1897 Preseason Predictions

Another offseason was in the books for Ephraim. The kids were all another year older, as was Ephraim, who would soon be 42. Life was crazy and hectic and just when Ephraim thought it couldn't get any crazier, Irene let him know she was pregnant.....again. After getting the news, Ephraim had to step out and get some fresh air. They already had eight kids. Where were they going to put another? Well, after a drink and some time to reflect, Ephraim just took his dad's advice, figuring if it was meant to be, it was meant to be. Ephraim's dad, James, was thrilled to hear the news, as was Ephraim's mom, Fannie. The parents were getting older as well, with James getting ready to turn 75 in a month and Fannie at 65. But both were thrilled to be able to spoil yet one more grandchild.

Ephraim was happy they were there for the kids. Irene's parents were both gone. Her mother passed when she was just an infant, while her father passed when she was just 16. Irene didn't like to talk about it, but the tragedy was worse than that, as all four of Irene's older sisters died with their dad in a house fire. Irene was at her Aunt Nancy's house at the time and after the fire, it's where she stayed until she left for college. Irene never really got past the survivor's guilt, but she used it to make the most of the time she had with her family, savoring every day as if it was her last. Ephraim saw strength in Irene from that experience, although she didn't see it herself.

With a new season upon the CBA, Ephraim was glad to see spring arriving and games getting ready to be played. Ten teams had joined the association, making scheduling even more difficult for him. But when it was all said and done, it all came together, as it always seemed to do. The sportswriters were writing about baseball once again and making their yearly predictions as to what would happen. Brown and Dartmouth are the favorites to take the New England Region crown and Rutgers is the slim favorite to win the Northeast Region. In the Atlantic Region, Navy is a narrow favorite over Lafayette, while Mississippi State looks to be the star for the Southeast Region. Northwestern is the overwhelming favorite to win the Great Lakes Region while defending champ Illinois State looks to be a playoff contender. Iowa State is favored to win the Midwest Region and California is predicted to win the Pacific. Louisiana State, the preseason #1, is considered an easy favorite in the Southwest Region while Chicago is a slim favorite over Michigan to win the Western Conference.

I actually borrowed it from Nick Soulis, who I believe got it from a friend. You can find the original doc in his Excellence Project post, which is a ranking of the all-time greatest teams. It's easy to find and is in the first few posts. This link will take you to it or you can find it in the dynasty reports.

I just modified the formula in the spreadsheet to accommodate what I needed with a shorter season. But the formula is mostly the same. I tweaked the bonus points in the playoffs and keep the bonus points in my calculations for preseason rankings. I actually rank all of the teams with the spreadsheet, but generally only report the Top 25.

Thanks for reading!

March 1897 Recap

Opening Day is known for outstanding performances and this one was no different. The CBA season started on March 2nd, as 68 teams started their 1897 journey toward the Collegiate Championship Series. Pitchers dominated the day, as three teams threw shutouts to start their year. Senior Greg Wodrich got Dartmouth on the right path, as he and the Big Green blanked Wisconsin 11-0. Northwestern ace, senior Joe Tucker, tossed a 2-0, 2-hit shutout against Furman, and junior Evan Russell, who transferred from Wake Forest to Duke, got the Blue Devils' program started right with a 2-0 victory over Chicago. At the plate, only one player made headlines, as Cornell junior first baseman Greg Marsing went 5-for-6 against Lehigh. Unfortunately for the Big Red, the Mountain Hawks overcame Marsing's hitting and won the game 10-6.

The pitchers definitely had the upper hand to start the season, with 58 shutouts recorded versus 20 notable hitting performances. But while individual performances are notable, it was one team's performance in particular that captured the attention of everyone in college baseball. The Northwestern Wildcats completed the month of March without a loss, starting out their season at 22-0. Needless to say, the Wildcats rose to the top of the CBA ranks, as the Top 25 had it's usual shuffle of teams thanks to hot starts and preseason hype. Ephraim had his hands full thanks to three separate incidents involving player conduct. On March 13th, Fordham senior center fielder Sal Lopez got into a heated argument with the home plate umpire over a called third strike. That argument cost Lopez two games. The following day, South Carolina and Mississippi had a benches-clearing brawl which led to the ejection of two players. Junior pitcher Mike Ford of the Gamecocks was suspended nine games for his involvement in the incident, while the Rebels lost the services of senior right fielder David Pizzo for four games. Just a few days later, on March 17th, the "St. Patrick's Day Brawl", as was noted in a local newspaper, occurred between Ohio and Lehigh. Bobcats' senior second baseman Aaron Moody was suspended for two games, while Mountain Hawks freshman pitcher Bill Lacey was given a four-game sentence.

In injury news, the California Bears took a huge hit with the loss of senior first baseman Kelly Slifka. Slifka suffered a torn labrum, bringing an end to not only his season but potentially his collegiate career. Since the injury occurred on Opening Day, the Bears have petitioned the Commissioner's Office to allow Slifka to play again in 1898. California also lost JUCO transfer Jerry Vasquez for the season. The sophomore tore a calf muscle midway through the month which will take four months to heal. Virginia also had a major injury, losing junior left fielder Josh Bradfield to a broken bone in his elbow. In 18 games, Bradfield was hitting .373.

Rookie of the Month went to Alabama JUCO transfer Jack "Red" Powell. The junior posted a 7-1 record and 2.31 ERA in his first month in the CBA. Joe Tucker continued to pitch well for Northwestern, as witnessed by their start, and was awarded the Pitcher of the Month award. Tucker was 8-0 with a 1.75 ERA. The Batter of the Month honor went to USC sophomore Edwin Burgos. The third baseman from Amherst, New York hit .424 with three homers and 29 RBI.

April 1897 Recap

Ephraim knew the rule well, as did everyone else. Four years of eligibility for all players, whether they played one game or sixty in a season. But this time, the University of California was asking for an exception to the eligibility rule for their injured first baseman, Kelly Slifka. Calling it a "hardship waiver", university President Darren Moore believed Slifka should be allowed to play another season with the team, as he sustained a season-ending injury in the first game of the year. At a hearing at his office in New York, Ephraim heard arguments both for and against the waiver. Some in the CBA office believed it to be unfair to other players in the past who had lost eligibility. Others felt this was a unique circumstance in which an injury and not a decision by a coach, kept the player off the field. The decision was made even more difficult, as Slifka had become a popular player nationally and the media was covering the request thoroughly. After consulting with the Board of Presidents, the decision was made to grant a hardship waiver to Slifka. However, it was announced as well that any future hardship waivers had to be approved by the CBA Board of Presidents and the Commissioner of the CBA.

Unfortunately, Ephraim had more work to do regarding disciplining players. On April 21st, in a game between Wofford and Mississippi State, Bulldogs pitcher Cameron "Zombie" Brown had just given up a three-run homer in the 4th inning of the game to lose his shutout. Nevertheless, Mississippi State still led the game 10-3. But his second pitch to Wofford second baseman Rich Rucker hit the sophomore. Rucker charged the mound and the benches cleared! Given the facts presented to him, Ephraim suspended Rucker for four games, while Brown was suspended for nine.

