I've enjoyed this from the outset, but it's taken me a while to settle on a team to root for. I was leaning towards Park City, but your last post swung it for the Liberty Giants and their pinch-hitter Dillon "No Comment" Reynalds. I appreciate a tight-lipped ballplayer! Any more details on Mr R will be greatly appreciated.

Here's a link to his almanac page from 1981. He's not a very good player, but he certainly rose to the occasion in that game. At 32, he's probably never going to be more than a backup catcher at best. However, if you're going to be a Liberty fan, you've got several good options as a favorite player. Not to mention a big acquisition after this year that should get you excited (remember that I'm playing ahead at least a year). |

I'm liking the look of C Roland Harris, and I also think the rotation is holding up a bit better than expected - but you've really got me interested now with the news of a big acquisition to come. KUTGW!

Monthly Wrap-Up Newport continued its tear through the league, and now sits at 41-16 with a comfortable 9 game lead over Park City. The Navigators are leading the league in almost every category, and the top 3 pitchers in the rotation are putting up amazing numbers, with a combined 21-4 record. Youngster Will McBride continues to shine with 18 Saves and a 1.95 ERA. The biggest story, however, is Dave Bartlett, who is putting together a season for the ages. He has 28 homers and 60 RBI in 57 games, and he is leading the league in every Triple Crown category. He has also won both Batter of the Month awards this season. Portsmouth has also been in the news this month, but for different reasons. At 14-43, they are 27 games back, and they are now in full rebuilding mode, making 5 different trades this month. After the high-profile signings of Steven Carney and Larry Holmes, it is a disappointing situation. Holmes is gone, along with last year’s batting champion Al Jackson. The Clippers have also shipped out last year’s #4 draft pick, Norm Watkins. Portsmouth has also brought back Marlon Given on a one-year contract, as he is expected to return from his year-long injury in the next few weeks. Larry, 37, and Lowell, 33, have been wildly successful pitchers in Newland for a long time, and both have been in the news this month. Larry Holmes was born in Park City. Following a career at the University of Adams in Oxford, Larry was honored as Newland’s best rookie in 1967. He held a lifetime 124-113 record with a 3.24 ERA in the old amateur leagues, and he had the record for season winning percentage, going 12-1 in 1974. Larry is somewhat intelligent and a hard worker, but he doesn’t have much leadership ability. His success was mostly based on being above average in all facets of the game, with no major weaknesses. His changeup was always his best pitch, and he has a decent fastball and below average curveball. He is not very good defensively. Lowell Holmes was born in Salem Beach. After another of many family moves, Lowell played high school ball in Lloydton, Hamilton, a small town northwest of Canton. Lowell started playing in the amateur leagues directly out of high school in 1967, the same year as his brother, but it took him a little longer to make an impact. His breakout year was 1971, with a 7-1 record. His record in the amateur leagues was 87-75 with a 3.67 ERA. Lowell is much more outgoing than his brother, and he has great leadership ability. His work ethic is below average and his intelligence is about average. Lowell is mostly a control pitcher, but he has good stuff and movement as well. He has an elite curveball, a good fastball, and a below average changeup. He is also much better defensively than Larry. The Holmes brothers both signed with Irondale at the formation of the CBL, but their plans to play together didn’t last long. Larry suffered a season-ending injury on May 18, 1981, and he chose to leave the Steelers after the season. He signed a 1-year contract with Portsmouth this year, but was traded on May 29 to Park City, the city where he was born. Last year with Irondale, he finished up with a 2-3 record and a 3.08 ERA in 10 starts, but his age is starting to take its toll. This year, he has been primarily a relief pitcher, with only 1 start all season, and he has struggled, posting a 5.97 ERA. Lowell, on the other hand, seems to just be hitting his prime. After a 10-12 record and 3.12 ERA last year, he has started 1982 with an 8-2 record and 3.07 ERA in 12 starts. He just won his first Pitcher of the Month award, and he is currently leading the league in IP, WHIP, BB/9, and K/BB. Games of the Month May 3 – Portsmouth @ Liberty Liberty scored 6 runs in the 8th, capped by a 3-run homer by Carl Schultz to win 7-5. May 7 – Irondale @ Portsmouth Lowell Holmes pitched well, but Irondale’s offense was the star of the show, as the Steelers scored in each of the first 8 innings to win 16-4. May 10 – Liberty @ Newport After falling in a 5-0 hole, Newport tied the game with 5 runs in the 6th. Dave Bartlett hit his 2nd homer of the day in the bottom of the 9th to give the Navigators a 6-5 win. May 17 – Newport @ Capital City William McKinney pitched 8 scoreless innings and Dave Bartlett hit 2 home runs as Newport downed the Senators 8-0. May 27 – Portsmouth @ Capital City Capital City came back from a 5-1 hole, scoring 2 in the 6th and 5 in the 8th for an 8-5 win. Guillermo Reyes and Kenny Collins each hit homers in the deciding 8th inning. May 31 – Newport @ Portsmouth Portsmouth showed some of its offensive potential, scoring 4 runs in the 8th inning to defeat the 1st-place Navigators 6-4. May 31 – Liberty @ Park City Park City scored 3 in the bottom of the 9th to beat their rivals 6-5. Gregory Metoyer doubled and scored against his former team in the game-deciding rally.

