’s just got timely hits and productive outs, which let them eek out, a 1 run win.

Denard Span earned the series MVP award; he hit .364 with 1 HR, 2 RBI with 4 runs scored. Span added, “We’re lucky to be going to the League Championship Series. If all the series’ are like this, it will definitely be an exciting postseason.”

The A’s are set to face off against the Toronto Blue Jays tomorrow. The A’s went 1-5 against Toronto this season. Sonny Gray (19-9, 2.56 ERA) will face off against Marcus Stroman (10-5, 4.08 ERA).

World Series Bound! Oakland Defeats Toronto in 5!
October 21, 2016

The Oakland Athletics have continued the magical run they’ve been on since the calendar turned to September, this time dispatching the Toronto Blue Jays easily in 5 games. Sonny Gray and Clayton Blackburn shut down the Blue Jays high-powered offense in Games 1 & 2, winning 4-3 and 7-3 respectively. The Jays then took Game 3 by a score of 6-3. Oakland then handed the ball to their top duo of Gray and Blackburn, who once again shut down the Blue Jays offense with victories of 4-3 and 2-1.

Thanks to his strong efforts on the mound, Clayton Blackburn won the ALCS MVP Award. Blackburn went 11 innings, allowing 7 hits, 6 walks and struck out 11 batters in two starts. And Gray was almost just as good. He went 1-0 in two starts, allowing 15 hits, 3 walks and 5 runs over 13.2 innings (he also struck out 11).

On the offensive side, Andrew Lambo hit .286 with 2 homeruns and 4 RBI’s, Denard Span went 9-21 (.429) with 1 RBI and Evan Gattis hit .333 (7-21) with 3 RBI’s.

The A’s now will take on the Washington Nationals (96-66) in the World Series, a feat thought impossible by baseball people just 2 months ago. The Nationals are expected to be huge favorites and sport an impressive rotation of Stephen Strasburg (16-7, 2.78 ERA), Gio Gonzalez (11-11, 3.88 ERA) and Lucas Giolito (7-9, 2.91 ERA). Strasburg will take on Kendall Graveman (7-14, 4.72 ERA) in Game 1 tomorrow night in Oakland.

Nats Put Oakland on the Ropes After Taking 3-0 Series Lead
October 24, 2016

The Washington Nationals are on the precipice of history after jumping out to a 3-0 series lead. Pitching has been the story for the Nationals. They shut out Oakland in Games 1 & 2 by scores of 3-0 and 1-0 behind strong pitching performances by Stephen Strasburg and Lucas Giolito. They finally allowed a pair of runs in Game 3, but were still able to take Game 3 by the score of 5-2.

The Nationals will send Stephen Strasburg out to the mound for game 4. If he fails, they will have three other chances to close out the series. However with no offense at all, it looks like the A's magical run is coming to a close.

A's Force a Game 7 as Tables Turn
October 30th, 2016

One week ago, the Oakland Athletics looked cooked. Down three games to none with only 2 runs scored in 3 games, the magic looked like it had finally run out on the A's as the Nationals were poised for the series sweep. But boy have the fortunes turned.

The change of fate happened one game, and one inning at a time. In game 4, Oakland catcher Stephen Vogt powered the A's offense with 2 solo homeruns and Kendall Gravemen gave the A's 6 innings of 1-run baseball on their way to an upset win over stud Stephen Strasburg and the Nationals

In game 5 Oakland's bats finally came alive, scoring 6 runs off of Nationals rookie SP Lucas Giolito. The offense spread over 5 players who each drove in 1 run: Andrew Lambo, Stephen Vogt, Yonder Alonso, Gordan Beckham and Eric Sogard. Potential Cy Young Award winner Sonny Gray pitched an excellent game in his final start of the season, allowing 8 hits and 2 runs over 7 innings and earning a 6-3 win, his 2nd of the postseason.

Game 6 saw a fantastic performance from the A's bullpen. After Clayton Blackburn left the game after 5 innings of 2-run ball, the A's bullpen shut down the Nationals offense and allowed just 3 baserunners in 4 innings. Jed Lowrie provided the offensive spark, blasting 2 homeruns to give the A's a 3-2 victory.

Do the A's have any magic left in the tank? We'll see tomorrow as Kendall Graveman will face off against Stephen Strasburg for the 3rd time this series. Strasburg got the win in game 1 and Graveman got the win in game 2, making this the ultimate game 7 rubber match.

IMPROBABLE! OAKLAND A'S CHAMPIONS OF BASEBALL
October 31, 2016

THE OAKLAND A'S ARE WORLD CHAMPIONS FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 1989! The team that was given a 0.7% chance of making the playoffs on September 1st shocked the world and delivered one of the most improbably runs in Major League Baseball history. The team went 21-8 over the last 29 games of the Major League season before coming back from a 2-0 deficit in the ALDS against Cleveland, taking a 4-1 series win over Toronto and then coming back from a 3-0 deficit to win the Championship game against Washington!

All of this comes after a fire sale at the trade deadline which shipped out RF Josh Reddick, DH Billy Butler, 3B Danny Valencia, SP Chris Bassitt, MR John Axford and MR Ryan Madson. They were replaced by guys like RF Andrew Lambo, DH Evan Gattis, 3B Gordon Beckham, SP Felix Doubront, MR Aaron Kurcz and MR Fernando Rodriguez. Not to mention that SS Marcus Semien and Closer Sean Doolittle suffered season ending injuries throughout the year and had to be repalced by SS Eric Sogard and CL Liam Hendriks.

The team's payroll at end of season sat at $46.8, the lowest in the MLB taking Moneyball to a new extreme. The team they defeated in the World Series had a payroll of almost $100 million more. And General Manager David Forst was able to do something that Billy Beane could never do: win a World Series.

The Game 7 win did not come easy though. Kendall Gravemen went only 5 innings and allowed 2 runs, leaving much of the game up to a tired A's bullpen. But the A's offense got cooking, scoring 4 runs off of All-Star Stephen Strasburg in the same 5 innings. That would be enough for the A's to take the win and the series, as Felix Doubront delivered 3 innings of 1-hit ball and Liam Hendriks pitched a scoreless 9th in a non-save, save situation. The big blows to the Nats came via the longball. Andrew Lambo delivered a huge 3-run homerun in the 1st, which was enough to win the game outright and then Jed Lowrie deliverd the final cushion wit a 2-run homerun in the 8th inning.

The victory gave the A's franchise their 10th World Series win and their 5th victory in Oakland. Catcher Stephen Vogt was named World Series MVP.