Pitching continued to dominate the headlines in April, with 57 shutouts tossed versus only 14 notable hitting performances. As an example of the dominance of pitching in the CBA, three pitchers won their 50th career game this month. The first was on April 16th by Lehigh senior Kevin DeVries in a 9-5 win at Mountaineers Ballpark against West Virginia. The win improved DeVries' career record to 50-19 and a 2.83 career ERA. Nine days later, and after DeVries had pushed his career wins to 52, two other CBA pitchers reached the milestone. Northwestern senior Joe Tucker achieved the mark by pitching a 4-0 shutout at home against Notre Dame. Tucker's career numbers on that day improved to 50-22 and a 2.72 ERA. Washington State senior Brad Hutchison gained his milestone win in a 12-6 victory at USC, where the Cougars broke a tie by scoring six runs over the final two innings of the game. Hutchison's career mark also sat at 50-22 and a 3.38 ERA.

Northwestern's incredible winning streak to start the season ended after a 25-0 start, as they lost to Lehigh 4-1 on April 6th. The Wildcats started another streak, however, and continued to play well, going 16-5 for the month and ending the month with a record of 38-5. Other teams weren't faring so well this month. Georgetown finished the month with a mirrored season record of 5-38. Tempers in Mount Pleasant, Michigan were running high halfway through the month, as the Central Michigan Chippewas recorded their 20th straight loss. The local college paper reported Central Michigan Chippewas' fans were "visibly shocked" by their team's inability to win. "This is an outrage", said Bob Johnson, a longtime Central Michigan Chippewas season ticket holder. "These guys are a disgrace. It is beyond obvious that they don't even care about the fans at this point. I guess they are just showing up to not go to classes or not study. Hopefully, they study their classwork better than they play baseball." Central Michigan Chippewas Manager, Nate Bauer, appeared to be at his breaking point during the post-game press conference. "I'm sick and tired of dumb questions! Embarrassed? Of course, I'm embarrassed. These guys call themselves collegiate athletes but they play like little leaguers." Ephraim just chuckled at the comments and figured that it was just a matter of time before Bauer lost his job. How do you expect your players to play for you when you call them out in the press?

Stanford freshman pitcher Matt Stephens won Rookie of the Month with a 7-0 mark in April. For the season, Stephens is 10-4 with a 4.23 ERA. Michigan senior John Roter was the CBA's Pitcher of the Month after going 6-1 with a 0.99 ERA. On the year, Roter is 9-5 with an ERA of 2.05. Batter of the Month honors went to Dartmouth senior John Anderson. For the month, Anderson hit .379, with two home runs, 29 RBI, and 28 runs scored. Anderson is hitting .391 for the season, with five homers, 48 RBI, and 49 runs scored in 43 games.

May 1897 Recap

Pitching continued to dominate the headlines in the CBA in May while hitting headlines declined for the third straight month. To put the pitching dominance in the CBA in recent years into perspective, two more pitchers reached the 50 win milestone. On May 9th, senior Wayne Erickson of Illinois State achieved the mark after the Redbirds defeated Michigan State by the score of 11-3. The win put Erickson's win-loss record at 14-2 with a 2.91 ERA. He would win his final three starts as well, finishing the regular season at 17-2 and lowering his ERA to 2.63. For his career, Erickson is 53-22 with a 3.41 ERA in 82 starts. A second pitcher joined the 50 win club on May 16th. Michigan senior John Roter claimed the milestone after the Wolverines pulled out a win over Chicago 8-6. The win pushed Roter's mark to 13-5, which he would keep as he got a no-decision in his final start of the year. Roter finished up his collegiate career at 50-29 with a 3.01 ERA. Additionally, the 7th no-hitter in CBA history was thrown this month and on the final day of the season, no less. Ole Miss senior Ian Renfro tossed the no-no, thanks to the Rebel defense, as Renfro walked one and struck out none in a 1-0 win at home against Alabama. The game ended on a walk-off single in the bottom of the 9th.

With all the talk of pitcher dominance, though, five batters still managed to finish the season hitting over .400. Dartmouth senior right fielder "Honest John" Anderson finished fifth at .401. A full-time starter from the moment he came to college, Anderson led the CBA in triples in every one of his four seasons. He set a new single-season record for triples with 39. Anderson also led the CBA this year in slugging percentage (.810), OBPS (1.249), and total bases (196), all of which are new single-season records. "Honest John" also set new career marks in the CBA for runs scored (230), total bases (716), triples (139), and runs batted in (215). Syracuse junior left fielder Brett Sipos hit .409 to finish 4th in the batting race. USC senior right fielder Frank Osborne finished 3rd with a .410 batting average. Vanderbilt senior Marco "Rats" Rios was the runner-up with a .411 batting average. USC senior left fielder Brian "Poison" Williams was the 1897 batting champion, finishing the year with an incredible .421 average. As crazy as it sounds, however, it's only good enough for 7th on the all-time CBA record books.

Ephraim had to issue disciplinary suspensions again this month. He was noticing a trend among the brawls as well. Pitcher gives up a home run and plunks the next batter out of frustration. On May 9th, real-life came to the CBA in the form of the Harvard-Yale rivalry. Leading 1-0 in the 2nd inning, Yale junior Jimmy Stevens gave up a two-run home run to Harvard sophomore center fielder Jonathan Pye. Two pitches later, the ball hit sophomore third baseman Kevin Golden. Golden charged the mound and the benches cleared! Golden was suspended four games while Stevens was given an eight-game suspension. Ephraim struggled with how to best handle these situations, as it was becoming increasingly evident that suspensions weren't stopping the brawls from happening.

Another thing Ephraim couldn't seem to prevent was controversy regarding which teams should or should not be in the playoffs. He was afraid it was an issue that would never be solved. As the season drew to a close, five teams (Drake, Yale, Washington State, VMI, and Georgia) finished in a tie for the final two wild card positions with records of 36-24. Ephraim quickly created a group in the Commissioner's Office to review which teams should play a 61st regular-season game and get into the post-season. In the end, Georgia was left on the outside looking in. This, of course, infuriated Bulldog fans, who saw their team surge at the end of the season to a 13-4 mark in May. However, based on the CBA team rankings, Georgia was ranked the lowest of the five schools. So, on May 25th, Drake traveled to Yale and Washington State visited VMI. Drake topped Yale 5-2, breaking a tie with three runs in the 7th. VMI had no problems handling Washington State, winning the game easily 5-1.

At the end of the season, Notre Dame decided they were tired of losing and fired Athletic Director Roger Miller and Manager Marcus Roberts. In five seasons with the Irish, Roberts' record at the helm was 126-173. Roberts only had one winning season with the team in 1894. The end of the month awards were awarded with the conclusion of the regular season. May Rookie of the Month honors were given to Wisconsin freshman pitcher Ken Anderson. Anderson was 5-1 for the month with a 1.26 ERA. Northwestern junior Adam Todd earned May's Pitcher of the Month award. Todd was 6-0 in six starts and compiled a 1.33 ERA. Georgia junior center fielder Walter Thornton was named Batter of the Month for May after hitting .452, 1 homer, 15 RBI, and 21 runs scored. Thornton drew 15 walks for an on-base percentage of .564.

With the 61st games in the books, the playoffs are now set. #19 Princeton (35-25), winner of the Northeast Region, will challenge #1 Northwestern (51-9). The Wildcats set a new high mark for wins, breaking the old mark of 49 wins, which was held by the 1879 Villanova team. Northwestern is the champion of the Great Lakes Region, winning it by 10 games. #12 Michigan (39-21), the Western Conference champion, will travel to #9 Lehigh to face the Atlantic Region champion Mountain Hawks (39-21). #11 Howard (37-23), the runner-up in the Atlantic, is on the road against New England champion #3 Dartmouth Big Green (41-19). #13 Vermont (37-23), who finished 2nd in the New England Region, will travel to #4 and defending CBA champion Illinois State (41-19). The Redbirds finished 2nd in the Great Lakes Region this season. #14 Drake (37-24), who finished 3rd in the Midwest Region, will play regional rival #6 Nebraska (41-19), winner of the Midwest. The two teams played six times in the regular season, with each team winning three games. #8 Northern Iowa (39-21), who finished 2nd in the Midwest Region, travels to #5 Vanderbilt (41-19) to face the Commodores, winners of the Southeast Region. Pacific Region champion #10 USC (39-21) is on the road to face #7 Alabama (40-20), the runner-up in the Southeast Region. Finally, #18 VMI (37-24), who finished 3rd in the Atlantic Region, travels to #2 LSU (44-16) to face the Southwest Region champ.