Monthly Wrap-Up The Newport Navigators have continued their amazing run, and with only 36 games to play, they have a 14 game lead. Dave Bartlett cooled off considerably in June, but he still leads the league in all 3 Triple Crown categories. The biggest news for Newport, though, is Bo Pratt’s move to the bullpen. Pratt was making a strong case for the Outstanding Pitcher Award, but manager Troy Ford decided to experiment by making him the closer for the rest of the year. Pratt’s weakness has always been stamina, but his ability has allowed him to be a successful starter. The change displaces Will McBride to the setup role, but he has the stamina to be a starter, and Newport’s fans are calling for the youngster to get a chance in the rotation. Ford’s bold move is being questioned by many throughout the league, but only time will tell if it will work out for the Navigators. Players of the Week June 7 – RF Ken Bradley, PC, 12-26, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 6 R June 14 – 3B Steven Carney, POR, 10-30, 5 HR, 11 RBI June 21 – LF Gregory Metoyer, PC, 11-22, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 6 R June 28 – 2B Will Johnson, LIB, 14-31, 1 HR, 7 RBI, 7 R Players of the Month Batter – 3B Mike Wiedle, LIB, .381, 6 HR, 25 RBI, 17 R Pitcher – SP Edward Davis, NEW, 4-1, 3.12 ERA, 34.2 IP, 43 K Rookie – SP Roosevelt Jones, POR, 3-1, 1.80 ERA, 30 IP, 13 K Top Performances Batting – June 7 – 3B Mike Wiedle, LIB vs. POR, 4-5, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 3 R, 1 BB Pitching – June 23 – SP Matt Haley, CC vs. PC, 9.0 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 5 K Major Transactions June 12 – 3B Shawn Bernard, IRO, signed a 1-year, $7 million extension June 15 – MR Ben Walden, IRO, signed a 1-year, $1 million extension June 16 – RF Joe Craig, NEW, signed a 1-year, $3.36 million extension Draft Highlights #1 – Portsmouth – C Ron Wilson, 21, University of Hamilton Wilson was the #3 draft pick last year, but failed to sign with Irondale. He has improved his defense, and he has the potential to be a solid starting Catcher. #2 – Capital City – SP Walt McGhee, 20, Washington Tech McGhee has a lot of talent, but with only 2 plus pitches, he’s going to have a hard time making it as a starter in the CBL. #3 – Irondale – CF Luke Fields, 21, Burlington College Fields is a tremendous athlete with outstanding speed and stealing ability. He is able to play any outfield position at an elite level. His offense projects as above average #4 –Irondale – SP Dave Gordon, 18, Tipham West HS (Tipham, WA) Gordon has good talent, but only 2 plus pitches. #5 – Liberty – SS Vicente Flores, 18, Sofiaburg HS (Sofiaburg, WA) Flores should be a decent middle infielder, with a good amount of power. #6 – Park City – SP Ray Reese, 19, Washington State Reese was a 4th round pick last year out of high school, but failed to sign with Irondale. He is an average prospect. #7 – Newport – CF Jose Espinoza, 18, Mineralville HS, (Mineralville, WA) Espinoza is an average prospect. Major Injuries June 1 – MR Dennis Lawrence, PC, out for 3-4 months due to torn triceps June 5 – SP Emery Murdock, PC, out for 5 months due to radial nerve compression June 11 – SS Kenny Collins, CC, out for 5 weeks due to strained hamstring June 24 – RF Errol Webb, CC, out for 4-5 months due to torn back muscle June 25 – SP Lonnie Stewart, IRO, out for 6 months due to torn flexor tendon in elbow Get to know…Sherman Deal 1981 Baseball Card Sherman ‘Sheep’ Deal was one of the top players in the amateur leagues, and it was unfortunate for him that the CBL was formed so late in his career. Deal, now 43, was born in Toddham, Jefferson, a town of about 64,000 people on the southeast coast of Indian Lake. Like Marlon Given, Deal spent some time in the Navy, and he started his career at the age of 26. During his amateur league career, he won 2 Hitter of the Year awards, in 1969 and 1974. He was also the all-time leader in hits, runs, singles, stolen bases, VORP, and WAR. In his prime, Deal was an excellent contact hitter with a great eye and average power. As he’s gotten older, his contact and power have declined, but his eye has improved to an elite level, which has allowed