Met with Mr. Jacoby for our All-Star Break review. Overall, as expected, he is extremely pleased with how the season has gone thus far. Here are some of his comments related to the goals he had set for me/the team at the beginning of the season. I didn't say this to him, but you do have to wonder if extending Lewis was the right move after all now that he is out for the season and with his age. According to our medical staff though, everything is progressing as hoped, so here's to hoping he is able to come back. Both for his sake and our sake.

A couple free agents I am interested in are Canadian SS Bill Lazenby, SS Guibert Duccio out of Venezuela, and RHP Al Westcott out of Canada. But Mr. Jacoby has limited our spending right now, so I don’t think I will be pursuing anyone at this time. |

Houston Buffaloes GM Jack Yates reached out to me to let me know their closer, Harold Patterson, was available in the right deal. Patterson has pitched well, with 17 saves and a 2.15 ERA this season. He is currently making $78,000 this season, and is arbitration-eligible after that. I was very intrigued by Patterson, thinking he might be a good fit, at a nowhere near as expensive price tag as Jim Howard had. But when I talked to Mr. Jacoby about making a move, he informed me that we cannot really add salary this year. That adds a bit of hard wrinkle. Houston is also under a budget constraint, which meant that Bob Hancock would not work for them in return. So I may be stuck, at least right now. Maybe Mr. Jacoby will loosen some of those purse strings as we get closer to the trade deadline. |

Seattle Rainiers GM Jerry Miles reached out to me today (7/4) with a trade proposal. He offered me reliever Mike Lloyd for 2B Dan Musgrave. While Lloyd has had a really nice season, I let him know that I’m not interested in moving Musgrave right now. At the very least it would take more than Lloyd to get Musgrave. But I told him no thanks at this time. The clubs contacting me letting me know their closers are available is starting to pick up now that we have hit July. Among the clubs/closers on the market besides Houston’s Harold Patterson are: Seattle Rainiers - Terry Simmons (16 saves, 4.13 ERA, $274,000 salary) San Francisco Seals - Jim Toland (12 saves, 2.75 ERA, $368,000 salary) Brooklyn Atlantics - Macon Humphrey (19 saves, 5.56 ERA, $75,000 salary) Both of these guys are too expensive. Patterson still remains the most interesting name available, so will have to keep monitoring things.

Patterson fit a lot of, if not all, of the criteria, including financial, we needed in order to make a deal. Mr. Jacoby was limiting us from adding payroll, but we had some cash available, which we needed to add to this deal in order for Houston to accept it. None of the guys we gave up had any real future with us. Fuqua had been a key component of our bench, but had been struggling this year, and with Ken Baldridge coming on, we could afford to move him. Patterson immediately becomes our closer this season. If Lewis comes back from his injury next year, we will cross that bridge when we come to it. But for this year, Patterson gives us that closer we should be able to count on.

Well, I knew we had some good young talent, but I didn't expect this so quickly. When I think about all the injuries we have had to our pitching staff, I definitely count my blessings. But of course, the race does not end with the clinching of the division. Next up will be to get everyone healthy, and then we have the Hickory League Pennant Series. Not quite sure who we will face yet. With 7 games left to play, Philadelphia has a 2 game lead over Baltimore. The Magic # is 6 right now. So far this season we are 7-5 against Philadelphia, and 5-7 against Baltimore, so based on records we would rather face Philly. But of course, we will take on anyone and everyone in the playoffs.