#19 Princeton Tigers (35-25) vs. #1 Northwestern Wildcats (51-9)

Northwestern's Joe Tucker pitched as everyone expected him to for the first three innings, sitting all of the Tiger's hitters down in order. It looked to be more of the same in the 4th, as Princeton was down to their final out of the inning. Tucker gave up a walk, then watched in disbelief as Princeton senior second baseman Jake Arsenault (.356, 2 HR, 41 RBI) hit the ball over the head of the Northwestern centerfielder for an RBI triple. Tucker gave up a single to the next batter and just like that, the Wildcats found themselves down 2-0 to Princeton. The Tigers would find a way to get three more hits off of Tucker in the 5th to score again and increase their lead to 3-0. Northwestern was having their struggles at the plate as well. Sophomore starter Juan Molina gave up a couple of hits to the Wildcats in his 2 2/3 innings, but Northwestern couldn't figure out junior reliever Justin Kaine, managing only two hits over his five innings of work. Northwestern closed the gap by scoring two runs in the bottom of the 8th, but Princeton holds on for the upset and takes Game 1 from the #1 team i the land.

In Game 2, Northwestern looked like the team they had all year, leading Princeton 5-1 through six innings. But in the bottom of the 7th, an error started the inning off on the wrong foot for Wildcats. After giving up a walk and two doubles to Princeton, Northwestern found themselves clinging to a 5-4 lead. But the momentum had swung, and the home crowd could smell the upset coming. The floodgates opened in the bottom of the 8th, smashing three singles, a double, and a triple. The Tigers scored four times and held on for the upset win, taking the game 8-5 and winning the series in a two-game sweep!!

#12 Michigan Wolverines (39-21) vs. #9 Lehigh Mountain Hawks (39-21)

Game 1 was a pitcher's duel, as many would expect when two pitchers with 50 career wins face each other. Both John Roter and Kevin DeVries pitched superbly in this low scoring affair, with both men going the distance. But DeVries was just a little better, throwing fewer pitches and allowing fewer baserunners than his opponent, as Lehigh won the game by a score of 2-1.

After losing the first game of the series, Michigan took their frustrations out on Victor Aguilar in Game 2. The Wolverines were holding a slim 2-1 lead after four innings, but they erupted for seven runs in the 5th to put the game out of reach. Michigan would tack on three more in a rout, defeating Lehigh 12-1 for force a third and decisive Game 3.

Michigan turned back to John Roter to pitch in Game 3, while Lehigh chose to go with freshman Bill Lacey (13-6, 3.58 ERA). The Wolverines jumped all over the youngster, scoring four runs in the 4th to take a lead they would never relinquish. Michigan goes on to win the game 8-4 and take the series two games to one.

#11 Howard Bison (37-23) vs. #3 Dartmouth Big Green (41-19)

With Game 1 tied 2-2 going into the 7th, the game looked like it was going to go down to the wire. But then Howard junior catcher Kevin Mundy delivered an RBI triple in the top of the inning to break the tie. The Bison would roll with the momentum created by Mundy and score three more times to take a 6-2 lead. The Big Green couldn't recover, as Howard won the game 6-3 for a Game 1 victory.

Howard looked to have Game 2 and the series well in hand after six innings, leading Dartmouth 4-1. But they gave up a run in the 7th and another in the 8th to find themselves clinging to a one-run lead going into the 9th. With two on and one out in the 9th, Dartmouth junior DH Daniel Heard tripled to right-center on an 0-1 pitch to put the Big Green in the lead!! Howard had no response in the bottom half of the inning, as Dartmouth comes back to win the game by a score of 5-4.

Dartmouth won Game 3 in a rout 11-1, as John Anderson put on a hitting clinic in a 4-for-5 performance. Anderson, who hit .401 in the regular season, was named series MVP after posting a .692 batting average over the three-game set.

#13 Vermont Catamounts (37-23) vs. #4 Illinois State Redbirds (41-19)

The Redbirds return to the playoffs to defend last season's national title. Their first hurdle for another championship was getting into the playoffs. Their second hurdle is Vermont. The Catamounts were able to score the first couple of runs in Game 1, but Illinois State came back and held a 3-2 lead after six innings. However, the Redbirds came unraveled in the 7th. A hit-by-pitch, an error, a walk, a single, and a double led to two Vermont runs. The Catamounts added another run in the 8th, as they go on to take Game 1 by a score of 5-3.

The Redbirds looked to be on the brink of losing Game 2 and the series, trailing 6-3 after six innings of play. In the top of the 7th though, Illinois State managed four hits and scored three times to tie the game up at 6. Vermont's defense cost them the game in the 8th, as they committed two errors and giving up the winning run to Illinois State. The Redbirds eke out a win in Game 2 by the score of 7-6 to force a third and final game.

Game 3 was a pitcher's duel for nine innings, as the game went into extra innings after a 2-2 tie through nine. In the top of the 10th, Vermont gets three hits. Combined with two Illinois State errors, the Catamounts score four times to take a 6-2 lead. Vermont has it's own issues in the bottom half of the inning, committing an error and allowing runs to score on a wild pitch and double. But they hold on to take out the defending champs, winning the game 6-4 in 10 innings, and winning the series two games to one.

#14 Drake Bulldogs (37-24) vs. #6 Nebraska Cornhuskers (41-19)

After spotting Nebraska a three-run lead in the 1st, Drake rumbled back, rolling over the Cornhuskers in Lincoln by the score of 13-3. The Bulldogs punished Nebraska senior Justin Welfare (13-5, 3.15 ERA), who gave up ten runs (nine earned) and 15 hits over 6 2/3 innings. Drake freshman Jake Kelley (8-3, 2.72 ERA) gave four hits in the 1st inning, but only five more for the rest of the game. Junior DH Paul Harper went 5-for-6 in the game for the Bulldogs.

In Game 2, Drake sophomore shortstop Brandon Hanna cracked a 2-run homer to left in the 4th to break a 2-2 tie and give the Bulldogs the lead for good. Drake added another run in the 8th and go on to win the game 5-2, taking the series in a sweep, two games to none.

#8 Northern Iowa Panthers (39-21) vs. #5 Vanderbilt Commodores (41-19)

Vanderbilt only managed three hits in Game 1. Two of them came in the 4th inning, where combined with a Panthers' error, allowed the Commodores to get two runs across the plate. It was all Vanderbilt would need, as Northern Iowa stranded nine of ten baserunners in a 2-1 loss.

Northern Iowa lost both regular-season games to Vanderbilt this year, and with their Game 1 loss, were now 0-3 against the Commodores. Leading 3-2 going into the 9th inning of Game 2, it looked as though the Panthers were ready to finally defeat Vandy. Vanderbilt had other ideas, smashing four hits and scoring three times to steal the game away from Northern Iowa. Vandy won the game 5-3 and took the series in a sweep.

