Series 5 Game 3

The final regular season game on the schedule in Cleveland between the two HOF teams takes place today.

Walter Johnson makes his first start against the Battle Cats. He is the first RH starter they have faced from Cleveland. The Battle Cats will give the Sergeants their first look at John McGraw and Charlie Keller, as starters. With Keller in LF, Mike Trout moves back to CF. Eric Davis gets the RF start. John Romano returns to backstop duties.

The teams are again in a percentage point differential for the league lead. A big game for both teams. Excitement!

Plenty of excitement early, in this one.

John McGraw, in his first start against Cleveland opened with a single off Walter Johnson. Miguel Cabrera followed with a single of his own. Mike Trout, who's performance this season is perhaps the biggest pleasant surprise, offensively, brought them home with a triple. Rico Petrocelli then brought home Trout with a ground out for his ML leading 67th RBI.

Neither team has surrendered a three run lead to the other, all season. Game over.

But Cleveland still wanted to play it out. OK.

Mickey Mantle hit a one out triple and Lou Gehrig brought him home with a grounder to short. 3-1 Charlotte.

Walter Johnson set down the Battle Cats in the second. With Barry Bonds at second base and two out in the bottom half, Gary Carter connected for his 5th HR on the season. 3-3. New game.

Kevin Mitchell opened the bottom of the 4th with a single off Unknown McDoolan. Stan Musial dropped a single to RF. When Eric Davis threw wild in an effort to cut down Mitchell, Catman scored and Musial was at second.

Larry Doyle brought home Mitchell and the Sergeants were now up two, 5-3.

After setting down the Battle Cats in the 5th, Walter Johnson aided his own cause by opening the Segeant 5th with a single. Lou Gehrig came up with Mickey Mantle now joined with Johnson on the basepaths and hit a 3 run shot to put the Sergeants ip 5.

With Walter Johnson in a totally dominant groove, the Sergeants cruised to a 9-3 win, taking the series and a one game lead in the pennant race.

Team snapshots

The final regular season series will be played in Charlotte. The Battle Cats will have 9 games remaining and the Sergeants 11, after that.

Don Sutton will be back for Charlotte, and that will be a big boost. Benny Kauff hasn't seen as much playing time vs Cleveland, due to all of their LHP, but will be a factor in a Walter Johnson start.

The Battle Cats are in Deep trouble as the series starts. They find themselves three games behind the Sergeants. Even if they sweep and pull even, they will need help from elsewhere because Cleveland has two games in hand. Anything short of a sweep is pretty much the end of their season.

The Battle Cats also have lost the services of Unknown Edwards, for the season. Edwards is a surprising presence on the league pitching leaderboards, but he is there, nonetheless. The problem for Charlotte is that he is also on the the DL.

Mike Trout's face is almost omnipresent on the batting leaderboards. This is certainly a surprise.

In game one, Lou Galvin carries the fate of Charlotte to the mound as he faces the 0.22 ERA toting Lefty Grove (npa ERA+ 1380!). We see how the extremely skewed talent distribution created by importing the HOFer's peak years is affecting the output in these teams' pitching numbers.

Nap Lajoie is now starting at SS for Cleveland. Shoeless Joe Jackson gets the RF start, today.

Benny Kauff returns to face the Sergeants, for Charlotte. Gil Hodges will be starting at first and Alex Rodriguez at 3B.

ADD: Oops. Posted wrong line-up card.

I didn't snip the line-up card for the game, but the info is in the box. I do like the overview the lineup screen gives, but I just don't have it.

The season, for all intents and purposes, came to a close when Shoeless Joe Jackson hit a 2 run single in the bottom of the 4th to give the Sergeants a 2-0 lead.

Lefty Grove pitched a CG 2 hitter and Cleveland won 8-0.

I will post the boxes from the remaining games, but will skip the write-ups. I have some observations I will post after the season, but I want to complete this and get to playing the game, again.

Should there be some sort of miraculous comeback by the Battle Cats, I will continue with expanded commentary, but I really don't see it happening.