him to keep his career going. He used to be a solid fielder at both 3B and RF, but now he is well below average. He has also lost most of his speed from his younger days, but his baserunning ability and stealing ability have remained elite. Sherman Deal’s intangibles are really what set him apart. He is extremely smart, a good clubhouse leader, and one of the hardest workers you’ll ever see. Sherman Deal has been an average player in the CBL, but at his age, that’s still pretty impressive. He played for Portsmouth last year, and now he is with Park City. He has a CBL career line of .251/.418/.303. Games of the Month June 2 – Irondale @ Liberty Liberty erased a 7-3 deficit, scoring 3 in the 8th and 2 in the 9th to win 8-7. June 5 – Newport @ Irondale Edward Davis pitched 8 scoreless innings and Dave Bartlett hit a 2-run homer to give the Navigators a 2-0 win. June 6 – Park City @ Capital City Capital City scored 6 runs in the 8th, capped by a Guillermo Reyes grand slam, to win 7-2. June 7 – Newport @ Irondale In a matchup of 2 of the CBL’s best pitchers, Lowell Holmes got the better of Bo Pratt, as the Steelers took the win 2-0. June 9 – Newport @ Park City Newport broke open a 4-4 tie with a 9-run 8th inning, and the Navigators went on to win 13-8. Newport hit 5 home runs on the day. June 11 – Liberty @ Newport Sixto Benvijes hit a walk-off 2-run homer in the 12th to give Newport a 5-3 win. June 11 – Capital City @ Portsmouth Portsmouth ended a marathon 16-inning game by scratching across a run in the 16th to win 3-2. The winning run was scored on a botched pickoff attempt to first base. June 12 – Capital City @ Portsmouth For the second straight day, the Senators and Clippers went to extra innings. Capital City scored 1 in the 11th on a Harry Cooper triple, but Steven Carney answered with a walk-off grand slam to give Portsmouth a 9-6 win. June 16 – Portsmouth @ Newport Last-place Portsmouth topped first-place Newport in 14 innings. The Clippers scored 3 in the top of the 14th, and the Navigators answered with 1 of their own in the bottom of the inning, but the rally fell short, and Portsmouth won 5-3. June 23 – Capital City @ Park City The Senators played an all-around great game, winning 13-0 behind Matt Haley’s complete game shutout. |

Monthly Wrap-Up The Newport Navigators pulled away from the field, locking up their 2nd straight CBL title. With 7 games to play, the Navigators have an impressive 17 game lead on Capital City. Bo Pratt’s move to the closer role has been mostly successful, as he has a record of 2-2 and is 8-for-8 in save opportunities. William McKinney and Edward Davis have been a dominant 1-2 punch at the top of the rotation, and it is likely that one of them will take home the Outstanding Pitcher Award. Lastly, Dave Bartlett has had an unbelievable season, and he is just a few games away from possibly winning the CBL’s first Triple Crown. He is only 1 point up on Capital City’s Harry Cooper in batting average, and he is 11 HR and 2 RBI up on Guillermo Reyes. Bartlett’s race for the Triple Crown will be the most exciting thing about the last 7 games. An interesting side-note to the last half of the season was the return of Marlon Given to the Clippers after last year’s nasty injury. At 44 years old, he proved he was still a formidable closer, going 4-for-5 in save opportunities and collecting a 1.50 ERA and 18 IP in 17 appearances. If this is the end of the road for Given, it’s a good way to go out, although Portsmouth’s record surely is disappointing for him. Players of the Week July 5 – 3B Guillermo Reyes, CC, 9-24, 3 HR, 8 RBI July 12 – 1B Kyle Bailey, NEW, 11-26, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 4 R July 19 – 3B Guillermo Reyes, CC, 14-27, 6 HR, 14 RBI, 12 R July 26 – C Roland Harris, LIB, 12-23, 2 HR, 8 RBI Players of the Month Batter – 3B Guillermo Reyes, CC, .342, 13 HR, 37 RBI, 27 R, 13 BB Pitcher – SP William McKinney, NEW, 5-0, 1.05 ERA, 42.2 IP, 47 K Rookie – C Mike Lyons, CC, .293, 2 HR, 12 RBI Top Performances Batting – July 11 – 3B Guillermo Reyes, CC vs. LIB, 4-5, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 4 R Pitching – July 5 – SP Millard Beck, LIB vs. IRO, 9.0 