#10 USC Trojans (39-21) vs. #7 Alabama Crimson Tide (40-20)

Alabama dominated from the start in Game 1. Junior pitcher Tyler Harder (14-5, 2.98 ERA) held the Trojans to just six hits, as the Crimson Tide won the game easily 5-1.

Game 2 was tied 3-3 after five innings before Alabama scored a run in each of the 6th, 7th, and 8th innings on their way to a 6-4 win and series sweep. Senior right fielder John Fryar, who hit .242 in the regular season, went 3-for-3 with three RBI in Game 2. Fryar was named the Series MVP as he hit .800 over the two games. USC didn't help their cause, committing four errors in the game.

#18 VMI Keydets (37-24) vs. #2 LSU Tigers (44-16)

LSU committed five of the eight total errors in Game 1 but still managed to win easily over VMI 9-3. Senior third baseman Sjaak Oliver went 4-for-5 in the game for the Tigers.

Game 2 was even sloppier than Game 1, with LSU committing seven errors to VMI's four miscues. Still, the game was tied 4-4 entering the 9th inning. An RBI single by freshman second baseman Jack Free wins the game for the Keydets in walk-off fashion, as VMI tied up the series 1-1 with the 5-4 win.

LSU played a clean game in Game 3, committing no errors as they cruised to a 7-3 win over VMI, winning the series two games to one. Keydets' freshman pitcher Tyler Sullivan allowed nine hits and walked eight in the game. LSU senior catcher Bobby Hoffman walked all four times he stepped up to the plate, tying the CBA playoff record for base on balls in a game.

#19 Princeton Tigers (37-25) vs. #12 Michigan Wolverines (41-22)

Game 1 was tied up at two runs apiece until the 7th when Michigan broke the game open by scoring five runs on five hits and a Princeton error. The Tigers would get a run in the 9th, but Michigan prevails 7-3. Junior right fielder Joe Connor was named player of the game. Connor was 2 for 2 with a double and the 2-RBI single which broke the tie in the 7th.

The Tigers returned home for Game 2 and made an impact in the 1st. Princeton scored four times on four hits and a Wolverine error to take an early 4-0 lead. The Tigers would score three times in the next four innings, riding the early offense to a 7-3 win over Michigan to even the series.

Princeton held a slim 1-0 lead after two innings before breaking the game open in the 3rd. The Tigers slammed two doubles and four singles. Coupled with a Michigan error, Princeton scored five runs and never looked back as they cruised to an easy 11-1 victory to take the series. Princeton junior third baseman Jerry Patrick was 4 for 5 in the contest, winning Player of the Game and Series MVP honors.

#13 Vermont Catamounts (39-24) vs. #3 Dartmouth Big Green (43-20)

In a New England Region rematch, Vermont challenges regional champion Dartmouth. The Big Green owned a 9-3 record over the Catamounts in the regular season.

Game 1 was scoreless until the 4th inning when Dartmouth senior John Anderson cracked a two-run homer over the left-field wall. The Big Green would score in the next three innings as well to win by a score of 6-2. Dartmouth junior pitcher Daniel Estrada was named Player of the Game. The Florida native improved his record to 17-5 on the year, scattering seven hits in the complete-game victory.

Dartmouth held an early lead in Game 2, leading 3-1 through four innings of play. But the Catamounts scored in the 5th and 6th innings to tie things up. In the bottom of the 7th, Vermont senior right fielder Cesar Perez hit the game-winning RBI single to give his team the lead. Dartmouth was able to get men to second base in both the 8th and 9th innings, but couldn't bring them home. Vermont holds on to win the game 4-3 and sends the series back to Hanover for Game 3.

Game 3 was everything a Dartmouth fan could hope for. Daniel Estrada pitched another solid game, holding Vermont to four hits over nine innings, as the Big Green win the game in a shutout, 5-0, taking the series two games to one. Estrada was named Series MVP, winning two games with a 0.50 ERA over 18 innings of work.

#14 Drake Bulldogs (39-24) vs. #5 Vanderbilt Commodores (43-19)

Vanderbilt squeaked out a 3-2 victory over visiting Drake in Game 1. Junior pitcher Don McJames got the win to push his record to 18-4 on the season. Vandy junior first baseman Wyatt Jackson was 3 for 4 in the game.

Game 2 was another close one, but it was Drake which came out on top, winning the contest 3-1. Bulldog freshman Jake "Stork" Kelley showed maturity on the mound in outdueling Commodore senior Win Mercer. Drake got all of their offense in the 4th inning, scoring all three of their runs on four hits. But it was all they needed as the series heads back to Nashville.

It was another close contest in Game 3....well, at least for seven innings. With Drake holding onto a one-run lead 5-4, the Bulldogs smashed five hits in the 8th inning. Of the five singles, three were infield hits. Drake scored five times as well and go on to win the game 10-4 and take the series two games to one. Drake catcher and California native Rich de la Fuente was named Series MVP, as the senior hit .455 in the three-game set.

#7 Alabama Crimson Tide (42-20) vs. #2 LSU Tigers (46-17)

Alabama trailed 2-1 going into the 8th inning in Game 1. But the Crimson Tide belted out four hits and scored four times to take the game 5-2. Junior pitcher Tyler Harder handcuffed the Tigers, holding them to just four hits over nine innings to move to 16-5 on the year.

LSU junior pitcher Steve Skoczylas dominated 'Bama, holding the Crimson Tide to just four hits in Game 2. But he got no run support until the 7th inning when the Tigers finally got on the board. LSU then scored six more times over the final two innings to win the game easily 7-0.

LSU held a 4-3 lead after seven innings. Unfortunately for the Tigers, they couldn't hold onto it as a 2-RBI triple by Alabama senior center fielder Jason Matthews in the 8th turned the Tide for 'Bama. Alabama was able to hold on and win the game 5-4 and take the series over LSU two games to one.

#19 Princeton Tigers (39-26) vs. #3 Dartmouth Big Green (45-21)

Dartmouth opened up the 1st inning of Game 1 with an offensive barrage, as Nap Lajoie tripled, John Anderson doubled, and Tim Henline tripled to give the Big Green an early 4-0 lead. Dartmouth wouldn't look back and went on to win easily by a score of 8-1. Anderson was 3-for-4 in the game with the previously mentioned double and a home run, winning Player of the Game honors. Lajoie finished 2-for-4 with two triples.

The 3-4-5 punch of the Dartmouth lineup featuring Lajoie, Anderson, and Henline finished Game 2 with a combined 9-for-15 at the plate as the Big Green rolled to a series sweep with a 9-3 win over Princeton. Lajoie finished the game 4-for-5 and was named the Series MVP.

#14 Drake Bulldogs (41-25) vs. #7 Alabama Crimson Tide (44-21)

Alabama junior starter Tyler Harder improved his record to 17-5 on the season with a four-hit masterpiece against Drake in Game 1. The Crimson Tide broke free of a 1-1 tie in the 6th by scoring four runs and going on to a 5-1 win.

Drake fell behind early, as they spotted Alabama a two-run advantage in the 1st. But the Bulldogs ripped off a huge 2nd inning which saw them score six times on five hits. The highlight of the inning was the 3-run homer to left by Drake senior left fielder Stephen Dinardo. The San Diego native has developed well as a collegiate ballplayer. He was originally the #7 prospect for Drake when he signed in Fall 1893, but hit over .300 in three of his four seasons with the team. The Bulldogs added three more runs in the 7th en route to a 9-2 win over the Crimson Tide to knot the series at a game apiece.

