How do you know your opponent's tactics?

The manual says a given tactic I can select works well against certain tactics but works poorly against others. So how do I know what tactic the opponent is using?

The assistant's feedback in the game could be a good place to get this info but it only lets you know offensive and physical orientation.

Maybe this is a fog of war thing so i can't pick the exact counter to the opponents tactic but with no 2D simulator, I really could use some help in figuring out what I am "seeing" from the opponent.

To my knowledge there is no way to know what tactics your opponents are using, unless assigning a scout could help this is some way. I just try to find tactics that best suit my team and hope that's enough to beat my opponents. It would be nice if they brought back the indicators of whether a tactic was a major or minor counter to your opponent though.

I have the exact same question. Do I try and tailor my tactics to my opponent or just roll with one tactic that I believe best suits my team?

Honestly, I'd worry about what suits your team best, because what the best tactic to counter your opponent is might not be the best tactic for your team, which will hurt you just as much if not more.

You can view any AI team's lines, assigned roles, and tactics before you start the match the same way that you check their roster.

That definitely helps but I didn't see their tactic specifically. I was really looking more for seeing their tactics since the manual says if I choose a tactic for my team, it works well against certain tactics but not so well against others. For example, Flexible Reaction is Strong vs. Torpedo, weak vs. 2-3 Press.

I assume it happens "under the hood" but it would be nice to know specifically. Let's say I use the same tactic for 5 games and win 4 and lose 1. Are the four wins because I had a better tactic, better players, or just the randomness of the game? Is the one loss because my tactic was weak against theirs but I just didn't know?

renojedi, it does kinda show it. Check the AI opponent's Global and/or Unit tactics before you start the match. Here is my next opponent, the Jets.

For example, you can see their Global settings and which tactics they have assigned for line 1. A shame we can't select any other lines and their PP/PK. Maybe it's a bug?

Anyways, with knowledge of their global tactics and Line 1, you can set, say, your line 3 tactics to match up with their line 1.

But like you say, the information given could be much better.

I would definitely like to see improvement in this area of the game even if you have to assign a scout to specifically scout your next opponent.

I think it would add even more challenge to the game if you had to decide whether to use an ideal tactic suited for your team or a more countering tactic based on your opponent’s own style of play.

For example, in Football Manager I like to save about 4 or 5 tactics and load the one that I would think work best in a given match. This is based primarily on my scout’s pre-match report. Then I will fine tune during the match based on assistant manager’s feedback and my own observations. I will typically play my “ideal” tactic against weaker or evenly matched opponents and a more countering tactic against stronger competition especially if it’s an away fixture. Just my personal preference.

Don’t get me wrong-FHM is a solid product. I just think an improvement in this area would create a better in-game experience for myself (and maybe others too!)

Because we don't have 2d gameplay yet, it is probably more important than in Football Manager to get feedback on what is going on. For now, I would he happy with something on the pre-game screen and/or in assistant feedback area.

i was wondering about this as well...football manager has been mentioned in here and i thing it wouldnt be a bad idea take a page from their book....i think fhm needs to have tactical familiarity screen/feature(dont know how to call it). That way you would have to try and get the team/each line familiar with, in your opinion, best tactic available. This would mean that even if you knew what tactic your oponent is using it wouldnt help you to simply change your style to best counter theirs since you would loose familiarity and that would negate the advatage you would get from changing your tactic.I´d like to know what developers think of this idea