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 3 BB, 5 K Major Transactions None Major Injuries July 10 – 3B Keith Graham, PC, out for 9 months due to torn ACL July 12 – 2B Ramiro Amaya, CC, out for 8 months due to broken bone in elbow July 26 – 2B Mark Jones, NEW, out for 4-5 months due to broken bone in elbow July 27 – MR Vincent Mathis, CC, out for 12 months due to torn UCL August 1 – 3B Sergio Gutierrez, CC, out for 6 weeks due to torn abdominal muscle Get to know…Mike Wiedle 1981 Baseball Card This month, we’re looking at the long career of Mike Wiedle, who will go down in history as one of the best players of his generation. Wiedle, 36, was born in Park City and went to college at Portsmouth Maritime. He started his amateur career in 1968. In the amateur leagues, Wiedle’s career ranks were 7th in batting average, 4th in HR, 5th in RBI, and 6th in both VORP and WAR. He was also named the BNN Hitter of the Year in 1976. Mike Wiedle has always been a good all-around hitter, and his best attribute is his power. He is an average defender with a plus arm, and he is not a threat on the base paths. Wiedle is very intelligent, but his very low work ethic has probably held him back in his career from being a superstar. In the CBL, Wiedle has continued his success, winning 2 Player of the Week awards and 1 Batter of the Month award. He was a key player on last year’s Newport team that won the inaugural championship. In the offseason, he became a free agent and signed with Liberty. This year, he is currently tied for 4th in hits, 5th in total bases, and 7th in OPS. At 36, he probably won’t return to his Hitter of the Year level of production, but he can still be a valuable contributor for a few more years. Games of the Month July 5 – Capital City @ Newport Newport scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 9th to tie the game 2-2, and then Kyle Bailey hit a walk-off homer in the 10th to give the Navigators a 3-2 win. July 10 – Liberty @ Capital City In the top of the 10th, Liberty’s Mike Wiedle hit a 2-run homer to give the Giants a 4-2 lead. The Senators answered with a run of their own, but stranded 2 runners, ending the game in a 4-3 Liberty win. July 11 – Newport @ Park City Newport erupted for 7 runs in the 9th, including a Sammy Crawford grand slam and a Kyle Bailey 2-run homer. The Navigators went on to win 8-3. July 12 – Newport @ Park City In what might be the game of the year, several big names had an impact. It was a 1-1 tie after 9 innings, behind strong outings by Bob Cole and Kevin Miller. In the top of the 12th, Newport scored on a Dave Bartlett bases loaded walk issued by Larry Holmes. Holmes was replaced by former Navigator (and last year’s OPA winner) Martin Vazquez, who got Tad Gill to ground into a double play to end the rally. In the bottom of the inning, with Will McBride pitching, Vazquez was left in to bat and hit a 2-out double. He was singled home by last year’s batting champion Al Jackson to tie the game. The bottom of the 14th started with a Sherman Deal single, included an intentional walk to pitcher Martin Vazquez (!), and ended with a Jim Lake single to score Deal, giving Park City a 3-2 win. July 18 – Portsmouth @ Newport Newport scored 2 in the bottom of the 9th to edge the Clippers 7-6. July 19 – Portsmouth @ Newport Portsmouth got some revenge from the previous day’s game, coming back from a 5-0 hole with Steven Carney hitting a solo home run in the top of the 9th to give the Clippers a 7-6 win. July 22 – Portsmouth @ Park City Park City’s Ken Bradley hit a 2-run homer in the bottom of the 8th to give the Patriots a 6-5 lead, and they held on for the win. July 24 – Irondale @ Newport Top pitchers Lowell Holmes and William McKinney went at it, with McKinney getting the best of Holmes. McKinney gave up 1 run in 8 innings, while Holmes gave up 2 runs in 7 innings. Irondale’s bullpen couldn’t keep it close, as Newport pulled away for a 5-1 win. July 25 – Irondale @ Newport Newport’s offense was impressive, as they scored in all but 1 inning. 9 Navigators hit safely and 5 of those hit home runs in the 15-3 win. |

Nice to see the pen-picture of Mike Wiedle. I like the way you are recording this, a good balance between stats and stories.