It was a pitcher's duel in Game 3, as Drake freshman Jake "Stork" Kelley battled Alabama senior Javion McDowell. The Crimson Tide held a slim 1-0 lead after eight innings. But in the 9th, Bulldog junior right fielder Trevon Stroman tied the game up with an RBI single to left. Two batters later, senior catcher Rich de la Fuente brought Stroman home with a triple to right. Trailing 2-1, Alabama goes down in order in the bottom of the 9th as Drake comes back to win the game and take the series!!!

#14 Drake Bulldogs (43-26) vs. #3 Dartmouth Big Green (47-21)

Drake's David Thompson (18-6) and Dartmouth's Daniel Estrada (19-5) slugged their way through nine innings with the game deadlocked in a 3-3 tie. In the top of the 10th, Bulldog junior center fielder David Maynard stroked a liner to left for a double. The next batter, senior first baseman Danny Elliot, smashed a grounder into right. Maynard rounded third and was able to beat the throw to the plate and giving Drake the lead, 4-3!!! Thompson came back to pitch the bottom of the 10th and set the Big Green down in order to give his team the win!

Drake takes the early lead in Game 2 with a run in the 1st and never looks back. The Bulldogs added a run in the 5th and two more in the 6th as they hold on to defeat Dartmouth 4-2. Drake wins their 1st National Championship in a sweep!! Not too bad for a team who finished third in their region and only reached the playoffs after playing a 61st game. Drake junior right fielder Trevon Stroman was named Series MVP with a 5-for-8 hitting performance over the two games.

1898 Preseason Predictions

Winter had finally ended and the Spring thaw was in full swing. That could only mean one thing...it was baseball season again! Ephraim, like usual, had a busy offseason with putting together a revamped Collegiate Baseball Times and approving the schedules of all 72 teams in the CBA. Not to mention trying to keep up with his wife and their nine children. Ephraim was most excited about his oldest, James, who was now 17 and finishing up high school. Like the rest of the boys in the family, James was a baseball player and looked to continue playing at the collegiate level.

The sportswriters issued their annual predictions for the CBA. Ephraim always got a good laugh from them because they weren't really very accurate. In 1897, the so-called "experts" only picked 5 of the 16 playoff teams correctly. Regardless, according to the sportswriters, they expected both Brown and Yale to compete for the New England Region. In the Northeast Region, Princeton is a narrow favorite over Army, Cornell, and Fordham. Howard is expected to win the Atlantic Region, although Villanova and Lehigh could get into the postseason with a wild card berth. Clemson and Georgia are the favorites to challenge for the Southeast Region crown. In the Great Lakes Region, Illinois State and Minnesota are projected to battle for the regional championship, followed by a resurgent Central Michigan team. Nebraska looks to take the Midwest Region, while in the Pacific, California is a narrow favorite over USC and Washington State. LSU looks to repeat as Southwest Region champions. Finally, Western Conference newcomer Northwestern is the favorite to win the conference title.

As we all know, predictions are all fine and good, but they really don't mean a thing unless the teams can take the field and back up the hype.

March 1898 Recap

The first month of the 1898 season was good for pitchers. Hurlers were on fire, throwing 81 shutouts across the league in March. The biggest pitching news of the month was on March 9th, when Alabama senior Tyler Harder threw a perfect game on the road against Rhode Island. Still, the Crimson Tide barely won the game 2-0, scoring on a walk and hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the 9th. Harder, who was 34-22 in his first three years, would go on to win Pitcher of the Month honors for March after finishing at 8-0 with a 2.00 ERA. On the hitter's side of things, headlines were slim, with only a dozen notable performances outside of hitting streak watches. However, there was one record-breaking performance put together by Princeton's Charlie Dexter. The junior right fielder, who finished the 1897 season with a 26 game hitting streak, was able to tack on another 13 game hitting streak to start the 1898 campaign. In doing so, Dexter set a new hitting streak mark of 39 games, breaking the old record of 34 set way back in 1874 by Syracuse third baseman John Baker.

As is usually the case in the first month of play, the Top 25 saw a shuffling of teams. Lehigh has jumped out to the CBA's best start at 18-4, which is particularly impressive since the Mountain Hawks have only played two games at home. Preseason #2 Drake and #3 Howard have both opened up poorly and have dropped out of the rankings. In the Atlantic Region, Brown has a slim 1/2 game lead on Harvard, with Holy Cross and Yale close behind. Army leads the Northeast Region by four games over preseason favorite Princeton. Lehigh is in first place in the Atlantic Region, four games ahead of Villanova. The Southeast Region is starting to look like a powerhouse. Alabama is in 1st place by one game over Mississippi State, with Tennessee, Clemson, and Wake Forest only two games back. Georgia and North Carolina are still in the mix as well. Minnesota and Illinois State are tied for the lead in the Great Lakes Region, with Central Michigan only three games back. In the Midwest Region, Northern Iowa has surged out to a three-game lead over Iowa State. The Panthers' success has no doubt been due to the performance of JUCO transfer Elmer Flick. The junior right fielder won Batter of the Month, hitting .427 with 2 home runs, 18 RBI, and 22 runs scored. Kansas State and preseason favorite Nebraska are close behind at four games out. California leads the Pacific Region by two games. In the Southwest Region, LSU and Texas are tied for the lead. And in the Western Conference, Michigan has surprised a few people and lead the conference by four games over preseason favorite Northwestern. The Wolverines currently have an 11 game winning streak. Part of that success came from JUCO transfer Joe Yeager. "Little Joe", a junior pitcher, won Rookie of the Month honors after putting together a 6-2 mark and 1.16 ERA.

Ephraim had to hand out a couple of suspensions in the first month. The first came on March 11th after a game between South Carolina and Mississippi. Gamecocks senior pitcher David Reed hit the Rebels' Noah Childers after the previous batter had hit a home run off of him. The senior right fielder charged the mound and the benches cleared. Ephraim had seen this pattern of behavior before, with pitchers plunking hitters after giving up a home run. And he still wasn't sure how to handle it. Suspensions weren't working in deterring the immature pitcher behavior. In this case, both players were suspended for four games. On March 27th, Cincinnati's Al Gore was kicked out of the game against Central Michigan for arguing balls and strikes with the home plate umpire. The junior right fielder threw his hat and kicked dirt on the umpire in his tirade. The temper tantrum earned him a three-game suspension from Ephraim, who was shocked by the ridiculous behavior.

April 1898 Recap

Pitching became even more dominant in the month of April, with 98 shutouts thrown, up from 81 in March. By comparison, there were only 11 notable hitting performances, one fewer than the previous month. There is an obvious decline in hitting, with only two hitters in the CBA batting over .400 compared to five in 1897 and six in 1896.

Some sad news out of Columbia, South Carolina this month, as South Carolina President Willie Ortega died unexpectedly on April 7th while on vacation. Willie Ortega, Jr., 31, was eventually named as the successor to his father as the university president. Ironically enough, Ortega's death occurred on his son's 31st birthday. Ephraim had to dish out a couple of more suspensions thanks to yet another bench-clearing brawl. Freshman pitcher Jared Brown of Rhode Island and sophomore third baseman William Coen were both suspended four games for their roles in the April 12th incident.

LSU freshman pitcher Matt Christensen racked up a 6-2 record and 1.46 ERA to earn the Rookie of the Month award. Indiana State's Dennis Wise took home the Pitcher of the Month award. The sophomore was 8-0 this month with a 1.91 ERA. Senior center fielder Pat Blackwood was named Batter of the Month after hitting an astounding .524 at the plate!! Blackwood hit three home runs, had 20 RBI, and scored 21 times in April.

