Historic relievers
I'm running a team with no Live players. I am having trouble finding good relievers. What non Live relievers have you guys been having success with?

For the purposes of this discussion, are we ignoring starters in relief roles?
I have gotten very good production out of both the 2016 Zach Britton (88 Ovr, Lefty) and the 1927 Wilcy Moore (88 Ovr, 41 Stamina)

Wilcy is a monster in relief up through Diamond in my experience. My FTP team with him loves him.

Speaking of monsters, Dick Radatz has been great for me.

for a 'your mileage may vary' flip side view.... I picked up Wilcy Moore for my Gold league pre-ww2 team, hoping he would be a solid reliever/closer for the squad... in 2 seasons, he blew more games than he saved, had a record of something like 4-22 and was abysmal.... needless to say, he's no longer with the team... glad to know someone has had some luck with him. |

Let's consider starters in relief roles too. Ideally looking up to the 3K PP range. Cheaper the better.

Dierker has been great for me as a reliever in Diamond. He gets a bit of a stuff increase when you make him a reliever, which certainly doesn´t hurt, and has been very reliable from season to season.

3K for a reliable reliever at the higher levels is a bit of a tall order. I was all set to recommend Papelbon or Nathan or Diaz or Treinen.
For less money I haven't found too many that do well at Perfect or Diamond. At least consistently. So far (knock on wood) Osuna has been OK for me at perfect for a silver. But admittedly I'm running him in "avoid high leverage" mode. I've had mixed results with all the Riveras but the only one I'd consider is the 86 overall and he isn't cheap. Same mixed results with Britton. If I was determined to find a guy at 3k or less I think I'd try to find a starter with very good control and decent stuff and movement, and see if changing him to a reliever bumped up his stuff a little bit. Check the thread DonkeyKong started with the database and see if any guys there appeal to you. I've had great success using Corbin as a reliever over the seasons, for some reason he just seems to excel for me there vs being a starter. Dierker on the other hand has never worked well for me in either role despite the fact others DO seem to have success with him. John Smoltz 96 is hit or miss at perfect as a starter, but he's been phenomenal for me as a reliever. I'd experiment with starters. I've started running Aaron Bummer (silver live) as a lefty specialist and so far (again knock on wood) pretty good... |

Vic Raschi and Mark Langston (both 85/50/50 out of 80 as RP) have been tearing up my current Silver league. Dunno how they'll fare against tougher competition, but fwiw I haven't really found what I'd consider a good replacement in the affordable/non-rare gold range. Bob Turley also has some nice stats (90/50/45 as RP) but I haven't really had a chance to try him with Raschi killing it.

There are actually quite a lot of good options, the main problem is their cost. Good historical relievers can cost 20k pp or so.
Rollie Fingers Satchel Paige Trevor Hoffman Mo Rivera (86 is the best one affordable to mortals) Robb Nen Brian Wilson Zack Britton (not the live one) Tug McGraw Hersh Freeman Those come to mind as the ones that have been consistently successful for me through diamond. I don't think there is such a thing as relievers that are consistently good in perfect. Not affordable ones anyway. |