Season Wrap-Up Newport celebrated their 2nd straight CBL championship, but the season ended on a sour 4-game losing streak, and Dave Bartlett was caught from behind in the RBI race by Guillermo Reyes, who had 5 in 6 games to Bartlett’s 2. The CBL’s first Triple Crown will have to wait for another year, but Bartlett will surely be the unanimous Outstanding Hitter Award winner anyway. The questions for next year all surround Bartlett. Newport’s GM has been trying to sign him to an extension, but nothing has happened yet, and time is running out fast. If he hits free agency, the competitive landscape could change in a hurry. Players of the Week August 2 – C Dave Bartlett, NEW, 8-19, 3 HR, 7 RBI, 8 R Top Performances Batting – August 6 – C Roland Harris, LIB vs. IRO, 3-4, 1 HR, 6 RBI, 2 R Pitching – August 1 – SP Edward Davis, NEW vs. LIB, 8.0 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 8 K, 3 BB Major Transactions None Major Injuries None Games of the Month August 3 – Newport @ Portsmouth In a game of ‘haves’ versus ‘have-nots’, Newport flexed its muscles and notched an impressive 21-0 victory behind a wonderful outing by William McKinney. 12 different players hit safely for the Navigators, who once again showed why they’re the best team in the league. August 4 – Newport @ Portsmouth Portsmouth got a small amount of revenge on Newport, scoring 10 runs in the 7th inning en route to a 15-4 win. August 6 – Capital City @ Newport Capital City played an impressive game against the champions, winning 1-0 and giving Edward Davis only his 3rd loss of the season. Scott Allen pitched 7 stellar innings, and Myles Brooks got the save. Davis gave up 3 hits and 2 walks in 7.1 innings, striking out 12 in the loss. 1982 ALMANAC

The free agency period started off with a bang, as reigning 2-time Outstanding Hitter Award winner Dave Bartlett was unable to come to an agreement with Newport, and he will be testing the waters. 2 of the other top catchers in the league have also filed for free agency, so it will be interesting to see how things shake out. 4 legendary players from the amateur leagues are also free agents. BNN has profiled each of them in our “Get to know” feature, and we are interested in seeing if these players will extend their careers or hang up the cleats. I'm hoping the Giants make a run at Bartlett. With this year's Rookie of the Year and the talent already there, Bartlett could provide the extra push needed. Plus, as we say over here, he'll put "bums on seats" in the ballpark!