Regional recaps:

New England Region: #5 Harvard has run away with first place and leads #25 Brown by six games. Brown, however, is 3-2 against the Crimson this season. The two teams meet for the final three games of the regular season at Bears Ballpark in Providence. Yale and Holy Cross are seven games back of the lead.

Northeast Region: #14 Army holds down first place by two games over #11 Princeton. Princeton took 2 of 3 from the Black Knights this month and the two teams do not face each other again in the regular season. Cornell is five games back.

Atlantic Region: It's a tight race in the Atlantic. #12 Howard and #8 Lehigh are tied for the lead, but #13 Villanova and #19 Navy are only one game behind. #21 VMI still has a chance at four games back, especially with senior Johnny Guggenbiller, who is 13-0 and leads the CBA with his 1.11 ERA. The Bison have already secured series wins against Lehigh and Navy. They will face 'Nova for the first time this season for a three-game set in May. Howard has a challenging month ahead, however, with series against Princeton, 'Nova, Brown, and VMI. Lehigh faces Navy at home for three games in May and finishes the season with a three-game series at home against Villanova. The Mountain Hawks have a CBA best .310 team batting average.

Southeast Region: In a competitive region, #7 Clemson holds a slim two-game advantage over both #15 Alabama and #16 Mississippi State. The Tiger's last two games of April were both losses against Mississippi State. With one more game against them on the schedule, Clemson will then travel to #1 Illinois State and #23 Tennessee for the next five games. 'Bama has a light schedule remaining, but does play #20 Georgia for two games in Tuscaloosa. Georgia is four games back of the lead. Mississippi State's schedule is no walk in the park, with series against Georgia, Nebraska, #6 LSU, and Tennessee. #24 Wake Forest and Tennessee are five games back of the lead.

Great Lakes Region: Perhaps the biggest surprise in the CBA right now is Illinois State, who went 20-2 this month to earn the #1 ranking. The Redbirds hold a four-game lead over #3 Minnesota and should coast into the playoffs given their remaining schedule. However, they do play #22 Michigan State for three games. The Golden Gophers face both #18 Central Michigan and Michigan State for three games each in May. Central Michigan and Michigan State are nine and ten games back, respectively, and are looking to secure a wild-card spot at this point in the season.

Midwest Region: #4 Northern Iowa leads the region by four games over Nebraska. The Panthers have two games against #10 Northwestern this month, but should otherwise cruise through their remaining games. Junior right fielder Elmer Flick leads the team with his .379 batting average. Kansas State is six games out of first and plays both Northern Iowa and Nebraska this month.

Pacific Region: #9 California has the lead in the region by a single game over #17 Washington State. The Golden Bears have a challenging schedule ahead, facing #2 Michigan at home before facing Washington State for three games. Cal then travels to #10 Northwestern for two games. The Cougars have an easier schedule and may be able to steal the regional title away this month. Senior right fielder Tom McCreery is 2nd in the CBA in hitting at .416. McCreery is almost certain to be a CBA Hall of Famer with his career average currently at .388.

Southwest Region: #6 LSU put together a seven-game winning streak to end the month and leads Tulane by 6 1/2 games. The two teams face each other for the final three games of the season in Baton Rouge.

Western Conference: #2 Michigan continues to be a force behind their starting pitching staff. The Wolverines should cruise to the conference title with their remaining schedule, with the only challenge being on the road against #9 Cal. Michigan leads the CBA in starter and bullpen ERA, runs against, and defensive efficiency. #10 Northwestern, however, has won its last eight games and is three games back of the conference lead. The Wildcats' remaining games are more challenging, with two games at #4 Northern Iowa and two games at home against California.

May 1898 Recap

The final month of the regular season was a fairly quiet one in the Commissioner's Office. The playoff races unfolded, as pitching continued to dominate the Collegiate Baseball Association. By the end of the final day, two regional champions had yet to be determined, forcing a 61st game to be played by four teams and pushing back the playoffs. Three programs dismissed athletic directors and managers this month, as Virginia Tech, Penn, and Ohio all made changes to both positions.

Regional Recaps

New England Region: The Harvard Crimson wrapped up the New England Region title on May 18th following a 5-4 win over Holy Cross. Harvard hasn't been playing well in May, posting a meager 9-7 record. As a result, their ranking has dropped from #5 to #10. The Crimson will be on the road to face #8 Clemson to open up the CBA Playoffs.

Northeast Region: Princeton surged to a 13-3 mark in May to fly past Army and take the regional crown. The Tigers powered up the rankings to #4 and will face #6 Northern Iowa to start the playoffs. The Black Knights, on the other hand, struggled to an 8-8 record on the month. Fortunately for Army, they played well enough to secure a Wild Card spot. They moved up a position in the rankings to #13 and will travel to #3 Northwestern to begin the postseason.

Atlantic Region: Howard took home the Atlantic Region crown, but only after playing an extra game against Lehigh, as both teams finished the season tied at 41-19. The Bison won the game 3-0. Howard put together a 13-4 record in May and jumped up to #5 in the rankings. The Bison will open the playoffs at home against #14 LSU. Lehigh was 12-5 in May and secured a Wild Card slot in the postseason. The Mountain Hawks dropped a spot to #9 and will host #11 Mississippi State in the 1st Round.

Southeast Region: Clemson managed a 10-6 record in May, which was good enough to hold onto 1st place and win the region. The Tigers dropped a slot in the rankings to #8 and will host #10 Harvard to start the postseason. Both Mississippi State and Georgia moved up in the rankings, but neither played well enough to catch up to Clemson. The Bulldogs of Mississippi State are ranked #11 and will travel to #9 Lehigh to start the playoffs. The Bulldogs of Georgia are now ranked #15 and will travel to #2 Michigan to start their postseason.

Great Lakes Region:Illinois State powered to a 13-3 mark in May to retain their #1 ranking. The Redbirds will host #16 California to start their playoff run. Minnesota was a meager 9-7 this month and dropped down to #7 in the rankings. The Golden Gophers are still headed to the postseason, however, and will host #17 Nebraska to start their championship pursuit.

Midwest Region: Northern Iowa held on to win the Midwest Region crown over Nebraska. The Panthers were 10-6 on the month, which dropped them two spots in the rankings to #6. However, the team finished the regular season strong. Northern Iowa starts the playoffs on the road against #4 Princeton. The Cornhuskers were able to secure a playoff spot as a Wild Card. Nebraska was 12-4 in May and vaulted into the Top 25 at #17. The Cornhuskers travel to #7 Minnesota to open up the postseason.

Pacific Region: The California Bears and the Washington State Cougars finished the regular season tied for the regional lead. A 61st "do-or-die" game was played, as only the winner would see the playoffs. The game was hard-fought and went into extra frames. Freshman Rickey Pierce, who hit .176 on the season, drove in the winning run for the Bears in the 12th inning to propel his team into the postseason! Cal had a challenging schedule in May, and it showed, as they were only 7-10 in the month. Cal dropped to #16 in the rankings and will next face #1 Illinois State on the road.

Southwest Region: The LSU Tigers won their region for the third straight season but struggled to a 7-9 record in May to end their regular season. As a result, they dropped to #14 in the rankings and will have to travel to #5 Howard for their chance at a championship. The two teams split a two-game series at LSU to begin the season.

Western Conference: #2 Michigan held on to the conference title by a thread, beating out Northwestern by a game. The Wolverines were 12-4 in May, with three of those losses coming in a five-game stretch against Wisconsin. But the team won their last five games to finish the regular season. Michigan will host #15 Georgia to open the playoffs. Northwestern was an amazing 14-2 in May against a weak schedule. The Wildcats moved up to #3 in the rankings and will open up the postseason at home against #13 Army.

