"Free agents" in sortable stats

So I was looking through the sortable player stats for my league (Phi Eta, Class A) when I noticed that there were a number of players (some of them quite good) with no team listed. Right-clicking on them revealed a "Sign Player" option. As much as I would appreciate the free players, I suspect this is not supposed to be happening.

It doesn't actually do anything and one of the devs said it will be removed soon. You can't sell the card you "sign" or put it on the AH or put it in your lineup. When new data is downloaded, they disappear.

Ah, cool -- I had seen a couple similar cases in this forum, but they were related to cards that had been sold by the person asking the question, not random cards hanging out in the league stats. (Which, now that I think of it, might have been sold by other people in the league? Who knows?)

These are inactive cards that did get playing time earlier in the year.