2-time defending champion Newport was dealt a huge blow, as superstar catcher Dave Bartlett signed with Liberty. 25-year-old Terry Williams will have some huge shoes to fill in Newport, but he filled in ably as a backup last year, hitting .341 with 9 HR. Liberty’s former catcher Roland Harris signed with Capital City, while Al Jackson remains unsigned. This marks the second year in a row that Liberty has signed a Newport star, following Mike Wiedle last year. Sherman Deal is extending his career at least one more season, signing a 1-year contract with the Patriots. He will turn 45 in July. The beginning of Spring Training is upon us, and Liberty is again in the news. After the Giants’ blockbuster signing of Dave Bartlett, they’ve added catcher Al Jackson to the roster as well. Manager Miguel Mendez said that Jackson will be the starting first basemen, displacing 1981’s Rookie of the Year Antonio Marte, who had a disappointing sophomore campaign. With Liberty’s additions, people around the league are speculating if they can dethrone the Navigators, but lack of pitching depth still seems to be an issue for the Giants. Newport’s pitching staff is as good as ever, and they certainly have the potential to overcome the loss of Bartlett. Spring Training came to a close on March 26th, and for the second straight year, the Liberty Giants finished with the best record at 16-8, 2 games ahead of Portsmouth. Tomorrow is opening day, and BNN has released its predictions for the upcoming season. We are picking Capital City to win this year’s CBL championship. The Senators have a formidable 1-2 punch on offense with Harry Cooper and Guillermo Reyes, who are just coming into their primes at 26 and 24. They also have a solid young rotation that should improve from last year, along with one of the top closers in the league in Myles Brooks. This could be the year that they pull it all together. Irondale should be a good all-around team, led by pitchers Lowell Holmes and Chad Hansford. The Steelers have a lot of speed and little power. Liberty is projected to have the top offense in the league, with the additions of Dave Bartlett and Al Jackson, but their pitching will struggle to keep up. In a controversial move, we are picking 2-time defending champion Newport to finish 4th. While their pitching should be near the top of the league, the loss of Dave Bartlett will certainly hurt the offense. Park City has the best overall pitching staff, but their offense will likely rank near the bottom, and we are picking them to finish 5th. We are picking Portsmouth to finish last for the 3rd straight year, but we think they’ll be much better than last year’s 38-82. The Clippers still need to add some pitching to be more competitive. Monthly Wrap-Up Newport is once again at the top of the standings, and they’re doing it without 1B Kyle Bailey, who was injured in spring training and will return tomorrow. Bo Pratt is back in the rotation after the experiment at closer last year, but both he and William McKinney have struggled. Edward Davis, who was the Pitcher of the Month, and an outstanding bullpen have carried the team through April. It is a very close race, with Liberty and Capital City only a game back, and Park City and Irondale 2 games back. Portsmouth continues to struggle at 6 games back. Dave Bartlett, now with Liberty, continues to be the league’s best hitter, and the Giants have scored the most runs in the CBL, but they also have the worst ERA. Park City’s Earl Gordon pitched the CBL’s first no-hitter on April 2nd. Pre-season favorite Capital City has been bitten badly by the injury bug, but they are playing well overall and are still in the hunt. Players of the Week April 11 – 3B Sergio Gutierrez, CC, 16-32, 1 HR, 6 RBI April 18 – 3B Steven Carney, POR, 8-24, 4 HR, 6 RBI, 8 R April 25 – 3B Steven Carney, POR, 11-21, 1 HR, 7 RBI, 7 R Players of the Month Batter – C Dave Bartlett, LIB, .337, 9 HR, 25 RBI, 18 R Pitcher – SP Edward Davis, NEW, 4-1, 1.80 ERA, 45 IP, 61 K Rookie – CF Bill Fletcher, LIB, .382, 0 HR, 6 RBI, 12 R Top Performances Batting – April 23 – RF Jose Guzman, CC vs. POR, 4-5, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 2 R Pitching – April 2 – SP Earl Gordon, PC vs. CC, 9.0 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 11 K Major Transactions April 12 – SS Walt