#16 California Golden Bears (36-25) vs. #1 Illinois State Redbirds (48-12)

In a battle of sophomore pitchers in Game 1, it was California's Cesar Martinez (10-5, 2.60) who came out on top. Martinez held the nation's top team to four hits and a single run, as the Golden Bears scored early on their way to a 6-1 victory. Sophomore shortstop Jim Leidy went 4-for-5 in the game with two triples. Illinois State's Dennis Wise (17-2, 2.58) just didn't look like the same pitcher who won 17 games in the regular season, as he lasted only 6 2/3 innings while allowing six earned runs.

Both teams turned to experience for Game 2 by starting senior pitchers. Illinois State's Mike LaRochelle (13-4, 2.49) pitched a complete-game five-hitter to help the Redbirds to a 7-2 win and even the series at a game apiece. Senior right fielder Eric Westmoreland went 4-for-5 in the contest and five other Illinois State players recorded multiple hits in the game. California's Rob Carson (11-8, 2.59) was shellacked for 16 hits over 6 1/3 innings.

Game 3 featured a rematch of Game 1 starters, but the results were much different. Illinois State knew what to expect from Cal's Cesar Martinez, hitting him early and often en route to a 7-2 victory and 2-1 series win. Six Redbird players recorded multiple hits and Dennis Wise looked like a 17 win pitcher while pitching a complete-game six-hitter.

#6 Northern Iowa Panthers (40-20) vs. #4 Princeton Tigers (40-20)

Junior's Jason Jepson (13-7, 2.97) and Juan Molina (12-6, 1.96) battled it out in a close Game 1 performance with dual complete-game outings. Senior catcher Justin McCarty (.313, 0 HR, 31 RBI) put the visiting Panthers on the board in the 1st with an RBI single. Northern Iowa held the 1-0 lead until the 4th inning when Princeton took the lead on back-to-back RBI hits for a 2-1 advantage. McCarty delivered another RBI single in the top of the 8th to tie it up for Northern Iowa. But in the bottom half of the inning, the Tigers scored on senior first baseman John Taylor's single to right. Prince would hold on to win by a score of 3-2.

Junior designated hitter Elmer Flick (.350, 4 HR, 43 RBI) led the charge for Northern Iowa as the Panthers destroyed Princeton 10-3 in Game 2 to tie the series up 1-1. Flick was 2-for-3 in the game with a triple, two walks, and four runs scored. Princeton senior starter Walt Woods (13-7, 2.47) lasted only five innings in the contest while sophomore Donny Hilty (8-4, 2.39) earned the win for the Panthers.

Game 3 was another closely played match. Princeton trailed 2-1 going into the bottom of the 9th. With two outs and a runner at third, senior third baseman Jerry Patrick lined a single into right to tie the game up. The game would go into extra frames. In the top of the 10th with two outs, Northern Iowa reeled off three straight hits and scored two runs to take back the lead 4-2. The Panthers would hold on and go on to win the game and take the series two games to one.

#11 Mississippi State Bulldogs (38-22) vs. #9 Lehigh Mountain Hawks (41-20)

Mississippi State held a hitting and scoring clinic in the first two innings, scoring seven times and never looking back in an 11-3 Game 1 victory. Senior first baseman Rafael Sanchez (.266, 0 HR, 14 RBI) led the Bulldogs with a 4-for-5 performance at the plate while junior Jake Roth (12-8, 2.41) scattered eight hits over nine innings on the mound.

The Mississippi State Bulldogs scored in six of eight innings but had to hold off a 9th inning rally by Lehigh in order to secure a 6-5 win over the Mountain Hawks. The Bulldogs take the series two games to none. Senior center fielder John Scheff led the way in the batter's box with a 4-for-5 day for Mississippi State. Lehigh sophomore second baseman David Champion was 3-for-3 with two triples in the losing effort. The Mountain Hawks didn't help their cause with six errors in the game.

#14 LSU Tigers (37-23) vs. #5 Howard Bison (42-19)

LSU and Howard had to go to extra innings to decide Game 1. LSU held a 2-0 lead going into the bottom half of the 8th inning. Senior shortstop Jonathan Holmes was able to tie the game up for Howard with a 2-run homer down the left-field line. The home run was only the second for Holmes this year. The two teams went into the 11th inning tied 2-2 before LSU scored two more times for a 4-2 advantage. Howard responded in the bottom half of the frame with a run of their own but stranded the tying run at third to let LSU take the game 4-3. The two teams combined for eight errors. LSU senior Steve Skoczylas (11-9, 2.20) earned the win while pitching 10 of 11 innings. Howard sophomore Brian Grace (11-6, 2.58) pitched all 11 innings in the loss. Bison DH Casey Fisher was 3-for-5 in the losing effort.

LSU freshman Jim Byrne (9-3, 3.72) pitched a complete-game five-hitter and overcame five walks to lead LSU to a 4-1 Game 2 win and a sweep of the series. Senior second baseman Art Darnell, who was 2-for-2 in the game with two walks, was named the Series MVP for LSU. Darnell hit .375 in the two games and had a .500 on-base percentage.

#13 Army Black Knights (37-23) vs. #3 Northwestern Wildcats (43-17)

Junior Buttons Briggs (13-7, 1.87) of Army and senior John Lipson (14-4, 2.32) of Northwestern pitched complete games in a classic pitcher's duel. An RBI single in the 2nd inning was the only run scored and the only run Lipson would need to help the Wildcats win Game 1 by a 1-0 score. Lipson allowed the Black Knights only four hits and commented to reporters after the game that "there was no wiggle room in this one."

With Game 2 tied 4-4 in the bottom of the 8th, sophomore center fielder Chris Hallman delivered the most important, and his only, hit of the night, stroking a liner down the right-field line for an RBI double. The hit broke the deadlock for Army and gave them the lead, 5-4. The Black Knights would add another run before the inning ended and hold on to win by a score of 6-4, knotting the series up 1-1.

Briggs and Lipson topped their Game 1 performance in their Game 3 rematch with both pitchers going the distance in this one. The game was tied 1-1 after nine innings and went into extra frames. The contest went into the 15th inning before the game was decided. Freshman catcher Andy Beck, who hit a measly .171 in 14 games this season hit what was likely the most important single in his young collegiate career. The leadoff base hit, a liner into right-center, got Beck on base for the Wildcats. Beck stood at second with two outs when junior shortstop Drew Will knocked a hard grounder into left-center. Beck, not known for his speed, somehow managed to lumber around third and beat the throw to the plate!! Northwestern wins the game 2-1 and takes the series in three games!!

#17 Nebraska Cornhuskers (38-22) vs. #7 Minnesota Golden Gophers (40-20)

Game 1 featured a great pitcher's duel between Nebraska senior Mike Corne (10-5, 3.01) and Minnesota senior Tim Bloom (15-5, 1.63). Both pitchers allowed only four hits each and both went the distance. The difference, however, was that Nebraska managed to plate two runs over the course of those nine innings to take the game by a score of 2-0. Cornhusker senior first baseman Danny Marshall (.328, 0 HR, 28 RBI) recorded half of his team's hits in a 2-for-4 performance at the plate with an RBI.

Sophomore David Mallow (11-6, 3.39) pitched a gem for the Cornhuskers in Game 2, holding Minnesota to five hits in a 3-1 Nebraska win! Seven of nine Cornhuskers recorded a hit against the Golden Gophers in what could truly be called a team effort. Nebraska sweeps the series in two games and advances to the next round.

