George Lawler (11615)
Lawler fought five times against TB database men.
He was stopped by big Ed Dunkhorst before being knocked out by Gus Ruhlin and Middleweight superstar Tommy Ryan. He dropped a points verdict to Klondike Haines before gaining a disqualification win over the same man. There is an interesting article on Lawler on the Sweet Science web site. Tom Andrews: America’s Greatest Boxing Authority | TheSweetScience.com Boxing There is also some mention of a stoppage loss against Jack Johnson in 1900, though Boxrec has no record of it. This rating is speculative and not part of the database. |

Whitey Lester (10998)
Lester had eight contests against TB database fighters.
He was kayoed by Joe Gans, and stopped by Danny Duane, Patsy Sweeney and Elbows McFadden. He also dropped a points decision to Duane. He evened the score with Duane by winning two points verdicts. This rating is speculative and not part of the database. |

Jack Lewis (60594)
Lewis, not surprisingly, was knocked out both times he met the much heavier Philadelphia Jack O'Brien.
He won a newspaper decision over Otto Sielof and drew over six round with a fading Young Griffo. According to Boxrec Lewis failed to stop any of his opponents. This rating is speculative and not part of the database. |

Adam Ryan (45178)
Ryan had a patchy overall record winning only twelve of his forty two 'Boxrec' bouts.
He did however manage to force a twenty round draw with Battling Nelson which would appear to be the highpoint of his career. Only four of his career outings ended early, three of them in his favour. This rating is speculative and not part of the database. |

Tom Turner (140934)
According to boxrec, Turner fought on six occasions including stopping Harry Williams to win the English 8st 8lbs title.
Turner's career was ended tragically in the ring. He was knocked unconscious by Nat Smith in November of 1898 and never came round. 'Noble and Manly' by Guy Deghy (which covers the history of the National Sporting Club) described Turner as a 'stand by' fighter. This rating is speculative and not part of the database. |

Brum Watson (312097)
Watson's only Boxrec fight ended in a ninth round knockout loss to Barney Malone.
In Chris Greyvenstein's 'The Fighters', Watson gets the folowing write up concerning a tour of South Africa by Kid McCoy. 'It is on record that the only challenger who succeeded in avoiding Kid's deadly fists for 12 minutes was Brum Watson, a little booth fighter from Britain. Watson foiled McCoy by the simple expedient of running full pelt around the ring at a pace the heavier champion just could not match'. His reputation apparently grew from this and he made his home in Port Elizabeth. He managed to win the won the Lightweight title of Rhodesia before being dispatched by Malone. Watson apparently blamed the loss on the smallness of the ring! This rating is speculative and not part of the database. |

Willie Fitzgerald (11019)
Fitzgerald was a class fighter.
According to Boxrec he had 41 contests against official TB database men. He went 19(7) - 12(4) - 10, against them. Since I started looking at him he has been added to the official database. The main difference between the official version and mine is that I have lowered the rating of his 'chin' and recovery. I also upped his cut rating to 2. I ran the 41 fights against the db fighter's four times and came up with the following average. W22.6(7.9)/L16.9(3.5)/D1.5. If you split the remaining draw's between win and losses (arbitrary I know!) it comes out there or thereabouts. This rating is speculative and not part of the database. |

Kid Fredericks (17526)
According to Boxrec, Fredericks fought 52 bouts.
However only three of those contests were against database opponents. Fredericks lost all three, although two were fought in the twilight of his career. Two of his five knockout losses were against Aurelio Herrera and Stanley Ketchel, both murderous punchers. Fredericks appeared to be an all action type of fighter, though considering the number of bouts he fought, information on him is minimal. This rating is speculative and not part of the database. |

Gus Gardner (11015)
Boxrec records show that Gardner mixed it with 20 TB database fighters.
He crossed swords with an aging Joe Gans on three different ocassions, coming out second best on each visit to the ring. He managed to outpoint a faded Rube Ferns late on in the latter's career. His best victory was a huge upset win over Elbows McFadden. This rating is speculative and not part of the database. |

George Jansen (165397)
Other than Boxrec I can't find much else on Jansen.
Probably his most sucessful bout being a 20 round draw against Sam Bolen. He seemed to have trouble putting anyone away, scoring just one stoppage victory in 23 bouts. This rating is speculative and not part of the database. Last edited by Tosti; 01-03-2009 at 07:14 PM. |

Kid McFadden (46207)
McFadden appears to have been Mr Inconsistent.
Right from the word go he was unable to run up a sequence. He won an admirable points verdict over Casper Leon and a disqualification win against Solly Smith. He also found himself in London in 1902 where he stepped in the ring with Ben Jordan to fight for the 'British' version of the World Featherweight Title, he was knocked out in the fifteenth round. He dropped four consecutive stoppage defeats from 1903 to 1906 and fought sporadically thereafter. This rating is speculative and not part of the database. Hugh McPadden (165832)
McPadden was arguably unfortunate not to get a crack at a title.
He suffered an early stoppage loss at the hands of Johnny Reagan, but this proved to be unique. He lost a further 4 fights but they all went the duration. He fought Austin Rice three times, managing to draw a rubber. McPadden also got the better of Brooklyn Tommy Sullivan twice. This rating is speculative and not part of the database. |

Lew Ryall (12289)
Ryall's Boxrec record hides a durable light hitting fighter.
W11(KO 1)/L31(KO 4)/D23 He fought mainly in six round bouts, including taking Terrible Terry McGovern the distance, and was obviously very hard to 'put away'. Arguably his best performances came against Jimmy Simister, who he was able to better twice. He was also able to beat Billy Maharg once and draw three times in their five fight series. This rating is speculative and not part of the database. |

Mose LaFontise (63189)
Cyber Boxing Zone -- Mose LaFontise
According to Cyberboxing Mose and all his brothers were mute, four of them were boxers. Mose was a scrappy fighter who only met the 'cream' of the division in the latter stages of his career. He had been on the go for 9 years when he faced Joe Walcott for the World Welterweight title, he was knocked out in the third round. All three of his stoppage loses occured in his last five fights. This rating is speculative and not part of the database. |

Jerry McCarthy (11701)
Cyberboxingzone state that McCarthy was a 'talented battler who had a rather short career with not too many bouts'.
Although stopped in 6 of his 36 bouts, five of these defeats came at the end of his career. From a chequered career he appears to be the same level of performer as the above rated LaFontise, though besides meeting Stanley Ketchell twice later in his boxing lifetime he failed to get the big early fights. This rating is speculative and not part of the database. |

I was surprised not to find the top 1870s middleweight Mike Donovan in the database, although a vintage 1900 fighter with the same name was in there. At some point, I would love to see him rated for 2.5, or at least know that the older rating can still be used. The 1870s fighters have taken a drubbing in the database, and I don't want use a rating that would badly overrate him.

Thanks.
Edit: That's an import from version 1, and may actually be my own creation come full circle. Or it may be Dean's, I forget. Anyway, it looks like only the 1870s heavyweights had their ratings reduced for 2.5, so it's probably still valid.