Jones, IRO, signed a 1-year, $4.4 million extension April 28 – C Spencer Warren, IRO, signed a 1-year, $9 million extension Major Injuries April 9 – MR Chris McIntosh, CC, out for 4-5 months due to sore shoulder April 10 – SP Matt Haley, CC, out for 2 months due to strained hamstring April 10 – MR Bennett Koch, POR, out for 3-4 months due to ulnar nerve irritation April 12 – CF Eddie Terry, CC, out for 3-4 months due to fractured ankle April 12 – 1B Al Jackson, LIB, out for 6 weeks due to sprained ankle April 13 – MR Jason Knapp, PC, out for 7 months due to shoulder inflammation April 30 – LF Ken Miller, CC, career-ending injury due to concussion Get to know…Earl Gordon Baseball Cards: 1981, 1982 This month, we’re profiling starting pitcher Earl Gordon of the Park City Patriots. Gordon, 28, was born in Milton, Washington and attended Washington State in nearby Monmouth. At WSU, he was a freshman when Edward Davis was a senior. Gordon started his career as a relief pitcher in 1976 and became a starter in 1979. In the amateur leagues, he had a record of 23-17 with 6 saves and an ERA of 3.60. Earl Gordon has below average stamina for a starter, but he makes up for it by being above average at nearly everything else. He has a decent fastball, changeup, and curveball. Gordon is an extremely hard worker and a good leader. He is well-liked in the clubhouse. Gordon has been one of the Patriots’ top pitchers each of the last 2 years, compiling a record of 21-14, but he etched his name in the history books this month by throwing the first no-hitter in CBL history in the 2nd game of the season. In the game against pre-season favorite Capital City, he struck out 11 batters and gave up no walks. The only miscue that prevented a perfect game was an error by Gordon himself in the 6th inning. He finished the month of April with a 3-1 record, and he is leading the league with a 1.42 ERA. Gordon is currently 8th in career ERA and 3rd in Wins, behind only Edward Davis and Lowell Holmes. Games of the Month April 2 – Capital City @ Park City Earl Gordon of Park City pitched the CBL’s first no-hitter in a 2-0 win. The Senators’ only baserunner came on a Gordon error in the 6th, preventing a perfect game. Matt Haley pitched well, only giving up 2 runs on 7 hits in 7 innings. April 6 – Portsmouth @ Irondale Portsmouth’s ace Kelvin Taylor earned his 2nd win in as many starts, outdueling Lowell Holmes in a 1-0 win. Taylor gave up 4 hits and struck out 8 in 7 innings, while Holmes gave up 1 run on 5 hits with 7 strikeouts in 8 innings. April 10 – Park City @ Irondale Park City’s catcher Dave Hill hit a grand slam in the top of the 9th, and Marlon Given closed out the game in the bottom of the inning, giving the Patriots a 5-3 win. April 10 – Liberty @ Portsmouth Legendary sluggers Dave Bartlett and Steven Carney each hit 2 home runs as the Giants downed the Clippers 14-12. April 20 – Liberty @ Capital City Down 3-2 going in to the 9th, Liberty scored 5 runs in the top of the 9th. The Senators answered with 2 of their own, but it wasn’t enough as the Giants won 7-5. April 24 – Park City @ Liberty Liberty’s Eric Holmes hit a 3-run double in the bottom of the 8th to give the Giants a 3-2 win over their rival. April 28 – Capital City @ Newport Newport scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 9th to win 4-3. April 29 – Portsmouth @ Liberty Liberty’s Carl Schultz hit a walk-off 2-run homer to give the Giants a 9-8 win. |

Go, Irondale!
Kinda' surprised that this was the first no-hitter. What's this the second season? For some reason i thought this was the third... Nevermind, it is 1983. i thought Newport won two championships. Last edited by Dark Horse; 04-22-2015 at 12:50 AM. |

