Game 1, @ Milburn (Jacoby Park)
Juan Leyva (17-7) vs. Steve Weston (11-6)

The Mallards jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the first inning, and never looked back in this one. Both the offense and Juan Leyva were operating on all cylinders to give Milburn the 1-0 lead in the Series.

After a 1-2-3 top of the first, Richie Swan led off the bottom of the first with a single. An error by Centennials' shortstop Alex Espinosa on Jody Carroll's grounder allowed Milburn to put runners at first and third for Ian Auld. Auld singled to left to score Swan and move Carroll to third. A wild pitch from Weston brought Carroll home and move Auld to second. Pete Grier was then hit by a pitch, putting runners at first and second for Ron Schwartz. Schwartz doubled, scoring Auld and moving Grier to third. Jim Rainey then grounded out to third, scoring Grier. Ken Baldridge's grounder to short was bobbled by Espinosa for another error, scoring Schwartz for the fifth run of the inning.

The Mallards scored another run in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Baldridge, scoring Schwartz. Milburn added four more in the fourth inning thanks to an RBI single by Auld and a 3-run home run by Pete Grier. They would add two more runs, one in the 6th and one in the 8th, before the game was over.

Juan Leyva was masterful, pitching a shutout and giving up five hits total. He struck out eight Centennials while walking none.

Steve Weston took the loss, pitching 3 1/3 innings, giving up 10 runs, 8 of them earned, on nine hits. He struck out two and walked none in his appearance.

FINAL: Milburn 12, Philadelphia 0
Player of the Game: Juan Leyva, Milburn
Milburn leads series 1-0

Game 2, @ Milburn (Jacoby Park)
Wally Christensen (5-3) vs. Mike Howard (17-7)

The Centennials relied on the hitting of MVP candidate Mike Seawright to get past the Mallards in Game 2, 9-5. Seawright slugged two home runs, adding 4 RBI and scoring twice. The Series is now tied 1-1.

The critical at-bat came in the top of the 9th. That's when Seawright stroked a 3-1 fastball from Harold Patterson over the fence in right field to give the Centennials an 8-5 lead.

"We came out aggressive," said Centennials manager Cal Dorsey. "We came out swinging the bats."

The next game is scheduled for Saturday night, September 27th at The Toney Bowl in Philadelphia. Slated to start are Bob Carithers for Milburn and John Barrett for Philadelphia.

FINAL: Philadelphia 9, Milburn 5
Player of the Game: Mike Seawright, Philadelphia
Series tied 1-1

The celebration at Jacoby Park was unrivaled as the Milburn Mallards beat the Cleveland Foresters 2-1 to win the 1980 Big League World Series!

Milburn won the series 4 games to 2 to capture its 9th title.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Coming off a 75-79 when I took this team over, I did not expect this quick of a turnaround. I hope this doesn’t impact the longevity of this dynasty. The Mallards are a young team, and we could be looking at a “dynasty” of a different kind with them. But I have some ideas on how to mix things up and create some more drama.

The morning of the Celebration Parade, I met the Breakfast Crew at the Mayflower Coffee Shop. I hadn’t met for breakfast with them at all during the playoffs, so it had been awhile.

After the celebration handshakes and hugs, and placing our orders, Bud Halvorsen jumped right in.

“So, the Commissioner says The Big Leagues is going to expand by two teams this offseason . . . . . how do you feel about that Stoney?”

You see, the day after our win, TBL Commissioner Fred Myrtle made the announcement that the league would expand by two teams this offseason. We knew expansion was coming in the next few years, but we did not expect it that quickly. But he said he wants to capitalize on the popularity of the league, and he has two willing and able owners ready to pony up right away, so the time is right in his mind.

That makes some sense, but how about the way this throws teams’ long-term plans in to chaos. Plans for approaching free agent extensions suddenly changes. Potential long-term commitments suddenly need to be re-evaluated.

Not to mention the reality that because of the Expansion Draft we would lose some members of our just-won World Series team who we weren’t expecting to lose.

“Ultimately it will be good for the league, Halvs. But I’m not thrilled about the timing of it. Usually we have a year at least to plan for these sort of things,” I responded to Bud’s question.

"So I'll give myself today, with the parade, to celebrate, and then tomorrow it is on to thinking about 1981. Which now includes an expansion draft we were not planning on."

Big Leagues to Add Two More Teams

NEW YORK, NY (10-11-1980) - At a press conference this morning at Big Leagues Headquarters in New York, Commissioner Fred Myrtle announced that TBL would be adding two teams for the 1981 season.

Talks had been ongoing for a couple years about expanding the league, but never before in the history of the League has it moved this quickly to grow. The last teams to join The Big Leagues were the Los Angeles Bluebirds and the Montreal Royales for the 1977 season. But talks for that expansion began shortly after the previous expansion, which took place for the 1974 season.

Myrtle explained the quick action. “We have had conversations about expanding the league further. So this is not a move completely last second or without planning. We have been discussing potential locations for the last year, year and a half.”

He continued, “But this year, with the amazing turnaround of the Milburn Mallards, and the excitement that stirred throughout the US, those talks picked up with greater vigor and purposefulness. And when potential team owners in two of the cities we have been looking at said that they would be ready to go as quickly as 1981, we felt like the iron was hot and the time was right.”

“With that being said, the two newest members of The Big Leagues will be . . . . the Denver Bears and the Phoenix Scorpions. Both teams will join the Hickory League. Given that the Hickory League will now have 16 teams and the Ash League will have 14, we will keep the two division format in both leagues. Both teams will be in the West Division, and the Milburn Mallards will move to the East Division.”

“We will announce more specifics, such as the date of the Expansion Draft, in the next week or so.”

With this change, we are moving the East Division. This may make the road a bit harder. The East has been overall the more competitive division the last few years. The Philadelphia Centennials and the Baltimore Baybirds battled it out until the very end of the season last year.

This will, unfortunately, break up our rivalries a bit with Milwaukee and Chicago. We'll have to form some new divisional rivalries.