#10 Harvard Crimson (40-20) vs. #8 Clemson Tigers (40-20)

Senior Adam Korn (14-5, 1.81) of Harvard and junior Zachary McPherson (14-6, 2.41) of Clemson put on a pitching clinic. Both players pitched complete games and allowed a total of nine hits. Korn only allowed three of those hits, but a passed ball in the 2nd inning with a runner on third was the difference, as the Tigers eked out a 1-0 win over the Crimson in Game 1. Harvard senior first baseman Zi-Yang Cui went 3-for-4 to lead all hitters.

Harvard senior Josh Mairs (15-5, 2.01) delivered an exceptional performance in Game 2 to help the Crimson clip the Tigers 4-3 and even the series up. The lefty allowed only six hits in the complete-game victory. Harvard junior DH Brian Donovan was 2-for-4 in the contest with a triple and two RBI.

Three separate Clemson players had multiple hits in Game 3 to lead the Tigers to a 7-4 win over Harvard and take the series 2-1. Zachary McPherson earned another complete-game win and was named the Series MVP. The right-handed junior pitched 18 innings over two games and had a 1.50 ERA.

#15 Georgia Bulldogs (37-23) vs. #2 Michigan Wolverines (44-16)

The Georgia Bulldogs shocked the CBA world with their Game 1 performance, somehow overcoming six errors and scoring five times to defeat Michigan 5-0 at Wolverines Ballpark. The crowd of 1486 fans was silent most of the game as they watched their team blow chance after chance at scoring runs while leaving eight runners on base.

Game 2 was scoreless through four innings. It was in the bottom of the 5th inning that Michigan completely imploded. Georgia managed four hits in the inning and took advantage of a walk, a hit batter, and an error to push six runs across the plate. Senior JUCO transfer Wiley Piatt showed why he was the Bulldogs top recruit the previous year, holding the #2 team in the nation to only five hits in the complete-game shutout. Georgia wouldn't score again, but then again, they didn't need to as they stun Michigan with a 6-0 victory and a sweep of the series!!!

With the end of the month of May came the monthly honors to be given out. Illinois State freshman Josh Brown (13-4, 3.73) was named Rookie of the Month after posting a 5-0 record with a 0.83 earned run average. Howard junior Nick Stegmaier (15-5, 1.67) earned Pitcher of the Month honors with a 6-0 mark and 0.51 ERA. Clemson sophomore right fielder Kid Nance (.380, 8 HR, 47 RBI) was named Batter of the Month after hitting .346 in May with four home runs, 16 RBI, and 17 runs scored.

#6 Northern Iowa Panthers (42-21) vs. #1 Illinois State Redbirds (50-13)

Senior right fielder Eric Westmoreland hit an RBI triple in the bottom of the 5th inning to break a 3-3 tie in Game 1 and give Illinois State the lead. The Redbirds would hold on to win the game 4-3. Senior Mike LaRochelle earned the win while holding Northern Iowa to six hits in the game.

Illinois State took an early 2-0 lead in the 1st inning, but Northern Iowa broke loose to score three times each in the 2nd and 3rd innings to secure a lead they would never relinquish. Junior Jason Jepsen held the Redbirds to only two hits in a masterful pitching performance which saw him throw only 83 pitches in the complete-game outing. The Redbirds didn't help their cause by committing five errors in the contest. The Panthers tied the series up with the 9-2 victory.

The bats were hot on both sides for Game 3 in a 3 1/2 hour marathon. Northern Iowa jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings. By the end of the 5th, the Panthers still led 7-5. At the end of the 6th, their lead was down to one, 7-6. But that all changed in the 8th and 9th innings, when Northern Iowa tacked on four more runs to upset and eliminate the #1 Illinois State Redbirds by a score of 11-6, taking the series two games to one. Third baseman Ron Ballis earned the Series MVP as the freshman hit .417 with four RBI and three runs scored.

#14 LSU Tigers (39-23) vs. #11 Mississippi State Bulldogs (40-22)

Left fielder Roberto Banuelos led the charge for LSU with a 4-for-5 performance at the plate, as the senior hit a double and three singles in the Tiger's 6-2 win in Game 1. Mississippi State stranded a dozen runners in the loss.

After trailing 2-1 early in Game 2, Mississippi State scored six times in the 3rd and never looked back as they routed LSU by a score of 10-2. Senior center fielder John Scheff was 3-for-3 in the game with a homer and two singles. Third baseman Vince Laffey, a freshman, was 3-for-4 at the plate, while sophomore right fielder Josh Parham knocked in three RBI in a 2-for-5 outing.

LSU scored two runs in the 1st inning and held on for the rest of the game to sneak past Mississippi State by the score of 3-2. The Bulldogs struggled defensively, committing four errors in the game. Had the Tigers not stranded 11 men on base, the outcome may not have looked so close. LSU takes the series 2-1 and will face Northern Iowa in the next round.

#17 Nebraska Cornhuskers (40-22) vs. #3 Northwestern Wildcats (45-18)

Game 1 featured a great pitching matchup between Nebraska senior Mike Corne and Northwestern senior Adam Todd. The Cornhuskers led 2-1 going into the bottom of the 9th inning. Wildcat's center fielder Harry Steinfeldt led the inning off with a single. The freshman moved to second on a sac bunt to bring up DH Peter Liggett. The senior delivers a looper into right field as Steinfeldt takes off and rounds third. Right fielder John Chapman, who has possibly the strongest arm in the league, fields the ball and guns it to home. Steinfeldt is able to get in under the tag and ties the game 2-2!!! Liggett advances to second on a ground out. The Cornhuskers decide to intentionally walk sophomore left fielder Ronnie Krouwel (.310) in favor of junior first baseman Dave Nelson (.214). The move doesn't pay off for Nebraska, as Nelson delivers a line drive into right field. Chapman fields the ball cleanly as Liggett heads for home. The play at the plate and Liggett is......SAFE!!! The crowd goes wild as the Wildcats have come back from behind to win the game 3-2!!

Game 2 featured another great pitching duel between Northwestern senior John Lipson against Nebraska sophomore David Malloy. Tied 1-1 after nine innings, the game would go into extras. In the bottom of the 10th, junior shortstop Chris Bryant singles with one out to get on board for the Cornhuskers. Sophomore third baseman Ricky Fraire follows up with a base knock into right. Northwestern's Ronnie Krouwel fields the ball and throws to third as Bryant speeds past second. But the throw is way off the mark and gets past third base. Bryant wheels around third and scores easily as the Cornhusker crowd goes into a frenzy with a 2-1 walk-off win!!!

Nebraska dug themselves into a hole early, committing two errors in the 1st inning and giving up three runs. Northwestern never looked back and cruised to a 7-2 win, taking the series two games to one to advance to the CBA Final Four. Wildcat's first baseman Dave Nelson was named the Series MVP after going 2-for-3 in the game and hitting .500 in the series.

#15 Georgia Bulldogs (39-23) vs. #8 Clemson Tigers (42-21)

Junior DH Tom Cain hit an RBI triple in the 7th inning to break a 2-2 tie and give Clemson the lead. The Tigers would score twice more in the inning and go on to win Game 1 by the score of 5-2.

Georgia committed five errors in Game 2 but still managed to keep the game close. The Bulldogs even had a man on second in the 9th with one out. But they couldn't bring him home, as Clemson wins Game 2 by the score of 4-3 to sweep the series. Sophomore right fielder Kid Nance was 3-for-4 in the game for the Tigers, while senior third baseman also went 3-for-4 in the loss for Georgia.