Monthly Wrap-Up Newport finds itself in a familiar spot at the top of the standings, 3 games ahead of Capital City, our preseason favorite. The Senators have underachieved so far, with Harry Cooper especially playing worse than last year, when he was the runner-up for the OHA. They’ve had to deal with several injuries, but the other teams have had their share this month too, so the Senators are in a good position to chase Newport. Liberty still has the best offense in the league, but the loss of ace Ben Dixon will likely eliminate them from the race, unless the other pitchers can really step it up over the next 2 months. Dave Bartlett no longer has a monopoly on the Triple Crown categories, but Edward Davis continues to shine for Newport, and he is currently leading the CBL in each of the pitching Triple Crown categories. He’s making a strong case to be the first back-to-back winner of the Outstanding Pitcher Award. Players of the Week May 2 – SS Bill Fletcher, LIB, 11-22, 0 HR, 1 RBI May 9 – LF Enrique Morales, POR, 9-18, 1 HR, 9 RBI May 16 – SS Tim MacIntosh, POR, 12-23, 0 HR, 2 RBI May 23 – C Mike Lyons, CC, 14-30, 0 HR, 6 RBI May 30 – 1B Mike Pryor, LIB, 10-24, 2 HR, 7 RBI Players of the Month Batter – 3B Mike Wiedle, LIB, .356, 7 HR, 21 RBI, 16 R Pitcher – SP Bo Pratt, NEW, 4-0, 1.45 ERA, 37.1 IP, 38 K Rookie – SS Bill Fletcher, LIB, .198, 0 HR, 6 RBI, 8 R Top Performances Batting – May 24 – 2B Rob Hickmott, LIB vs. CC, 3-4, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 4 R, 1 BB Pitching – May 7 – SP William McKinney, NEW vs. PC, 8.0 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 10 K Major Transactions May 15 – Trade: Newport gets 30-year-old LF Carl Schultz, Liberty gets 30-year-old 3B Jeff Bell, a low-ranked prospect, and a 4th round pick May 20 – SP Millard Beck, LIB, signed 1-year, $4.8 million extension May 24 – Trade: Liberty gets 33-year-old MR Bill Reese, Portsmouth gets 2 low-ranked prospects May 27 – Trade: Park City gets 29-year-old MR Ted Wolton, Portsmouth gets #25 prospect and a low-ranked prospect Major Injuries May 3 – 3B Sergio Gutierrez, CC, out for 5 weeks due to strained groin muscle May 3 – SP Lowell Holmes, IRO, out for 4-5 months due to broken bone in elbow May 5 – CF Sammy Campbell, NEW, out for 6 weeks due to sprained ankle May 12 – CL Marlon Given, PC, out for 2-3 months due to partially torn labrum May 21 – SP Kelvin Taylor, POR, out for 8 weeks due to forearm strain May 22 – CF Joe Henderson, POR, out for 7-8 months due to ruptured Achilles tendon May 25 – CF Reid Lee, POR, out for 4 months due to fractured ankle May 25 – SP Ben Dixon, LIB, out for 13 months due to torn rotator cuff Get to know…Jim Lake Baseball Cards: 1981, 1982 Park City’s Jim Lake is our featured player of the month. Lake, 31, was born in Liberty and attended Adams State in nearby Cambridge. In the amateur leagues, he won the 1976 Rookie of the Year, and then he won the 1980 Best Hitter Award, dethroning Dave Bartlett, who had won it 3 times in a row before that. Lake is a decent contact hitter with an above-average eye, but he has excellent power. He is a below-average fielder and baserunner. He is intelligent, a hard worker, and gets along with everyone. Lake has spent all 3 years in the CBL with Park City, and he has been a solid hitter each year. He has won 2 Player of the Week awards. He is currently the career leader in games played, and he is 5th in home runs and 7th in RBI. This year, he is tied for the league lead in HR with 15. Games of the Month May 7 – Park City @ Newport William McKinney pitched 8 scoreless innings, and Will McBride closed the door in the 9th as the Navigators beat the Patriots 1-0. May 12 – Irondale @ Newport Newport recovered from an early 5-0 deficit to send the game to extra innings. In the 13th, Irondale scored a run, but Newport answered in the bottom of the inning with a walk-off two-run double by Bob Townsley to win 7-6. May 13 – Park City @ Irondale Irondale’s Tim Higgins hit a walk-off two-run double in the 9th to give the Steelers an 8-7 win. May 14 – Park City @ Irondale Legendary pitcher Rich Cates, at 39, made just his 5th start in the CBL and dominated the Patriots, giving up 2 hits and 1 run in 8 innings. Irondale scored 4 runs off 1981 OPA winner Martin Vazquez and went on to win 6-1. May 19 – Irondale @ Liberty Newly acquired Jeff Bell doubled and scored in the 9th to tie the game, and hit a walk-off sacrifice fly in the 10th to win the game 4-3 for Liberty. May 24 – Liberty @ Capital City It was a dominating performance by Liberty, scoring 15 runs in the first 5 innings. Starter Tim Bowen pitched 8.2 scoreless innings, and the Giants won 15-0. May 30 – Irondale @ Park City Pinch-hitter Clayton Lilly broke a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the 9th with a walk-off grand slam to give Park City an 8-4 win. |

Looks like Irondale could use some bullpen help.
Did Cates take Holmes spot in the rotation? |
